It was great food and great service. Dine is clean. Would come back again. Wanted to update menu and show the food we got.

Good Korean food in University Place!!! They finally opened! This place had a "coming soon" sign outside for at least 2 years. Glad to see they are finally open for business. We finally got around to giving them a try. I love Korean food and am a tough critic of the food because I have had the BEST! From NYC to Los Angeles we have eaten at many of the top spots. This place was nice, but is not one of those top spots. Small casual restaurant, friendly staff will greet you, then you order at the counter and find a table. We ordered: 1 - Korean Chicken Wings - Sweet & Spicy. This was the best dish we ordered. They came out last but had a good crispy outside breading and the sweet/spicy mix worked! Not as good as our Korean BBQ chicken spot in Federal Way, WA but delicious and much closer to home. 2 - La Kalbi - Marinated BBQ short ribs. This dish was really well executed too! Small portion but was only $28 (easily over $40 in other restaurants we have eaten in). Was another winner. 3 - Soon Tofu Soup - with kimchi - I liked the soup but we have other local spots that make it better. 4 - beef Bi-Bim-Bap - served in a hot stone bowl I was disappointed they cooked the egg. Just crack a raw egg on top and let it cook in the hot stone bowl!!! I also wish they offered the dish with spicy pork but they do not (I asked if they could go off menu and make it and was like old no). Had a nice meal but our favorite spot in the International District in Lakewood, WA is better.

I really wanted to love this spot. The food came out looking beautiful -- fresh and well-plated. And the service was absolutely amazing -- super friendly, attentive, and welcoming from start to finish. That said, the flavors didn't quite live up to the visuals. The LA kalbi was way too salty, and the chicken wings were coated in a sauce that was overly sweet. My friend's soup came in a very small portion and was super watered down -- definitely not what we were hoping for. Portion sizes overall felt pretty small for the price, and the seasoning could use some balance. There's definitely potential here, especially with the great service and presentation, but the food just needs a little fine-tuning to really shine.

Food quality: good Service: poor. We have eaten here 2x. First was takeout and had no issues there. They only forgot the sauce for bimbimbop and no utensils. 2nd time we dine in. Terrible customer service. They didn't give us menus and I had to ask for them. They had us waiting for almost 10 minutes. They didn't give any instructions on how to order. They never checked on us. Anytime we needed something I had to go up to front or wait in line. We didn't get extra sides. There was no signs either about this service. Felt very ignored and made our experience sour with the poor customer service and lack of attentive. The food portions were decent sizes but they were overpriced. Atmosphere: feels like it's lacking and unfinished. Notes: I really wish this could've been my new go to korean spot.

    Fried chicken and dumplings

The food exceeded my expectations beyond what I could have hoped for. We ordered five dishes and had to stop ourselves from eating everything in front of us because it was so delicious. We had the Korean fried chicken appetizer and dumplings, then a seafood pancake, bibimbap, and the glassy noodles made from yam that my bestie wanted. Everything was fresh, beautifully presented, and perfectly seasoned. It was truly a feast. Worth seeking out even if you're not from University Place.

The food is Outstanding! This is one of those don't judge a book by its cover deal, doesn't look like much from the outside but inside be prepared for fabulous Korean food. We had vegetable pancake, hot and spicy Korean wings, and of course bulgogi. Authentic flavors my mouth and stomach are both happy. Pro tip: try the bulgogi on top of the pancake and ask for gochujang (Korean hot sauce) to kick it up a little.

Excited to try this place since it's about 7 mins away. Food choices seems appealing. We order tofu soup, it was nothing special. Compared to other tofu soup this didn't live up to my expectations. No water was served and the ban Chan was bland. Would not come again.

    Rose Tteokbokki & Beef Bulgogi

Decided to come here on a weekday night around 8 pm. The building format was kind of odd. The inside looked nice and freshly updated. The interior format looked like it was a converted fast food chain to restaurant. I was told that any orders would be takeout which was fine. I decided to order the rose tteokbokki and beef bulgogi. The order came with rice and a small box of 4 different side dishes, broccoli, bean sprouts, kimchi, and cucumbers. The tteokbokki was okay, nothing extraordinary. I felt like there was too much filler (carrots, lettuce, pepper, onions) and first time having sausage and bacon in this dish. The beef bulgogi was decent and had a lot of filler as well, but it was not my favorite. I didn't try their suggested item, their fried chicken just based on the earlier reviews. Overall, this is an average place and definitely adds diversity in the UP area. I might try this place again to try their other dishes, especially if it was for dine-in.

To-go bibimbap beef with steamed dumplings
    Jamielynn C.

I had the bibimbap beef. I ordered it to-go at the restaurant. The restaurant was very clean but warm inside, like no AC. The service was great, very kind people. The food was beautiful, even it being a to-go order the presentation was so nice. The price isn't inexpensive, but the price wouldn't deter me from going back because the quality of the meal was high and the portions were filling. I'm happy I checked this place out.

Oh my goodness the food is so good here, huge portions! So be aware. Great service and really wonderful sweet staff. This is my new go to spot.

Locals know, this is the place to start with, an original - Ho Soon Yi. Where the place can easily be swallowed up by the hustle and bustle of businesses on a very busy city street, this casual sit-down Korean restaurant has the everyday favorites you are familiar with. Where many Korean American establishments focus on the BBQ aspect, Ho Soon Yi focuses and masters other parts Korean cuisine. Specifically the soups!! And they are tasty!! Definitely the tofu soups are there, but there are appetizers, fried rice, and the traditional small side dishes are also served. My friend and I ordered the savory seafood pancake as the appetizer. As for soups, I ordered the Pork Tofu Soup and it was great! Definitely satisfying, and I didn't miss the BBQ one bit. Yes, the do have kalbi and bulgogi (beef, pork and seafood) but that is for another time. There are definitely plenty dishes to try. And all are tasty. You won't be disappointed. There was nooooo flavor! It desperately needed salt, MSG, soy sauce literally anything to add flavor. The super hot bowl crisped up the rice which was a fun texture but made it stick to my teeth real bad bc it got too crispy. Some parts started to burn bc the pot was so hot. The chicken was non-existent. There were a ton of beansprouts and pickled veggies which costs next to nothing however they charge $20 for this dish. My friend got shrimp fried rice and also had to add seasoning when she got home. For the prices, I'm shocked at how bland and boring the food is. The service was quick and they get packed during lunch hours.

The Mongolian Beef was not good. I didn't care for the sauce, the meat was chewy, and the styrofoam noodles were rancid--and there were a lot of them! The actual portion size was pretty small. The salad on the plate with the Teriyaki and Gyoza was big chunk of lettuce with a giant glob of dressing--pretty unappealing. Service was mediocre. There were flies buzzing around as we ate. But because of my family size and which wasn't stated anywhere on the menu or the facility, I was embarrassed in front of my family and asked to raise it to a minimum of 15%. A shame that this wasn't just reflected in the already high menu prices. Pay your employees instead of having them resort to such atrocious aggressive tactics and begging.
