This is one of the better Sephora's I have been to in California. They always seem to have those essential and hot items that are sold out in all other locations. Whenever I have gone, I notice they have a good amount of items like Becca's Champagne Pop highlighter as well as KVD's Lolita liquid lipsticks that are nowhere to be seen in most other Sephora stores and online. Another big highlight of this store is that their employees are extremely helpful in making sure that you are able to find the things that you need or to make suggestions about better products that you can get in the same category that you're looking for. Both their male and female associates and artists are fantastic in helping customers find items in the cosmetics, hair, skin, and even men's skincare sections. The fact that they are so knowledgeable is a big plus because it's easy to get lost in a store with so many different brands, items, and shades. My main complaint about this store is that some of the brands are scattered in a seemingly unorganized way. Most Sephora stores, for example, have makeup brands in one corner, hair in another corner, skin in yet another corner, and so on. This store is similar but some of the brands are all the way in one side of the store and the others are on the total other side. Also, usually the Sephora exclusive brands are usually put in close proximity to one another but this store isn't like that. Another issue is that since this is one of the only Sephora stores in OC (not counting the other one in the same mall), it gets super crowded; yet the the store space doesn't seem to have been designed for such lines and crowds, leading to some slight claustrophobia. I'm only giving five stars to the super sweet and extremely helpful sales person that helped me yesterday. There's a big difference in my skin color wintertime versus summertime so I was browsing around in the Make Up Forever section. Andrea took the time to really match the foundation exactly to my coloring. Since she took her time in helping me, it so happened that we realized that my face is actually two shades. She explained that itmeans I have natural contouring which explains why I always have the crappiest time trying to match a foundation shade. Basically my forehead, jawline, and chin are a darker color while my cheeks are significantly lighter so to have only one shade of foundation on looks off. No one's ever noticed that about my skin or they just didn't bother telling me. The best part was that even though she took her time in helping me out, she was still efficient and I was in and out in less than fifteen minutes. This is by far the worst Sephora I've ever been to - and I've done my share of makeup shopping in several cities/counties/states. For a store at such a large mall, you'd expect their selection to be great - but somehow, inventory seems low to nonexistent more often than I'd prefer. I sometimes end up with the last item of what I was searching for - usually the box is crushed and torn with a missing color label or something, but the sales associates always insist that the product itself is fine. Speaking of whom, Sephora seems to consistently hire the least helpful sales associates they possibly can, with minimal knowledge of the products - but they can read. Case in point, I once asked about a certain product, and the girl's response was to look at the product display, and read off of it word for word. So much for expertise. Another time, I was inquiring about the differences between two brands of the same product, and the response I got was "it's just preference". Clearly a very helpful response to assist me in my decision. After far too long of enduring this, I decided to just buy all my makeup at department store counters, or Sephora's online store - cause hey, the beauty reviews on the website are exponentially more helpful than the sales associates, who I've since deemed as purely ornamental. As an added bonus, ordering online tends to get you a better bonus/sample selection than you'd get in store. read more

This is a total bummer because I love Sephora, but like...this store just can't seem to get it together. The second to last time I was here, they were out of like EVERYTHING related to lipstick. Literally every specific lipstick I was looking for was out of stock. But...no big deal, it's annoying but it happens. This last time I went in, totally sucked! I bought a few things including a NARS Cruella lipstick and waited in a pretty long line to purchase everything. The girl who was helping me was not very nice at all, barely looked at me, helped a customer on the phone while I was standing in front of her and was just in a seemingly huge rush. So I get back to my car and was stoked to put on my new Cruella lips and THERE WAS NO LIPSTICK IN THE BOX! Thank God I was only in my car. Finally she let me trade for a new one and never even bothered to apologize. So...I guess I'll just avoid this Sephora from now on. I am literally overwhelmed with tears of joy right now. My experience with a manager named Arianna is probably one of if not THE best customer service experiences I have ever had. After this crazy hunt down for the elusive and exclusive Kat Von D Lolita lipstick I found the last two at her location! I had a straightforward but fierce mini lip makeover with Miguel and wow he sold me! Not just on Lolita (because she sells herself!) but man did he work his upsell with that YSL eclait touché lol Don't sweat babe I'm not even mad at cha! I would usually feel guilty spending that much especially when all I came in for was one lipstick. But bae wanted to take care of me :) so $105 later we left for lunch. Hours later I found my car broken into and my beloved make up bag went missing... Along with all the new purchases as well! :( Sounds like an annoying 1st world problem but you know what they say is true, losing all your make up is worse than a break up! (Break up to makeup baby!) I'm not sure what I cried harder for: the fact that I was violated, the fact that I was just laid off so the insurance deductible is out of the question, or was it the fact that Lolita is sold out nationwide and I didn't even!!! She took the time to actually give a shit. She asked basic but crucial questions like: what's your name? Your email acct if you are a vib (to further investigate my purchases) and the like. Very common sense and no nonsense, like a boss lady should be. She didn't have to take the time. She could of just told me what virtually all the other stores told me "sorry it's not our liability, if u paid with debit with a receipt they can get cash back, whether the card is present or not, yada yada" I mean really tell me something I don't know ya know? But not SCP and Ari. At this point she already superseded my expectation of Sephora as a company, as an entity. But does the unbelievable.. She tells me to come in before her shift is over. After I hung up with her I'm thinking maybe she wants to see the police report, maybe I have to put down a statement, possibly some samples?!? I went in and OMG this girl! She saved the very last Lolita. For me! And gifted it to me. It's not a big deal to most. But to me it's a world of a difference. Just the compassion, taking the time out of their busy weekend day... They all didn't have to care and share their personal strifes or words of encouragement but they did. And to give me something to smile about today... As a customer for Macy's, Bloomingdales and M.A.C for over 15 years and have satisfaction every single time, I just said lets try Sephora. The first at the Beverly Hills and I got an average service. The second time at South Coast Plaza and I should say I had the worst shopping experience ever in whole my life!!! After purchasing a foundation, on my way exiting the store I saw colorful shadows and thought to try some on and might purchase a different set of colors. After explaining that I want to have a change and a set of combination colors for "outer corner design", The artist left and called someone else who she said is more experienced. I explained again what I was looking for. I showed a green color that I liked and said a combination of colors for "Outer corner" explained five times.... she said I can only put a mini make up on you otherwise you need to make an appointment and pay for a full eye make $45 to $50. I said look I don't want a complete make up and again explained my purpose and said you might have had customers coming here for the purpose of going to a party, but as you see my hair is so messy I just need to try this brand.... Finally she started her work and put light green on the outer corner of my eye!! I said this is very light, she argued that their is no right or wrong thing you can apply any color anywhere you like!!! As I had explained five times...I said please call another artist, I think I can't communicate well enough with you. She left and after a few minutes a very aggressive woman with black shirt and a manly attitude came and start yelling at me that I need to leave the store immediately because I have been very rude to 4 cast members, used words and I need to be removed from the store right now otherwise she will call the security!! YELLING!! I asked what word I used??? what did I do??? I was so shocked.... so shocked, couldn't believe what I was facing!!! They refused to give her name or any manager to me. I asked can I talk to a manager, she left and called the security immediately without addressing my request!! The store was full of people and everybody was looking at me, wondering what I did I do....!!! I left the store and called the corporate office immediately, the customer service rep start apologizing after hearing me out. I said I need this lady come out and apologize. I hold the phone for about 20 minutes or more she got back to me and said I suggest that you follow up with the store director as she is not coming out to apologize!! read more

Sephora is great because you can try out all different brands and products without a salesperson trying to sell you everything under the sun, like at department store makeup counters. The bad thing is that if you actually need help, you might not be able to find anyone available to assist you. That's what happened to me on Friday afternoon. I probably got there between 4:30 and 5:00, and the store was mobbed! There was a line twisting around to checkout. It went pretty fast though. They have a new free "Beauty Insider" program where you get a card that allows you to purchase items before the general public. I was also given a Bliss body butter deluxe sample since my birthday had recently passed. Bonus! The greatest thing about Sephora has to be their liberal return policy. Just save your receipt, and if you're not satisfied with your purchase, you can return it within 60 days for a refund or exchange! read more

I needed to purchase a few make up items and walked into Sephora at the South Coast Plaza. The sales associate who helped me (Kristina L.) was extremely helpful and attentive. She took the time to look for the colors I described to her and made some suggestions. Since the store wasn't very busy when I walked in Kristina offered to give me a mini make up session, which I loved. She also introduced me to the Sephora Insider Points program and gave me some free samples. Kristina made my visit to Sephora a positive and pleasant experience. Most of the sales associates I encountered were friendly and also offered assistance. I felt the customer service at this particular store was exceptional. The wait time was minimal and there were no long lines. There are a couple of local Sephora stores in my area, but based on my experience with Kristina I will return to this store. My makeup hero is Steven...you'll know who he is becuz he's one of their FULL TIME Artists there everyday. He recently transferred from another store so I'm so glad SCP got him. I came in to ask about some products I was recommended by some of their other artists there. I haven't been quite happy with the results and don't do exchanges/returns...just figured, if I've opened it don't return it. Well, I was looking to get color matched on foundation and some new blush colors for the New Year. I took a list of the products and color/numbers to show him and he knew right away the colors I was matched the last few times were wrong...totally wrong for my skin tone and type. Immediately he asked me to sit down for him to show me the difference of the stuff I had vs. what he knew would be better for me. WOW...the results were eye opening. I've been wearing the wrong colors all this time. Not that you can tell with the human eye but the difference was how it looked in the end. My complexion seemed more even, smooth and flawless. The wrong colors made me look a bit dark and totally uneven. I ended up spending about 1 hour with Steven and we got me a whole makeup MAKEOVER! I ended buying so many products that catered to my skin type/coloring and concerns. I will be coming back to Steven for all my needs. He is really so knowledgeable and resourceful too. This location's only saving grace is the unbelievably nice staff that works here. Everyone is super helpful, especially if you look lost! Otherwise, I heavily dislike this store. I constantly feel claustrophobic because there are products everywhere! This is Sephora; of course that's to be expected. But there's just so many customers roaming in and out of the store, and there's barely any walking space between you, the products, and other customers. Let me start off by saying I am in no way a make-up person. I only wear make-up once a week at the most, only if I'm going out or to an event. The extent of my traditional make-up is eyeliner, mascara and sometimes bronzer. I also never know exactly what I'm doing when applying this stuff to my face. For that reason, I asked the experts at Sephora for some help with deciding on new eyeliner and mascara. I've recently read an internet article that said 1) throw out your mascara after 3 months to avoid bacteria build up [good thing I've been using mine for a year... oops] and 2) if you hardly wear mascara, buy travel-sized tubes instead to save money since you'll probably not use an entire regular sized tube in three months [incredibly correct in my case]. I explained this to one of the staff at the South Coast Plaza Sephora store, and then asked which mascara she most recommends. Her response: "this one." She points to one of the mascaras and then walks away. I wasn't able to just say "okay, thanks!" and go buy the product, I wanted to know WHY this was the best. Then I wanted to know why she was so short and rude about it. She just went back to standing and cleaning a hand-held mirror, not helping any other customers or doing anything that seems incredibly time consuming. I felt extremely put off, and irritated that I couldn't even get one full sentence out of this employee. In my mind, it's their job to help us and direct us to the best products. I would understand if she was busy, but her attitude and shortness was not excused by any apparent or valid reason. 0 stars for her! I then approached another employee, Sarah, who was SO helpful. I again explained the fact that I wanted to buy travel size (and why), as well as what eyeliner I currently use and why I don't feel it's best for me. She talked me through multiple options and showed me several products and how they each work. I couldn't have been happier with her customer service. I didn't mention the rude woman who helped me earlier, so it made me even more delighted to see that she wasn't trying to be over-friendly just to fix my impression. She was genuinely helpful and polite. I ended up buying two products that Sarah helped me find and hopefully next time I shop there (in like... a year) she'll be able to help me again! 5 star service for Sarah. :) Only reason I'm giving this place four stars instead of one is because I was helped by Sarah in the end, who changed my perspective. This is how Sephora is supposed to feel with it's Top Shelf quality of brands, inside one of the classiest malls in Orange County, not inside a JC Penny store, thank you very much. I always find an abundance of knowledgeable staff clean in their grooming and dress and ready to help me. When it turned out that day that they were out of the BareMinerals finishing powder I preferred they let me know they would have it back in within a few days, but I had an event that evening I needed it for. Rather than lean back on their heels, they sent me to the BareMinerals store located there in the Mall, knowing I would return to shop @ this quality Sephora again and again. And I do. I went to this location to see if I could get another YSL touché eclat all in one glow concealer. Sephora didn't seem to carry it and the woman working there told me YSL was discontinuing the line. So I bought a different product. I got home and searched online and found the YSL I wanted at a department store. That's really not what bothered me though. It's really the in store experience of being hounded by their employees. I was in a hurry to get to an appointment so I was in the store for maybe 10 minutes. Within that time probably 5 employees came up to me and my mom and one practically shoved a basket at us. We had 3 small items. Not hard to carry. Another one circled around us while I used testers to color match since I needed to get a different product and not my YSL. I only go to Sephora maybe once every 2-3 years because the in store experience is so odd. I'll stick to department stores and online retailers in the future. Wouldn't recommend. read more

This location is my go-to for Sephora, but it has a bad reputation for customer service (being that they're all about teaching beauty) amongst everyone I know. I'm actually a pretty easy shopper, quiet, doesn't want help, but I'll ask when I have a question and Tess was there to answer all my questions and even more. She was quick, efficient, super informative, and genuine. I interacted with one other associate before Tess and the experience was so different, unappreciated, and "don't ask me anything I just need to fill this shelf with product" attitude.. which is fine with me, so I left her and found Tess. I can go on and in depth about my experience but I really just wanted to give a shout out to Tess, you're amazing. Dre and Luis are expert level makeup artists. And they are both AMAZING!! They know every little thing there is to know about makeup and other products. I always get compliments when they do my makeup. I have always suffered from acne, and thru all these years Dre has been helping me. Sarah is also the sweetest ever. She is always happy to help and also knows her makeup application. As I walk in with sister- I am greeted by someone who seems honestly happy to help me. I decline, because the layout makes it easy to navigate the store. Everywhere I looked the shelfs were well stocked with a clean product for customers to sample. The shelves were packed with a great favorite of product and everything I need, thus making my trip so short. The wonderful young lady checking me out, urged me to check out other items that would compliment my purchase. What a great sales lady! So, very tempting - but I will be back. My second home! This place is every Make-Up Junkie's heaven! The ladies here are always very helpful. Especially "America". She's a sweetheart. It's very well-organized and can find all of my make-up, skin care, hair care, fragrance and beauty needs here. And I love that they give you free samples to try before you buy it. The gals here seem to go out of their way to help customers. However, on a few occasions, I have noticed if I dress down, and I'm not wearing my professional business attire, they don't seem to be as helpful and I usually have to wait awhile until someone approaches me or asks me if I need any help. And it shouldn't be this way. NEVER JUDGE A CUSTOMER BY WHAT THEY'RE WEARING. I have worked in sales for 20 years, and sometimes the people with the most money, tend to dress down and be more casual. So you never know. For this reason I took away one star. But overall, I do love this place and will continue shopping here since it's so close to home. read more

The girls (and men) here are so helpful! I'm not really into wearing much makeup and everyone I've ever worked with has always done a really good job with finding me types of brow pencils that are easy for me to use, lipsticks that last a long time (Kat Von D), and are always open to giving me mini tutorials whenever I ask. One thing that upset me was that when I asked for a solid, long lasting, lipstick a girl suggested Kat Von D. I told her that I had been using the Josie Moran lip stain that another girl had suggested me and she replied "oh god I would never use that." So I was kind of annoyed that the previous girl I worked with suggested me such a shit lip stain. What makes up for it is their return policy. I had the lip stain in my bag and they looked it up on my sephora account and returned it for me, full price! I love Sephora! I didn't discover how wonderful this place was until last year when I went over their return policy. Try ANYTHING and if you don't like it, return it in 60 days! I was really surprised, most places won't even exchange used cosmetics/skin care. Sephora really cares and wants to make sure you love what you buy from them! There is a huge huge huge selection of things, there's something for everyone here. As for the salespeople, I don't even bother asking them for their opinions. The first time I went, I talked to about 5 or 6 different people, and they all told me completely different things. My skin is dry, my skin is oily, I need exfoliation, no that's too much exfoliation for you. What is it?! Whatever. They're still really nice and helpful. Really helpful staff! I was looking primarily just for the Brow Dip by Anastasia & initially nobody was helping me, but I just stopped somebody and asked to help. Joshua helped me pick out a colour and set me up with a complimenting brush. While I was there I decided to shop for my Halloween costume as well, which the staff was more than helpful with. I came here looking for a gift for my housemate and I wasn't sure what to look for. Sarah was super helpful and sweet; and I really enjoyed my conversation with her. Last year I came here with a $100 gift card to buy make-up for a cause called "Cinderella For a Day" where local high school girls were taken and taught proper etiquette, and had a full on workshop on applying for college and searching for success, and at the end, each girl was taken to go shopping, with a personal shopper, for a prom dress, shoes, purses, jewelry and make-up, all provided by volunteers and donations. I was having trouble finding stuff, I mean, there was great stuff, it was just I didn't want to walk out with only 4 things, I wanted to get the most for my money... After searching around, one of the associates came to me and asked me if I needed any help. I told her my situation, and she was so touched that she became my personal shopper, and for an hour she helped me pick and choose colors and make-up that would be great, and at great prices, and gave me advice on what will last longest, and was just absolutely fabulous. And then she went to talk to other associates, and they joined in and helped find make-up and accessories that would be great for a decent price. They even helped me get a couple discounts, and collect some free items on top of that. I couldn't believe how amazing the customer service was. They were not only well informed on what was going on in their store, but also each and every product that they recommended, and when I asked about one they didn't have experience with, they were able to find someone who knew something about the line. Needless to say, I dropped about $50 more of my own, but I walked out with so much make up and knew that the faces on the girls would not only be worth what I spent, but amazing to know that we were able to put smiles on more than just 4 or 5 faces. Took my grandmother here on her 90th birthday to get her makeup done for her party. Victoria and Olive did an amazing job on our make up and made us feel wonderful. I can't thank them enough for making the day even better. I was also able to pick up a few things and had a very speedy check out with Olive while I had my makeup done. So when I wear makeup, I wear consider my makeup style: dragqueen chic. So you would think Sephora would be my mecca, however, it's like the costco of makeup, sure it has selection but it might as well be a 20 gallon jug of olives. It is just a hot mess. There is never enough sales people to help the mass of people on the floor. I feel like I am at a makeup swap meet, and I am contracting Herpes Simplex I in the air. Ok, with all those horrific things said, I do frequent Sephora, because it is makeup Costco, and I know makeup. I get and get out.
