The place was fairly deserted on a weekday but I came during lunch time. They had lunch specials combos with two veggies, main course, naan, and rice. It's a pretty decent variety of dishes and flavors. The servers were friendly enough and got our order out fairly fast. Curry chicken combo - tender and juicy chicken with a decent sauce. Whaaat happened? This used to be my go-to Indian restaurant for take-out for years , had not been for a a few months and decided to order tonight. Food is totally different from before. Sour saag paneer, hard flat garlic naan and samosa pastry not the usual flaky sort. And for having requested mild, dishes were spicy. I had a terrible experience. I ordered appetizers: Cholay Bhatura and Samosas. The cholay was runny, the bread was uncooked and different than the usual puffy bread- it's now a wheat bread (yuck); I'm unsure how they managed to ruin samosas, but they were undercooked and cold- not even room temperature. The main dishes were spicy despite ordering mild and for the cost, the portions are small. Worst yet, when I addressed the quality issues, the woman kept gaslighting me and telling me that "it's okay." Could have been a language barrier, but the rude and dismissive tone was telling. She told me that other customers complained that things were "too well done", however, I'm still wondering why someone else's experience is worth bringing up when my food was undercooked. So, poison me with undercooked food because you overcooked a different order? Nonetheless, the failure to fully cook food is not just unfortunate, it's unforgivable when you couple the transgression with an attitude. Don't waste your money. read more

I am sad to write this review. Tonight I ordered the tandoori chicken and the peas and paneer dish. The tandoori chicken was very very DRY, and the paneer dish was VERY under seasoned. I called GrubHub to relay my experience and got a refund for those items. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THAT, I got a call from the owner (I'm assuming) from the restaurant, yelling at me and telling me that they make everything fresh and that she's calling GrubHub to tell them not to deliver to my address anymore!!! Then she hung up on me!! I've been patronizing this business for YEARS!! I normally love their food as evidenced by the FIVE STAR REVIEW I gave them!! Now because the owner decided to call MY phone and YELL AT ME, and tell me they're not delivering to me anymore, and then hang up on me, and treated me RUDELY, they're getting my lowest rating EVER!! Bad business, folks. When a customer is not happy with your food, you MAKE IT RIGHT, not call them up and yell and f unprofessionally and ban them from your restaurant!! EDIT: spoke with the mother's daughter in law who promised me she would talk to her and make sure the next time I order I'm not going to have a problem. I don't eat Indian food often, so when I do, I expect quality. The person I went with picked this place since we went on a random Tuesday, during lunch and it was in close vicinity to us. When we walked in, there was no one inside, but two ladies who worked there. I was a little skeptical -- it was almost like they were anxious for business. We got seated right away and offered water. She explained that it was a buffet and that we can help ourselves when we were ready, so we did. The selection was very limited and there was one option of dessert and one salad option as well. She said the bread was being prepared and would come out shortly. By the time we got our food, she brought the Naan bread out. It was fresh and warm? Kudos. I though that the food was definitely up to par; either that or I was extremely famished. I didn't have high expectations for a small little business like this and especially when we walked in to Ghost Town. A few minutes after we sat down, more patrons came in, so that made me feel a little bit better. Even though the selection wasn't as wide as I'd hoped, everything was on point and the service was good. She kept coming by to check on our waters. Although I don't do Indian often, I would come back for lunch or dinner and also recommend this place to others. I would love to try ordering from their menu one day. P.S. Decent Indian food but nothing to write home about. Generous portions if you want some local Indian food.

I've been enjoying this restaurant for years. In pre-Covid (and pre-vegetarian) days, the lunch buffet was a decadent treat--I especially loved the Tandoori chicken, and the raita--made with full-fat yogurt, cucumber, and coriander seeds--reminded me of my mother, because she used to make that dish, too. And if you were lucky, the daal had a spicy kick that made it especially good. Alas, the buffet is a casualty of the pandemic, but I routinely order their vegetarian combo for take-out. It includes saag paneer (spinach cooked with homemade cheese and herbs--delicious!), chana masala (spiced chickpeas), aloo gobi (spiced cauliflower and potatoes), naan, and basmati rice. The food is very tasty, and you can easily get two meals out of each order. But I suspect it's prepared for an American palate because it consistently lacks the spicy heat I so love. That won't stop me from ordering it, but more heat would take the food to the next level. I do wish they would pack to-go orders in compostable containers rather than plastic. And I don't need the plastic utensils, either--I'll start leaving those on the table when I pick up my orders. Still, I very much like the food. read more

It's very close to where I live so makes it convenient for me to order food from them. I love their lamb biryani. Rice was literally swimming in lambs lol. I've noticed they masala has different flavor than other Indian restaurants. Maybe they use different curry. My favorites are lamb biryani, goat and lamb curry. I have been going to this restaurant for many years, mainly for convenience. I normally have them deliver but I wanted to stop by Farmer Joes so I decided to pick up my order this time. When I went to go pick up my order the woman at the counter had her mask on her chin. Luckily they have a glass door so I could see in, and even though she was motioning me to come in I asked that she put it on so I could enter to pick up my food. When I got in I found two other people further back in the restaurant sitting at tables also not wearing masks and with no mask in site. I will not be going back. It really makes me wonder how many other restaurants are doing the same and I never knew because I was doing delivery. read more

I live in the neighborhood where this restaurant is. Given the circumstances of the last year I try not to write bad reviews due to the challenges of covid. This place is close by. It's ok, more a convenience than a first choice. I ordered from there tonight. The prices have gone up by about 25% since covid...no problem It's been a challenge for businesses. I wanted a mint sauce but my friend who picked it up forgot. So, I go back to try to get a mint sauce...she informed me it was a "Chutney" and it was $3.28. I was rather stunned and said "I've never heard of being charged for mint sauce so...Never mind. Bye" They will never get another order from me again. How remarkably stupid cheap. Delicious Curry House and Himalayan Curry House in montclair are 10 times better than this place. They didn't ask for extra $$ for mint sauce. Good luck to this place. How cheap. read more

As a Desi, I hate to give my only local Indian spot 3 stars but I have good reason. The buffet is really subpar, especially for vegetarians. Great local Indian cuisine delivery, BUT they put the delicious yogurt sauce that comes with the biryani in a plastic container that melts in the heat of the dish. PLEASE PACKAGE THE SAUCE SEPERATELY!!! Update: They no longer put the delicious yogurt sauce in with the biryani. I didn't want it melting but I still liked the sauce. Our bill was $70 for an online order that we picked up (delivery would've taken an hour). When I picked up the food, I asked to make sure we had chutney, etc.... I was told that I didn't order anything that comes with chutney so I would have to purchase it!!! I have NEVER had to pay for chutney in my whole indian/pakistani life! I inquired further and despite the 70 bucks I spent, these people insisted on another $2 for chutney... I am not going back to a place where their customer service is so poor and they are so cheap. The food was OK, nothing special. We got chicken biriyani (chicken was kind of dry), 2 orders of chicken tikka masala (was alright), malai kofta (weird thick consistency), 4 naans and 5 mango lassis (the laasis were terribly sweet, I do not recommend from this restaurant). We also got raita (yogurt sauce) which I also had to pay $3 extra for even though biriyani should come with it... the raita was ok, basically watery yogurt with some cucumbers in it. I always go with the popular Chicken Tikka Masala. It it legit consistent every time I order from them. It has just the right amount of spicy, super creamy and fulfilling to dip garlic naan into. Their CTM alone is worth ordering form here. It also comes with a side of rice which fills you up as well. Order local! read more

This is a great Indian place and our go-to place for takeout or delivery. We ordered takeout from this place just a few days ago and were surprised to find that the workers at the restaurant were not wearing masks when interacting with customers (and presumably not when making food). It really turned us off of Shaan a bit, especially because we are currently in the middle of a huge COVID outbreak and they interact with dozens of customers each day. read more

Shaan has tasty food and a solid lunch buffet. The vibe is a cross between the upscale place over on Grand ( a little too pricey over there) and The more casual Kerry House. I would love it if they could levitate to the SF Pakwan style over on Valencia! The specials and always hot, fresh and tasty food is key! I think if they did it could get much busier here! The people are very nice. But they are a little uneven in how they treat people- they can come off as unfriendly or discouraging- lighten up and let's just all get along! read more

We often get take out from Shaan. They have traditional Indian dishes that are authentic and delicious. Try the butter chicken, lamb chops, and garlic naan. They are able to make it to your spice level and be sure to request it otherwise it will be too spicy or too mild. Parking is street only and it's is a good neighborhood. read more

Second time in the restaurant - the hostess/manager went through all the vegan options for me for next time. Service was friendly and enthusiastic but inexperienced. Third visit - same tasty food and Bollywood music videos, same service. It's not very crowded - could be they do more delivery business? - Onion pakora - super yummy! - samosas - tasty, but not extraordinary - Aloo Saag - asked for spicy - excellent! - Aloo Gobi - awesome (cauliflower was not overcooked!) - Rice is pretty darned good - not overcooked or dried, tasty spices and peas. I popped in for dinner tonight for the chicken tikka masala. I had wanted the Thali Dinner but unbeknowst to me when I received my meal only two dishes were brought ( the chicken and rice separately ). I asked if more was being brought as the menu indicated that it came with a vegetable curry of the day, dal, raita, rice, plain nan and kheer. To my surprise they said "yes" but it must of been to confirming that my nan to go order was on it's way. It was only then she explained to me that the dinner was not available. Well if it's going to be a la carte so be it. The rice was a generous portion and the chicken tikki masala was tasty in a mild sauce with nice size chunks of meat. 3 1/2 stars but communication could be improved. read more
