This is definitely the place to go for all your pet needs. Bob and his staff are super friendly and helpful. They have a free roaming cat, dog, and of course Pearl in the back ready to greet you with a "hello!" This particular visit I purchased 3 mice for my snake and some treats for the doggos . We came into the pet store with our small dog, Holly, and within 2 seconds of entering the building a cat owned by the pet store ran out from behind a rack and attacked my dog. Holly showed no aggression towards the cat in any way and was very confused and was trying to to dodge the cat's claws. The cat was aggressively pursuing Holly and scratching at her. Then I personally stepped in to shield Holly back and put my hand in front of the cat to separate it from attacking my dog, at which time it lunged at my hand and scratched me. You can see that Holly has a red swollen lip, and the cats claw punctured my thumb. The young girl working at the store came and picked up the cat and apologized. We immediately walked out of the store and my wife waited in the car with the dog. I approached the front desk where an older man was working the counter. I said "Dude, your cat just relentlessly attacked my dog for no reason and then attacked me when I separated them." He looked super annoyed at me and said "Well we don't allow dogs in the store when the cat is out." I said "How was I supposed to know that I wasn't supposed to bring my dog in the store because the cat is out!? Are there any signs saying that I shouldn't bring my dog into the pet store?" He replied with "no, we don't have any signs"... Then he just blankly stared at me like I was an idiot. Who in the world allows an aggressive cat to roam freely in a pet store??? He's lucky that my dog is quick and was able to mostly stay safe, and that I'm a quick young man. Could you imagine if I was an old lady with an old dog? This dude had absolutely no remorse and thought that I was the dummy for bringing my friendly little dog into his pet store lol. Absolutely ridiculous read more

All of these animals are kept horribly, all of the rodent enclosures are overcrowded. All of the snakes I saw were severely underweight, many didn't have a heat source and many of the enclosures were littered with shed. The crested gecko enclosures were covered in urate and feces, with multiple adults housed in too small of enclosures. All of these animals look sick and unhappy, I would recommend not supporting this business and getting your pets elsewhere or considering adopting from a reptile rescue. It seems understaffed and mismanaged, which is probably why the animals are being kept this way. Given how easy some of these animals care is (crested geckos especially) i am shocked how wrong it's being done in this establishment. read more

Bob, the owner, is the greatest. He really cares about his animals and so do the younger folks who work there. I had to move abruptly and Bob took in my two ball pythons and helped me sell them. There is a large selection of everything - snakes, small critters, birds, fish, lizards...the list goes on. My sister has these little water turtles that love to eat baby mice. So my sister wanted to get mice to breed her own turtle food. I don't know I'm just the driver in this situation. This place looks really tiny on the outside but when you actually go in its pretty big in there. I did look for something for my dog but they didn't have anything that stuck out to me. Also, some of the dog treats were expired. In the rodent/lizard holding area they had many many different types of animals to look at. They have a cockatoo bird that lets everyone know, "I'm Happy." Apparently anyone can walk over and pick her up. My sister tried but it snapped at her. She almost got on my arm but then decided not to. The rabbits were so cute and I have wanted to get a rabbit for a while and it was really hard not to get the black one that they had for sale in here. The baby feeder mice were in a medium aquarium and they are so sweet and cute. How can something so small just let people handle them like that with total trust. At least we weren't going to be killing ours just the babies we hope they have. I cant believe I'm writing this. The coolest thing in here to me was the Black Widow in the bottle. They don't sell Black Widows they just have this one on display. I told my mom I want on for Christmas. They feed it a cricket like once a month. The bottle it was in was so cool. Like an old pirate bottle with a forked twig in it so she can make her web. I want one so bad I had dreams about it that night. There was nothing for me in here but I did really like seeing so many birds, fish, mammals, lizards and spiders all in less than an hour. It didn't even smell bad like some hole-in-the-wall pet stores smell like. I would leave 0 stars if I could. All of the animals are living in horrible conditions. Bird enclosures are dirty and overcrowded, with small cages and no toys or anything to do. Betta fish are living in literal dirty jars with no filtration or heaters- any betta owner would easily tell you that they require at least a 5 gallon filtered aquarium. Small animals like mice and rats are being sold as feeders (which is not ethical) and kept in overcrowded glass tanks. I did not see any food available other than seeds, which is not the proper diet. Even the rats that were being sold as pets were kept in small glass tanks with nothing in there but one hide and a water bottle. These are abhorrent conditions and as a rat owner of many years, I clearly told the shop owner that rats need large cages with lots of ventilation and things to do such as hammocks and chew toys. Without proper ventilation, food, and a clean large wire cage they will get sick very quickly and some poor rats were already showing signs of respiratory illness from being in the tanks. It breaks my heart that such amazing sweet animals are suffering all because of THIS SHOP. The shop owner DOES NOT CARE and is clearly VERY MISNFORMED about rat care. These babies need to get out of there and this place CLOSED. This person was so misinformed that he tried to tell me that he had a pet rat that lived in a tank live till 8 years old.. The lifespan of a pet rat is 2 -3 years with 4/5 years being extremely rare. 3 years for a rat is already 120 human years already! Do not take any small animal advice from him, go to a local rat rescue or look up proper care online, because he doesn't even know the basics. He couldn't give a rat's as* about any of the animals in this store. He is willfully choosing to continue unethical treatment of these animals even when they have a whole bunch of thrifted cages/supplies in the back that could be used to at least provide better housing. I walked out and could never support a place that treats animals like a commodity and makes them suffer. DO NOT SUPPORT PET STORES LIKE THIS. I don't care if it is cheap, you are actively harming animals by supporting places that do not have the decency to provide even a semblance of adequate care but just keep stocking their shelves. Read the other 1 star reviews from actual experienced fish/reptile/small animal owners. I sincerely hope this place goes bankrupt and closes down. read more

I love this store! My brother bought his gecko food & supplies here and recommended I check it out for my 1-year old Betta fish and my 3 hermit crabs. I went there for bigger hermit crab shells and betta fish treats & I was impressed! They have a huge selection of different sized/shaped glass tanks, plenty of food/toys for all kinds of animals & reptiles and of course... plenty of shells :) From the few times I've shopped there I have been impressed with their customer service, friendliness, knowledge, and their great prices. Items I used to buy at Petco are half the price at the Village Pet Shop for example: Betta fish floaties, calci-sand, and tank decor. I bought a large purple-pincher hermit crab (a little bigger than a golf-ball) at the store. He is very healthy & lively once I got him home. The owner has a wide variety of reptiles, Betta fish and little pets like bunnies. I would recommend trying the Village Pet Shop before Petco or PetExtreme! Love this shop. It's the pet shop you wish you had as a kid. Dogs sniffing around, birds gazing at you uncaged, a tortoise pawing about on the floor. There's a reason you can't find rabbits in pet stores anymore, it's because they require lots of care, pens not cages, and live for ten years. This is a breeding ground for traumatizing and killing rabbits. They hardly had any hay or any room to roam in the slightest (tiny cages for animals the size of cats?) and were drinking from water bottles when they should have bowls. They also had pine shavings which is known to make rabbits sick.. I absolutely loved this place as a kid, probably my favorite place to go, and this is so sad to see now that I have a rabbit at home. One of them just chewed through a bunch of fabric from stress I'm assuming. Do not let them board or pet sit your rabbit or bunny or bunnies. I'm not even sure why they do this if they can't provide the basics of care they need to stop. They had probably ten rabbits in there they were pet sitting and two babies for sale or adoption. read more

When the pandemic hit I had trouble finding crickets in livermore they were sold out everywhere. That's when I found village pet and they are great! He never sold out of crickets, his staff is super helpful and knowledgeable. Our gecko stopped eating and we had to wait 4 weeks to get into a reptile veterinarian. The staff here suggested to bring her in so we did. After checking her over and asking questions our gecko laid eggs. I had piece of mind until our appointment and vet said the same thing that staff at village pet. Pretty sure they will watch reptiles while you are away! This is a ma n' pop type store for pet goods. I came here specifically for shrimp other than ghost shrimp. The had some cherry shrimp that will look perfect in my established tank! Super tiny and cute plus I got one that is preggers! Staff here are very friendly and helpful. Prices are pretty attractive! Will definitely be back and update the review with what they carry. Totally agree with the previous reviewer. The owner is a nice man, who always helps. No matter how busy. I also commend him for not putting the Beta fish in small bowls, where they get depressed and sick. All it takes is one beta per fish tank and they are fine. His animals all look very well taken care of. And he has a surprising variety and even some birds that are not sold at the regular large scale stores. Doves, quails. Cool. I've been coming here since I moved here a few years ago and though I've tried the other big pet stores I always come back here and refer people here whenever I can. The prices are much better here too! You are always greeted when you walk in weather it be a snuff from a floppy ear puppy, a meow from the kitty , a hello from the birds or a smile and a "what can I get for you today" from the owner. There is always a good selection of products and critters. I've never had any problems with the snake food (mice) I bought here and my snake is always appreciative. They love animals and you can tell everyone is well taken care of. I don't understand why anyone would have anything bad to say unless they had some personal beef and are trying to be vindictive about it. Unfortunately that happens a lot on Yelp. read more

I loved going to village, and have been going there forever. But the cleanliness of the place has felt pretty bad lately, and the worst part is their are often multiple dead fish sitting in multiple different tanks, with workers around but no intent to deal with it, so they sit there for ages. I bought 3 new fish and put them in my healthy environment which lead to those three fish dying, along with all 3 of my other healthy fish. The fish obviously had some sort of disease, possibly fungal, and gave it to my other ones. I'm really upset that the quality of village pet shop has gone down very far, and don't think I'll be able to buy fish from there in the future read more

Super nice people with reasonable prices! We entrusted the owner to care for our bearded dragon while we were on vacation. At the time he was "babysitting" several other animals. Our beardie was well cared and wouldn't hesitate to have them take care of him again. It's good to see an old fashioned pet store that is willing to offer "babysitting" services, quite generous and they only charged us forty dollars for the two weeks were on vacation. read more

I was going to leave a 1 star review because they were not open during business hours??? But I waited there for about an hour & then they opened.. I was not satisfied at all with my first visit because one of the ladies cleaning out the animal cages didn't even smile at us or acknowledge us/ ask us if we needed help. She was not friendly at all.. but I decided to give this place another chance. I came here & bought some hamsters & the guy was extremely friendly.. we got our hamsters a cage & some food for around $60. The hamster food here is also very cheap. Also the little cat & dog walking around are super cute as well. UPDATE: I always come back here for hamster food since it's cheap. But when I come here at 11 they're still closed & I end up waiting until 12 or so just for some hamster food. The past 3 times I came here, they were never Open on time. Always late 30+ min. The owner or whoever is always chatting with other customers about random stuff and pays no attention to the paying customer waiting patiently for 10 minutes to be helped. read more
