    Smoked Salmon Pasta
    Julia R.

I had a nice evening at Sets. Everything was good, however, in my opinion nothing was great. I came here on a Friday night with a friend, and we were sat inside (live music was outside- and the artist was actually very good). There was no wait to be seated inside. My friend got the grilled salmon, I got the smoked salmon, pasta, and both dishes were just fine. My friend mentioned that her lemonade tasted like dishwater. The service was fairly slow, it took a while for our server to come take your order, a while for our food to be delivered (it was cold by the time it made it to us), and quite some time for her to come back to take our cards to pay the bill. We were hoping to make it up for Double Peak for the sunset, but because of the delay, we ended up missing it. I do really like the location of this restaurant, and would definitely be willing to try it again, although I was not overly impressed by my first go around

    Great coffee and huge cups!

As we live near by, we wanted to try this restaurant for few years. As it's a holiday weekend, it wasn't too packed for brunch. So we finally decided to go for brunch. We were welcomed by the staff at the bar. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. We ordered coffee first. It was great coffee and the cups are huge! I got the stuffed French toast plate which comes with Orange Vanilla Mascarpone stuffed (which they were out of) French Toast, bacon, eggs, hashbrowns and fruit plate. I got my plate without the bacon but after informing our waitress, we got the bacon soon after. The eggs were okay, the French toast without the stuffing was good, the bacon seemed to be swimming in fat. I had to pat it dry several times to give some to my dog. The hashbrowns weren't my cup of tea. It was dry crushed potato patties that were like eating a rubber band. The first fruit I tried to put in my mouth smelled like fish. I basically ate quarter of the toast, one egg and one bite of bacon as nothing really stood out. Quite honestly, I lost my appetite from the fish smelling fruit. My husband got the Cast iron skillet veggies. He enjoyed his food. As he loves potatoes, he doesn't mind how they're prepared. Our waitress and other staff were very pleasant and professional. I never told them about my dislikes as I had lost my appetite and they were rather busy. They may have been having an off day. I'll probably give it another try for dinner and see if it's any different from today's experience. I love the fact that they're dog friendly.

Now that's an honest portion! Great place! Staff and food are amazing!

Baby back ribs, wicorn and sweet potato fries. The meat was perfectly cooked and fell off the bone.

Tuesday night means Burger Night at SETS and that means excellent burgers (with a ton of fries or tots) for 9 bucks. It is a great deal. Now, word to the wise: you don't get to select one of their gourmet burgers off the regular menu and get it for $9. You get a "regular" burger with veggies on top (tomato, lettuce, and onion) along with fries or tots. However, the regular burger is EXCELLENT. It's big and juicy, the bun is nice and soft, and the veggies are incredibly fresh. And if you prefer tots, they are insanely crunchy and delicious. They've got live music certain nights of the week and plenty of TVs for sports viewing. They never lack for waitstaff, either. Really good food here.

First time visiting here, even though we are San Elijo residents. The staff was super friendly, helpful, and attentive. Food, overall, was very good! We had the firecracker shrimp, fish & chips, and short ribs. Firecracker shrimp were really good with the sauce and crunch bits -- rice was a nice bonus as well. The short ribs were pretty good, although the mashed potato's (advertised as jalapeño and cheddar) were nice, but I didn't get ANY heat from the jalapeño's, nor any jalapeño flavor. They were good mashed potatoes, but just didn't live up to the "jalapeño and cheddar" as advertised on the menu. The short ribs themselves tasted nice with the sauce. They could have been a bit more tender, but still very good and I'd re-order again. The fish & chips were good as well; nice plump fish and the fries were good. The batter could have been a bit crisper on the first, but we would still order it again. Overall, good dinner and we'll be back for sure.

    Chicken tinga tostada

Picked this place out for my birthday dinner recently with my mom. We were able to pick where we wanted to sit which was nice. The server was great, we did have to wait a little bit longer at the end but there were more tables seated by then so we weren't bothered by it. I ordered the ceviche tostada but received a chicken tinga tostada instead. The server realized the mistake and we were brought the correct tostada and we got to try the chicken tostada. Broth were really good almost hard to choose a favorite between the two. For my entree I ordered the short rib and was surprised by the amount of food on my plate. It tasted delicious too. The Monday night game was on but it wasn't too loud and I really enjoyed the music playlist that had in the background. Overall enjoy this place.

Now let's talk food... the brisket was out of this world! Tender, flavorful, and just the right amount of smokiness. I even had to snap a "before" pic of the plate--and let's just say the "after" pic didn't survive because it was THAT good! They were out of dessert during our visit, but I'll definitely be back to try that cinnamon and lemon pound cake that customers around us were raving about. Captain's Log -- Stardate 21,596…read more Twenty-one thousand, five hundred and ninety-six rotations around this magnificent sun have I endured -- each one sharpening my palate, steeling my resolve, deepening my reverence for the extraordinary. On this day, the winds of destiny carried my queen and me through the fog-draped canyons of Spring Valley, drawn by whispers ancient and savory, toward a hallowed establishment known simply as Bankhead. Mississippi-style cooking. The very words conjured visions of forgotten kingdoms. Make it so. We materialized within a modest strip mall -- unassuming as an unclaimed planet -- yet the moment those doors parted, I understood with crystalline Vulcan certainty we had not merely entered a restaurant. We had crossed the threshold into living mythology. David and Rose -- not merely owners, not merely cooks -- but keepers of a sacred flame ignited by their extraordinary mother in the 1970s right here in San Diego. Their lineage is not carried in blood alone, but in smoke and seasoning, in cast iron and cornmeal, in a love for craft no warp drive could outrun. I canna' change the laws of physics -- but these descendants have bent them entirely. David approached us with the warmth of a thousand suns -- laughing, storytelling, weaving us into this family as though we always belonged. He is no mere host. He is a Counselor of the highest order, reading the soul of every guest, delivering what the spirit requires. In his presence, one does not feel like a customer. One feels like crew. Then there was Betty, whose presence carried the quiet authority of a seasoned admiral -- dignified, welcoming, the kind of soul that anchors a ship in turbulent seas. And Zai -- that magnificent young warrior -- commanding the register with Starfleet precision while summoning miracles from that kitchen alongside Rose. I watched her and thought: Today is a good day to dine. This crew operates in perfect formation. Resistance to their hospitality? Futile. Now hear me when I tell you of the provisions. I, your Captain, did what any commander worth his commission must do -- I ordered with the fire of a Klingon and the logic of a Vulcan. I explored nearly the entire frontier of that menu, and what I discovered shook the very hull of my expectations. The beef ribs. By the Great Bird of the Galaxy. These were not merely ribs. These were relics. Carved from some ancient and glorious tradition, smoked to a depth that defies measurement, falling from the bone with a reverence that made me set down my fork and simply breathe. Mind-bending. Dimensional. The kind of food that makes a traveler question whether he has ever truly eaten before this moment. They do not simply fill your stomach -- they reprogram your memory. And then -- the Mississippi catfish. Crisp. Golden. Sovereign. Dressed in a crust that crackled like the opening of a long-sealed archive, its flesh within tender as mercy itself. This was not a side dish. This was a declaration. Soul food is not merely cuisine -- it is communication. A language spoken in grease and grace, in heat and heritage. "Infinite diversity in infinite combinations" -- the Vulcan masters understood this truth. Bankhead lives it. Every plate told the same story: a family refused to let their legacy die. They carried it from Mississippi soil, through decades of change, through the shifting tides of a city that rarely sits still, and planted it here in Spring Valley -- like a monument that earns its place not through banners, but through the undeniable power of truth on a plate. You are not merely eating here. You are tasting 1970s San Diego. You are tasting a mother's hands. You are tasting sacrifice and celebration and the stubborn, glorious insistence that some things must not be lost. "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." Spock spoke those words in cold logic. But here at Bankhead, they take on warmer meaning: every soul who walks through that door is met -- abundantly, joyfully, without reservation. No one leaves hungry. No one leaves unchanged. To those who feel the pull of the unknown, I issue my final command: Set your course for Spring Valley. Find the strip mall. Walk through those doors. Tell them Captain 619 sent you -- and watch as the universe rearranges itself into something that feels, impossibly, like home. To David, Rose, Betty, and Zai -- you have done what the greatest explorers of any age have done. You have taken the vast, echoing mystery of where we come from and made it something a stranger can hold in their hands, taste with their tongue, and carry forever in their chest. There are not five lights. There are not four. There is only one truth in that kitchen -- and it is magnificent. My queen and I depart richer than any treasure map could promise. Live long and prosper. End log -- Captain 619 Voyager. Taster of Worlds. Loyal to the flavors that refuse to be forgotten.
