Here's the thing: before you set foot in this store, you need to know that these people are passionate about their olive oil. It is borderline obsessive. Now, that's not so great when you're amongst the general public--you don't want some stranger walking up to you and attempted to engage you in a 30 minute lecture about how to maximize preservation of olives' natural antioxidants in the pressing process, you would walk away or call the police. However, these same weirdos are perfect when you actually want to purchase the best olive oil you can find. Sepay Grove's marketing strategy, whether it is deliberate or unintended, is to educate the consumer about everything they do to ensure their product is the best. It sounds boring, but if you are an olive oil fan, you will greatly appreciate it. Having purchased Sepay Grove's olive oil and tried it, every other olive oil that I taste has had to live up to their standard and most have failed. They are my first choice of olive oil. They also have an incredible, original, and exciting (good heavens... I can't believe I said that) array of vinaigrettes. We have picked our favorite, which is a pomegranate vinaigrette that is so delicious you could practically drink it straight from the bottle (but not recommended that you do that). They let you sample their products and you will find something that you enjoy. We've even given Sepay Grove products as Christmas gifts, which is a first for us. I would just admonish visitors that they will talk your ear off if you let them. Go in prepared to say "I don't have a lot of time and I don't mean to be impolite, but if you want me to shop I need to do that right now", unless you want to hear what they have to say, in which case go for it. read more

Very rude people. My family and I walked in and looked around. Someone was lecturing another customer about oils and every time we glanced over, he said "I'll be with you in a minute" in a tone of voice that said we were bothering him. I guess he didn't want us to listen in? One would expect just the opposite. The woman at the counter asked where I was from. When I said I was was local she replied, "And it took you seven years to get here?" We just left. Funny thing is, I'm a major foodie and a prize-winning cook. I wanted to check out their wares. However, this rudeness had already left a bad taste in my mouth, so it was no use. Maybe they were having a very bad day or had just suffered a personal trauma. If so, I won't criticize their behavior. But if this is how they act all the time, then I warn potential visitors that these people are coarse. read more

This place has made me hope that I can find more wonderful places simply by driving down avenues in industrial neighborhoods surrounded by cowfields. Besides, why eat trans-fat loaded Jelly Belly's when you can take your fat in the good ol' fashioned way- that is, as a hunk of baguette saturated in extra-virgin goodness? The receiver of this rosemary-infused communion wafer was none other than myself, and the administrator- a woman with the imperious attitude of a bartender, the knowledge of a scholar, and the psychology of... Metaphors aside, this place is kind of off the beaten path, geographically and in terms of what they do. You can buy supposedly artisan olive oil at just about any grocery store nearby, given that the surrounding area is known for its agriculture. For that matter, Napa and Sonoma tend to get all of the attention as prime real estate for harvest-culture; anything that grows from that soil tends to grow blessed, be they wine grapes or otherwise. Solano County, on the other hand, is the often-neglected sibling in a rivalry of little contest. And if the tourists are out looking, they are invariably looking for wine. Sepay Groves does not do wine. They do olive oil, and they do it well- mainly by educating you first on what to look for, both on the shelf and off. They do it through taste and maybe even a little bit of playful bullying in the process (it's probably warranted, though, because most people, including myself, know very little about olive oil to begin with). The woman and her husband know their stuff, and will happily share their knowledge with you if you ask. Above all, their store features a great selection that I had to avoid taking home after tasting most of it. If the olive oil doesn't interest you, they also offer tastings of vinegar as well. Ever had a cherry balsamic? Blackberry? The feel of my mouth watering was actually my palate crying for joy. Like I said, it's stores like this that are dangerous- if you ever see me wandering down a random industrial boulevard in the middle of nowhere, you now know why. read more

Found this olive oil and balsamic vinegar shop in an office building via a sign posted on the road we took to get to the highway from the Jelly Belly Factory. A great find! Wide range of local vinegars and oils offered. I appreciated the tasting of a wide range of offerings accompanied by tiny crusts of bread (even with my somewhat refined palette drinking the stuff straight up can be harsh, especially the oils). Everything I tasted was good. The lady giving the tasting was very knowledgeable though was pushing her olive oil authenticity and other food safety and advocacy issues. Interesting. I tried this place twice and both experiences failed to meet my expectations. First, the oil is not high quality. I would love for an independent professional review of this oil by some accredited group just to verify I'm not crazy. This stuff is no good. Some of the tastings where just plain rancid, while others lacked flavor and clarity. The proprietor had a way of making me feel not only uncomfortable but unwelcome. I felt as if she was selling snake oil. My skin felt tingly as I walked out, as if someone was trying to steal from me since the product couldn't sell itself. I know this sounds harsh but like I said I've been a couple times and both times walked out with the same feeling. There are some amazing places to get high quality, great tasting olive oils in California and this simply isn't one of them. read more

Sepay Groves has the best Olive Oil hands down and the tasting is a really wonderful experience! We have been to Sepay Groves several times because of their selection of olive oils and the friendliness & knowledge of the owners (husband and wife team). They only sell fresh olive oil and have tastings of about 10-12 oils, each with a numbering system. The oils are noted with their polyphenol count: the higher the number = better for you = more intense flavor). Really cool. Although they have oils from around the world, our favorite oil is the "Super Tuscan" which is one of the higher polyphenol counts, so it has a rich intense grassy flavor...and the best part is that it comes from a locally-sourced olive tree grove about 2 miles away up in Suisun Valley. Yay! They have a passion about their oils and it shows - questions are encouraged. We love all of the stats & studies on the health benefits of olive oil so not only is it fun to taste the different oils, it's a great educational experience. read more

Tasting back and forth, interesting conversation with husband-and-wife subject matter experts and nice ambience give this place a 5. I visited the store in Benicia, and I've always known on a pedestrian level the health benefits of olive oil. However, the owners gave me a much more in-depth explanation of exactly why. The truth has a certain ring to it as my father used to say, and I was pretty quickly convinced to take the health benefits of high quality olive oil much more seriously. Naturally, different olive oils are wonderful with your food, but I really walked away thinking much more about my future health, and how I can take a step in the right direction with better olive oil. Preventative medicine is just not emphasized enough, and if you wonder why people in the Mediterranean have a way lower cancer rate, I don't think it's hard to figure out why ... more good olive oil please! This was my first time doing this, and I must say, I was a bit skeptical when we first arrived because the business is, at this time, in a temporary location, so it was a small space and just not what I expected. I really wanted to like this place. Really. I have visited twice, and I have purchased 5 items here (olive oils and balsamics)- the products themselves were fantastic. I will NEVER be returning... here's why: During both visits, I dealt with the older female owner. She comes across rude, abrasive and harsh. During the first visit, I gave her the benefit of the doubt and figured she was having a bad day. The second visit was no better. She began explaining why "Walmart people" don't shop in her store and went on to make more judgmental statements. Needless to say, we quickly left and did not purchase anything. I'll start my review by saying their signs worked on our way out of our trip to the Jelly Belly factory. We were curious more than anything so stopped in to taste a few things. The proprietors were quite friendly and seemed to be knowledgeable enough about oils. Many posters on the wall about olive oil facts, how many oils at the common supermarkets are impure and cut with other oils and are often a year older or more (at which point the nutritional quality degrades). The tastes of most of their products was amazing, and I especially loved the Suisun Tuscan Valley oil, and can't wait to use it as a steak marinade for some summer grilling! Now for the reason I have to dock a star. The problem is in the giving of too much information while glossing over the actual facts of their EVOO (extra version olive oil) benefits. They make quite the effort to tout their numerical polyphenol scale rating for oils, with higher numbers apparently meaning it is "better for you." I'm always EXTREMELY wary of such claims, and I was correct, upon further research, in that I can find no scientific or FDA-approved evidence that there are any health benefits to polyphenols whatever. They also put up a chart where the proprietor did an experiment on his blood glucose levels over time while taking a couple of tablespoons of oil a day, and the results did indicate lower blood glucose levels. However, of course, this is just one person...you need a much larger sample group to make any such experimental evidence have real meaning. And upon further questioning of both proprietors, it became quite apparent that the increased EVOO intake was but one aspect of their healther-than-normal lifestyle. They also told me that they play tennis often (she is the oldest one in her group), never eat out, rarely if ever indulge in sweets, and get fresh foods regularly. So this makes their oils no different from any other homeopathic remedy out on the market...in other words, it only works "in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise," with no real evidence that the oil itself makes any difference. So take everything they tell you about it being "healthy" with a grain of salt, and don't fall into the common "oh it's SO good for you!" trap and buy the less tasty oils thinking you'll get healthier by taking them if you don't also eat more veggies and exercise several times a week or more. They would be better off, in my opinion, to tout the healthful benefits of using it for cooking and emphasizing that the oil is a much better alternative than any partially hydrogenated or trans fat oil, which HAS been proven harmful by the FDA. read more

Leaving Jelly Belly we saw the sign for free olive oil tasting. Turning in I was originally frustrated because there were no further directions. After driving around the entire complex and just getting ready to drive out - we notice the sign on the building that had been obscured by the trees. We went in and had very personable and attentive service. While I thought the prices were high, after learning of the differences in Olive Oil and the testing they go through at Sepay, I was interested. Then came the ladies husband who can talk really fast! But he is really downloading knowledge at high speed! I've heard so many 'super' claims about foodstuff's that I am a bit jaded. We got to taste all the varieties of Olive Oil and wound up purchasing some because of health claims about lower blood pressure and acid reflux. I was skeptical, but not anymore. My wife's blood pressure dropped from high to normal after 3 days. Within 3 days a chronic arthritis pain in my hand eased then disappeared! The only changes that we had made were in taking 2 tablespoons of olive oil three times a day. The reflux hasn't seemed too different, but I'm willing to stick with it. The hand pain being gone was a totally unexpected benefit. I would urge you to stop and understand taht you are entering into a store staffed with knowledgeable ADVOCATES for Olive oil. I will shop there again, that is the highest compliment I can give any business. read more

We stopped here after the Jelly Belly factory tour on a whim. The olive oil and vinegar tasting was quite thorough. I think we tasted about ten oils and ten vinegars. The proprietors were in the store and taught us a lot about olive oil. They mainly advised us to steer clear of old oil on store shelves (old is not the same as unexpired) as well as refined oil. They are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. read more

I am so very impressed with this "by chance" visit! My son and I stopped in thanks to their signage near Jelly Belly and what a wonderful find! The woman in the store could not have been more pleasant and welcoming but more importantly, very very knowledgeable! She set everything up and went straight to work in talking with us about the Olive Oil industry, production, quality measures. It was fascinating and educational, but not "too much". My 10 year old was invited to taste too and she even made recommendations that might be appropriate for children! There were a few VERY reasonable rules about my doing the dipping for him -- largely grounded in concerns for cross-contamination, etc -- but she could not have been more warm! We shipped several bottles home and with three days in San Fran ahead of us, the merchandise beat us there! She even generously shared a container of lip ointment upon noticing my son's severely chapped lips...amazingly, they literally healed in 24 hours! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! We found this place some time ago when passing by after enjoying the local candy factory tour. Glad we did, best oils and such we have ever had and now we purchase those no where but here. If we can't make the drive from the bay their web site is quick, or even and email and the oils are on the way. We've been shipping them to family on the east coast who just love it. The owners who run the place, Peggy and her husband, are wonderful! We enjoy when we have the chance to stop by and see them. Using their oils has really helped us too to be more healthy. I work in the food industry, have traveled the world and can tell you this place is a gem of a find. Highly recommend you stop and try it out, free samples of all the different flavors. You've never had olive oil until you've been here (or toured through the right areas of Italy or Greece). The proprietors are incredibly knowledgeable and, if you want, talkative. And the products are the best we have seen anywhere. Amazingly flavorful olive oils (and flavored balsamic - especially the fig, which is like a fine red wine...many layered flavors, but without the alcohol). If you are a foodie, this place is an absolute must - because you will learn a great deal about olive oil...especially flavor issues and which olive oils are particularly healthy (almost all American olive oil has considerably less health benefits....in part because the 3 main varieties that are grown in the US are bland....and it is the peppery finish that indicates the significant presence of polyphenols...which have remarkable health benefits for a range of important health issues, ranging from inflammation - RA runs in my family - to lowering blood sugar levels, which is important for most Americans...judging from what you see whenever you're out in public in this country). Sorry about the horrible run-on sentence, but I just got so damned excited about the coolness of this place's offerings (know-how and products). I can't believe that some young snot (a self-professed olive oil "snob") gave them one star and flamed them - hopefully she will grow out of that once she stops texting all her friends with a description of the experience every time a random thought migrates through the ether..... We were very impressed and bought a bunch of oils, which they will ship home for us at a very reasonable price. We also joined their excellent quarterly olive oil club, just to keep the good eatin' happening. BTW, the other must-do place in Fairfield is the Jelly Belly factory...and the tour of the facility. Weird, but true - it's a blast, and an amazing facility. We came out with a bottle of olive oil, garlic chili flavored dipping oil, and a bottle of their merlot vinegar. My husband and I were leaving the Jelly belly factory and spotted a sign for this place and having just started a diet we are always looking for good olive oils and vinegars to spice up our meals with. This place has an amazing array of flavored vinegars and olive oils. We purchased 9 different vinegars lemon grass, Thai ginger, merlot ,chardonnay, pineapple, tangerine, chocolate, mint and blackberry to name a few of the many choices we also purchased amazing cobrancsa and roasted garlic olive oils and a jar of dill mustard. All local and great quality. The lady behind the counter was helpful and well informed. She even made some suggestions for places to eat when we reached San Francisco which was our destination. All in all a very nice experience. And I love the product can't wait to go back Not as good as the olive press but much more selection. read more

Phenol level in grocery store olive oil: 80 Phenol level in SEPAY's olive oil: 454 (Phenols provide the antioxidant value of olive oil.) So if you're there for the oil, it's a no-brainer. THE OWNERS: That said, the two owners are no-bullsh*t people -- they have to be, to hold such high standards in an industry that doesn't. So don't go to their tasting room expectng sweet Mom and Dad. They are very friendly, and will happily take time to talk about oil, health, extraction process, and any question you have. BUT, the customer is *not* always right, and they have no time for know-it-alls, spies (yes they get MANY), and rude people, who they will dispatch with vehemence and without hesitation. I suspect that is why there are a few one-star ratings on here. ABOUT TASTING AND SELECTING: Since Sepay oils are stronger than grocery store, they TASTE stronger, in particular more "grassy" with a mild after-burn in the throat. Some people may not like the potent stuff. If so, go for the flavored oils (like Garlic and Herbs), as they are milder but still top quality. HISTORY (as I understand it): SePaY is literally a mom-and-pop outfit, but Mom and Pop know their sh*t. They used to work in the olive oil production field, and they saw the terrible things that were standard practice, from chemicals used to extract the oil, to mixing old stale oil with new. Rebels that they are, they started SePaY, and they ONLY sell the top stuff, not measured by someone's claim but by using reliable producers and testing every batch to assure high "biphenols", the things that make Olive oil so good fo you. Sepay is not high-tech, and their competitors (who are), steal their research, plagerize their web-text, and spy on their tasting room. They are upholding a tiny bastion of quality for us consumers, in an industry that doesn't like them, so please be understanding...
