I have dined here a few times. I wrote this review previously and it disappeared. I'm going to repost this review. While the sushi is great here. I question the service the last time I was here. There were two of us and the waiter refused to split the check. We were told because this was policy and it was written on the menu. I don't recall seeing this. I do understand not splitting checks is a normal practice for large parties. This was not that. I have never returned. I don't know that I will. This location isn't convenient to my part of town and honestly I haven't thought to go here since.

I absolutely love this place. Been coming for years. Whether take out or dine in, BOGO sushi or pad Thai & chicken teriyaki, they're always consistently good food, good service, and good prices. Something that I think they do better than a lot of other sushi places are the rolls on the BOGO menu. They have tons to pick from and they're all well priced. We just recently got 4 specialty rolls for less than $38.

6/7 visit: We had the taste for sushi and wanted to eat before hitting up Trader Joe's. Never shop on an empty stomach lol! I was happy to learn they offer BOGO rolls so this is a win. A very nice restaurant with a calm and quiet atmosphere. Well, we stopped by during lunch hours so I can only speak for this timeframe. We were quickly seated and promptly served. Our server was friendly and polite. He was familiar with the menu and helped us with any questions we had. We ordered chicken pad Thai, shrimp tempura roll and the spider roll. The rolls were good sized portions and flavorful. The pad Thai on the other hand didn't fit to my liking. The reason was the noodles used and the taste. It had a very sweet taste which I didn't like and they didn't use pad Thai noodles I am used to. They used a thinner noodle, which normally I would love but not in my pad Thai. I'm used to a thicker noodle. I would visit again for the bogo sushi if in the area.

Went early this evening and enjoyed the peace and quiet that this place offered. The service is excellent and the food is delicious! I had the Pad See Ewe and the Thai House salad with peanut dressing. The portions are LARGE!!! In the picture this is about half of my order as I couldn't finish it and took it to go!

This is a favorite lunch place for meeting up with friends and relatives as the atmosphere is quiet so you can actually carry on a conversation and hear it. It's in the Trader Joe's shopping center on Wake Forest Road near the beltline. Plenty of parking, even though it's a busy strip mall. They do take reservations, but usually there's no problem getting in (at least for lunch, can't attest for dinner). Love the Thai lunch specials. Not huge quantities, but very tasty and nicely prepared. Kee Mao and Basil Chicken are favorites. Do know if you order shrimp on a lunch meal, it will be just three. Great prices for the quality. They also have Japanese items on the menu including some BOGO rolls. I personally stick with Thai here, but have been with others who were happy with their Japanese selections. TIP: Look on line for their daily specials for both lunch and dinner. They also usually participate in Restaurant Week when it comes up.

Delicious food at this combo Japanaese/Thai spot. It's a storefront shop in a strip mall an hired by Trader Joe's. Plenty of free parking. The restaurant shares an entrance with a coffee shop. We were there for an early dinner so tables were plentiful but the place filled up quickly. Service is quick and pleasant. Approximately 10 minutes from order to service. Massaman curry with shrimp is delicious. Perfect shrimp, onion, avocado, potatoes in a pool of creamy curry sauce, slightly sweet with the tiniest bit of heat. Plus a crock of sticky rice to mix in. A favorite combination, done well. 1 point off for leaving the shrimp tails-on. It's a pain to fish the shrimp out and de-tail. Pineapple dried rice is a unique and tasty choice. Freshly wok-ed fried rice, tossed with chunks of pineapple and a few raisins make a nice combo of sweet and savory. This option included tofu - a BIG portion of cubed tofu, nicely stir-fried with a crunchy outside and soft inside. Lastly a couple of sushi rolls. The star is the sweet potato rolls. Small chunks of tempura-style sweet potato ensconced with veggies and topped with avocado. Tasty! A full menu of other choices to try... Will be back to this place!

    Wolfpack and Samurai Roll

Was told by a couple of coworkers that I must try Shabu Shabu as their sushi is amazing and I have to agree! I arrived at lunchtime, so it was pretty busy. The manager warmly greeted me and took me to my table. My waiter was a little cold and it felt like he was rushed. He sat down my menu and asked me right away what I wanted. I told him that I needed a couple of minutes and he did not come back or even around me for like 10 minutes. Before my stomach could eat itself he reappeared and took my order. I got their BOGO sushi deal, and decided to get the Wolfpack roll and Samurai roll. The Wolfpack roll has crab, avocado, scallions, and tempura flakes. The Samurai roll had cream cheese, salmon, and scallions. Wow! They give you a generous portion of fresh sushi along with ginger and Wasabi. Everything is fresh and so worth the wait! It still stays good as I could not finish the rolls and took them with me. I cannot wait to come back as a couple of dudes next to me had their Thai basil which came with tons of veggies! They highly recommend it as they get it every time. So I will be back!

The atmosphere in the restaurant was very inviting. The food was acceptable. We were a party of 8 people, and many of us commented that we didn't receive the kind of taste explosion that we were anticipating with the dishes that we ordered. One of our diners was from Thailand, and she felt the food was decent, not exceptional

    Mackenzie M.

oh my GOD!!! The service, the food, the people?? I've truly never had better sushi and service in my whole LIFE. It was so delicious and everything was so fresh!! it's a little expensive when getting two alcoholic drinks, but it was so worth it! Joy was a literal joy to have as a server, she always made sure we had plenty of water, and that we were always doing okay! I cannot WAIT to come back here!!

Awesome takeout option! I spontaneously ordered takeout lunch online on a rainy day, and ShabaShabu did not disappoint. With an estimated wait time of up to 45min, it was ready under 20! Such quick response and great quality. Next time, I'll definitely come back to eat inside - the interior is lovely!

Best green curry I've had in a while. Simple and excellently balanced. I chose shrimp and it was the perfect mix.

I'd ordered very enjoyable, sushi takeout from here but it was my first experience dining in. The menu is optimized to allow choices between Thai or Japanese style food. The cocktail menu is fairly priced and full of variety. We enjoyed each item and our server was very helpful with "tie breaker" type recommendations. We'll be back.

    Haley N.

Best Thai place ever!!!! The homemade coconut cake is to die for - not too sweet but light fluffy and airy. Tom kha is perfect and the red curry is definitely the best I've had in years. Couldn't even critique anything even if I wanted to. Plus the manager Peter is super sweet and will go out of his way to help you with a smile:) will definitely be my new spot!

She wanted to make sure I didn't have an allergy. How amazing?! The chicken teriyaki and the veggies it was served with were absolutely AMAZING! Knowing how quickly their tables disappear, I checked for reservations on the drive over, fully expecting disappointment. Instead, a small miracle: an open table. I booked it before the screen could change its mind. Upon arrival, the host greeted us with the gentle chaos that only a true local favorite can produce. Our table wasn't quite ready "just waiting on a few folks to wrap up" so we lingered near the entryway, watching the ebb and flow of diners. A brief mix-up had us nearly escorted to a table before being pulled back, but within minutes we were seated, no worse for the detour. Our spot was perfect: a front-row view of the sushi bar, where chefs moved with the quiet intensity of people who know their craft is being watched and appreciated. The restaurant hummed around us servers weaving between tables, the soft clatter of plates, the low murmur of regulars who clearly consider this their second home. Our server, whose name I wish I'd caught, was a standout. Attentive without hovering, candid about the kitchen running a bit behind, and consistently thoughtful with updates. His honesty made the experience feel more intimate, more human. Cocktails arrived first, followed by a parade of sushi and small plates. Everything was fresh, balanced, and deeply satisfying, the kind of meal that doesn't need theatrics to make an impression.

They had the perfect char on the dumpling without making it too seared. The Sashimi plate was incredible, each piece of fish melted in your mouth. If I have to give one critique I'd say our yellow tail was still a little frozen but that didn't stop me from devouring it. Crispy Salmon Roll was light and refreshing and their Rainbow Roll was like no other I've had. I had already looked at the menu online and knew what I wanted: shoyu ramen. The order was served with a spoon, a side plate and a paper towel. There was 1 soft-boiled cut into two halves and ample amounts of scallion, menma and braised pork belly. The latter had a rich flavor, helped in no small part by the pork and chicken broth. Not only that, the broth complimented the rest of the ingredients; the egg was enjoyable. My only (minor) complaint is the portion size of the ramen itself. It was smaller than I would like. The lady that served me was probably (best guess) the owner. Her service was impeccable. In addition, Kinoko has a pleasing amenity not found in most restaurants: an AC outlet at every table that was by the wall. This was very handy for a heavy user of laptops and phones like myself. Although there was music playing in the background, it wasn't loud. The server and I were able to hear each other, and I could also hear the voices of others at the bar. The restroom had an interesting decor of newspapers for wallpaper. That was something I didn't see elsewhere. If you love good ramen, come to Kinoko Ramen. Their pieces are perfectly sized for sashimi or nigiri. 35$ a person we love the quality and service, make sure to order while eating or else the wait can get long, they're always busy! Ambiance is nice, it's a large well lit place with a bar and TVs, arcade claws, and lots of young kids grinding ! Order on a QR code but also have menus. We rarely wait longer than 10min. We've ordered it all here but we recommend the salmon. Nigiri sashimi whatever!! We could come here and eat multiple whole fish

You're not getting tiny, low-effort pieces. The cuts are generous and fresh. I leaned heavily into the AYCE sashimi (tuna, salmon, red snapper, yellowtail, etc.), and every round delivered. It felt much closer to a traditional sushi experience than a typical AYCE setup. Service was also a big plus. The staff was very attentive, consistently checking in and bringing out orders quickly, which kept the experience smooth and enjoyable without long waits between rounds. For the price and quality, it's an incredible value and a place you can really enjoy without feeling like you're compromising. We will absolutely be going back!

I was having a hard time finding a place in Raleigh that served quality ingredient sushi & was worth the price for the quantity. We found ourselves at O-Ku after a friend recommended this place as her favorite sushi in Raleigh. Immediately was impressed, as we came for my birthday & the staff signed a birthday card for me and gave me a surprise dessert. Excellent service! On my 2 year wedding anniversary we came back again bc we loved the sushi the first time and wanted to have delicious food on our special night. The staff once again surprised us with flowers on the table, a special printed menu that said 2nd year Anniversary & a dessert to go. This place is absolutely stunning inside as well. Beautiful restaurant, they also have an intimate outdoor patio with pretty lights. Highly recommend this place for a special occasion or even just a night out if you're looking for the best sushi in Raleigh! Love ya, O-Ku -- we'll be back!

Great ambience, but…read more.. Venue: great ambience, lively. Food: we ordered gyoza, rock shrimp, toro spoon, various rolls, and some nigiri. insane price for sushi/ nigiri especially uni. If it was great and special, pricing would be understood but not the case here. The toro spoon had old fish taste. Sushi rice was over cooked and very mushy. Sorry but sushi roles reminded me of the ones you get in the grocery store. Duck kushiyaki was recommended and tasted somewhat bland and tough. Came here for family birthday dinner. No body really liked the dishes here. Service: our server was very kind and tried his best to accommodate us. Great ambience but I don't see any of us coming back here for food.

As Japanese visitors, we're always a bit picky when it comes to Japanese food, but everything we ordered was absolutely delicious and authentic. We enjoyed the Ishiyaki ribeye, ramen, and sushi, and were also impressed by the excellent selection of Japanese beers and sake. We didn't expect to find such high quality Japanese cuisine in Raleigh, and it exceeded our expectations. A special thank you to Marika, who was incredibly kind, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit. Her warm hospitality made us feel right at home and truly made our dining experience even more memorable. Whether you're visiting Raleigh or live in the area, we highly recommend this restaurant. Thanks to the outstanding food and Marika's exceptional service, this meal will always be one of our favorite memories of our time in Raleigh.

Five stars, no hesitation…read more I heard about Sono Sushi through Resy and finally made it in. It's located in downtown Raleigh on Fayetteville Street, right next to the ABC 11 studios, easy to find and a great spot if you're already downtown. The ambiance is great and fits the food well. There's a nice mix of seating, tables along the windows looking out onto the street, high top tables, traditional dining tables, and a sushi bar if you want to sit up close and watch everything being made. It feels lively without being loud, and works well whether you're there for a date night or a more casual meal. We started with the Aburi appetizer, torched salmon belly, ooba, salmon roe, Japanese seabream, yuzu kosho, and ponzu, and it was outstanding. Everything worked together perfectly, rich, bright, and balanced. I also ordered ikura and ebi, even though I meant to order ama ebi, but no regrets there. Still excellent. We shared the Poke Roll with wakame, avocado, cucumber, mango, tuna, salmon, hamachi, and Sono poke sauce, and it was very good, fresh, flavorful, and well composed without being overdone. My wife ordered the spicy miso ramen and loved it. The broth was the star, deep and comforting, and the pork chashu pieces were massive, in a good way. I went with the chicken katsu curry, panko fried chicken thigh with house curry and koshihikari rice, something I haven't had since Little Tokyo in LA a few years ago, and it tasted like home. Comforting, familiar, and exactly what I was hoping for. For drinks, I ordered the "SONO? SO-YES!" entirely because of the name, but also because I love blood orange. Casamigos Blanco tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, coconut cream, simple syrup, and blood orange juice, it was excellent. My only complaint is that I wanted more of it. My wife got the Okinawa Spritz, a play on an Aperol spritz with passionfruit, and it was even better than the original. We finished with the yuzu cheesecake. I debated between that and the ube cheesecake, but since this is a Japanese restaurant, yuzu felt right, and it absolutely delivered. Overall, everything from the food to the drinks hit. This is a place I would happily return to, and honestly, I'm already looking forward to the next visit.
