well first, my friend got food poisoning from their spaghetti and meatballs and spent the evening (and the next day) vomiting. i got the carbonara - which is a pretty standard dish that you'd think would be fine - but it has a cream sauce? carbonara is supposed to be made with just noodles, pancetta, egg, and parm. that's the whole dish. it looked and tasted like they had dumped bertolli's alfredo sauce on top. my third friend got the pumpkin ravioli... and they were good? best of luck out there lol. read more

On a snowy DC night, we opted to walk here and get take out. The process was smooth and easy. The staff were super nice. We were asked if we wanted bread, etc. Everything was packaged perfectly. No styrofoam, no leaks or messes. The carbonara pasta I ordered was delicious. Not too heavy of a sauce. Good-sized chunks of bacon. Plenty of flavor and nicely balanced. In short... DO NOT GO! I have lived in DC for a number of years now and visited countless restaurants in the 14th street corridor, amongst other places. I would say that my visit to Sette Osteria on Mother's Day was the worst dining experience I've had in DC to date. Four of us visited this restaurant for brunch to include my Mother. Sette Osteria was fairly empty with only four other parties appearing to be dining. (which was probably telling unto itself) We placed a very simple order of entrées only. Over one and a half hours later the food arrived. Three different times we were told that our food was arriving momentarily. It became so uncomfortable for everyone, so much so that the server began to avoid our table or make eye contact all together. Once the food finally arrived the server could not stop apologizing. The server felt incredibly bad and expressed this to us on multiple occasions. Not one time did the manager approach us to apologize for the experience. In fact, it was difficult to tell who the manager actually was. Believe it or not, this experience was not limited to the lack of a timely delivery of our meal. The story continues to include asking for the same drink four times without delivery, not to mention that the food was nothing to write home about. I could go on but I hope I've sufficiently cautioned everyone that this would not be my first choice for any dining experience in the city to say the least. read more

I also love the lasagna, and for a lighter dish the veal piccata. Food was good. Service was not good. We arrived - a group of 6, yes, I know but - and were told we couldn't sit at X, Y and X tables because we didn't have a reservation; the restaurant was 85% empty. They put us at a compromise table. Ok, fine. After +10 minutes of making eyes with the staff, I flagged someone down and asked for bread for the table and ordered multiple bottles of wine. Our bottles of white wine finally arrived, barely chilled, but they did give us a table-side chilling bucket. And excellent wine glasses. I do recommend what we ordered, Pinot Grigio. +5 minutes the bread arrived and we ordered our food. Water was refilled frequently, which was definitely appreciated. At a decent wait time, food arrived but the veal/potatoes were cold and the sauce congealed. The fish was supposed to be bone-free, but was not; it was tasty, but could have been a warmer temp. The rest of us had pasta and it was all very, very good. However, we were told the portions were very large and we're recommended to split it - I strongly disagree and I regret splitting my penne. The veal came back reheated. The next bottle of wine arrived and it was chilled to perfection. After we all finished our meals, we waited 5-10 minutes for our empty plates to be cleared. We have been sitting here long enough for me to write this review and no one has approached us to offer another bottle or suggest dessert or ask if we want the check. Everyone has disappeared. Cozy and delightful! Ordered a simple margherita flatbread, and the rest of the table ordered the carbonara and steamed mussels. Everything was on point! The margherita flatbread is simply well done. It's so simple that you look for the quality of ingredients, and I was very happy with how it all came out! The carbonara was also delicious. Usually, restaurants skimp on doing a proper carbonara and rely on cream. But not here, they made it authentically and correctly, with melted egg and LOTS of cheese. Get ready to have a cheesy breath when you leave after eating a bowl of these! The mussels were tasty but I don't think there was enough sauce to go with it. I wish there's more! So the top steamed mussels were not as tasty as the ones in the bottom of the pot. Fill it up, please! Overall, very happy with Sette - totally coming back! read more

My hubs and I came here for a date night after we foolishly tried to hit up some other more popular 14th street spots expecting less than a 2 hour wait. We were grateful they had a table available without a long wait. The restaurant is nice, it was pretty full and had a good vibe. We ordered the mussels and clams to start, and for our entrees I had the shrimp and pesto pasta, and my hubby had the fettuccine bolognese. Within 6-7 minutes of ordering our pastas arrive and I said no no no, ha! I told the runner nope, we haven't gotten our appetizer, and we don't want our entrees yet. He took them away and a minute later our waiter showed up and told us he forgot to put in our mussels/clams, if we still wanted them. We said yeah, we do! (hubby is a big fan). Anyway, this was a bit of a wrinkle for the meal, we ended up waiting a while for the app. The food was alright, not amazing but not bad, just sort of middle of the road. read more

Food is edible. And service is subpar. It's always nice to see housemade pasta...even better when it's done well. That is not the case here. The pasta was edible, and lacked flavor. Go to another pasta place in town. And as for service, the waitress was kind enough to reach over my food to refill my water, but the table cloth covering the water pitcher started dripping water onto my food. It wasn't water falling from the container...it was the drip, drip, drip from the table cloth in the heat. I don't know if that cloth was clean or not. I just know it was gross. I let the manager know so that they could avoid this in the future and was dismissed. They said, "It's just water." I came into sette this weekend with my boyfriend, it was pretty busy but we were still able to get seated. I had the fettuccine bolognese and he had the sea bass, both were amazing. Our server Kate was very nice and the manager Alex helped us out with food and drink recommendations. Food was pretty good had the mussels and fried calimari . Vodka sauce with salmon was tasty . Also wife had penne margarita. Which was also good . Service was also good . The cons where servings need to be a little more . And if management is reading this your restrooms were gross and filthy . Need to be cleaned and maintained throughout the day . Put a little investment and time in them they need it desperately. This says a lot about an establishment. For the prices you are charging this should not be a problem . If I could give less than 1 star, I would. My brunchmates and I feel sick after eating here. At first we thought the food was simply bland, but eventually realized that we all actually feel nauseous. I ordered the filet mignon Benedict, and my partner ordered the breakfast sliders. I sent back my steak because it was undercooked, and that's NEVER my complaint. I LOVE a good, medium rare piece of beef, but something was off. It was chewy and gamey, and I thought it had been undercooked. When I got it the second time, I realized that the flavor was one of old meat. My partner's sliders were comparable to fast food burgers. Granted, this is an Italian restaurant, but their brunch offerings are what they are, and if there had been better options, we would have ordered them. As a restaurant, if you're going to offer a dish, it should be edible. Or at least not rotten. I will absolutely never go here again. If you choose to, I would avoid the steak, burgers, Bloody Mary, and brunch flatbread. However, I would recommend that you go somewhere else entirely. Ugh. We both feel sick. read more

Come here for food, not for service. I'm always embarrassed to go out in DC with friends from other cities (Philly, NYC, Miami in particular) simply because DC just can't seem to get service right! We have some delicious options all around the city - including this one - but service always seems to be mediocre. My friends and I went in for a quick lunch on Sunday. The place is a bit noisy for brunch but not unbearable. We split a bowl of carbonara and each got different dishes. I had the chicken milanese which was great with greens and tomatoes right on top. My friends said their steak and crab cake sandwich were both good. Seriously, good Italian food. But I couldn't believe how slow the service was! I tracked it, it took our server 10 minutes to pick up our bill once we laid it down with payment. I mean, do you want our money? You couldn't flag anyone down, and the one time someone came over to check on us we were in deep conversation. I don't care about being interrupted, but just checking on us once over the course of an hour, and not even after the food came out, is lame. Good al dente pasta with great options, terrible terrible service. When there are cheaper options with decent Italian dishes and better service, you shouldn't get more than 2 stars. read more

After a bad experience at another restaurant earlier in the night, my friends and I made a reservation to celebrate a birthday for our party of 11 on a Saturday night. They were really nice about accommodating us, which was amazing since we had made the reservation about 30-45 mins before we arrived. They even cut a cake for us that we had brought (for a fee)! We got a few carafes of the red sangria, which was really good, and I ordered the prosciutto flatbread as my entree. It had the perfect prosciutto to cheese ratio, but I think the one thing that would have elevated it was some fresh basil or arugula on top. The bread was also delicious! Went here for brunch with 5 people total. Three of us got there early and they let us take our table and start ordering drinks (most other places make you wait for the whole party so this was awesome!). The service was amaaaaazing. We got the bottomless mimosas/bellinis and our glasses were never empty for more than like... 20 seconds. And even though there's a "2 hour limit" I'm pretty sure we stayed a bit longer and they didn't rush us to pay the bill or leave. Our waiter even kept pouring us drinks after we paid and was so pleasant the whole time! Everyone really enjoyed their food. The drinks were really strong and not 80% juice like some other places give you when you order mimosas. The weather was nice so the whole place was open, giving it a really nice feel. We had a Madison event at Sette. They made everything easy, their PR agent Cassie Ricalade was so easy to work with! She set up a private room, ensured we had happy hour specials, and even had the bartender make us our very own cocktail. The food was great, and the HH is a steal. The patio is lovely. I's very rare that I encounter an awful place. I've encountered disappointing food. I've encountered disappointing service. Though I've never experienced such ill preparedness. Starting with the only thing that I'd give 1 star, the food. Yes, the Cannelloi di Ricotta Espinaci was satisfying. It wasn't anything that would make Sette Osteria memorable, but filled my stomach. My real surprise comes from how long it took to get my food (about an hour) and how our waitstaff (not waitress, waitstaff) just didn't know what has happening in their restaurant. We ordered a bottle of wine. They were out. When asking for another recommendation similar to the one that was out, they didn't have anything to offer. When offering parmesan cheese, it took 15 minutes to return with it. When asking for the checks, they asked if we needed the paper copy or if we could just hand over our credit cards. So no, I will not be back. Though I hope Sette can get their staff up and running so they can focus more on their food. read more

Look, everyone knows the Sette Osteria in Dupont is not high quality food or service. Their only selling point is that they have survived 10 years (since 2004!), but that doesn't make it good. Dupont is dying out and there are few even decent places to eat around there. This place will struggle on 14th, where there is much stronger competition. Remember, the former M cafe with the horrific blue awning is from the same owners/managers, all they did was change to a more familiar brand. Its the same place that crashed and burned last time around. I went in last night for their 50% off special, as I wanted to see what they built and I was willing to check it out for those prices. I walked in around 8 and was rudely greeted with the news that they were completely full for the evening. The smug host dismissed me and my friend as if we would not be necessary for the success of this mediocre establishment. I mean, you're open until 11, don't tell me you have a 3 hour wait for cookie-cutter Italian food. I'm sure he was emboldened by the fact that the place was packed, but I assure you sir, it was the discounted rate and the media blitz you put on to fill the place. I love this place. I have never bothered to leave a review of a restaurant on Yelp, but the service at Sette Osteria 14th was so wonderful, I had to share. First, I have been here twice. The first time for a small Sunday brunch of 3 people. The service and food was pretty good. The second time is what really showed how great this restaurant was. I organized a birthday brunch for a friend on short notice (less than a week). Sette Osteria 14th accommodated my reservation of about 25 people with no problems. To give context, I called two other restaurants and was nearly laughed off the phone for even suggesting it. During the brunch, they made bottomless drinks optional, kept track of who ordered what and split all the checks. The GM insisted on letting them split the checks to make it easier for us. Then they gave a delicious tiramisu cake with a lit candle out of nowhere for the birthday girl! To top it all off, the GM was so kind to take our group photo outside the restaurant (yes all 25 of us in our tipsy, drunken state). The food was also delicious. I got pancakes my first visit and French Toast with eggs and sausage links on my second. I enjoyed it a lot, and their desserts were delicious. A number of us also ordered the Nutella flatbread. The tiramisu and Nutella flatbread tasted great, not too sweet but the right amount of richness. Others who attended the brunch also complimented the food and service. Everyone enjoyed their meals and loved the ambiance of the restaurant. I highly recommend them as a brunch spot, especially for large parties. read more

Went for brunch on a Sunday with my dad. He ordered the French toast and I had the baked eggs. Both were extremely disappointing and lacking in flavor. The French toast was made with sliced bread and came with 2 tiny slices. The baked eggs came in a watery tomato sauce that tasted like it came straight from a can and only had one piece of toast to dip in (I ended up asking for more toast because you really can't eat this dish unless you have bread with it). I've never used yelp to write something negative but here we go - my boyfriend and I went here for Valentine's Day and was floored by the rude remark made by of one of the bussers. We had a 9:30 reservation, paid by about 10:30, and were finishing our drinks. I asked our server if it would be more convenient for her if we moved to the bar but she said no and to take our time. At about 11pm one of the bussers, I guess assuming that Spanish isn't one of the most widely understood languages in the US, told another busser in Spanish to "give us a bunch of balloons so we would just get out". Here's a tip - if you don't want people to take their time and enjoy their Valentine's Day dinner reservations, then don't take reservations at 9:30pm. It's not like we hung around there for 3 hours past closing. We absolutely won't be back. read more

It is pricey. $20 appetizer menu should be enough of a gauge. I like the open air and high window space. The seating booths are a little close. It has the feel of being a reformed restaurant in this space. But, it provides a counter point to the usual familial gathering feel of eating Italian. The food itself was really good. I haven't had Chicken Parm in a long while. It was delicious. Not too thick a breast, not too soggy a breading and really a nice serving size. The Calamari was delicate and perfectly fried. It feels like some of the more trendy places are now incorporating family style dishes. I don't think Sette is quite there. But, the mint Mojito's were just the right temperature. read more

First of all: the food is entirely and utterly wonderful. The drinks are wonderfully crafted, balanced, and enjoyable to the point of giddy delight! Off that note, we've been coming to this specific establishment as a collective for over a year (wear that pink in the corner on Sundays!). We have loved the service and have always been satisfied to the point of fault...which we thank everyone of the past for allowing us such indulgence and splendor. You have been entirely too wonderful. To elaborate off of that further: our server was THE most delightful, gracious, and energetic sever I have ever had the pleasure of being engaged with. Personally, I adored her beyond reason and her personality was the most appreciated embodiment within the space. Unfortunately, I am now brought to the point where I must address the reason for this "two star" review: We booked a reservation almost a week in advance. We arrived on time and were told our table was not quite ready. After forty minutes, with no condolences, sympathies, or empathy, we were brought to a cramped small in the corner of the restaurant; as makeshift tables with lipstick stained glasses formed our seated assignment. We have loved this place because of the food, the service, and the bottomless "boozy brunch" advertised streetwide. The advertised period of "boozy brunch" is a written period of indulgence for 2 hours. After once again waiting 40 minutes - nearly an hour - after our reservation we were seated. After a little over an hour of incredible service we were informed that the bottomless service - all 16 of us had paid for - would be terminated as 4 o'clock was upon us. What I understand is that city ordinances and what you may or may not have a license for, dictates your capability of service. Never would I ask Sette Osteria for any exception or exclusion of DC law. What surprises me is that after such faithful and committed patronage, they would be so quick to cut us by almost an hour of terms of promised service - that brought us to the establishment. The service and care which brought us there in the first place! Was cut short in forced adherence to managements orders. It is disheartening to be in a place with such amazing service that the sole and only focus - as indicated by the management and senior staff - is fiscal gain. While we love your servers and staff, it is painful to ever consider supporting such corruptly consumed management. read more
