Walking into Seven Grand in LA is an experience from the start. You are immediately transported into what feels like a classic, hidden refuge away from the busy city streets. The ambiance has a perfect speakeasy vibe with its dim lighting and relaxed atmosphere, making it an ideal spot to just hang out and grab a quality drink. The cocktail program here is absolutely phenomenal. I am pretty picky when it comes to whiskey, and since Manhattans are my absolute favorite, my expectations were high. They mixed an incredible Manhattan that was perfectly balanced with the right sweet vermouth, and their Old Fashioneds are crafted with an attention to detail that really lets the spirits shine through. We also ordered a few Paper Planes, and they were dangerously good, hitting that perfect sweet and sour note that makes you want to immediately order another round. It is not just the incredible drinks that make this place stand out, but the exceptional service from the bartenders. They are super knowledgeable and treat craft cocktail making like a true art form, all while keeping the vibe laid-back and welcoming. It's really hard to write this review and not sound like an out of touch whisky snob, but this is one place a whisky (and a whiskey) snob should thrive. Having been here many times over the past decade, I've discovered some great bourbons, scotches, and had some great cocktails. But those days are unfortunately in years past. In a place that prides itself in its whisky, the bartenders are sorely lacking in their knowledge around their own bar. With an extensive selection, I don't expect them to know everything, but bartenders not knowing what is meant by a neat pour (straight out of the bottle into the glassware, no ice, and not mixed) was unexpected. I'm getting the impression that while they still mix old fashioneds, a scotch such as Ardbeg is now an unusual and baffling request. I've been here a handful of times in the past few months, and it can be lively or dead, but it's now just any other bar. If you want a fun cocktail you can find anywhere else, this place will do, but unfortunately it's lost what has separated this bar from any of the other bars in dtla. read more

Divey, cool bar with a speakeasy vibe. Pool table, an outdoor space where you can smoke (unfortunately, but if you're into that), and ample seating in a dark space with funky decor. Awesome music playing during our visit. Mostly 80's alternative, and somr classic rock mixed in. Music was a bit overly loud, but it's probably perfect when the place is packed. We went at about 5:30 on a Moday and it was dead, but a couple hours later, as we were leaving, more were coming in. Cocktails were excellent and bartender was very helpful. As Grand As it gets. I've been stopping in to Seven Grand for well over a decade now O.O and I still love this top notch whiskey bar lounge in Downtown Los Angeles. From fun nights out, special occasions, whiskey tastings, exploring the speakeasy... playing some pool, enjoying libations, taking in live music, perfect outings on the patio, the occasional cigar. So many great memories and experiences created here including some awesome date days with my other half. If stopping in for the first time you'll discover S.G. on 7th and Grand Avenue with a door person usually always at the bottom of the staircase just outside of the restaurant/cocktail bar Zaya (which has been many incarnations including Bar CDMX, V and Mas Malo). Provide them with a valid ID, as anybody over 21 should have a valid form of identification on them at all times, not just for driving or access to 21+ events or establishments, but for safety. And Seven Grand cares about everyone and their safety. They value their staff as much as their customers. And it shows in every way from thoughtful space in all directions, great pool tables, a whiskey, bourbon and scotch curated cocktail menu, even some good brew/beer. Awesome hallways with cabinet lockers, the cleanest restrooms, great dim dark warm lighting, fun fixtures and true DTLA vibes that feel old timey yet also very modern. Seven Grand is open to all and all are welcome. Stellar daily happy hour 4pm to 8pm. I love a good $10 Toki Highball at 5pm, but you can't go wrong with their classic old fashion also. All the bartenders are incredible as well as personable. S Grand is open every day from 4pm until 2am. Loads of lots close by as well as the Metro station at 7th and Metro. Though the trains currently stop just a little after midnight. Rideshare is also your friend, which now includes Waymo in the area. Discover Seven Grand also in San Diego, Austin or Denver. Fantastic bar located on the second floor that offers many craft cocktails and has the perfect whiskey bar vibe. I stopped by on a Saturday night to order a cocktail and the Irish coffee was fantastic!! Our bartender Leo was super friendly and crafted a killer drink. When I arrived there was a live band playing and the bar had a nice chill energy that makes me want to return. Let me start by saying I freakin love the food. It was slow and some things got confused but it was good. My husband brought me here for Valentines Day. So, to be fair, it wasn't a normal day. It was packed with people with high expectations. I kinda get why wires may have gotten crossed. The crab cake was delicious. I wanted more. STEPH JUDGEMENT: A downtown stalwart that's still doing it. I didn't realize I'd never reviewed this place! I used to come here fairly often in the early 2010s, but hadn't been in years. The hubby and I were doing a downtown staycation and decided to step in for happy hour. It was pretty much as I remembered: the bar is upstairs, with the Scottish hunting lodge theme intact--dark walls and mounted deer heads everywhere. The bartender, nattily attired in a vest, was friendly and efficient. The $11 happy hour old fashioneds were well-made and delicious. There's a guy checking your ID at the front entrance. He's friendly. He let us know there were several other seven grand locations to include San Diego and Denver. Walk up the stairs and it's a mix of a pub feel but with more whiskey. Don't think this place is similar to a whiskey library type of place. We came here on Valentine's Day and it was an awesome spot. They had a happy hour menu, a Valentine's Day menu where if you bought a certain drink you got a free macaroon and got to sit in a special section, and their usual whiskey menu. I totally understand why my friend brought me here and why I should have loved it. A whiskey bar that has stayed strong in DTLA (before people were thinking about trying to repopulate the area) with a cool build out, historic flourishes, moody lighting, and a dearth of influencer-type folks is very much in line with my tastes. Strong drinks and a distinctive POV will always make me a fan of a cocktail bar. Don't just sling back drinks for the heck of it; have something to say! My friend understood the assignment. I should have loved it. I did not. 1.) The crowd. Despite there being a dearth of influencer-types more concerned with their socials than their beverage, the place was a$$-to-elbows crowded. Even snagging a small table on a Sunday night in late Spring wasn't enough to insulate us from being crowded and pushed to and fro when going to the restroom or bar (more on that). To my own personal horror, Typhoid Mary and her friends were a table over. I think they sneezed and coughed more than they drank. No me gusta. 2.) Inconsistent drinks. If you're a whiskey bar, this Kentuckian/Tennessean is going to expect some things. My Bait And Switch was a hit (and a warning?). Served in a coupe, this blend of Japanese whisky, yellow chartreuse, maraschino, and Cocchi Americano was a revelation. I would never have thought to put any of the ingredients together but it was a whisky-forward, thoughtful drink with depth. I was extremely impressed. And then I ordered an Old Fashioned. Hands down, it was one of the worst I've ever had. Again, remember: Kentuckian. Tennessean. How in the world can you score a home run with an inventive drink and completely whiff a standard -- especially that one... in a whiskey bar? 3.) Horrendous service. Maybe the whiffed Old Fashioned had another explanation. My buddy -- who favors Bradley Cooper more than, say, Michael B. Jordan -- scored the first round of drinks. Despite the crowd, he did so pretty quickly and effortlessly. When I went to get round two, I waited and waited and waited. I was front and center in the bar and the blond bartender refused to wait on me. People to the left and right of me (arriving after me) came and went and there I stood. It got so bad/long that my friend came to the bar to see what was going on. He posted up two people to my left... and was waited on immediately. When that happened, he pointed to me and asked why he was being served before I was and pointed out how long I was waiting. The bartender hemmed and hawed a response as my mild-mannered professor friend lost his mind. The bartender made up excuses that didn't hold water. Another bartender, overhearing what happened, apologized to me and told me to let her handle my order. The original bartender interjected and offered to get our round 'on him.' I shouldn't have agreed but I did... and I received the aforementioned Old Fashioned. Lesson learned. Message received. read more
