Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurants are where reviewers for the Michelin Guide eat when they're spending their own money. I try to make a habit of finding them. This was one. I went for lunch and got in without a wait. It's quite an elegant spot, adjoining an equally elegant hotel. Nice arty looking menu, which I spent too much time translating from Catalan with the Google "word lens" augmented reality app which lets you point the phone camera at text and get an instant translation superimposed on the view. It was "too much time" because if I'd turned the menu pages, I would've found the English version! They bring a paper cone with an impressive portion of fine olives and some excellent fresh bread as starters. I had a fish stew which was good, and excellent spicy mussels, which were one of the best dishes I tried during a week in Barcelona. Portions were quite generous. I was stuffed. The price came to about 25 euros. This struck me as an extraordinary value, after dropping more than that for a nasty small lunch the day before at the popular tapas spot at the entrance to the Boqueria market on Las Ramblas. High end setting, great service and fine food for a fraction of what you'd expect to pay. read more

The fit out of the restaurant it lovey. Ambiance is spot on, tables aren't too close to each other and it's quite an intimate setting. That's easily the best part. Waiters were friendly but not great. It took more than ten minutes after sitting down to get a drinks order and the restaurant was only half full. Had to get someone's attention every time we needed something, and we filled our own wine glasses throughout the night. Definitely not terrible though. The tuna steak was overcooked and didn't seem fresh. The rest of the meal was so-so. This definitely isn't the worst place but I wouldn't put it high on your list. read more

Dived into first Barcelona meal here. Was not disappointed. I'm just gonna give a blow by blow. The croquettas tasted like breaded, deep fried stroghanoff. If that doesn't sound like culinary heaven, I will send you there. We ordered some thick, crusty bread, thinking it would be perfect with the Catalonian Stew I ordered. It was, and was also completely unnecessary because it is a physical impossibility to finish the stew. The stew is served in a cast iron pot and jam packed with about ten different cuts of meat. It's what I imagine a butcher would have eaten in the 1st century. Inside the pot: beef kidneys, blood sausage, pork loin, some unidentifiable cuts from a chicken, what looked to be oxtail, and a handful of other meats boiled in chicken broth and water with carrots, cabbage and maybe one or two other savories. Really basic, really heavy, really medieval. Happy I tried it. I'll probably look into making some for myself when I get back home, if I can get my hands on beef kidneys and a few street urchins. I think the dish would be best served with a table of street urchins looking at me with big, longing eyes as soup dribbles down my chin. Also had a nibble of the lady's beef medallions. They came smothered in a sauce that would be right at home on a Christmas roast, then I came. The final touch was a desert I didn't need, since I couldn't finish my pot of meat. It was a desert from Catalan. Extravagant. Heavy. Chilled chocolate mousse on the bottom, a half inch of gelato above it, with a custard above the gelato. That sounds excessive, no? Yeah but why not light some sugar on fire on top of the mess. Nothing isn't improved with molten sugar, right? Turns out it was improved by molten sugar. The whole thing turned out great. Cooled us down and fattened us up. Could be improved with a few sprigs of mint, but I don't know whether that would be as authentic to the region. We were planning on stumbling upstairs immediately after, having taken the red eye over the night before. Our waitress instead talked us into taking a stroll. Great, we'll take a 10 minute walk through the Gothic we said. 2 hours later we finally made it back, took showers and slept like rocks. If you want a traditional meal, you have to come to Senyor Parellada for a simple, but great meal. Mussels Mussels Mussels! You have to try the slightly spicy, but amazing mussels from the appetizer section here. They literally are the best I've ever had and only 7.50€. They are so fresh and the sauce is amazing. You can dip some of the bread in the sauce and it'll be a perfect meal by itself. The roasted snails seemed like a interesting concept, however the flavor was terrible. They were fresh, but the seasoning or something made it impossible to finish. We only had a few pieces and it was enough for me. The Cannelloni with roasted veal and truffle was good. I liked it, but nothing too special. The sauce was not too heavy and the veal wasn't too overpowering. Overall, I would say to try some of the other dishes because the quality of the ingredients are pretty good and the place is lovely for dinner. Their house wines are pretty good as well. No matter what dish you try here, you've got to get the mussels with spicy dressing. You'll remember it as being of the most memorable dishes for a long time. read more

Not a cheap place but a good one I'm not giving 5 stars because the waiter was pretty upset because one person in our reservation couldn't make it. We were still 10 people. Don't let the fancy looks of this place fool ya - the menu (and the price) was a lot more approachable. Once you figure out that the menu is translated in several languages, zoom in on what looks good from the starters and the main entrée sections. We opted for Mediterranean mussels and a refreshing salad of octopus and greens. Both of these were good and the salad, in particular, is something I would most likely try to make at home. Unfortunately, neither of the main entrees were executed as successfully with the paella being just mediocre and my fillet of dorado had more bones than I was willing to pick out (it's a good thing I'm quite patient with this task). Because it's a fancier looking place and situated next to a hotel, it had a lot of international guests that I felt overwhelmed the servers. They were not rude - they were simply understaffed. I might recommend other eateries in the area and with this being located in Born - you will surely find one! read more

We wanted to find a nice Catalan restaurant, and chose It based on Yelp reviews and the proximity to our hotel. Unfortunately this is the first time yelp let me down this trip. Atmosphere was nice. However food was mediocre. We had the croquettes, spicy mussels, lamb and pig trotter. Croquettes were nice. Mussels were interesting but overdone. The mains were very disappointing. Highlight of the lamb was the grilled garlic that accompanied it. Trotters were drenched in heavy sauce. Catalan cooking usually focuses on the freshness of the produce. I felt they tried to cover it up with sauces. Service was welcoming but slow. Had to remind the waitress for olive oil... a staple... Disappointed. read more

After a long day of walking, this restaurant offered just the cozy, classy atmosphere that we needed for a warm, relaxing dinner. We waited in line for about 20 minutes to get a table, but it was well worth the wait. Everything we ate was delicious. My husband had a tuna steak, and I had the canneloni. For dessert, I had the creme catalan, which set the standard for us for the rest of our trip around Spain. The decor is cozy, with great lighting, warm colours, and a mix of styles that makes anyone (of all ages) feel welcome. Definitely recommend! read more

My go-to restaurant in Barcelona. I came here as a broke college student when I wanted a nice meal in a sophisticated atmosphere. The food is flavorful and well-presented, and priced very reasonably. Great ambiance, food and service! The restaurant was recommended by our hotel concierge and we're very happy to have been there. We had the artichoke and wild mushrooms to start, followed by the pan fried escargot (very delicious and it was a pan full...didn't expect such a big serving...if I knew I wouldn't have ordered another entree as this dish was entree size), the duck entree and the octopus with mashed potatoes entree. All were very well presented and tasty. We ended with the souffle topped with vanilla ice cream and meringue...a very nice ending! I would recommend this restaurant if you're looking for a nice romantic dinner. Price seemed reasonable to me - our total was 59 euros (before tip). read more

Besides the already mentioned Hotel Banys Oriental, I am also in favour for the attached Restaurant Senyor Parellada. Fantastic Food, focussing on catalan aspects and avoiding molecular trends. The quality of the ingredients and sophisticated combinations is what this restaurant stands for. They have so called evergreens on the menu, which are served since the 90ties and are very excellent. I am always amazed about the low prices for excellent wine in this restaurant. Pricing for the food is considering the quality, the excellent services and the famous ambiance also surprising. Reservations need to be done quite early, but as a hotel guest you will probably always get a table. read more

As a first time visitor to spain, I was extremely displeased with how this place treated tourists. First, be aware that nothing is free. The bread and wine they rush to your table without request both cost money. Second, after having drunk the tap water in Barcelona for a few days and not having a problem with it, I asked our server for "agua del grifo" (tap water). The server said I could not have tap water, only bottled. When I clarified why i could not have tap water, our server explained that the tap water in all of Spain was contaminated and it was against the law to for him to serve it. I suspect this a tourist only policy. Finally, the bill was in catalan and had to ask my server to clarify a few lines on the bill. We were charged for wine we didn't have (another trend I've noticed in Spain - check your bill!). Our server begrudgingly fixed our bill and was all too happy to see is go. I spoke spanish, and spoke politely. The attitude of this server seems endemic of the rest of Spain. They want tourist dollars, but don't want to provide the appropriate service to earn it. It's as if by virture of being Spain, tourists owe them money. Despite Rick Steve's recommendation, avoid this place if you're a tourist. read more

Was recommended to us by our business partner in Barcelona. In the busy El Born neighborhood and right on the main walking street Carrer de l'Argenteria. From the outside it looks a bit fancy, pricy, and touristy. Yes, there were a good deal of tourists and the look is white table cloth, but the menu was reasonably priced, food excellent, and service among the best on our trip. Recommended if you want a nice white table cloth meal with a traditional one appetizer and one entre meal. Good wine list, not overpriced. Excellent. read more

And when I say this it's not because of the typical European way of dragging dinner out hours and not starting until 8:30. This restaurant came highly recommended by our local tour guide. She was shocked when we told her about our poor service there, and felt it was very important that we write this review. 1. From the start, our waiter was very rushed, to the point that he knocked over the bottle of water that we had just purchased. He never offered to replace the bottle. 2. We told our waiter we had some dietary restrictions, as we asked for recommendations from the menu, He would not listen to us. Instead, he said, "I always recommend these four things", and pointed out his recommendations. 3. Our salmon came with no bernaise sauce, as it should have had. We forgot about it, and tried to enjoy it. As we were almost finished with the fish, our waiter put a dish of cold, congealed bernaise sauce on the table, though he admitted, when asked, that it was supposed to have been hot and spread onto the fish. 4. We asked for a white wine by the glass. He returned with a bottle, and poured the glass, without asking what kind of white wine we wanted, or even telling us what he poured. read more

Packs out on a busy Saturday mid-day so I recommend an earlier visit. Excellent bread with piquant olive oil which whets your appetite. Really nice, creative menu for a high cuisine lunch or dinner. This is a nice sit down restaurant in the popular barrio gotico neighborhood. The atmosphere is romantic and the restaurant itself feels upscale. Unfortunately I wasn't too impressed by the food. I had the beef fillet which I found to be quite tough and not very flavorful and my husband had the monkfish which he said was rubbery. The service was pretty good, although not many of their staff spoke English. All in all I would say I enjoyed the experience but the food was not worth the 80€ spent. read more

We had a last minute reservation and we were lucky to find a place. This is a chic restaurant with a classy interior reminding colonial architecture. We had a group of 8 people and were very happy with choice. I got a tuna tartare as starter which was chunks of tuna and it was delicious. For the main, I went for mixed fish dish which was local Catalan. Honestly it was not my taste of fish in general but quality and freshness was good. When ordering the snails, The table next to us actually asked for small forks for us because the waiters did not give them to us and wouldn't pay attention. Expected an excellent meal here given the Michelin BIB rating, Yelp reviews and recommendation from my AirBnB host. I had the Wednesday Traveler's Lunch, basically, their version of Menu del Dia, for E18. My first course was a small green salad, perfectly dressed, with a small toast with a square of pate. The main course for the day was rice with crispy squid. Unfortunately the risotto-like rice was under-cooked and chalky; I am not talking al dente, I know what al dente is and expect it in anything risotto-like. However, the crispy bits of deep-fried calamari were very good and made a nice textural contrast to the rice. Overall, however, the dish was quite heavy. For dessert I had some traditional small cookies with a glass of vermouth. The cookies were dry and not terribly interesting, and I dipped them in the vermouth for flavor and softening. I don't really feel justified in criticizing them, however, because I suspect it's a traditional and acquired taste, like biscotti. I went back for lunch the next day and ordered off the menu. Craving vegetables after several days in Barcelona with no vegetable sides, I ordered the sauteed seasonal vegetables as my first course. A substantial plate of cauliflower, Romanesco broccoli, cabbage, potatoes, chard, French string beans, onions, and beets were the seasonal vegetables, steamed, sauteed, and with no seasoning. Seasonal vegetables?! It was early September and the markets were still full of tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, courgettes and the rest of the late summer bounty, none of which made it to my plate. To add to my dismay, several bites had some noticeable grit that suggested insufficient washing- probably of the chard. The lamb was in fact, a lamb shank. This was another disappointment, as I had been expecting a couple of thin slices of succulent lamb. I don't think I can entirely fault the restaurant for this, because I didn't inquire about the cut; the menu simply described it as cooked with forty cloves of garlic. However, most restaurants, in my experience, specify lamb shank when that is what they are serving. It itself was tasty with a bulb of soft garlic and lovely jus; it came with half a boiled potato. For dessert, I had something like a cold mousse of "red fruits" that I would say was okay, but nothing memorable. Visually the restaurant is lovely: quiet and elegant without being stuffy. We tried to go there a couple of days ago based on good review from our guide book. It was full for the night so we booked our place for today at 8.30. We went there on time, there was a long waiting line but we were seated in couple of minutes then the rush began! A waiter who didnt speak any english nor french and i even doubt he speaks spanish came 3 times to take our order in 5 min. At the end we decided to share 1 starter and 1 one main course and some wine (we were two). Then 3 min later all the dishes came at the same time! We had to repeat 4 time we wanted to share the plates but the waiter couldnt get it at all. Such a disapointment. We would think we were in such a good restaurant but they couldnt even serve the starters before the main dish and they were in such a rush to us be finished before the next round of customer to come in and spend their money on this rubbish cuisine! I say rubbish because it tasted as hell and even our neighbour table asked for creme caramel and they got a half frozen desert!!!! Frozen!!! I tried to communicate my disatisfaction to the head waiter but got nothing but a 'thank you'!! We've been in barcelona for a week now and eaten in most of different places but this is the worst of the worst places we were in!! Such a shame for such a good name. When I planned my trip to Barcelona my must have dinner in Spain was Paella. This restaurant destroyed what should have been a great meal. My wife's tuna was too salty. Our friend and his wife had the Cannelloni and the Hake. The jake was very good the cannelloni was half eaten. I was part of a group of 8 celebrating a birthday. We had made reservations before leaving the US and were looking forward to an excellent meal at this place. The waiter ruined the evening. Not only did he totally screw up the order (main courses came before appetizers, some items came twice and others not at all) he had the audacity to grab the shoulder and speak in a threatening tone of one of the men in the group. Had we not had the waitress and meal of the trip the previous night at Bodega 1900, it would have soured our vacation experience. This is my favorite restaurant in Barcelona and probably in the world (Im from NYC, I know my food). Best Catalan slow-food in town (dont worry dishes come out fast). Surprisingly affordable, nice service, very elegant interior. Do not believe biased tourist reviews below, this place is great and equally popular among locals and tourists (the restaurant is attached to a hotel). If you want a truly special meal for two with a bottle of wine and dessert in a cozy setting for less then 60 euro, this is the place for you. Nothing trendy or molecular (ughh!), everything flavorful, natural, traditional and wholesome. Go treat yourself! read more
