I've passed this place so many times on my way in and out of Manoa Valley that I didn't really even notice it was there. People use to tell me it's next to Boston's Pizza....but I'm not a fan of Boston's so I never really venture here. So finally one night a buddy of mine says let's get the fellas together for a night out and it was decided to hit this place. First off it's BYOB so that's already a big plus. The seating is outdoors but it's covered so even though it's windy and raining you're still able to stay dry and warm. I got the Mexican City Tacos. One chicken and one grilled meat with rice and beans. I'll be terribly honest here and I hate to say this because the service staff here is so friendly and nice. But my chicken was a bit dry and the meat had a lot of grizzle which was very disappointing. The beans and rice were good but I was let down by the chicken and meat. My friend there was saying this was the best Mexican place he's ever eaten in Hawaii....he isn't local but he's lived here for a number of years now. He basically had the same thing I did so I'm wondering if I just got the bad pieces of meat. My other friend did get the Carnitas flauta which I hear they are know for. He let me try it and this I have to say was really good. I wanna give them a second chance and the next time I'm here I gotta get the flauta! Ono for some Al Pastor, I made the trek over to Serg's in Manoa at the recommendation of Santi. While not as good as some of the Mexican food that I have eaten on the mainland, the food was still decent being that we are in Hawaii. Always on the look out for good Al Pastor, I ordered the burrito combo which came with rice & beans topped with cotija cheese I think. What I loved about the burrito was that the pork was moist & juicy and it didn't hurt that the burrito was fairly substantial as well. The only downside of Serg's is the limited parking since they do share the same parking lot with a few other businesses, so it does get crowded during lunch. read more

Today.... I had a craving for mexican food. BUUUUUUT Serg's disappointed me today. We came at 12:30pm, so yes, we were in lunch hour. But the service was really slow. It took 5-6 minutes for the person at the counter to acknowledge me. It wouldn't kill you to tell the people who are waiting, "I'll be with you in just a minute." While I was waiting for my food, I noticed the line piled up and he didn't acknowledge the waiting customers either. The line was getting 6-7 people deep and starting to move outside of the tent. What was even more annoying was...a lady that ordered two people behind us, got her order first? If she did a take-out order and phoned in, why did she still put in her lengthy order...? O_O Whatever. Then, my boyfriend asked for one of those fruits sodas. But they ran out of the flavor he wanted. But we were still charged for it on the receipt. My boyfriend didn't want to make a hassle, so he told me just leave it alone. It was almost $3 though! What we ordered: - Chicken Chimichanga - Chicken Quesadilla - Chicken Taco salad I was pretty satisfied with my chimichanga because it was so much food. But the beans they put inside was a thick paste, and it was chunky inside my chimichanga. My sister said her taco salad looked like crumbled up canned chicken lol. BUT she liked it. I'm not sure what my boyfriend thought of his quesadilla, since he took it to work with him. After seeing this on yelp, I decided to check out Serg's during their taco tuesday. AWESOME tacos and really inexpensive. I would recommend the carnitas and get some salsa on the side. They give you plenty of lime for seasoning, it compliments the tacos. Being from the mainland, I know good mexican food. This is the closest I have seen to good mexican food on island. Like i mentioned on the Cholos Post im orginally from New Mexico so my standards for Mex or TexMex food is pretty high. I like the mercado style and color of the building, the salsa playing (even tho thats not mexican but always enjoyable) and the laid back appeal. The first time i went i saw a sign that said "menudo sold here", right away my eyes got big, so first thing i did was order a bowl of menudo and a jarritos (yes they have jarritos :D). as soon as the menudo came out only thing i taught was "ok this looks legit but we will see". my first bite i just had flash backs of my mom bringing my my menudo with some lime. Right after the first memorizing bite from the menudo i imediately went to the beans and rice. The color of the beans was a little darker than i usually have but it didn't bother me any(i usually mix my spanish rice with the beans). once i took a bite of my arroz y frijoles i once again had flash backs of my mom giving me some beans and rice with a homemade tortilla. my second visit was even better, i went on Cinco De Mayo! they had a 1$ taco special of course i was all over it! i ordered 6 tacos with beans and rice. just like last time the beans and rice were just as good! the tacos were awesome also! it was just how i remember having them on a warm summer night with the fam, the most memorizing part of the tacos was the cilantro and the choices of salsa! Time to get real and revisit my favorite Mexican spot. This is a little embarrassing, but I waited 50 minutes for a simple order of 4 tacos and nachos. No. Friggin. Exaggeration. Given, it was Cinco De Mayo, but we got there at 4pm, there was no line at the counter and only a few people waiting for food. At the 30 minute mark, I went to the counter to check the status of our order, we were hungry! I was told they had a lot of phone orders that they were fulfilling, too. That's not a very good answer. When people who order after us start getting their food and eating, I go from frustrated to angry. So finally FINALLY our order comes, and my girlfriend and I angrily, begrudgingly eat our (delicious) food. Not fun. This is no isolated incident, either. Even on normal days during off-peak hours, the food can take 20+ minutes. Serg's kitchen and management, I'm talking to you now. I've been a loyal customer from the start. I've driven dozens upon dozens of people to your establishment, and many of them have become regulars, as well. It's pretty obvious, I love Serg's, so I'm going to give it to you straight. Get your s*** sorted out. 20 minutes for a basic order during off hours, that's not acceptable. At the very least, be real with the customers! Tell us if the order is going to take more than 15 minutes because that's when we start getting anxious. I have to give credit to young staff working the register recently. They've actually been friendly and helpful. A little tip though, even if you're busy as hell, if a customer is waiting, say, "Hi, I'll be right with you" with a smile. It helps, a lot. C'mon, taco Tuesday tacos for $1.50? Who can say no to that?! Plus they have a lot of different kinds of tacos to choose from. I ordered four tacos... Steak, chicken, pork and grilled fish. (Fish tacos are $2 though). I had to take a bite of them all to taste each one before I got too full. The lady behind the counter recommended to only get three tacos haha. I was hungry! But I enjoyed the pork the most. The fish taco also had a different kind of dressing inside it, like ranch dressing I think. They were all so yummy! Very good Mexican food!! We've tried serg's nachos, flauta, taco salad, enchiladas, pork carnitas, burritos and fish burrito. All of them were amazing!! Any choice of the meat is a great choice. From the steak, shredded beef, shredded chicken, pork carnitas or al pastor. Just choose to your liking. Top two favorites are the taco salad and flauta. The taco salad come with a homemade cilantro dressing that is amazing! I'm not a big fan of cilantro but I'll use this dressing. The flauta comes with beans and rice and they are delicious as well! The flauta is so crunchy and delicious. It takes a while for your food to be done, but it's no problem since they make sure to cook your food right. There is only outdoor seating but it's covered. The chicken enchiladas were covered in a whiteish cream sauce but overall lacking flavor and substance. They were served with some purple ish/brown mushy stuff. I'm not sure if it was a type of bean or not. The plate also came with some pretty bland Spanish rice. They have a very large selection of menu items; plan to spend more than 10. There is an area which offers various types of sauces free for customers. The sauces are housed in plastic bottles. You may have to shake the salsa-typed sauces rigorously in order to get them to dispense as the hole on the container doesn't allow for the thick and chunkiness to pass through very easily. The service we experienced wasn't much at all. I called while I was in the area to help locate them and wasn't very pleased with the personality or lack thereof on the other end of the line. I tend not to appreciate it when businesses have folks answering the phone who don't seem to care then hang up without saying "goodbye". The order taker was just that...an order taker. Kind of bleh. I swear there's a shortage of mexican restaurants on O`ahu. Or maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. Cisco's in Kailua use to be my favorite mexican place. Close to home, decent prices, great li hing mui margaritas. But since they closed, it seems like there's no mexican places, especially on the windward side, at least good ones. I've heard of Serg's, pasted by it a few times on my way to the crepe cafe next door. So one day, a friend and I decided to stop by. Very wise decision on his part. I got the pork carnitas. The pork is so tender, and juicy, similar to Kalua, but not quite. It also comes with a salsa, that was good. I love that refreshing flavors, in addition to the spiciness, not too overpowering though. It also came with spanish rice and refried beans. I'm not a big fan of either but Serg's does it justice. And lastly, it comes with two tortilla wraps. When you get it, it will be in a foil, super hot. No, it's not those warm hand towels to wipe your hands with. In addition, the prices aren't too bad, around $10 per person. The atmosphere is very unique I think. It isn't a restaurant It is much similar to Kaka`ako kitchen, where you order, and they deliver your food to you, but no waiter service, and seating is outside. By far the best Mexican food between Mexico and Japan. Possibly the best mexican food between the West coast of Mexico and the East coast of Mexico. Their flautas are amazing. The corn quesadilla (with carne asada) is to die for. You can tell they get the authentic queso (I think they might even make it themselves) and the beans are even amazing. A good selection of salsas and their horchata is the freshest I've ever had. Best of all, their flan tastes like home-made with just the right sweetness and smoothness. This has become my go-to restaurant whenever I'm visiting Oahu (I live on Molokai) and if they went out of business I would lose half the reason for visiting that island at all. While the food is better suited for a sit-down restaurant it is nontheless enjoyable in it's current plate-lunch format. The service is a bit slow (understandable, they are new) and the staff doesn't fully understand their own ingredients but the food is stellar and outshines any mistakes the staff/setting have made. The salsa selection is reminiscent of the salsa bar at Maui Tacos though showcases very different flavors that I had expected. What I love about food trucks is the convenience of traveling and changing locations from one place to another. Plus, having a brick and mortar and a traveling truck is a great partnership in itself. For example, Leonards Bakery, they're everywhere! Serg's Mexican Kitchen has been around for some time now and their location in Manoa. I only chose to ignore them because I was too bitter about my Mexican being the best back home in SoCal. Despite all that, I do confess to having returned a few times, which rings the bell for me to finally write this review. The options are plenty with the usual burritos, tacos, taco salads and appetizers. However, my first try was with the fish tacos. I'm particular with what goes into my plate. This is served either grilled or breaded. I chose it to be breaded on top of 5" soft tortillas with homemade slaw. The secret sauce puts a lot of oomph into the texture. The guac is real stuff, none of that fake packet junk served at places that don't have time to make the real thing. Another one of my favorites is the Flauta. The Flauta is like a giant taquito rolled in a 12" flour tortilla which is lightly fried. This is available in choices of shredded beef, chicken, pork carnitas, al pastor (shepherd style) or sautéed veggies atop minced cilantro and white onions, with a side of beans and Spanish rice. The meat is cooked to perfection and the quality of the sauces, rice and veggies are fresh. For the price, all dishes are served close to a size big enough to share between two people. I can only recommend that ordering from Serg's requires a full hungry stomach. I especially like when Luxury and Bubu (the chef) is around. Luxury is purely friendly and listens to any food concerns and or allergy problems. Bubu is the magic behind the scenes and makes sure the order goes out as requested. Just for the customer service, it makes me want to come back again and again. When I go to rate Mexican food I always think of the region in Mexico it's from. Tex Mex will not taste like Baja nor will the regions like Chihuahua or Guadalajara. It's like saying the US all tastes the same and judge them on food from New York, Florida, Texas, and California. Not at all. Just think of the 10 or more styles of BBQ sauce. The grilled pineapple on the al pastor (I believe it was that one I have tried ALL their tacos) it sooo delicious. The rice is great and a huge and at a great price. Had some snacks and pupus along the way until we finally arrived at our final destination: SERG'S. I'm originally from town and haven't had them in almost 6 years as I've been out here in Ewa Beach. Let me tell you that even years later they did NOT disappoint!! We ordered an elote, torta, chile relleno, gordita, and a cup of consumé. There are no pictures cos we tore those dishes up before we could even think of it. The elote (Mexican corn on a stick) was creamy and savory. The torta was massive and flavorful. The chile relleno had a nice think batter, past max capacity with the cheese, and a generous serving of spicy green sauce. The gordita (we picked steak) was a more recent item added to their menu. It was like a little fat steak sandwich on a white corn biscuit-style bun. Biscuit isn't entirely accurate but it's the best way I can describe it. They were definitely not stingy with the sour cream and cilantro. Last was the consumé, which you will typically find served with birria tacos. No, they don't sell birria tacos but I don't even care cos that's not what I went for anyway. I'm not a fad-eater. BUT I will tell you this was the BEST consumé you will find in this state. Every spoonful screamed "I'm RICH, B***H!". I highly recommend going out of your way to eat here. Don't eat here if you only like Tex-Mex or American style Mexican food. This place is not much to look at, but it is a good fast meal option if you are in the area. We were headed back from the falls and did not want to wait to get back to Waikiki for lunch. There is not a lot of parking in their lot, so you may need to park nearby. You walk up to the counter to place your order and then they call your number. There is picnic table seating under the overhang. The drink options are quite limited. I ended up with a lime soda. It was good, but I would have preferred a Coke or Pepsi style option. It is not a deal breaker but it is worth noting. I ordered a chorizo quesadilla. I am a sucker for chorizo. It was a good quesadilla. It is simple and has solid flavors. It would be best as an appetizer for a couple people, but it worked as a meal for me. There are two other options in the same building so you can each get what you want. read more
