Late one night last week, I noticed the thermostat in my home creeping past 83°. I didn't panic at first because I planned to call my usual HVAC guy in the morning and figured he'd get me taken care of quickly. Well... he never called back after my 9 am voicemail . After texting him an hour later, I found out he had moved out of state. He referred me to a friend, assuring me he'd be able to help right away. Let's just say that friend never returned my calls or texts either. By late morning, I was starting to realize getting same-day service from a company I didn't already have a relationship with was probably going to be an uphill battle. In a slight panic -- because let's be honest, this is definitely a first-world problem, but I can no longer survive without AC -- we called Service Express. They were able to send two HVAC technicians out by 3 PM that same day, and thanks to them, I got to sleep comfortably on the first hot, sticky evening of the season. The technicians were incredibly kind and professional. They took great care to cover their shoes while inside my home, thoroughly explained the issue, and I felt the pricing was very fair. Have dealt with Alex and his team for over 40 years. Most recently, on a Monday I called at 10:30 am-no ac. Technician was out by noon. Diagnosed blown motor on a 23 year old system. He recommended a new system. Estimator was out by 3:30 with a solution. Unbelievably, at 7:30 am Tuesday am, two installers were on the job and it was up and running by Wednesday evening. A two day major job.. Supervisor was out on Thursday to make sure everything was functionally properly-which it was. They previously put another new unit in for me on another property the previous year. They are very reliable, knowledgeable, and honest. Among the best-I use no other for heating and ac.. This company needs a new phone person. I dread every time I need to call for a service due to Sherry. She talks to you like you're stupid. Arguing with me over a voicemail confirmation that I never received. Just checked my voicemails and yup never received a voicemail on 11/16/24. Service techs are great has nothing to do with that. But honestly if you're not happy in your own life don't take it to work. Do your research. I got quoted on a new furnace - but they didn't include make and model details in quote. When questioned about it, the unit they were quoting was an $800 furnace on a greater than 4k quote. I don't begrudge someone a margin but they were way over other bidders who were quoting much better furnaces. No way labor is over 3x parts. Make sure you do your research on exactly what furnace they are quoting and get competitive quotes on comparable units. read more

I won a gift card from here at a Silent Auction in May. So first off, this place is a okay in my book for their generous donation. I called to schedule an air conditioner clean and check. My office contact was Michelle. We set the date with a four hour window. Yesterday Michelle called to narrow the time to two hours (8am to 10am). Much appreciated. At 8am, on the dot, my doorbell rang. The technician was Paul. He was courteous, clean, and efficient at doing his job. Sometimes I have to clean up after service men leave my house. My furnace would periodically not ignite gas to heat up my home, so I called Service Express. Julien and Alex were able to diagnose the issue as a malfunctioning gas valve and showed me how they came to that conclusion i.e. they proved it to me, so I felt confident in their decision to order a replacement part. They showed up a day or so later after the part arrived to replace the gas valve and voila!, my furnace is working like a charm. Scheduled my annual boiler servicing with this company. Their technician came out and worked on it and afterwards asked what else, if anything, needed to be done. I advised to check out the heaters in all the rooms and how some got really hot and some stayed cold. He worked on it and said some of them needed to be bled. After he left, we noticed that we weren't getting any hot water in the house that evening and the following morning. I quickly called the company again and they sent out a couple of different technicians to address the problem. They checked it out and said a couple of valves connected to the hot water tank needed to be bled and weren't and this caused the lack of hot water flowing through the pipes. After they fixed that problem, one of the techs mentioned that a part on top of the hot water tank was also an issue and needed to be replaced as soon as possible. Someone from the company would be calling to provide an estimate. When someone did call to provide an estimate, I mentioned that a tech told me earlier that maybe the hot water tank was still under warranty since I had it installed just a few years ago. The person providing the estimate didn't know about this conversation and told me to send her an email with the serial # on the unit and a couple of pictures. I did so promptly but didn't hear back from the company the following day. When I called, that same person acknowledged receipt of the email and then said someone would be calling back shortly to schedule an appointment. I said its a pretty urgent matter and that some of the heaters are way too hot and so is the ambient temperature at my house. Still no phone call. After being a customer of theirs for so many years and spending thousands of dollars with them, I can't believe this level of customer support. Adding back a star since the manager called me and worked to rectify the mediocre service experience I had last week. And she offered to have one of their senior people come back and check the work,which, while nice, would require me to wait for the service person so I passed. (fingers crossed I didn't make the wrong decision!) Turns out they sent the wrong technician based on wrong information taken down by the scheduler. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!! Our heater stopped working on Monday, December 19, 2022. We are a part of the maintenance program. Their service technician, Cedric, came jolly on the spot and promptly charged us $1200 for a part that he said the furnace required (our furnace is about 4 yrs old). It's freezing outside, and we have a newborn, so we paid it to get things running again. By Friday morning, December 23, 2022, the furnace again stopped working. It's below 0 outside, and we called Cedric early in the morning to report that whatever he did Monday did not fix the issue because the heater stopped working again. He said he couldn't attend to the problem until sometime between 2pm-7pm. We told him this was unacceptable because it's freezing in our home, and our newborn is screaming every time we have to unwrap her from the blanket to change her. It was so cold in the house that we literally had ice forming on the windows inside our home (see pic). He wasn't so eager to come and fix the problem since he got his $1200 on Monday. He did not care that we were freezing or that our baby was not tolerating how cold it was inside the house. After multiple phone calls from my husband, I called him myself to explain the gravity of the situation. By this time, it was almost 7 pm. He was very flippant on the phone as I explained the gravity of the situation and the fact that our children and specifically my baby were not tolerating the cold and that he changed exorbitant prices on Monday and had not adequately fixed the problem. When they finally arrived by 7pm, they claimed it was a completely different problem and charged an additional $400 to fix it. Clearly, we will be canceling our maintenance plan with this company. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY WITH THIS COMPANY. My husband and I are both local anesthesiologists, and we plan to tell everyone we know to avoid this company. Cedric lacks integrity and is completely unprofessional. He was repeatedly apathetic after multiple calls and attempts to get him to address this situation in a timely fashion. Called Service Express after 5pm and were shocked that they were here within an hour. Hans was able to replace the capacitor in less than a half hour. House started to cool down right away. Just thrilled with the service! SE also installed our furnace about 5 years ago in an inconvenient crawl space, with no complaints on their part. They also installed a chimney liner thru a laundry room ceiling during a horrible rainstorm, along with replacing a hot water heater at the same time. They had to go in and out of the crawl space thru an opening in the deck, in the rain, while putting in the liner. Guys never complained! Great company to work with! They are very accommodating in less than ideal situations. Would give them 10 stars if I could! read more

I needed a new furnace. I called and left a message. They respond quickly. But I was unsure so I didn't get back with them. Started looking at other brands and got re-referred to them through a competitor! Maybe not a good sign? The Sales guy came out to "sell" me. He was on time. Seemed pleasant enough. In the end I didn't choose them, mostly because I wanted a product which they couldn't provide within the budgeting scope. They seemed "nice" but a bit too "eager" on the sales end. Their price was MUCH higher than a similar type of furnace from another company. Do research! Felt like the product offered didn't justify the price! Been using this company for a few years for my AC and heating needs and they have exceeded my expectations. My biggest recommendation is to ask for Cedric. This guy is a pro and has been in the business for a long time. I was having some AC issues recently and he quickly diagnosed the issue and was able to fix it. My AC unit is 14 years old and he was able to fix it so that I didn't have to replace the entire unit which would probably cost 3k+. I have used a few different heating and air companies since I have lived in Chicago for the last 8+ years but this is the best one yet. read more

I like the fact their techs were booties in my house and the techs are pretty professional. Beyond service, I will caution if you are doing any new installs there estimators/sales guys are not cheap. Had a new spacepak air conditioning system installed for the upper level of our home. Was installed incorrectly and not checked for leaks to the drain line. The line leaked and damaged our ceiling so they sent out another technician to fix that and check our lower level unit was not working after maintenance by Service Express. The tech comes and tells me that the install team screwed up and replaced the drain line. He also said the tech who came out to maintenance the lower level unit screwed up and didn't reattach a wire. GREAT. Second tech leaves..lower unit now working and thinking our upper level unit is now good to go. A day or so later the weather heated up and we turned on the air. That evening we had additional water damage to the ceiling and it was clear the upper unit was not fixed. I call the office and speak to Denise and schedule another 5 hour window for another tech to come. Frustrating because we are burning vacation time to be here. The third tech comes and explained that the entire unit was installed incorrectly and the result was water draining into the attic damaging the ceiling. He rigged a temp solution to stop the water but explained that they would need to come back and spend 4 to 5 hours correcting the issue. GREAT. My wife deals with Michelle on the reschedule. She explained that we did not want to take a 5th day off work to deal with this (1. first screwed up maintenance; 2. upper level screwed up install; 3. tech to fix the screwed up maintenance and install; 4. tech to fix what the last tech missed) and told them the we were available on 7/5. This frustrated Michelle who was upset that they would have to reschedule other appts to accommodate. She said she would work on it. Radio silence until this morning at 9:00 telling us they were on the way.. All of the technicians that we have dealt with have been straight forward about where the ball was dropped, apologized for the inconvenience and seemed focused on customer service. The office..not so much. Every time we called...after clearly identifying ourselves..we were told that they could schedule someone but that it would cost such and such. Each time we had to explain that we are dealing with issues that they caused and damage to our home. My wife asked multiple times to speak to management or ownership...nothing. Hoping this is the last of the issues as I am sick of burning time away from my office for this. In fairness I will say that the company is paying for the water damage repairs. read more

Cedric showed up at 8AM sharp, diagnosed my no heat problem within 5 minutes, repaired the problem and was done in a short time. That is what I call service and why I have used Service Express for existing and new construction HVAC needs for over 25 years. They come every spring and fall to service my HVAC needs per my service contract. Their service contracts are reasonable and keep the HVAC systems running at peak efficiency. When I added an addition, I pulled the HVAC out of the construction contract because their HVAC contractor told me my furnace and AC were to small. Service Express suggested zoning my heating to make it much more efficient. That was 12 years ago and it has worked very efficiently without having to replace my units. The pricing they use continually changes as if they make it up as the day comes, the office can never get you in and are extremely rude and b!*chy about it, the guy they sent to my house was not all there and changed the pricing on my invoice twice (little odd). Paul serviced my two A/C's this week at my high rise condo, one very old, one relatively new. The equipment is in fairly difficult spaces to access, but he moved swiftly, step by step from thermostats, filters, air handlers and condensers. Never missed a beat as he maneuvered through his maintenance sequence and the vintage building maze.. Wrote all data on the maintenance report and then explained the meaning of the numbers which indicated that even the old one was operating well. Thorough, efficient, and considerate man. These guys are the classic HVAC scammers. I called them with an AC problem a year ago, they said it needed a "re-charge" which AC systems are closed systems and only require additional freon if there's a leak. So they charged me for that and the AC stopped working a few days later. I told them, they came out, charged me again and said there was a clog in the pipes. I was also charged double for an "emergency visit" despite the fact that I previously paid for a problem that was no fixed. AC stopped working again a few days later, they said there must be a leak and it'd cost $2,000 to check for a leak or I could buy an entirely new AC system. First off, it doesn't cost $2,000 to check for leaks. Both the evaporator coil and condenser unit can easily be checked. They charged me for all visits and services despite the fact the problem was never fixed. They said they have to charge me anyway because they did service, regardless of whether or not the problem was solved. Total scam. I called another company in, the guy found a problem in the condenser within 15 minutes. Lesson learned on the scam artists known as Unique Indoor Comfort. Stay away. They will charge you for needless services and then try to solve the problem only by replacing your entire system. read more

Our boiler was leaking and our trusted plumber told me he did not work on boilers. I didn't have a lot of time to ask friends and neighbors for recommendations. I found the Unique service name and phone number on the boiler and decided to try. From start to finish it was a great experience. The service operator was friendly and polite. A service rep was at my house within the hour and was also polite and friendly. He quickly assessed the problem, showed me what was happening and had the needed part on his truck. Unique replaced an older steam boiler in my home. Steam boilers are a speciality, and Unique was very experienced with them. They sized it well (different from the old over-sized unit it replaced), and the installation (which took a full day) came out very well. The new boiler operates well and is much more efficient - saving $ on natural gas. I was very pleased with the Unique team. Steam boilers are not inexpensive, but Unique's price was fair, and the quality of the work was excellent. read more

Service Express failed to deliver the excellent service that I had relied on for 29 years in its prior business name of Unique Indoor Comfort. Here's why Service express failed and can't be trusted: On Friday July 1, 2016 I called them to fix a leak in the downstairs furnace humidifier. Their repairman said he fixed the leak. Unfortunately, the leak was even worse the next day when I checked it. I called to ask Service Express to stand behind their work and send the A team to fix the humidifier leak correctly. Service Express said they would charge me pricey weekend rates to fix this a second time. I told them that Unique Indoor comfort would have stood behind their service and come back to fix the humidifier leak issue correctly--without expecting me to pay weekend service penalties. Service Express service manager refused. So I hired another company to correctly fix the humidifier leak. That's why I will never trust Service Express to stand behind their work like their predecessor, Unique Indoor Comfort, had done for 29 years. read more

Let me start with,Steve is a great guy and very knowledgeable about boilers.However,my new boiler and baseboard installation was a hot mess.There were so many issues within the first 30 days that I choose to just mention the first and last one(of 5 problems!).Problem 5: tech came out during arctic blast within 30 days of the new install because of water on the floor near their pipe install. This was my first weekend call out.I told the rep that the work was just done so we both assumed it was warranty work.However the water wasnt sourced to their pipe. The tech couldnt tell me WHERE it was coming from so he billed me for $235! I gave him $135 (mind you,I thought this call out was free) and was going to pay the $100 when invoiced for the balance. The invoice came for $268 more!!!!!! Which I refused to pay and sent Steve a letter stating that I planned to pay a revised invoice,upon receipt, for $100 NOT $268.His office said that Steve was coming by,I guess i should have asked what for? He came,looked around,had his guy stuff some plastic near a joist to stop that noise,shook my hand smilingly and left.I got a new invoice for $268 with a note:"Steve said pay this." Then got the same $268 invoice with $17 finance charge !EVERYONE of the followup visits for service TOOK MY TIME, the install took three 8hr and one 12hr days. The letter,the visit by Steve,the phone calls over the bill,this review--all took my time.I plan to send $100 ONLY. SERVICE EXPRESS DOES NOT VALUE THEIR CLIENTS.The building is owned by my 91y/o dad so I had to get involved.The contract and payments were in dad's name.Which brings me to problem 1:The salesman came to my house the morning after the 12hr day,demanding payment. I asked for a walkthru first. In the middle of the walkthru,he stops and says:"why should I fix this stuff and we havent been paid?" Not believing my ears,I asked him to repeat his question and listen to himself.He YELLED the same question to me;whereupon,I YELLED back,"why should I pay you when you havent finished the work?" He then demanded to speak to my dad. Left without finishing the walkthru and went to my dad for the check--then problems 2 to 5 occurred.How they can expect us to pay add on charges to an existing bill ESPECIALLY SINCE THE SOURCE OF THE WATER ISSUE WASNT FOUND and NO repairs were made---is beyond me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I guess problem number 6 is now a finance charge,on an overbill??All I plan to pay,reluctantly,is $100 balance on original invoice. Unique came out in a pinch, they are the most professional and courteous company we've ever experienced in the HVAC realm. I called Unique after 5PM on a Friday, they were out at 7:30AM Saturday with portable heaters to use over the weekend. On Monday morning they were there to install the new HVAC, after the installation was complete Unique came back to make sure everything was operating properly. We called this company for preventative pre-season service. Our boiler was in good shape before Service Express. The company has now made 4 visits (a different technician each time) and the heat keeps going out. A very expensive part was replaced, which we believe was working but they took it with them and we have had no luck in getting the part back to test. Turns out, it was a $20 thermostat that was broken (but not tested). So far, we are out around $1,000 for a boiler that was not broken before Service Express touched it. Very disappointed. I had them come out and service my 2 ac units which were quoted at $117 a piece. The each needed a pound a Freon for (50$ or 60$) a piece and the bill was 598$. They told me each unit required 45 minutes of additional labor(@42.50$ per 1/4 hour) time to determine they needed Freon. Also the technician complained about have to work where there was mud and kept complaining about his job to Father. He was also not able to clean the upstairs unit because it was blocked by the wall. So I got 3/4 of a job for nearly $600. I called to discuss my bill and they did not offer any credits for future business or anything at all. I will not be using them in the next year or so when I have everything replaced. read more

I have a special cooling system for my house as it has hot water radiators. I got it from this company over 15 years ago when they were Unique Indoor. The cool air drops from vents in the ceiling - it's awesome! It has run like a work horse all these years with zero problems until Sunday in the midst of the horrible heat - the blower stopped blowing and was making some serious noise. I made some desperate attempts to find someone to repair it that night and then settled for the company who normally services my furnace to come out first thing in the morning. The guy they sent out was the polar opposite of the technician Service Express sent today. I won't waste time complaining about the incompetence of the other tech - only tell you how comforting it was, from the first moments the Service Express technician Paul was checking the unit, to know that this person knew exactly what he was doing. He was so knowledgeable, so adept at diagnosing the problem and fixing it quickly. He explained to me all about what went wrong and why and was so thorough. He even checked my filter and let me know I had the wrong kind in and replaced it with the correct one. I'm sorry I ever called anyone else, and never will again for my central air or my heating now. I have been grateful to this company since I purchased my air system from them many, many years ago and I can't say enough good things about the service I received today! He even asked if I had a coupon and waited while I searched (because I thought I saw one online yesterday) I didn't find one but the bill I paid was reasonable considering I know the job was done so skillfully and correctly.
