We had plans to be down in the Crossroads for the day and decided to grab lunch while there. We ended up at Mission Taco Joint. Parking can be a little hectic, but there is some free street parking available and a couple paid lots close by. Walking in pretty much exactly at the lunch hour on a Saturday, we were surprisingly seated right away. The decor is fun and casual and to me, at least, gave off some beachy vibes. The menu is basically a la carte items: tacos, burritos, tortas and a selection of sides you can order separately. I knew we were going somewhere else for drinks after, so as much as I wanted to try their margaritas I had to pass this time and went for an iced tea. There were a lot of items on the menu that I wanted to try, but I ended up ordering two tacos and a side of their street corn. The street corn was good, creamy and with a generous topping of cotija cheese, however it was missing the chili aspect and lime. A little tajin or something similar on top would have made it perfect. The habanero shrimp taco came with mango salsa and was delicious. For being habanero, it wasn't overly spicy. The only downside would be that there didn't seem to be that much shrimp in the taco. A little more shrimp and a little less topping would have been great. My second taco was unfortunately not what I ordered. I had asked for a carnitas taco and was brought a spicy chorizo taco. I like chorizo and I like spice so I just ate it, but do wish I had gotten the one I had wanted to try. The chorizo lived up to the spicy hype, between the meat itself and the pickled jalapenos, it packed a kick. The fresh avocado and pineapple salsa did help to cool it down though. Mission Taco Joint was in my list of local restaurants to try. Finally, I sat up a time on a Friday for lunch! The place was not very busy, so I was seated immediately. The atmosphere was modern and cool, and service was amazing. Mission Taco has a great selection of drinks, burritos, tacos, and sides. I ordered a Mezcal Margarita. I also ordered BBQ Duck, BLT Taco, Mango-Hop-Anero-Shrimp, and Baja Fish, and a side of Fries. I was also happy to see they serve Mexican Coke, which I love the taste, so I ordered one too! This establishment has gone beyond down hill. So many issues, so let me just start. Mind you, this used to be a place I visited 3x+ a month pre pandemic. 1. The manager is rude and beyond disrespectful. The hostess is rude. Customer experience and service is obviously not a priority. There was an issues over a CHAIR! Instead of a respectful manager coming over to try to resolve an issue, she proceed to tell us to leave. That is right people... no asking what the issue was, or no possible solutions. Just leave. Mind you it's a group of black adults. The manager came over also with all the hand movements and attitude. I have never in my life experienced something like this. 2. She (the manager) made the BIGGEST scene. Loudly talking and then getting validated by her peers and other employees. The whole restaurant was watching and weirdly she seemed to enjoy it. 3. Prices have increased lol. The happy hour tacos are now $2.50 vs $2. Plus drink sizes have decreased It's super unfortunate that I can't ever allow myself to enjoy this establishment again. First of all, Emma did a really great job as our server. I especially appreciated her, recognizing my hubby's birthday with churros. I had the Carne Asada and mango habanero shrimp taco. You can conclude from those factors that Mission Taco Joint is not some boring place. In fact, Mission Taco Joint is a place that gets creative with Mexican food. Tacos, burritos, and tortas are on the menu. The food is solid across the board. Carne asada is a meat option that you can never go wrong with. However, there are some interesting options on the menu if you want to branch out. The BBQ duck taco is my favorite menu item from there. I also really like the mango-hop-anero shrimp taco. The tacos are decently sized but loaded with fillings. The burritos are huge and super filling. I have tried The Brah'rito, and I was glad that I had shared that burrito with my friend. I have not tried the tortas, but they look pretty huge too. Get some street corn or churros if you want some small sides to go with your food. Otherwise, there are larger appetizers as well. With creative food, expect some creative drink options too. There is beer and tequila, but try one of the cocktails or tiki drinks. The prices are reasonable. The tacos are almost $4 each, but these are some tasty tacos that use flavors that you cannot find at just any taco joint. The service is decent, and the staff is pleasant. I was excited about this new joint in the Crossroads. Being a queso fan (ok, whore, I'm a queso whore), I'm always ready to try more of my favorite appetizer at new places. The chips were the thick-cut, corn, tortilla chips, which I know can be a deal breaker for some (my friends know who I'm calling out), but they were tasty and didn't crumble during the dipping, so I had no complaints. But, one can not live on queso alone. I was disappointed to learn chips and salsa aren't free, as if I needed to stuff my face with more chips, but let's face it, we've all become spoiled with the free chips and salsa from other places. I moved past this unfortunate discovery and ordered the Chicken Flautas. I found the service friendly, but the wait seemed pretty long for what I ordered. Even my iced tea took 20 minutes to make it to the table at the beginning of my lunch experience. The flautas weren't terrible, but plated a little over the top for me, drenched in so much sour cream and ancho bbq sauce that they were a little soggy and you couldn't even taste the chicken. All in all, I wasn't as wowed as my fellow Yelpers. Maybe, I didn't order right. Maybe, I needed a margarita. Mission Taco Joint is a hit! It's a twist on taquerias that you won't find all over town, well except for their other location in the South Plaza. This isn't like the taquerias on the Boulevard or in KCK with street tacos, chopped cilantro, onion and hot sauces. The menu is broader, with more of a mass-appeal. The tacos aren't as cheap as the authentic joints either, but they're worth the $3-4 each and add in creative elements. They charge for chips & salsa which bucks the trend, but I'm a sucker for it and it's always enjoyable nonetheless. The tacos here are pretty good, not going to lie! Each taco is served al la carte, and are priced around $3.50 each. I ordered chips and salsa to start and it was definitely not your run of the mill.
