I been here a few times and have witness the rise and fall of this place. In the beginning the quality of the meat and seafood was great. Plenty of options at the buffet. The price was fair. Lately though every time that we went, the meat options keeps changing (and not for the better), shrimps gone from jumbo size to tiny little ones. The straw that broke the camels back was when they replaced the udon and glass noodles with plant based ramen. That stuff tastes like wet dough when it's cooked. Not to mention prices keeps going up and too many unnecessary pricing tiers. It's just very disappointing to see this place go down in quality like this. read more

A solid 4/5. My family and I did the premium tier and I thought the quality of the food was mid for the price. My parents qualified for the senior discount (55+ years old) which gave us a 20% discount which was nice. The sushi wasn't anything impressive and the flavors of the sushi didn't wow me. The veggie and other hot pot options were kind of limited. You get much more options at happy lamb and other AYCE hot pot locations. I did enjoy the soybean puff, the tong hao, the pork belly and mushrooms. The udon was already soft and not chewy, and there was only 1 meatball option. The wagyu beef didn't blow me away either. It's nice that drinks are included in the price. You can get tea, coffee soft drinks, etc. My parents were there to eat the crab and we noticed after the first round, the crab got smaller and the quality went down. By the 3rd and 4th round of crab, the crab got extremely salty to the point where you need to dunk it in the soup to dilute it. This tip was given by the waiter so I feel like it's a strategy to get people to slow down on the crab? Either way, the service was very prompt, efficient and friendly. I'm glad we got to try but, but overall wasn't super impressed with the quality, the number of options, and the price. There's better hotpot options elsewhere. The sauce bar was a nice touch and they had some unique dipping flavors. Some of the sauces had more of a Thai chili flavor. The tables are a bit small for your plates and meats. There aren't too many Japanese Hot Pots with cat-robots serving you unlimited slices of meat on trays. Each table is outfitted with an individual pot of your choice of broth. I went with the classic soy. There's a buffet to gather your veggies, noodles, make your own sauces, and some random items like pancakes, ice cream, curry. Each time you order, there's about 5-6 slices of very thin meat, to which you swish around in the hot broth. Be sure to order your meat on the tablet and the cat will retrieve them for you. It is quite novel to see this working, but I think for a hot pot experience, you can find better variety, quality and value. read more

Super fun shabu shabu experience in Schaumburg. We came at 5pm on Friday evening and it was fairly empty. There is a large parking lot. We were seated at a booth that has individual broth pots for each guest and the waiter explains the ordering process and from there you order from the tablet. We ordered from option P which had wagyu brisket, chuck, pork belly, shrimp, drinks and two other cuts of meat. The whole table has to have the same menu it was explained. It was $45 per person and all you can eat for 2 hours. You can select from four types of broth and we also ordered the broth bear which is adorable but didn't add much flavor. The buffet has vegetables, a sauce bar, hot appetizers and desserts. The veggies looked fresh and they were on dry ice. You add the veggies to the pot to make the broth and then you add the meat for about 10 seconds. Everything looked clean and fresh. Robots bring your dishes to the table and you can keep ordering from the tablet. It started to get more crowded with groups and families. This is a very fun experience if you've never gone to this before and it is expensive. I would give an overall 4.5 stars because this is very special but take off a half star because it is pricey and we can't eat that much. Also if you've never done this before this is so much it can be overwhelming and also the pork belly was very thinly sliced, I've had it at other hot pot restaurants where it is thicker. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for a while now. I had made a reservation for my friend's birthday. However, I did arrive 10 minutes after my reservation that was a big mistake. It was early afternoon, and the place was already packed. The host was more than accommodating and put us on the list, all we had to do was wait in an additional 30 minutes and I'm glad we did. I do recommend that you make a reservation. They max the table at about two hours so use your time wisely. If you are new to hot pot, it can be a little confusing. Our server tried to do his best and explain how everything works but again, as I mentioned above this place gets pretty busy so he had his hands full. I met some cool people in the buffet line that explained how this particular hot pot will go. While sitting at the table you can purchase additional items outside of the hot pot menu you selected. My friend and I chose to go with the unlimited Wagyu and sushi. This is definitely a restaurant that you would go to on a special occasion. The whole WOW factor is the robot serving you. Just make sure you're sitting at your table and move fast because that robot is on a mission. With all that being said, I truly enjoy the experience. If I had to rate this restaurant, I would give it a 7 out of only because customer service was lacking that day due to the restaurant being very busy. read more

Quiet Saturday afternoon here. Excellent food. Was able to try some new vegetables. Leeks and baby corn I don't care for but rice cakes were a thumbs up. Was able to compare mushrooms and I liked the taste equally. Be careful with the tomatoes when they come out of the pot they can be the temperature of Mercury! Shrimp is easy to overcook and doesn't taste as good as properly cooked shrimp. The Wagyu is excellent. Chuck roll especially but the regular shoulder and chuckroll are no slouches. Pork belly is spot on. I prefer the chicken broth, my husband likes the sukiyaki one. And don't forget the ice tea hack cup of hot green tea plus glass of ice equals a very tasty ice tea. read more

So, we decided to try this place! We had reservations for our group of 10. We arrived and were promptly seated. This was a fun experience, one that I have never done before but glad we tried. Shabu shabu is like hot pot but Japanese. Pick your soup base, pick the meats and veggies and sauce to dip in. All the ordering is done thru the iPad at the table. A cat robot brings all your things over that you order. The meat was all pretty decent, I enjoyed the pork belly the most I think. The sauce I liked was the gomo sauce, sesame flavor. The meat portions are somewhat small so I found ourselves going thru it quite quickly. So order a bunch to start with. The individual pots are nice too. I chose chicken broth which was perfectly fine to cook the meats and veggies in. The ramen noodles was included in all the meal options because it was now just ramen noodles at the bar to cook in your pot. That was a nice touch since you could have all the noodles you wanted and we did eat a bunch of those. There's even a pancake maker that makes a decent pancake with just a wave of the hand. There was no place to put your empty/dirty dishes so you had to wait until someone came by to grab them. Also the restaurant for some reason sits customers right next to each other even when the entire row of booths are available. What a great experience! It's pricey, even for AYCE's but I think it's definitely different than others in the experience and it's a fun experience of you have kids. The concept is cooking shabu in individual pots at the table. Due to this, their seating arrangements are not ideal for larger family groups. We had eight in our group and we were seated at two 4 tops across from each other. An alternative would be to seat in a booth separated by a divider with a draw string shutter-shade. You'll get to see each other, but conversation would be limited. We arrived at 3pm on a Saturday. The staff had our table prepared well I'm advance due to making a reservation ahead of time. If you need high chairs there are limited seating arrangements. The menu includes drinks, dessert, veggies, meats. If you want sushi or upgraded waygu beef and crab legs, those are add on's for higher price points. Since it was our first time, we opted for Level C Waygu + Sushi. The beef was delicious, we liked pork belly as well and the shrimp was quite plump. You order everything on the touch screen at the table side and the robo-cat server drops by within 5 mins. I think if they had an option for table side grilling it would have been fun as well, with veggies cooked in broth and seared waygu. I think for hotpot, you do need meats with more fats. The fun part is making your own dipping sauces, as they have over a dozen choices in the buffet. I didn't have an opportunity to try it all, but I had a good mix. The hot food buffet options were flavorful it was not that busy when we arrived at 3pm, so some of it was out for a little while. My kids really enjoyed the popcorn shrimp, and I thought the karagge had good flavor. You could really make a decent meal out of the buffet/non hotpot arrangement. Wish that had that as a stand-alone, but the menu did not appear to be like that. For my drink I decided on coffee since it was cold, and the coffee was actually pretty decent. By no means an artisan coffee but it was what I'd consider good. At the end of meal I tried a coca cola, which was definitely flat. I didn't skip on the veggies as they go really well with the meal, watercress, king mushrooms and spinach, plopped them right off my plate into the pot. It was great. The ramen took longer than I originally thought to cook through, but it was a good noodle after a few tries. I think I'll be back for another shot at hot pot next time. It was a fun experience especially with the robots, great for cold weather. Only complaint is that they sat new diners right next to us when the entire restaurant was available. This was my second time visiting Shabu You. I opted in for the $39+$1 (cheapest for Friday night) chicken soup base AYCE option which includes the chuck roll, shoulder, pork belly, shrimp, and drink (shown below). The drink is already baked into the price so there was no way to opt out. It's a nice experience if you haven't done a Japanese style hot pot (cook it yourself) before but I felt that it wasn't worth the minimum $40. They provide dipping sauces/seasoning and they have a few Japanese dishes like Takoyaki, Japanese curry, and mochi but nothing I would come back for. The meat looked as though it came straight to us after it being defrosted. Note that non of the meat was pre-seasoned. Luckily, the sauces from the sauce section came in to save the day. A dining experience worth trying! This shabu shabu place was very tech-friendly with robot service and a tablet to order from. The interior was very large with lots of seating, but I would definitely recommend making a reservation since there can be long wait during peak lunch and dinner times. The workers were also very friendly and accommodating, checking in frequently to see how we were doing. The meat was good quality, the sukiyaki and tonkotsu broth were very flavorful, and the buffet sides were plentiful in variety. A pro tip: although it's tempting, try not to fill yourself up on the buffet options! We did love the chuck roll, shoulder, and pork belly, but the marbling and taste of the wagyu wasn't that great to rationalize ordering again. Although the courses do range around $40-$60, there are a lot of additional charges for different broths, toppings, flavor boosters, extra meats, and an automatic service charge. This was probably the funnest place we've eaten at since moving to Schaumburg! Robots delivering meat to your table with an incessantly upbeat electronic jingle (and fake eyes on the robot that emote!) - very cool. But that's not THE reason to go at all. It's the food! Hubby is from Japan, and had eaten at one of their restaurants there a couple weeks ago while he was there for business- and it was quite cheap (by American standards, that is). He loved it. When we found out they had one - and I mean only one- here in the States, right here in Schaumburg? We had to try. We easily made reservations, and were seated immediately on arrival. We did have a waiter, who brought my hot sake (of course) and the menus. We had 4 broths to choose from and took the Umami Kelp (and for a few bucks more they had cute little "bears" full of flavor, such as curry, you could add to your broth for a bit more spice in your life! We took Set A, which gave us unlimited amts of pork, shrimp, and two types of beef (what? no chicken?). The other Sets offered wagyu beef and crab (!) too. Nope - we're purists and simple peasants - just the basics for us! Once David our waiter took our order, the table-mounted iPad took over for ordering more meats - and order we did. Every order was quickly followed by the aforementioned cute little robot bringing over our thinly shaved meats to add/cook in the broth! But I digress - cuteness aside, it's a buffet of sorts, right? So you walk over to what looks like a salad bar, grab a plate, and take your choice of chopped up veggies and accompaniments to add/cook in the broth too! Unlimited, did I mention that? If not, well..... I shoulda. Needless to say, we'll be back (and the senior discount of 20% was pretty nice too). Overall, our experience here was just "meh". It was "good enough", but not good enough to come back. One odd situation was that it seemed like everything was out of order. They had a sign at the door that alcohol was unavailable that day. We did not want any, but that seemed odd. The soda machine was out of order because the pipes frozen. Fair enough as it was below zero out on the day of our visit. The temperature in the ladies' restroom was also frigid, and the water was too. Even the hand dryer was blowing freezing cold air. But things that were not out of the restaurant's control were the lack of replacement of dishware at the buffet. When we arrived, there were two trays of coffee/tea cups and a few stacks of triple sauce plates, but by about an hour into our visit there were no more cups nor sauce plates out and we had to improvise. Tables were not bussed in a timely fashion either. The restaurant was not excessively busy, so I am not sure why that would have been. One "design flaw" if one can call it that is that you really have to plan for what you want to add to your soup or you will be making numerous trips up to the buffet area. The rotary style hotpot restaurants seem easier in this respect. As for the food, the buffet itself was unimpressive. There were not a lot of options for veggies and other additions to the soup. The hot options were just ok, and not all items were kept/served at a proper temperature. Some dessert items were literally served frozen (i.e. the mini cream puffs), which was not all that pleasant. None of the sauces were really tasty either. As for the hotpot itself, the Spicy Miso and Citrus Miso broths were very good, but the Chicken broth and the Tonkotsu broth were both essentially flavorless. We got the everyday trio, and the beef and pork were good, but the chicken was flavorless. On a positive note, our server and the hostess were both lovely, the restaurant & restrooms were clean, and the little robot cat delivery system was delightful. They offer different tier that you can select from for the meat with varies price point. The higher the tier, the more meat options. Once you select your tier and the broth, you can continue to order from the tablet. Each person have their own individual cooktop and you can shabu-shabu your way. They also have a buffet line item closer from the entrance. It have the sauce bar, veggies, noodles, hot items and dessert. I like the meat portion is small for each order, so that I can have room to try other items as well. I think next time I should keep count on how many plate of meat I ate. I was a little skeptical I would like the experience after some of the other reviews, but I'm happy to say my son and I had a great experience. The waitress was very helpful and explained the process well. I don't agree that the robots are annoying, instead make the process efficient and seem less. Without them, you'd have to have more staff to deliver and bus the tables. Our server was on top of drink refills, and checked on us frequently. My son loved the robots and I think it made the experience that much more unique. There was plenty of food options in the buffet and dessert items. Only 3 types of sushi rolls were out and available, but they were fresh and well prepared. We didn't get the upgraded meat options but I feel the regular option suited us fine, and was a good value given how expensive everything seems to be these days. Idk why but before I came here this restaurant sounded fancier than it is It's most accurately described as a casual family restaurant, and if you go in with the right picture this place delivers. If you come here, just eat beef. The beef is fresh, you order it on an iPad at your table, and the cat robots provide very speedy service. Everything else is pretty secondary. The other meats... Super meh. In the last year they removed some options so there is less variety but they weren't good anyway. The sushi... Don't bother. The buffet of veg is kept pretty cold and fresh but gets messy quickly. They do their best but it's hard to keep up with all the ppl and the tongs they use - hard to grab food cleanly! There isn't a huge variety but just a good amt of basics to accompany your meat. There's also surprisingly good curry and a small selection of hot Japanese dishes, also surprisingly decent. Fried foods and dessert are a complete afterthought, which is ok - it's not what you're there for. The sauce bar is great. A ton of options to make good beef dips, whatever direction you want to go in. It's no haidilao but you get what you need! Makes up for the broths which are practically water. But after a while you do flavor it with all your beef. Wouldn't bother paying for the sukiyaki (you can honestly season it yourself with the sauce bar lol) It's a nice place and delivers on the expectation of a light fun meal in a spacious suburby environment. We have always wanted to try shabu shabu. This experience was really different than any restaurant we have been to. When we were sat, a server came up to greet us and we were given 3 packages to choose from and 3 broths to choose from. The three packages offered different tiers of meet that you would cook in your broths. The three broth options were chicken, a sweet teriyaki type of sauce, and a vegetable broth. You have the ability to go up to the buffet to grab plates of vegetables they you'd like to cook in your broth. You can also curate your own dipping sauces with the varieties of sauces and seasonings they have. I chose to make a ponzu scallion sauce with sesame seeds and garlic. It was delicious. There's also an appetizer section, along with rice and curry. The different meat options along with sushi were all you can eat. We optioned for package c where it included ramen as well.The meats and sushi are brought out to you on a robot. We still had a server, that brought drinks and our ramen to us.Dessert was also included, we got our ice cream and some pastries from the buffet. We chose option C to get the waygu option which did not disappoint. The four stars are entirely for the food experience and the food itself. It's a fun experience making your broth and waiting for the robot to deliver your meats: shrimp, wagyu, beef shoulder, pork belly, chuck roll! The robot service was surprisingly fast and fun to watch! We definitely felt like the cost was worth the amount of food we all had. Fun choices for veggies; also loved the mini corn dogs! Yum!! I took off a star because we had reservations for 6pm and didn't get seated until 6:55pm. We'd asked for a table instead of a booth (when we arrived), due to some restrictions of one of our party, so I understand we had to wait a little for that, but we watched a family leave a table and we waited and waited and waited and I finally asked the front staff. I was passing through the area and decided to Yelp some dinner options and this came up. I was a little suspicious whether or not this place would be good since I hadn't heard anything about it. Shabu-shabu sounded really good with the chilly weather so I crossed my fingers and decided to give it a try. I wasn't sure if it was going to be busy so I made an Open Table reservation just to be safe. Upon entering, the space is decorated tastefully. There was a TV by the hostess stand showing clips about the restaurant and it turns out that it's a part of the largest family-owned restaurant chain! The hostess seated us and told us that our server will be over to explain the menu and how it works. Our server was very thorough and explained the different options (A,B,C) and what is included with each option. We decided to go all out and try option C which gave you access to all the meats, sushi, ramen, and drinks. Since it was still Happy Hour, alcoholic beverages were 50% off so I also ordered an Asahi with my hot green tea. I decided to go for the sukiyaki broth (I remember enjoying the flavors when I first had it in Japan) and it was just as good here. There's an iPad on your table where you can choose your different meats, sushi, and ramen. I picked out mostly Wagyu for my meats, some sushi/nigiri selections to try and the tonkotsu ramen. A cute robot then brings your order to your table. There's also a buffet section where you can choose your different vegetables for your broth, a section for different sauces, an area for desserts but my favorite area was the different hot options. There's takoyaki, gyoza, omelette, croquette, karaage, and Mac n cheese just to name a few. My favorite part was the rice cooker filled with soft and fluffy rice next to a huge pot of beef curry. I ended up making a kaarage curry rice with it! So yummy! While it's tempting to fill up on the buffet options, try to save room for the ramen, sushi and of course the shabu-shabu. The broth and the meat was the perfect combo and it really hit the spot. My brother ended up getting the umami kelp and didn't like it as much but they were able to swap his broth to the sukiyaki, no problem. I definitely recommend this spot and would highly encourage having a game plan since you don't want to fill up on the other items without having your fill of the shabu-shabu. read more

I feel very ripped off coming to this place. We came here for mother's day. We ordered the P Menu item (Wagyu + crab) at $60 a person. I can't help but feel very taken advantaged of. The snow crab was awful. Somehow it's overly salty. It definitely not worth the up-charge. The self service buffet was a zoo. Lines were long. The buffet items were unfilled. There were no bowls for sauce. I was scraping the bottom of the bucket of sauces to try to get what was remaining. Plates were not collected. I thought robots were supposed to increase efficiency...apparently not. The only good thing was the beef. The Wagyu was nice. But I would argue for the same price I can enjoy more variety of cuts at Brazilian steakhouse. The service would be better as well. This place is a gimmick. Avoid at all costs. The price is too high for the food. Nothing can compare with Royal buffet and many other buffet like Galaxy Hot Pot & Grill - Des Plaines, Texas de Brazil - Schaumburg. The food is only so so... I will never want to go back! What a waste of money! read more
