Lunch at the edge of Kaimuki, Honolulu, Hawaii... My dentist and I both hadn't never been to Oahu Mexican Grill. We've passed by many times because it's on the busy corner of Waialae Avenue and Saint Louis Heights Drive. The free, small parking lot is shared with businesses such as Hihimanu Sushi, Babes Bakery, Nola Cafe, and Vons Chicken. Inside, the music is a bit loud and there's no air-conditioning. The door was open to let a slight breeze in. Service was pleasant and efficient! The nice gal explained that this was a Chipotle-style of build-your-own meal. Just choose your proteins, salsa, and toppings. Cool! We decided to get a Two Taco plate each and taste each other's beans (black vs pinto) and swap a taco with each other (grilled steak vs braised beef). We chose different toppings (Pico de Gallo vs Verde tomatillo sauce). We both got Poblano corn salsa and cilantro-lime rice. There was a slight kick in the proteins and salsas. The meats were tender and juicy! The tortillas were sturdy! I thought that the black beans were tastier than the pinto beans. It was a fun foodie adventure!

Ordered delivery from here a few weeks ago, I had the braised beef bowl + guacamole. It was good! Also had a side of chips and guac which was yummy. One of my coworkers was missing his Mexican brownie that he ordered and another burrito was completely missing, but this was probably an error on Doordash's behalf.

The parking lot is a little stressful on a pretty busy intersection but there's quite a few stalls. I finally got a chance to stop in to this cute place. The employees were friendly and I was pleasantly surprised I could get a Modelo with my grilled steak salad. It came with lettuce and black beans and salsa. I upgraded and got a scoop of guacamole. There are a few tables inside to eat at and they seemed to have a lot of take out orders. Salad was good but I wasn't too impressed. Maybe ill go and try something else next time.

I got the grilled steak bowl as I'm not a fan of tortilla wraps. The bowl was pretty huge and had a good assortment of ingredients. I got the Spanish rice with black beans and grilled steak. It was topped with lettuce and sour cream. I added a side of guacamole. Everything tasted great together. The bowl was full of different flavors. The steak was seasoned with chipotle. There was a lot of gristle in the steak however. They do state that they use free-range grass fed beef. I washed it down with a pineapple Jarritos drink. Those sodas are so good and very carbonated.

Saw this place had a happy hour; so I was super excited. Thinking to myself some queso and chips or appetizers and a margarita sounds delicious. Heard mexican music playing, was getting in the spirit. Walked up steps to the next level only to be disappointed, it was just like a chipotle. I thought this originally was more like a legit mexican restaurant. I looked around and decided I didn't want any food; and we'll just get one drink each and then take off. It was kinda expensive still for it being happy hour. I think we were some of the oldest people here; seems like more of a hangout for teens or families.

Steak bowl with only 1 scoop of rice and lettuce added - yum. Good serving for $14.

I'm not sure why this place has poor reviews - maybe it depends on the day. Our server was nice, food was fast and tasty, and the prices were not unreasonable for Honolulu Mexican - I've certainly paid more here for less good food and smaller portions. The steak (nice char), carnitas (more like kalua pork but still tasty), and fish (grilled nicely, not like some of the other posts) were all actually better than I expected to be honest. There are two rice choices and two bean choices and although simple, I appreciate that they weren't over salted - flavor comes from the protein and ample choice of freshly made salsas. Total was $84 post tip for 4 meals (plus 1 churros) but we're full and this is just what it costs for a lunch out these days. Honolulu is pretty underwhelming for Mexican and this may be the best I've found. I would skip the churros next time though as they were overfried and greasy.

Today I have tried the chicken burrito and the food was so fresh and healthy. The ingredients were fresh and I felt really good after eating and it was very tasty. The service was great, they were so helpful and friendly.

Our son ordered the nachos appetizer as his main meal, my husband got the Mexico burrito, and I ordered the carnitas plate. I tried a bit of everyone's food, and honestly, we had zero complaints. Every dish was packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. The meat was tender, not overly salty or chewy at all. The guacamole was even creamy! To put the value into perspective: a few days earlier, I bought three carne asada tacos with very little meat from a food court in Waikiki, and they were only a few dollars cheaper than my entire, massive plate here. The pricing is incredible for the generous portions you get, making it a great budget friendly option compared to everywhere else we ate while visiting Honolulu. My husband even noted that he had never had Mexican food this good in the States especially considering Honolulu is so far from the border! He rarely raves about restaurants, so the fact that he's already talking about coming back makes this place an absolute must try.

Mostly due to their location in the middle of the street with a handful of street parking locations shared with multiple other businesses down the lane. It took us 3 rounds of driving before we ended up deciding it was better to drop me off to order and pick up the food and have my man drive around into another larger parking lot to wait the 15-ish minutes it would take for our food to be ready. The owners were so nice. Answering all of my insistent questions, smiling when I ended up ordering something different from what they recommended on the menu (my bad - it's a question I ask all businesses even though I usually decide what I want beforehand LOL). They asked if I needed a bag, if I needed utensils and napkins, and even checked in on me while they made the food! Awesome service and I'm sure it would be the same if we decided to eat in. I liked the atmosphere. It was small but homely, clean, and there were a few small fish tanks in the corner! 15-ish minutes later, food packed up - I jumped back in the car and we drove down to South Shore Market in Ward to eat at the tables and take a glance if Ocean Taste's line was... long (it was). And let me tell you... the food? Delicious. The amount of food? Good for the price! And overall pretty darn great experience. I wasn't the biggest fan of the spicy pork (not my preference). But my fiancé liked it and his only comment was that it was a bit greasy for his liking. Reminded him he was in-fact eating spicy pork which is normally served on his plate lunch in a piece of tinfoil so the oil doesn't get everywhere! The carne asada was super delish along with the gochujang hot sauce cups we found at the bottom of the bag. I'd get K-Mex HI again if I was in the area but I'd love to see them in another location where I can more easily park! That's the only real bummer about this place and has deterred me from returning. :(
