After we had eaten about half. So many good choices!

I wish I had n no. We were so greedy that we ended up eating about half of what we had bought before I even thought to take a picture. LOL But this wonderful little bakery has beautiful, tasty, reasonably-priced treats. Value and quality are excellent. The service was... okay. The server seemed a little impatient while we were enjoying the breadth of their offerings. Hopefully, we made it worth her while, buying almost $20 worth of goodies. We parked for free in the neighborhood. Bottom line: We will be back over and over.

Probably my favourite aspect of the Kits area is its diverse, unique and local stores...whether it be coffee shops, delis, bakeries..so on and so forth. I came upon Serano Bakery and as I opened the door, the incredible smell of freshly baked sweets and breads literally dragged me inside and closed the door behind me. My weakness is bread, so I was now held hostage by this bakery (not literally, they were actually really nice people)....the delicious smell, the colours and the fully stocked windows of all sorts of Mediterranean deserts and pastries had me locked in. I decided to try three of their cream-based items.....a Black forest, an Amigdalou and the Kasitina. So first off, the deserts were incredibly fresh....I mean like ...right out of the oven, and this next point is completely based on personal taste. I like my cake to taste like....well...cake. The density, substance and compact texture of the fabric of cake is my favourite thing about eating cake. Actually, the Black forest is one of my top favourite cakes, but with theirs, it was too light for me....too airy. I tasted mostly whip cream and the cream was unsweetened. I couldn't taste the chocolate, the cherry filling, the kirsch or the cocoa. Even though it was very fresh, every single bite just tasted like a bite of unsweetened whip cream. It was the same with the other two pieces I ordered. They all tasted the same...an overwhelming uniform taste of cream, and not a carefully baked, uniquely flavoured and individualized pastry piece like I had hoped. If you like your sweets very very light and love whip cream...then this is the place for you. So, what started off as exciting ended in a bit of a disappointment. For me.

Stumbled upon this little gem last week. It takes me back to the time when good homemade baked goods were only sold in a bakery and not a big box stores. The smell in this bakery is heavenly, heavenly! They sell cake slices, a variety of cookies, bun, Greek pastries, drinks and much more. The young lady who helped us was very sweet and offered many suggestions and was able to answer all our questions. You don't find many bakeries like this anymore. They've been around for I think 30 years. The prices are fair. Just to let you know that there is no seating here, it's strictly a buy and go establishment.

They had a stall set up for Greek Day and I was craving spanakopita/spinach pie so that's what I got! It was hot and fresh. Like so hot they had to warn me about it and I couldn't eat it for a while. The outside was very flaky and there was tons of filling inside! I'll keep them in mind if I ever need any Greek pastries. Wish I got some baklava too!

Remind me of pastry shops in Greece. Everything is very reasonably priced and delicious!

One of the classics, Greek area for a long time. Pastries always fresh, and not too sweet. Think I had something like a baklava. Cozy shop.

Baklava cravings hit me once in a while. Those light crispy layers of phyllo, soaked in honey, with bits of crunchy pistachio in between. It's always a special treat. First discovered this cute bakery while shopping near the area two summers ago. The colorful meringues in the window lured me in. Inside, they had many other treats-butter cookies, bread, baklava, galaktoboureko, kataifi (shredded phyllo dough with honey and nuts), rizogalo (Greek rice pudding),bugatsa, almond, vanilla, anise seed biscotti, lots and lots of sweet treats. They have all different colors and flavours of meringues-lemon, lime, strawberry, raspberry, lime... I usually pick up a baklava or two, along with some cookies, bring it home, and savour it with Chai tea. I love this cute bakery, for its selection, and of course, fresh baklava!!

Oh, Serano: you and your window display of hot and delicious spanikopita lure me like a fish on a reel. Warm, flaky, buttery pastry; cheesy filling; and spinach to give it all a 'healthy' stamp. For just $3 you can partake in these perfect pastries. I recently made the mistake of eating a spinach pie at Safeway: nuked to a state of microwave burn and tasteless. My dear Serano, I'll never do that again. I spend quite a bit of time at the Kitsilano library, or the Broadway Blenz and Serano is on my walking route there. Every time I walk past I have to talk myself out of purchasing a spinach pie--because they're just sitting there waiting for me. The only negative (and I think it was here I had them) are the flavored meringues. Overly sweet and as fake-tasting as the color, I don't recommend them for kids or anyone else. Even my boyfriend, who prides himself on eating my leftovers, wouldn't touch the highlighter-color lemon specimen I bought, bit, and didn't like. Sounds like just one more reason to stick with the pastries.

We got a nice assortment of sweet pastries to take home. They were not overly sweet so that you could taste the walnuts, etc. that were embedded in between luscious layers of phyllo. They were also soft enough that they were easy to cut through on the plate while feeling delicate in the mouth. A delightful bakery from which to source well-made desserts without severely depleting your wallet.

I was meeting a friend here yesterday who's visiting from California, and when deciding on a meeting place, we realized a bunch of the Gastown coffee roaster places were closed on Sunday, so I mentioned Breka , knowing it was opened 24/7. (LOVE this!). Plus, this site is close to Waterfront Station, and my friend had a busy day planned, taking the Seabus to N.Van and doing a lot of sightseeing. So this Breka was perfect. I was there early at 10 am-ish, and from the outset, I was impressed: exposed brick wall, long counter and display case, fully stocked with the most beautiful pastries and tarts and cakes, and lovely looking sandwiches, too....Just lovely. I ordered a tea from the guy taking the orders. At the check-out, the woman working the cashier was the most unfriendly, aloof person I have ever encountered at a Breka. She was downright dour. Never looked up, never smiled, said I owed X for the tea I ordered, gave me a receipt and said I was "number 3", no "thank you" (despite my saying thanks!), nothing. She looked really unhappy and bothered to be there. (I sat at a nearby table, waiting for my number to be called. I saw her interactions with all the people behind me - and there were quite a few, as it got suddenly busy in the cafe. She was cold and unfriendly to everyone in line as she rang them all up. These are mostly tourists! Why have a dour, borderline-hostile woman at the check-out counter of a busy cafe in a touristy part of our city? I just don't get it). Anyhow, I waited 10 minutes to hear my number called, but I never heard it. I walked up to the take-out area and there was my tea, on a receipt that said "number 3". Did they call out my number? I honestly don't know. I was seated at a table a few feet from the area and listening for my number and I didn't hear it called. I was not impressed with this set-up. Not at all. My friend arrived and got a chocolate concoction which looked amazing, and he loved it, so there's that. I still love Brekas but I probably won't return to this site. Between the cold experience at the cash and the prolonged waiting for my order (a cup of tea!), and not being sure if my order number was ever called, it just all left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

The cake is definitely prettier than the other fresh mango cakes on the market, has a lot more mangos that are perfectly ripe and sweet, there is less wipped cream, and the sponge cake is softer. The family agreed that Gary's has the best fresh mango cake but at $69 for a 6 inch cake, versus $43 for a 6 inch mango cake from Saint Germaine, a cake from Gary's is definitely a treat and for special occasions. Is Gary's worth the premium price? I think so but not everyone in my family agreed. One thing to note: Gary's do offer cake in a jar that's $8.50 each.
