I am of Mexican Descent but I embrace the eclectic mix of American practices first, and then Mexican traditions. Like I would opt to attend a concert in the Disney Concert Hall before a Corrido, 100% percent of the time. Nevertheless, I still feel a connection to Mexican culture that endures. This connection, I felt was respected, when I saw Coco. I know, I know, Coco was an animated project that literally gave caricature form to Mexican traditions. In doing so, however, it gave fresh vibrancy with color and detail, cultural songs that are not tired, and a story that centralized the the spirit of Mexican lore with respectable flare. In contrast, Las Perlas had aspects that, in my opinion, caricaturized Hispanic culture. So let us start the review by exploring the contrast of what seemed fresh and what seem stale, at least in one Yelpers opinion. What has withstood the test of time, is the tequila selection and how it is displayed in a shelf. All the bottles are stacked by size, color, and together say- this is the house that tequila build, sample different kinds but just use some caution or else your face might know the pound of the floor. I also noticed (and clipped) a picture of a ladder that can be used to climb to get the bottles from the top. So literally effort and climb is required to reach the top shelf booze of the place. The focal point of the tequila shelf was an image of the Virgin Mary. For me, this is where the situation becomes a bit more complex but not necesirarily in a cool way. The Virgin Mary is the patron saint of Mexico, and on her birthday celebrations and pilgrimages abound to celebrate her life. I have been to LA's Cathedral and her famous and she is celebrated by lights that form into red roses, and by patrons who go seeking her favor by reverence. Using her image to show that she is blessing tequilas or their pure intent seems to minimize or twist her purpose. Like do people really want connect the reverence owed to the mother of a deity to an item that is used to lubricate a party? Maybe. I have heard that Dyonosus- Greek God of Wine-- sponsored some great parties through libations. I know that I might have dived deep into my thoughts here but what was one stylish and novel can now be considered un-modern. On another quick example, we see Campesinos (field workers) tend to the leafs that give tequila to the world. These workers were doing back breaking labor, one can feel the heat and soreness of the workers just by seeing the mural. And in the clip two girls are using their phone, to keep up with modern demands--- whether that be posting, influencing or moving stock funds around. Thus, in my opinion, the picture of laborers tending fields is one that should be balanced as Mexican's should no longer just be shown as braceros and laborers, even in this bar. I came around 9 and this bar was sort of crowded, the party was starting to build. I sat and drank their La Fresa Loca drink, with vodka instead of tequila. Special nod to their menu for being loteria-tablet-like. The drink was delicious, refreshing, and it made me feel like I was drinking a fun and fruity cocktail. I paid for two in advance then closed my card. They allowed for that. As soon as I finished one, I could order a new one. That was kind of neat, and I never had tried the strategy before. It helped me get my drinks in before the crowd accumulated. This is definitely a party spot, and I can see how it hits hard later in the evening. If you are the type of person that gets distracted with decorations and their place and message in modern times, like me, one might over think. But if one just wants to party hard with tequila and some tacos, and ladies, and gents, then this place handles. read more

They do have a patio with seating where many go for a quick smoke. Def not my vibe, but it seems to be a nice spot for a more lowkey or chill hang. Stopped by on Sunday, 11/02/25 for the first time. My boyfriend heard about this hype place and wanted to check this place out. Ordered the following from their Happy Hour Menu (every day from Open - 7pm, Tuesday all day): - 1 margarita = $9 - 1 beer (Tecate) = $6 - 1 shot of tequila = $3 Very small inside so if you are very claustrophobic then this is not the vibe for you. Additionally, this place is dark and a bit old fashioned; it really looks like staff do not clean this place often. The restrooms looked very dirty and sketch. Last night at Perlas I saw two different instances where the security guards wrongfully accused patrons of doing something they didn't do. In the back patio near an exit door I saw a security guard with short dreads letting people in when they banged on the door. Another security guard who was tall and had his hair slicked back then accused a male patron sitting near my group of friends of letting people in through the back. The patron told him that wasn't him and to check the footage or pictures they had. The security guard checked again and confirmed it wasn't him. A few minutes later the tall security guard and another with a septum ring went up to another patron who was with the original patron they accused, and asked for his ID. They then asked him to leave, but wouldn't provide them with a reason why. They then said he was pickpocketing, and said he was banned. When the patron asked for proof of this they wouldn't provide it. I saw neither of these patrons behave inappropriately or commit a crime in the 30-40 minutes they were in there. Reconsider if you want to come to this bar, you or your friends maybe be accused of something you didn't do in order to protect staff who are incapable of doing their job and following safety precautions (letting random people who aren't searched properly and without checking their ID through the back) read more

Shout out to the bar tenders. Very patient and chill. Some more helpful than others. I love mezcal and come in here every now and then to try something new. One bar tender, I think he said he was the manager, was excited to see a mezcal enthusiast and went above and beyond grabbing, recommending, showcasing different bottles even when it was busy. Huge selection of great stuff from Mal Bien to Meror Mero to Vago to 5 sentidos and more. Definitely stop by for a tasting. A little pricey, but that's just the reality of good mezcal. Sometimes this place gets PACKED. I prefer not to come too late or on certain nights, like the weekends now. Too much reggaeton for me, papi. Hahaha. Not in it for that. Not the best area. Crackheads everywhere outside. It's Downtown. Be safe. Use rideshare services. One of the best places in LA if you want to hear great Latin music and amazing selection in Tequila & Mezcal spirits. There's never a dull night here as this place always has music going on every night with no cover charge. There might be lines at times during the weekends but it's worth the wait as the vibes here are great. For being a busy bar, service is always quick and helpful. Never have had a bad experience when the service here despite how packed this place can get. What a fun night I had with my girlfriend! the security at the front let us in ahead of all the people in line and that was really the highlight of the night. Las perlas is a hole in the wall bar. It' has a nice Mexican aesthetic going on. I've been here a couple times. Our go to bartender was JULIO! He's so amazing @ his craft. He seriously deserved a raise. I always got the sandita, it's pretty good. It's a small bar so it gets packed really quickly & hot! Over time you start to notice they play the same music over again. The first couple of times it was fun. Then for my friend's birthday they stole her phone while in line for the restroom, it was in her purse. The last time I went, they stole my phone as well as another friends. My purse was right under my shoulder, idk how they do it but they're slick. They immediately turn the phones off. Since this place is dark, it's hard to tell if anyone actually pissed their pants, but either way I know the smell has been penetrating for ages! Great selection of tequila - no gimmicky brands or celebrity alcohol. The vibes here are very LA, there is a younger crowd here on weekends as well as an older crowd who pops in. The music they play is usually reggaetón on weekends. They have live music during the week and tequila tasting. Tacos are amazing!! Their chicken tinga is so yummy and they also have vegan options. More than cocktails, this place is a sipper's spot. Quality agave, like most good spirits, are meant to be slowly enjoyed, not shot or mixed. Again, this is the place. For instance, we'll go to try out a spread from one brand. They easily have 4-5 bottles of most makers on the shelves. Or, if you really like a varietal (Sotol, Tequila, Tobala), it's fun to compare different brands' offerings. The staff is knowledgeable and fun. The music is great and the food cooked out on the patio, while a little spendy, is made to order, delish and very sufficient portions. Great to start a night out in DTLA or settle in and spend in all there. We make it a point to stop in anytime we hit DTLA, we moved to Long Beach so a little more of a trek than Silver Lake these days. We've also visited their Austin location, equally fun in its own right. I saw one poster mention not the place if you're under 30 and I agree. If you're looking for cheap well drinks and top 40 jams vs. a chill vibe and quality spirits, don't go here.
