I had kids with me. We were far away from home. They were hungry for Mexican food. We searched yelp. Why are there so many Mexican restaurants in Bellingham and why do they all say they are the best? Hard to choose. The first place we went had good reviews but they were so trashy and rude and wasn't worth the trouble. The next place we tried was 21 and up but he was so nice to recommend this place. I was worried because it was so close to closing time and we walked from the previous place to avoid parking again. I have some medical issues that made the short walk take me out. We get there with 20 mins left until close. I see a seemingly swamped waitress and look at her apologetically but she welcomed us to sit and put menus in front of us. She hustled around to other tables and took our order quickly. The ambiance is nice. There's a small bar by the register. The food shows up after a brief wait and it looks super appetizing to the eyes. My burrito takes up the entirety of the large oval plate. My kid exclaimed, "that who thing is a burrito?!" He loves enchiladas and it's plated neatly with rice and beans. My daughter ordered carne asada only ever getting it from our favorite hometown restaurant nearly every other Sunday, so they got some high expectations to meet. Her carne asada comes with an enchilada which for us is a fail safe in case the carne asada turns out to be too different from our norm. To her delight, it was incredibly similar to what we would normally get in taste and presentation. There was so much food. Feeling bad for coming late, I tried to eat quickly and asked for boxes. There were two other tables that arrived before us just hanging out talking. I was acutely aware of the time having worked as a waitress several times in the past but she didn't close the doors until close time. After close, a woman arrived at one of the doors and the waitress let her in and fed her. It was so nice to be see and for me, that deserves so much praise and restores faith in humanity especially after being treated like crap at another restaurant we chose not to eat at. I always choose to support places with good people. I go to pay trying to get out of hair. Despite appearing so busy, she was so friendly. I praised the service and food. She walked to our table as we were preparing to leave and she was engaged in conversation with the kids. My daughter was talking about dress shopping for a school dance. We mention how far from home we were and she mindfully pieces together it's a long drive home still, it's a school night, kids and self exhausted. She grabs a bag and gives us to go beverages. Honestly the kindness made me a bit emotional. The restaurant was past business hours and she had just sat someone and had yet to take her order and still made us feel welcome and not rushed. My kids were adamant we had to come back soon. Spend your money here. The food was fantastic. Everything was seasoned to perfection. Plentiful amounts will leave you satisfied both today and tomorrow. You don't have to question the cleanliness of this place like some of the hole in the wall places we've seen. 5 stars for delicious food--fajitas, tacos, and outstanding refried beans were all fabulous and fresh. The salsas were also tasty. The service was 3 stars for us--pleasant but absent minded and inconsistent. Ambience was fine--lots of windows and light, clean, and comfy seating. They were out of the beer and wine we wanted, but the house margarita was a good stand in. It was an early dinner on a Friday night. I understand why a few reviewers commented on the noise level. It was fine with only 3 tables full, but it was getting loud as we wrapped up our time and the restaurant started to fill with the dinner crowd. We'll be back for more. read more

Our family came here on a whim for dinner. Very impressed to say the least! We were greeted and seated right away. Our server was friendly and sociable. He wasn't hovering but still attentive to our table. It is on the smaller side but expected of a restaurant right downtown. Only negative is the seating next to the window. You're leaning on the windowsill which is not too comfortable. Food was delicious! Portions were big! We enjoyed each and every dish. I wasn't expecting to like this place, but I DO and it's WONDERFUL. We wanted to try something old (Mexican, a staple in this household) but something new (a place we'd never been to). This had a lot of positive reviews, so we schlepped downtown and were happy to see it was packed - but not TOO packed so we had to wait for a table. The menu is extensive and we tried several dishes. They have a large seafood section, including a whole fried fish. The enchiladas were tasty, and it's one of the only places in town that offer picadillo. The tortillas are definitely freshly made and hot when they arrive at your table, and the carne asada was some of the most tender stuff I've had in a long time. They have terrific margaritas, and while they are not as Big as your Mama, what they lack in size they do make up for in a better house tequila. We'll be back to try more dishes, because the service was friendly and just the icing on a delicious cake. read more

I got the 3 tacos and it had some of the Driest chicken I have ever had, it felt as if the quality was focused more on the bean dip and pile of rice rather than the entree, tacos had absolutely no flavor, tasted like tree bark. Deeply disappointed and disturbed. All those who dined and paid with credit card, you better check your credit card charges/statements. Food was fine but the service was super slow and inattentive. Had to ask for the same thing multiple times and wait around a long time. For example, my drink came almost towards the end of the meal. To reflect this terribly inattentive service, we tipped $5 (total invoice ~ $64). However, upon seeing the actual amount charged, I was quite shocked. I had to dig up my receipt to re-check. They must have added "1" in front of $5 because tip turned into $15 and my total charge increased by $10. My guess is that the server/restaurant routinely does this and no customers have really noticed/complained. Shame on them for being so dishonest and cheating their customers by making fraudulent changes to the final amount. Pretty bold of them to take this kind of risk. Came last night and was very impressed with this spot. The space was clean and not too noisy even though they were busy for a Sunday night. We were helped quickly and the service was friendly but rushed as they were pretty full. Margaritas were delicious, we had the classic in a fishbowl glass and then a Senor Lopez Marg that had muddled citrus and was awesome. Food was good and you could tell it was made with fresh ingredients. The light bulb went on as I was driving hungrily down Holly St. I pulled over to Yelp it and saw only one review, so I went to the website. The first thing that stood out was the word "tamal." Bingo! (I'm always looking for authentic :) Incoming! I was greeted by the owner, who was prepping a row of beautiful, frosty Michelangelo mugs, and my taste buds began to tingle. I asked to sit near the bar so I could watch her process. The menu arrived, and I was was disheartened to see the printer had added the letter E to the end of each authentic "tamal,' so asked b4 ordering how the Chiles Rellenos were prepared (I have learned to do this, since many local 'Mexican' (NOT!) restaurants wrap the chili in a (gasp!) OMLETTE!), and was assured they were dipped, then fried (authentic). I was delighted to see they were served with guacamole, a very nice touch :) The owner took my order, and started me off with chips; a very tasty salsa casera, with non of the off-notes that ruin it for me at several local 'Mexican' restaurants; and a tall, frosty Michelada, made with my choice of cerveza (today, Negro Medelo). Absofnlutely delicious, and best restaurant salsa I've had in WhatCo since Luis closed his place (by old Albertson's) years ago. My meal soon arrived, nicely plated and NOT drenched in cheese (authentic) like most other local Mexican restaurants. I was a very happy guera indeed! Oh, BTW, the chili was a poblano, not an Anaheim (authentic), and the cheese was Mexican, not Monterey Jack (they melt differently), The best part ever? The owner was singing Mexican songs as she tended bar (just like I used to hear at Luis's :). That sealed the deal - I now have a go-to spot for my sit-down Mexican Jones, after a long, dry spell since the aforementioned Luis's closed many years ago. We came in for dinner later in the evening after the dinner rush, there was only 1 other table however they seemed extremely busy with take out orders. Our food was pretty average for Bellingham. Nothing especially stood out to me as outstanding. The salsa had a good sweetness with a little kick, we enjoyed our meals, the beans were under seasoned but the beef in the chimichanga had beautiful flavor. The waitress was nice and attentive. Guided by the charming Erica, our meal was close to perfect. The chef is from Michoacán, and his rich, chocolate molè was absolutely delicious.
