I had always wanted a GSD since I can remember. Since they require work, we waited until we were at a stage in our lives where we had the time to put in with one. I believe it's important to do your research on breeds that fit your lifestyle. GSD's have a bit of a reputation for numerous issues, so it was extremely important I found a breeder that focused on the health and temperament of their dogs. The right breeder is really important to us. Our last dog was a Black and Tan Coonhound that we found from a wonderful and renowned breeder in Oregon. I cast my net wide when looking for the right dog since this is a decade-plus commitment and a member of the family. In doing my research I realized there are quite a lot of varieties of GSDs. Working, show, East German, West German, Czech, West German Show, American Show, multiple coat colors and lengths. It can be overwhelming. I was very specific in what I wanted, a female sable. I searched many breeders and came across SentinelHarts Kennels. The website was extremely informative and detailed. I learned so much more about the breed and it allowed me an opportunity to see the results of her breeding practices with past and present males, females, and pups in her program. So many of my questions were already answered from the information provided in the easy to navigate website. Camilla was quick to respond to my inquires. She had interviewed me as much as I did her. Some might be put off by that thinking they are the "customer" however, I would be alarmed if she did not. My previous dog breeders were the same. People tend to obtain dogs on looks and emotions without really knowing what they are getting into. Responsible breeders make sure their pups are going into the right environment to the right people who understand what they are getting into. On our site visit, we went through the same disinfecting procedures with our footwear and hands before entering the dog area as we did when entering the Koala exhibit at the zoo. The facility (her family home) was large, clean and immaculately maintained. She was inviting, informative and allowed us plenty of time to engage with the puppies. Camilla kept us updated on the status of the pups while we anxiously waited for the 8week mark to pick up. Because GSDs can have multiple types per litter if you want something specific you may have to wait for a future litter since nature has the upper hand on what comes out. There were only 2 female sables in the litter I was interested in. She is very clear about 1st pick rights for her line so we waited to see if we would receive Lime or Purple girl. We were given the purple girl which was the one in her sights to keep. This was a very special litter and we were in a special timing situation where we preferred not to wait for the next litter so my college daughter could bond with the pup while home on winter break. When she told us we could have her due to the circumstances were overjoyed. Yeah, I know everyone says this about their dog, but she is special. She is everything I wanted. Her temperament is amazingly sweet and loving with not just our family but with everyone who walks through our door. She's alert and always on sentry to protect our property and family but backs down the moment she realizes there is no threat. This is 100% what I was looking for since we live in a remote area and I am often alone. A guard dog that was also approachable. She is the exact size I was hoping for and her markings and coat are beautiful. Once I was walking around our local reservoir and a woman with two equally beautiful GSDs was walking towards me asked if my dog was a SentinelHeart Pup. I belong to a few Sable FaceBook groups and I'm constantly asked where she came from. I do believe she is a stellar dog and that is the result of the careful and diligent practices of SentinelHart Kennels. Her heart and soul go into her dogs and it shows. The follow-up communication has been wonderful. She is quick to respond to new parent questions and gives great recommendations. The bonus for me is that she was a short drive away. Regarding pricing, she was right on the mark with the other quality breeders I researched. I would be wary of any dog under that price point as there is a lot of expense that goes into acquiring the right breeding stock, titling, proper facility, vet expenses, importing, care, I could go on for days. If you want to play roulette with your pup then shop price point. She often provides me with training information and questions I have regarding unexpected dog things that have popped up over the years. She does all the health screening for her dogs, and really cares about the well-being of the dogs that come from her kennel. She is a Schutzhund/Sport dog handler and understands a lot about what makes a great german shepherd dog aside from physical features. She cares a lot about the temperment of the dogs rather than only caring about colors/coat. At 8 weeks dog pick up day, she provided a package of proof of health tests/vaccines, information about the parents, AKC registration documents, and much more. Dog: extremely level-headed, works with good obedience in high drive. I've been told by seasoned dog handlers that he is a "thinker" and "extremely biddable". Wants to work for the handler. Very responsive to corrections/rewards. Excellent coat, very nice features. Ive been told by seasoned show people that his conformation appears to be excellent (I have no idea myself). The litters Sentinelharts has vary in "activity level" and Camilla will match you with a litter appropriately if necessary. For example, two high drive parents that are highly successful in Schutzhund might not be producing puppies good for a house wanting a low energy "easy" puppy. When I first moved out to the Bay Area (March 2019), I knew that I would be interested in adding to my family by getting a puppy. I have wanted a German Shepherd for years. I had fostered GSD's in college, and had been a vet tech for several years and have seen all sizes, shapes, and temperaments of GSD's. When we began our search, my fiancé and I had a pretty good idea what we were looking for. We did NOT want the hyper-angulated standard black and tan, but had fallen in love with the dark sable color and working-dog type build. For as long as I can remember I have always wanted a dog. Every time I did well on a test, Christmas was coming up, or if it was my birthday I would ponder asking my parents if I could have a dog. Finally, after many years of wondering, I asked my parents just before my fifteenth birthday. To my surprise, they agreed! The dog of choice was a german shepherd. My dad looked for any breeders nearby and we came by Camila Hart, a german shepherd breeder with what seemed to be like quite a lot of experience. We went and visited her and her dogs and spent hours asking questions about the german shepherds. After leaving, we were promised a puppy! It was to be in her "D4" litter and we were first in line! We gladly signed a contract and her other agreements too. When the "C4" litter was born someone wanted to move down since they wanted a boy. However, we never really wanted to be moved up and would rather remain in "D4", but she moved us up anyways. Still, this wasn't too bad and we still were getting the black, female german shepherd we wanted. At this point, it had been at least two months that we had been in contact with her. About 4 weeks afterward, the puppy we had reserved had to be put down due to sustained head injuries. After learning, I spent the next two days crying. I can easily get emotionally attached and it broke my heart knowing that the puppy that was destined for me was now dead. I had spent almost 3 months dreaming, thinking, and preparing for the puppy. It was already bad enough, but Camila showed no empathy for how my family and I felt. She didn't abide by the rules of the contract which state, "Any deposits on litters that are not fulfilled are transferred to the next available litter." Instead, she moved us to the last litter available, despite having four available litters. We were willing to compromise and my father tried talking to her, but she immediately burst into anger because my dad didn't understand why we were in the last available litter. She started yelling at my dad who was trying to keep a calm composure. She then followed by hanging up and told us to find another breeder and returned our deposit. Overall, she was stubborn, rude, and mean to my dad. I didn't know what to do. My promised dog was gone, the three months I spent researching was wasted, my family was sad, and worst of all we were shown zero sympathy. I'm fifteen and I have never written a review before, but I believe this needs to be said so no one is shoved into the dirt like my family. If you are looking for a dog breeder, I recommend you find someone else who doesn't treat you like trash after three months of waiting. Don't try to discredit what I have to say. My father tried to get a better understanding of what was happening, but you just yelled at him. I was looking for a purebred German Shepard and after screening several breeders I went to check out SentinelHarts. I was impressed right away with Camilla's interest in me and my goals for the puppy and also what kind of owner I would be for the dog. She has everyone's best interests truly at heart. SentinelHarts is a very well run operation, with keeping things clean for the puppies a top priority. (She had us dip our shoes in a bleach solution before we could enter the pen with the puppies.) She was patient, and willing to let us come in several times to select the right puppy, and then allowing us to visit our puppy before she was old enough to come home with us. My husband found Camilla and we were lucky enough to get one of her puppies. We were allowed to visit the litter twice before making our final decision on which puppy we would call our own. We were able to meet the mom as well. Our girl is now 1 and she is the love of our lives. She is so smart and vibrant. She is attentive and motivated. After having researched breeders in the area and visiting a few we were came across SentinelHarts quite by accident. They were recommended to us by a breeder in Kansas. We visited Camilla and just fell in love with her. She was direct and asked us very pointed questions about our readiness to bring in a puppy and eventually a big dog into our lives. Once the puppy was born she frequently sent us pictures and when we visited her and she spent over 2 hours answering our questions. She's made a real effort to make us feel comfortable and we eventually got exactly the pup we wanted. She breeds working dogs and its quite incredible to see the difference between a strong working dog and a dog bred for show. We got our (now 11 month old) German Shepherd from Camilla at Sentinel Harts. I have owned many German Shepherds, and I think this dog is the best one yet! Camilla was great about letting me meet her dogs, helping me pick a good litter (really breed combination...I had to wait for the actual litter) based on what I wanted. I was looking for a family dog that I could also do obedience and tracking with, and our pup is just wonderful! She has drive, but not so much she can't chill w/the family.
