I think this is the closest you'll get to Chipotle on island. There are two locations that I know of, one in Waikiki and one just outside of Waikiki. The location outside Waikiki is more convenient because of the parking, but overall, both are fine. If I had to choose between Oahu Mexican Grill (OMG) and Paniolos, I would choose OMG 1,000%! Food tastes good. Don't recommend the horchata. Saw a handwritten sign saying, "we have Horchata." Decided to try it but incredibly disappointed. It had a lot of cinnamon, but not worth the expensive experience. The size of the cup was smaller than a 12 oz can of soda. Few sips and it's gone. Definitely not worth the money, Horchata costs $5.00. Soda costs $3.00. If you need to get the soda. I expected it to be the size of a regular drink anywhere. We've passed by many times because it's on the busy corner of Waialae Avenue and Saint Louis Heights Drive. The free, small parking lot is shared with businesses such as Hihimanu Sushi, Babes Bakery, Nola Cafe, and Vons Chicken. Inside, the music is a bit loud and there's no air-conditioning. The door was open to let a slight breeze in. Service was pleasant and efficient! The nice gal explained that this was a Chipotle-style of build-your-own meal. Just choose your proteins, salsa, and toppings. Cool! We decided to get a Two Taco plate each and taste each other's beans (black vs pinto) and swap a taco with each other (grilled steak vs braised beef). We chose different toppings (Pico de Gallo vs Verde tomatillo sauce). We both got Poblano corn salsa and cilantro-lime rice. There was a slight kick in the proteins and salsas. I've ordered their party packs a few times for events and they have been a big hit and really yummy, especially all the homemade salsas. the portions are generous and it is a crowd pleaser. it is not very spicy, so if you like heat, ask for some extra. The employees were friendly and I was pleasantly surprised I could get a Modelo with my grilled steak salad. It came with lettuce and black beans and salsa. I upgraded and got a scoop of guacamole. Honestly... this place is mid AF. burritos basically flavorless. guacamole and chips are fire though!

First of all, I split my time between CA and HI so I know a decent burrito from the ones that are a waste of time and money. It still blows me away that these Mexican restaurant owners don't ever seem to check out the good examples out there. With this food, the beans should be central and I do give them credit for serving whole beans and not bean paste. However, these people seem to cook these underdone beans from the back of the package. At 11:15, the meat was all prepared on a steam table and not fresh nor juicy or tasty. And like the other awful Mexican places here, they are putting guacamole dip on it which carries a taste of raw garlic that just ruins things. It was edible. The other problem is that I arrived on a Thursday, expecting a discount. The menu on the wall showed a price of $14 for my burrito by I was rung up at $17.50. When I reminded the cook/cashier he applied a discount. If this is by accident, you should lose two stars for borderline criminal behavior but I'm trying to be nice. And yeah, it might be the best Mexican on this island, I don't think any of them really know what they are doing. And no, we don't need fries in a burrito, just find great recipes without so much garlic and sugar. It's just gross. Well, I did eat half, it's big enough and the decor is fine. I got the grilled steak bowl as I'm not a fan of tortilla wraps. The bowl was pretty huge and had a good assortment of ingredients. I got the Spanish rice with black beans and grilled steak. It was topped with lettuce and sour cream. I added a side of guacamole. Everything tasted great together. The bowl was full of different flavors. The steak was seasoned with chipotle. There was a lot of gristle in the steak however. They do state that they use free-range grass fed beef. I washed it down with a pineapple Jarritos drink. Heard mexican music playing, was getting in the spirit. Walked up steps to the next level only to be disappointed, it was just like a chipotle. I'm not sure why this place has poor reviews - maybe it depends on the day. Our server was nice, food was fast and tasty, and the prices were not unreasonable for Honolulu Mexican - I've certainly paid more here for less good food and smaller portions. The steak (nice char), carnitas (more like kalua pork but still tasty), and fish (grilled nicely, not like some of the other posts) were all actually better than I expected to be honest. There are two rice choices and two bean choices and although simple, I appreciate that they weren't over salted - flavor comes from the protein and ample choice of freshly made salsas. Total was $84 post tip for 4 meals (plus 1 churros) but we're full and this is just what it costs for a lunch out these days. Honolulu is pretty underwhelming for Mexican and this may be the best I've found. I would skip the churros next time though as they were overfried and greasy. read more

Decided to make my way over for lunch. Initially I saw some poor reviews and thought that some might be mixed up with their Waikiki location. The service at their Kaimuki location is quite friendly and efficient. The food is decent. I ordered the bowl with half steak half braised beef. Added guacamole and an extra salsa, along with a combo of chips, salsa, and can juice($4). The braised beef has more flavor than the steak, steak was dry and tasted overly smoky. Their medium salsa isn't very spicy at all, I'd probably get spicy next time. It was about $17 with the 25% off. The bowl was huge especially with the additional chips. I should actually rename it "Only My Grub" as their menu basically is in what for do you want it... - Burrito (Texas-sized made your way) - Taco Plate (2 tacos with side of rice and beans) - Bowl (Texas-sized burrito without the tortilla) - Salad (Fresh romaine lettuce, southwest vinaigrette) - Super Nachos - Quesadilla (served with a side of salsa and sour cream) Then price will depend on your choice of protein of Grilled Chicken, Grilled Steak, Braised Beef, Kalua Carnitas, Roasted Veggie and Bean & Cheese I absolutely love that I get to choose what form my meal will be and it was a bowl for me as there are moments I don't feel like battling the crumbling crunchy shell or a messy tortilla so that's a plus and it was the Braised Beef as it's braised for 8 hours sounds absolutely amazing. There are seating available inside though parking is the real trick as it's along the insanely Waialae Ave and entrance and exit is the same though the parking is angled so on a full lot I wish you luck. This was my very first time and I did have an idea of what I wanted though still needed a moment to scan their menu and when I got there there was three staff standing and staring at me as they had nothing else to do, the person who assemble the order, cashier and kitchen staff all staring at me...awkward. It's been years since I last gone to "OMG - Oahu Mexican Grill", as I remembered the original OMG restaurant used to be in the Moiliili neighborhood (before they closed shop & moved to Waikiki). I was Jonesing for a Burrito today, and lucky for me OMG had opened up another restaurant located just at the bottom of the Saint Louis Heights neighborhood, just across the street from the City Mill. Parking here can be a little challenging at times as it's shared with other businesses within the small restaurant complex, but if you come at the right time, getting parking is not too bad at all. I guess I came at the right time today (as I came here a little after the normal lunch hour rush), and upon walking into OMG I was greeted right away by a clerk. After looking over the wall menu, I decided to get myself a Chicken Burrito. How it works - Basically you pick the item you want - Burrito, Taco Plate, Bowl, Salad, Super Nachos, or Quesadilla. From there, you choose your meat - Chicken, Grilled Steak, Braised Beef, Kalua Carnitas, Roasted Veggie, or Bean/Cheese. Last of all, you choose your filler items you want with your meal. I guess the ordering format is similar like if you go to a "Taco Del Mar" joint. So after I ordered my chicken burrito, I proceeded to add the following items - cheese, Spanish rice, black beans, lettuce, sour cream, & the hottest hot sauce that they had available. What can I say about my Chicken Burrito??? My chicken burrito was maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasive!!!! I noticed the clerk who built my burrito, he really packed a lot of crap into that burrito!!! Good flavor, a very generous serving, & great service! What more can you ask for??? The bowls and burrito could probably be for two or shared. I enjoyed the fish tacos; the sauces they included made it much better! I also tried the carne asada nachos and chicken bowl. The fries came with a good deal of guacamole (like if you were to pay extra); make sure to eat them fresh so the fries are still crispy! Parking is also pretty difficult. Usually I avoid writing negative reviews but I had a really bad experience here. I ordered Mahi mahi tacos. After waiting for quite a long time, I got my tacos with totally BURNT fish. It was literally hard like a rock. If any of the staff had told me that the fish was burnt and I need to wait for another one, I would have totally understood and waited for my food. How can they just serve a taco like that and pretend like nothing is wrong? I showed them the burnt fish and they agreed to make another one for me. However, after waiting for almost 20 mins and not getting the new ones, I had to leave because I was running super late by that time. We popped in here for a quick bite the other day. It's a similar setup to most of your standard burrito shops. All of the meats are gluten free and labeled! So, it was super easy to order! I chose the steak salad, which was good. Unfortunately for me, it was overshadowed by my partner's carnitas bowl which was super delish. Next time. Parking can be difficult. I placed an online order for pick up at the Kaimuki location. Let me tell you, Saddest bowl I've ever ordered. When I ordered for lunch on a Friday, the only free veggies you could add in were chopped onion and sour cream due to supplier issues. i understand that but when i order a bowl with grilled veggies, i would expect more than a couple of bites of veggies. I also added beans but they forgot to add that on and for the onions, sour cream, and salsa, I wish they were more generous. I felt like i was eating a rice bowl with a few veggies here and there. We just picked up dinner from here. The ordering process is kind of insane. We were almost not even gonna order here. I called the number listed on Yelp and it took me to a message that said that the voicemail box isn't set up. Sad face. So I was like "umm should we just chance it and go there." We live in Hawaii Kai and this place is in Kaimuki. I was hesitant. Then I found this order online link on their website. This was taking a chance since we didn't even know if they were open. I clicked the link to order from their website. Then they have another thing on their website to order from their app. So then I downloaded their app. After the app was downloaded I started putting what we wanted in our cart. We got the kids taco, fish tacos plate, carne asada fries, and Kalua carnitas burrito. The app gives you options on what kind of rice you want (Spanish rice or cilantro lime), bean, and any add ons you want. The app has limitations. I didn't want beans and I wanted extra rice but that wasn't an option. They need to have a spot where people can write comments below about what they want added. After putting the things in my cart, the app makes you register for an account and create a login. So humbug just to order some food. I think all of this could have been alleviated if they had a working phone number listed on Yelp or on their website. So we get the food and bring it home. So disappointed. I got the fish tacos plate. $15.50 for the plate. This is what it says online of what's in it: Two grilled Mahi-Mahi fish tacos, cabbage slaw and chipotle crema sauce on flour tortillas. Served with a side of rice and beans. As you can see from my picture, I was missing the rice. Sad face. My daughter had the kids taco but on the menu it doesn't specify what kind of meat would be in there. It was carne asada and it was too spicy for her. So she ate one of my fish tacos, which left me with one taco for dinner. The menu also says that kids meal comes with beans and rice. She had no beans in hers. It's a good thing my husband read some of the reviews and saw that the carne asada fries. So luckily we got those too. Those were good. Backstory: I've been going to OMG since they first opened in University area. It was a staple of my diet. I knew it was kismet when they had tapatio. I went there every week multiple times until they demolished the building they were in & were in location limbo. They since moved to Waikiki, but I don't visit the Waikiki location since prices were way higher, it's out of the way, and a pain in the ass to park in Waikiki, so I've just been going to this Waialae location. --------------------------------------- Value: 4/5 Thursday is the best value day to come as they have customer appreciation day with a discount. If you're curious as to how their bowls/burritos stack up, Thursday is the best day to come and try them out. Ingredients: 4/5 I've always liked their ingredients & the flavors mesh well and when I compare it to Chronic Tacos, OMG wins. The steak is probably the best option. They are missing Cilantro and lime here. Chronic wins if those are super important. They need a cheaper option for queso or guac addons, like half size or something, cause 3-4$ for a topping is crazy when extra meat is the same price. Maybe that's just me. Hot Sauces: 2/5 Their spiciest "habanero" barely tingles for me. Chronic tacos has their own assortment of hot sauces to add to the mix. Chronic wins. Tortilla: 2/5 Standard flour tortilla. My tortilla fell apart and flaked. My experience at Chronic Tacos didn't have this issue. This happens more often than I'd like. The melted cheese can only do so much to shield the tortilla and hold it together. Wrap: 0/5 Every time I get a burrito here, they always wrap it the wrong way. I watch them squish it and spread the guac I paid extra for, and then when I get home to eat it, all the guac and rice is on the bottom and all the steak is on top. There has never been a time that they got this right. I don't understand it. I literally ate my entire burrito and found my 3$ guac on the bottom. Brownies: Split Decision The oven broke at this location and they never opted to fix it, so they no longer make those delicious brownies here. Taste 5/5, availability 0/5.
