I'm bummed that I have to write this review. I wanted to pamper myself. They took me without an appointment. Hair dresser was Christine, Master Stylist. I told her I am tender headed. But, she did not adjust her heavy handed approach. She has long pointed false nails. My scalp is still sore 1 day later. She kept accusing me of being unapproachable because I was quiet. Then kept saying over and over again that I was a hairdresser also. Yelling across the shop that I was a stylist. ALL I wanted was a moment of pampering. I WAS DISAPPOINTED. Yes, I tipped 20% because I respect the trade. Her daughter, a hairstylist sits in front of her. She watched TV on her phone while doing a young lady's head with a hot flat iron in hand. The other hairdresser who also had a client was scrolling through her phone the entire time. She made her client wait for long periods of time (over 20-30 minutes) while she crocheted her client's hair. 2 student hairstylist's were sitting around without instructional guidance. When the whole purpose is for them to continue learning with a hands on approach and added direction away from school campus. Again, I am deeply saddened and disappointed that I had to write this review. Please do better. read more

I have been to Serene Hair Design 4 times. I was really hoping to make this my regular salon instead of having to drive to the city. However, the scheduling here is horrible. I spent three hours here for a simple wash, blow dry and press each time! My last and final appointment was two weeks ago. I scheduled a Friday appointment thinking it wouldn't be as busy. My appointment was at 3:00pm. I left at 6:30pm. I'd rather spend more money and drive to Chicago and go to Spring's Place then waste my whole afternoon. I gave three stars because I liked my hair buts it's not worth my time. read more

Beware or this place. I just recently got my hair braided by one of the "stylist " by the name of B. I came in for stitch feed in braids and didn't even get that. I asked her where the middle braids were and all the missing braids and she stated she "forgot ". It was a red flag for me when she was done in an hour. I asked if she could redo them and she stated she had a client coming in and for me to come back. Why am I coming back off a mistake YOU made. Then proceeded to take $20 off $120 when the style I received looks like cornrows so it should really be $30. Then I texted her and she said I was sleeping while getting my hair done. What does that have to do with lousy and mediocre work? I then went home and took it out the bun and the majority of the braids weren't even braided. This is why I usually get my hair done in Chicago and not bolingbrook because of the unprofessional and rude people. I have NEVER encountered anything like this before. I wish I could give 0 stars. B needs to be ashamed of herself for taking my money when she is fully aware she did not work for it! read more

Very pleased with this salon. I contacted them with several questions before making an appointment and they were very paitent answering them. I scheduled an appointment with LeAndrea for my daughter, who has very long, thick hair. She is super sensitive to any pulling or tugging on her hair, and LeAndrea was so gentle. She was able to comb out HORRIBLE knots from her hair (I thought they would have to cut them out) and without hurting her! Ended up getting a natural conditioning treatment done, recommend by LeAndrea. The treatment was rather pricey, but included cut, style and the de-tangling process. We've dont keratin and other treatments in the past, but this has been the best so far! Her hair has been much more manageable and softer. We will definitely go back. read more

Instead of her apologizing that she forgot she says " your hair is so thin and terrible, I did you a favor. After reading Kim's Review (Thanks BTW) I decided to head here on Saturday....see I was itching for a change! I called on Thursday and was able to make a 9am appt for Saturday (wow.) So I go on Saturday and the original stylist I had was awesome but unfortunately she wasn't familiar with hair cutlery as I changed what I wanted done ( a new cut!) Shari is good with natural hair. I just paid for someone to get their hair done by her, and she hooked them up, I usually go to her to get my hair done, but i recently started the loc process... So I decided to go with a salon that are known for doing locs. I had went with salons that had pictures of their work on yelp, and i did some serious research... But for natural people, I advise people to get there hair done by shari. Most of the staff are really friendly, and the owner is really nice too. Absolutely loved my first experience at Serene! The salon is clean, smells good, and has all the right vibes with the music and conversation. I could tell everyone loved their job! My hair stylist was BeBe and she was AMAZING! She spent a long time educating me on my hair, and was up to date on the newest trends! I'm very particular about my hair, and she listened to all my concerns and handled it with care (that you don't always get at other salons). She is educated, knowledgeable, and passionate. She explained the hair tendencies and chemistry very well so I understood the process and the reason behind her recommendations. This is my very favorite salon! The staff is very courteous, professional, and talented. During your first visit they do an assessment of your hair, which consists of charting your hair type, condition, products used, and what your hair goals are. They then recommend styles, treatments and products that will best suit your needs. They offer a variety of treatments to help you maintain a healthy head of hair including their own exclusive products. This is the only salon that has cared as much about the condition of my hair as they do about styling it. Natural or relaxed, they do it all here. The shop itself is very clean and comfortable with free parking. Appointments can be made online. Children are not allowed unless being styled. This is the worst experience I have ever had at a hair salon. I went to get my hair straightened by Lele (Leandra) towards the end of December. I straighten my hair once or twice a year max to avoid heat damage and I always choose to go to a professional. When I washed my hair after wearing it straight for 5 weeks after the styling I was devastated- the heat damage was severe throughout my entire head. Certain parts of my hair (all throughout) would no longer curl. My curl pattern is gone. It will take years and an educated stylist to fix this. When I called and told them about this a man (who lied and said he was the owner) answered the phone and said heat damage from straightening one time wasn't possible- which is a lie. You can do a simple google search and see that it is VERY much possible if someone puts an ungodly amount of heat to your hair. I truly hope that none of the future clients of this salon experience what I am experiencing. Find a REAL natural salon, not just a place that claims to do natural hair because it is trendy but has stylists who aren't educated. I cannot believe I paid over $200 for my hair to be ruined. The worst part of my experience is the fact that my hair is ruined but a close second was how the sassy phone attendant want to argue with me and DENY that they were responsible without even listening to me. They were the only ones to touch my hair. I honestly am not sure if he does hair. He definitely doesn't know how to speak to clients. read more

I went to this salon per the reviews and per viewing their website. I was HIGHLY disappointed. I called and asked for the best short hair cut stylist, because I know that not everyone can do all styles. Hoping that the person who answered the phone would step outside of themselves if that was not them ,I was not so lucky to find that person to be brave enough to do that. Upon her saying that would be her, we made an appointment for the very next day. Arrived there to find that this salon's atmosphere was just like all the other non professional shops in the area. You have loud talking stylist, looking like they just jumped out of the bed and came in, hair unkeep and not portraying a true stylist at all. Still, I sat there and continued. I showed my stylist the picture of Nicole Parker Kojo, and asked if this could be done, she said yes with no problem..... but why does my hair look like a broken Hallie Berry hair do? Why should one who had enough hair have to add pieces into there hair to get the desired look that they asked for? I wanted to blast her on the spot and ask the stylist who was doing fabulous weaves to help her counter-partner out and help her with my hair.. but I did not, because maybe that was the best that she could do, but as a stylist you should never take on a client that has specifics that you know that you can not perform. One might say well, what did your hair look like before, well, I had shoulder length hair, undamaged. I am not blasting all the stylist there, because as I went through my torture, I did see a few who knew there trade. Kudoos to them. It has taken me a week to just chalk this up to a lesson learned. I called at 10 am and was able to get a 5:15 appointment the same day. I was looking for a stylist for my 8 year old daughter and decided on this placed base on word of mouth and reviews. I talked to the stylist before she started and told her what my concerns where with my daughter hair. I decided to relax, condition and trim her hair. Okay, I want to begin by saying Yelp is my go to place when I need assistance with finding new places for a variety of services. So, I look to Yelp to find a salon near me that does quality sew-in hair extensions. After having many bad sew-ins, I decided to try Serene Hair Designs. I am a 52 year old African American woman with very fine and short hair. Because I have fine hair, it annoys me when stylist install thick bumpy tracks in my hair that are difficult to conceal with my natural hair and feel horrible to the touch. Well, no more! I found BeBe!!! She is the bomb! She listened to all of my concerns and issues that I have with extensions, then she delivered exactly what I wanted. Finally, I won't be taking down my sew-in a week later because of a bad job. I always purchase quality hair that will easily blend with my natural hair that I leave out. BeBe did an excellent job. My tracks are all even nice and thin, not too tight. Even though I didn't mention it, she used hair to lay my tracks, not that cheap itchy yarn!!! "Big Brownie Points" and she didn't even realize it. Also, I want to mention the ambiance of this salon. In a word....Perfect. All of the ladies professional, courteous, and friendly. I loved the old school R&B playing overhead in the background and the shop talk was good as well. Just a relaxing nice place to spend a few hours getting beautiful. The shop is gorgeous. After just reading the review on 8/12/15, I'm guessing I got the wrong person. I was giving the name Chari on face book as a recommendation for crochet hair. I went to her in October. I loved the shop and the atmosphere. Chari was a bit slow and talkative with another co-worker but okay cool. I have been getting crochets for over 10 years. I know how to make it work if it's workable, my stylist moved to Chicago so I was on the hunt for someone closer. Chari did a great job in October so I made another appointment for November. NIGHTMARE! Chari again slow, overbooked. She had to have someone shampoo two of her clients while she was doing my hair all the time still talking. Anyway finally finished. I get home put hair in a ponytail for the weekend as usual. Monday I take my hair down and noticed the pieces were falling out I know that happens a bit so no big deal. Noticed lots of frizz but I have everything to make that work so I thought. I called Monday eve and got an answering machine. I didn't leave a message. Tuesday was a busy day for me so I wasn't able to call. All the time hair is just falling out. I called backed Wednesday Eve left message for her to call me. I did speak with her on Thursday at that time she told me that she had sent me a text asking to contact her on cell. I'm thinking okay cool I like that. I explained to her what was going on. I mentioned that the right side of my head looked totally different from the left and was very thin. She explained to me that she had used a different pattern and knot. We made an appt. for me to come in that Friday at 5:00. She told me to bring 4 packs of hair different brand maybe Outre she said. I had taken Freetress and have mostly used Freetress for 10 years. She said that she would take it down and put it back up using the same braid pattern already in. Okay fine, so Friday I sent her a text repeating what I heard her say and telling her just to make sure that we were on the same page. She text back "yes that's the plan". I didn't want any surprises so I text asking "how much" she never text back so I didn't go. Knowing that she had read the text. So Saturday morning I texted her again saying" Apparently we weren't on the same page. So can you fill in the thin spot on the right side of my head, guessing 10-15 minutes". Never heard back from her. So I went to the beauty supply store to purchase a wig and the lady told me that it looked like she ran out of hair. Nope she sent me home with hair. $110.00 plus a $10.00 tip is a lot of money to me for nothing. I don't mind paying it if it's going to last three four weeks. Chari might know how to do hair but not crochet. Since there is a Shari there maybe the recommendation was for her. read more

Her assistant, Jaz, did a GREAT job of massaging my scalp and shampooing/conditioning my hair. Frank, also, displayed professional managerial skills. Their online appointment service is an added convenience. All the stylists and assistants are well experienced. In addition, the environment is clean, organized and "Serene", just like the name implies. Today, I had my first appointment and will be going back on a regular basis. This was my first time there and it was excellent. Teamwork is key and they had it! I got there before my appointment time but they acknowledged I was there. My stylist was so good had no problems with me asking questions, and encouraged it! The other stylist focused more on the condition of my hair, which was very important to me. She relaxed it and set it. My hair was not in bad condition, but would like to keep it that way. I believe continuing to go there, would get my hair in even better condition. Living so far outside of the city, especially in the western 'burbs, it is VERY hard to find a PROFESSIONAL salon that caters to African-American hair, but I think I hit the jackpot with Serene Hair Design! First and foremost, they do NOT allow children, unless they are being serviced...nothing against the kiddies, but it totally makes sense. Making my appointment was very simple. I got there about 10 minutes early and had to fill out a form asking about my styling routine and concerns I had about my hair (this the FIRST time any salon showed that much consideration). I was getting a relaxer and they did ask about the relaxer I currently use and if I was satisfied with it (again...another first).My stylist, Tarika, was working with a client, but she still had her assistant prep me, but Tarika actually took care of the chemical application. I won't continue with the blow-by-blow breakdown, but I will say that I was HIGHLY impressed with that atmosphere of the salon. There was not a lot of catty/gossipy conversation going on, these women kept it PROFESSIONAL. For it to have been a Friday afternoon, the salon was pretty busy, but no client was left unattended for any extended amount of time. I'm telling you these women have it together! My stylist, Tarika, all I can say is "WOW!" I got soooo many compliments on my hair :-D. She is the BEST! I think I've found a new shop home :-). read more

One day I decided to try the goddess braids and found out that only one person in the shop does them. Her name is Kavonta and I normally go to Leandrea to get my hair done. So I made an appt for myself and my sister. I had never interacted with Kavonta before so I was hoping she was nice. Unfortunately, things went south real quick. My sister went first and I had to show Kavonta a picture of how my sis wanted her hair. Basically she wanted little braids going up into the two big braids. I immediately sensed attitude from her and she wasn't even looking at me while I was explaining things to her. She stated that it was too time consuming and that I SHOULD'VE explained it ahead of time (FIRST red flag). Now the shop was crowded so I understood, but I did not appreciate the way she talking to me. So my sisters hair is finally done and she has two big braids (they were cute) then my sister comes and sits next to me and whispers that Kavonta was talking about me to her co worker. She was basically upset that she had a lot to do and was complaining that she still had to do my hair and that I wanted 4 braids instead of 2 and rolled her eyes (SECOND red flag). So I guess that was too much for her. I politely grabbed all my things and told her that I wanted to pay and leave WITHOUT getting MY hair done. I went to another lady and got my hair done instead. Please learn how to be professional and don't gossip about your clients, especially in front of the clients siblings. Is this really how black women operate? Being new to the Romeoville area, I was looking for a shop that was somewhat close specialized in black-hair care. I was very pleased when I found Serene. I had just taken my sew-in down, Friday night and I did not comb through my hair well enough because after I got done shampooing it I ended up with a big tangled mess. Even after putting the detangling conditioner on my hair. I could not do anything with it. I was very worried and thought that I was going to have to get all of hair cut off in order to release all of the dead hair that tangled in with my hair. (Having always had long hair, I was very scared of getting all of my hair cut off). So first thing Saturday morning, I called the shop and let them know what had happened and they said that I could actually come in right away. After arriving to the shop and having a couple different stylist look at my hair, 3 stylist worked together on combing through the tangled mess, that I had created. They kept reassuring me that everything was going to be okay. After some time and a whole lot of effort from these ladies, they untangled my hair and I did not loose very much at all. I received my wash and blow dry and left there satisfied. Kavontis, my stylist for the day, also talked to me after she finished styling me and gave me some tips on what to do with my hair until my next appointment. The atmosphere of the shop was very calm and professional and though I went in with a very stressful situation, I surprisingly began to relax soon after my arrival. I also like the fact that I got to use a coupon for being a first time client. Serene had a very positive atmosphere and these ladies are very great at what they do!! My stylist Kavonta Leaks works out of Serene Hair Design, a professional servicing salon. I am pleased to report that when I am in the shampoo bowl under the direction of Kavonta's fingers or that of her trained assistant it is a magical experience. The massage my scalp receives is calming in ways you could only imagine which is welcomed after a stressful week at the office. Kavonta not only comes across as patient and caring with respect to the treatment of my scalp but she takes time to explain my options and recommends conditioning treatments to help improve my future outcome. She is overall the most experienced stylist I have ever encountered. Additionally, when it comes to applying weave to my severely sensitive, damaged, bald (60%) scalp, Kavonta's technique has an end presentation of natural looking. If you were not privy to the procedure you would not be able to tell that I am sporting weaved-in hair. She uses a method known as no braid invisible sew-in. [OTHER STYLISTS have pulled what little hair I do have into a tight braid applying an enormous amount of stress to my already sensitive scalp as a result placing me in an agonizing uncomfortable state for more than a week in addition to causing headaches not to mention the tracks would loosen and become flawed for all to see]. Kavonta has many talents, she suggests I pick a style preference from one of the many style books the salon offers and she then proceeds to relax, color, cut and style my hair in a way that is complementary to my facial structure.
