This is a good place for small groups who need a casual atmosphere with BYOB and outside seating. The name "Serg's" is clunky, but the salsa is far from chunky and literally "surges" out of the containers at the salsa bar. The pickled jalapeños are delicious, but will require some fishing with a pair of tongs that usually sit on the dirty counter. Serg's won't sell chips for their awesome salsa. Chips only leave the kitchen on a plate of nearly cheese-less nachos or by sneaking out one-by-one as a "garish" stuck into the beans that come on the side of a burrito. Rice and beans are automatically added to burrito orders but are not included in the posted price. If you want to pay the posted burrito price, you must specify that you do not want rice and beans. The meat dishes are tasty, but for people who don't eat meat the best options are the vegetarian burrito or fish tacos. The vegetables in the vegetarian burrito are fajita-style bell peppers and an over-abundance of cheap canned corn and black beans. The fish tacos come on fried corn tortillas with a creamy cabbage slaw. The kitchen has steadfastly maintained that it cannot put the fish into a flour tortilla. If you want fish, it must be in a taco; if you want a burrito, it must contain chicken, steak, or vegetables. NO FISH BURRITO FOR YOU. Lastly, Serg's serves everything on plastic or in Styrofoam, but will not give away plastic cups for water-- you may purchase the cups for $.25. Serg's "recycles" by happily collecting your used beer bottles. The "recycle" bins are right next to the garbage bins brimming with equally recyclable, but unprofitable, plastic. read more

The food is the best Mexican you'll find on island. I've eaten here more times than I can count. But they only get 3 stars because they've recently changed something that basically ruins it for me: they've done away with the salsa bar! Now you only get the tiniest amount of salsa with your order, and they don't have the diversity of options. The spicy avocado salsa was the best part of every meal here! Now they don't even have it, and if they did, I only get a tablespoon for my entire dish, unless I want to pay $0.75 for each additional teeny cup. Only ate mexican food once while we were on the Island. I'm so glad we chose this place. Small little joint but don't let that scare you. The best mexican food I've had seems to always come from the hole in the wall type restaurants. As usual I got the white boy go-to (a chimichanga ) and it was legit. My girl got the carnitas plate and she was very happy. I can't wait to go back yo Oahu. I will be eating here again for sure. Update; Went back to serg's the week of 4/19/2016 and found them to be rude and unwelcoming. The whole time i was eating my fish tacos i was thinking of if they spit in my food. I figure that they are not tourist friendly. On this part of the island the locals are not too friendly to "haole" as I was called by one man. And dirty looks were not uncommon from others. I get it. Tourism clogs their roads and some "mainlanders" have no respect for the locals and their ways. You can tell the when someone is a tourist because they drive like aggressive a-holes like they do in southern California. The locals are much more relaxed and show courtesy to each other. Not much of that back home. But anyways when you have a business and you except customers cash and are rude in exchange there are places like yelp and trip adviser where others can be warned about your behavior. Great street tacos. I usually go for taco tuesday, before the college rush. Sometimes the girl at the counter is friendly, sometimes she comes off as being over working there and isn't friendly. You have been warned....DON'T GO THERE!!! Quality and service has gone wayyyyy downhill. There is no salsa bar. On Sunday, 11/18/18, I went there for the last time ever. There was a very, very rude countergirl who shows she does NOT want to be there. She was of mixed ethnicity. We had questions about the menu and prices as we believed we were overcharged. Every question was met with disgust. She even said, in an exasperated way, "I JUST WORK HERE!!!" There are other places in the city who will treat you like a human being. Pretty good Mexican food! Dive-like location, but well worth it after seeing a play at the nearby Manoa Valley Theater. My brother actually told me about it and since then it has remained as my all time fave place for Mexican food on the island. My favorite thing on the menu is their flautas. Crispy yummy goodness...slaughtered with hot sauce and you got yourself a winner! Their rice isn't dry, but moist and flavorful. I'm usually not a refried bean sort of person as-I-usually-scoop-it-up-and-place-it-on-whoever-I-brought-to-lunch-with-me's plate. However, at Serg's I'll gobble it like up like there's no tomorrow. Their salsas and hot sauces are homemade and not that prepackaged junk you find at other places. What I love the most about this place is its no frills attitude. You simply order at the window, pick a seat (which is outdoors), and wait to be called. It's simply good Mexican food in a chill environment. My son and I tried this after a long day at the playground at Manoa park. We loved the chicken burrito, which came with beans and flavorful red rice. Decent Mexian food this far from Mexico = bonus. I'm from San Diego and am used to the BEST Mexican food, and Serg's--while not quite the corner taco shops of my childhood--does a great job. Our requirements for a decent Mexican restaurant: beans (Serg's are black and pretty good), salsa (hot avo salsa is SOOO tasty, I could drink it), and meat (carnitas are tender and really good)...so, Serg's passes the test and is one of our staples, restaurant-wise. Cons: a little over-priced ($8+ for a bean and cheese burrito--granted, it comes with a mountain of rice and beans--is a bit much, IMO) and a sort of limited menu. The flautas are so popular but we're not super impressed with a skinny chimichanga. The carnitas and bean and cheese burritos are better bets, and the fish tacos are good as well. I wish they'd have chips, but can see why they don't: they wouldn't be able to keep up with that YUMMY green avocado salsa. BIG pro: BYOB. Love that, as having more than one drink can blow a restaurant budget real fast. And other reviewers have had issues with eating "in a gas station" but we like the environment. I do wish they'd use less styrofoam...it seems like a HUGE waste, and I'm not even that environmentally anal. Add on: the last time I went, the beans were burnt-tasting and I got some NASTY piece of pork (like a big vein tube or something--almost made me throw-up) in some carnitas nachos. The "bueño": they have a decent selection of salsas and it's pretty consistent; so yaaay! I ordered every selection of tacos just to see what was good and what I needed to stay clear of. The "No bueño: stay clear of the chorizo and chicken (even if it was free, no gracías). The carne asada was rather salty and dry today, the carnitas, well it's pulled pork and the pork w/green sauce, it's the only item that was not dry. If you like menudo then this is not the place for you. Yup, i took one for team! I got the last bowl of menudo which smelt like uncleaned beef tripe. I had to use up all the 5 wedges of lime juice. Still had a little kick of a smell. I didn't like it either that the pieces of tripe was not bite size pieces. They were big that it didn't fit on the spoon. Serg's is very average. Their prices are a little steep and the food is good...for Hawaii Mexican food. They host a poppin' Taco Tuesday during UH Manoa's school year but you can find better deals and better tacos elsewhere.
