The front desk staff then pulled out a tip sign that was hidden behind another sign--something that should have been clearly visible from the start if it's truly their policy. On top of that, I was charged more on my card than what I was told. Fifteen percent does not equal twenty percent, and that kind of discrepancy is unacceptable. To make matters worse, the towels used during the service had a noticeable mildew smell, especially the one placed on my face, which completely took away from what should have been a relaxing experience. Overall, between the lack of transparency, pressure around tipping, being overcharged, and poor hygiene standards, this was not a professional or comfortable environment. I called ahead to make an appointment for a 60 minute massage, but when I arrived, the only person available to do my massage was the receptionist. Kim did a good job on the massage (excellent pressure and very relaxing), but she had to run out a couple of times to address her front desk duties. I was happy with the massage, so I tipped 20%, which came out to be less than $20 (this is worth mentioning for what happens at my next appointment), then was on my way. I should also mention that on my way out, a man next to me at the counter who seemed to be a staff member but very well could have been a customer was clearly staring at me but not talking to me--creepy! 2nd experience (today): 1 star. I made an appointment for a 60 minute deep tissue massage. I arrived a bit early. No one was at the front desk, so I waited until 5 minutes before my appointment time to ring the bell. A different receptionist help me get set up and into my room. My therapist, Amanda, started my massage 10 minutes late, but to her credit, she made up the time so that I got my full 60 minutes. Although the pressure was fine (I needed the strong pressure for my knots and sore muscles), she was a bit rough and sloppy with the massage. For example, she would grab my skin so that it felt like I was being pinched (I discovered a bruise from this when I got home), and she yanked my underwear around a lot (she could have done this with more care). As a result, I only wanted to tip the minimum 15%, but after she counted how much I gave her in front of me(!!), she pulled out a sign that the business requires a minimum of a $20 tip for 60-minute massage because she couldn't express herself in English and got her coworker to explain that tipping at a massage parlor is different than tipping at a restaurant as the therapists work very hard. There are so many things wrong with this. My initial complaint is that they should be more transparent with their pricing by posting this sign up with their prices, but guess what? That's illegal, which is why they showed me a sign after the fact. Also, asking for a tip makes it not a tip. Finally, I would sure love to hear what restaurant servers have to say about her response because I guess servers don't work as hard as massage therapists? In all seriousness, if businesses need to provide a better wage for their workers, increase the massage price; tips need to be earned! Tips were traditionally meant To Insure Proper Service, but I definitely did not receive proper service. Try at your own risk, but the quality of your massage is hit or miss and I wouldn't want to support the business practices and customer service that I experienced.

Parking was available on nearby surface streets. There appeared to be a small parking lot behind the building too. The massage parlor takes place inside an "office building" with numerous "suites." The office building is multi-level with a stairs that gets you up to the 2nd floor. The break room seems to be communal with other "suites." The massage took place inside a suite. There appears to be two "beds" sectioned off by sheer curtains. After spending time in Thailand, I've been on the lookout for a strong traditional Thai massage therapist. Many of the "Thai massages" in the area mix the traditional Thai massage with the western massage styles by adding oil etc.... Informed the therapist that I was looking for a Thai traditional massage without oil and strong, just like in Thailand. The therapist was strong, did numerous stretches, just like in Thailand. $95/hr + gratuity with $5 off for paying cash. There appears to be a promo program where there is a discounted rate for buying sets of massages. The massage parlor seems to be by appointment only.

I also sit long hours at the computer for work. This combo was destroying my body and earlier in the week I booked a massage at my usual place but it unfortunately didnt hit the spot. I told my boss my issues and my boss recommended cupping so I started looking for places around me in Santa Clara. I came across Back and Body Wellness and browse their website. They had a bunch of offerings that I've actually been meaning to try. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, so I gave them a call to discuss my issues and my interests and ultimately booked a TMJ 80min session with Jonathan C. which was ~20min TMJ and the rest of the time was for massage in specific problem areas I had (upper back tightness), and right leg / right hip issues. They are in a shared building and their office is closer to the streetside on the second floor. Upon entering, there is a small open lobby with a few seats and there are a few rooms as well as an big open space which looks like people can do PT (physical therapy) type stuff. I ended up not doing the cupping. Jonathan was able to work out a lot of tension in my body with incredible technique. This is probably the best or top 3 massages of my life and I've gotten hundreds of massages (I used to get weekly sports massages when I was more active). The prices matched the website and the appointment was great. After the session, Jonathan gave me a few stretches to work on as well working through the logic of what my body is doing.
