Loved the selection and the variety here. The decor was definitely an upgrade from the previous restaurant as well. Pricing is not super crazy at about $25/person for dinner. You're allowed to choose 1 soup base but can order as many meats as you want (red meats you order, everything else is at buffet lines including seafood and veggies). You can switch out your broth but it's a $1 every time you choose to switch. The selection of meats is very tender and delicious however they limit how many plates you can order at a time so you have to keep clearing your plates and reordering. The upside is that they are extremely quick with the refills. I personally had the sukiyaki broth which was a bit sweeter than normal broth but if you mix in some spicy ponzu and sweet garlic sauce it becomes quite delicious. I would definitely come again! Food: you choose a broth ranging from the usual dashi to tonkotsu to sukiyaki. I got sukiyaki which was pleasantly sweet but savory. You can choose up to 4 plates of meat at a time but its all you can eat so no rush on that. Everything else is at the buffet bar and you can help yourself to the sauce bar, plenty of veggies, noodles, and seafood! I was surprised by the quality of everything considering it is a buffet. Solid AYCE food, decent service, and great broth. Shabu Zone is located in the same complex as Hong Kong City Mall. Upon arrival they take you to a seat and you have individual broths to dip your selection of food in. I think this is brilliant because in the past when I have gone to hot pot I did not like the idea of sharing my broth of soup with anyone else especially if I am going with a group of friends and they bring their friends and I have to share new germs. How it works is that you tell them what kind of broth you want, and keep telling them which cuts of meat to bring to you. In the mean time you go get yourself anything else you wanna add to your broth. My friend recommended that I start by adding seafood to my broth and have that done and slowly progress toward adding vegetables to it. They have a generous selection of items that you can choose ranging from the usual seafood items such as shrimp and scallops to some of the more unusual fare such as fish cakes and seaweed noodles. By the time you think your seafood is ready in the liquid, the meats start to come. It comes at a pretty steady pace and it is thinly sliced which is the whole point of shabu shabu. It cooks very quickly and is pretty delicious. They have a great variety of beef, pork, and lamb. I think my favorite was the #4. For dessert, they have the usual AYCE buffet style fruit and ice cream but surprisingly enough their chocolate and coffee ice creams were my absolute favorite that I went back to go get seconds. The atmosphere and decor of the restaurant is very nice, crisp, clean and modern. The staff is so nice and accommodating. Service was 110% perfect ! Now for the important part, the food... It was wonderful ! The dashi base was perfect ! The beef quality was so good, you didn't even need sauce, but their corn and black sesame sauce are both winners ! I have a 6 month old and she always sits next to me in the booth in her car seat since it's portable or her stroller. We have been to a ton of restaurants that make you feel like they want you out so they can accommodate the next guest (even tho we're never that long anyway). I was very skeptical about coming since I've been pretty scarred from shabu before Upon arrival we didn't have to wait long since the restaurant is pretty big and spacious in seats. I went to this restaurant during its soft opening and again tonight. Seafood was fresh and beef was good quality. The waitstaff smiled more often and worked hard. One of my friends asked to switch out her broth pot because it was getting too salty for her, which would be a extra charge of $1. However the section manager decided to give her a little bit of extra broth instead of giving her a "switch out". When I mentioned to our young waitress about it at the end of the dinner, she enthusiastically decided to "make it right for her customer" by going to the restaurant manager for a $1 adjustment. From across the restaurant, I could see the manager gave her a negative body language before went back to his cell phone call. When customers complain to the waitstaff, they should make it right whether the issue is only $1 or $100. When a customer spends $150 for dinner, a $1 adjustment is just a token of how well a restaurant would treat its customer. Disclaimer: I actually wanted to rate this place 3.5 stars but since you cannot do half a star I'm definitely going to round down for this one. That was the good part, let's get to the ugly. I got the spicy house broth and my friend got the regular broth. The server had our broths mixed up, my friends side of the table had spicy broth and I had the regular house broth. But she wasn't looking and put in a bunch of her seafood into her broth. I had told the server he mixed up the broths, and that my friend had already put in a bunch of her food in my broth on her side of the table and if he may take it back and give me the correct broth I ordered. He told me I had to pay an extra $1. This is where I was upset, I don't mind paying extra for my food honestly. If you know me I will pay extra for anything as long as it tastes good. But I don't see the reason why I would be paying extra for something that he had messed up on his end? It's not about the money, it's about the service. The rest of the experience was terribly self serve, he never came back to give us napkins till the very end of our meal. Firstly, the wonderful experience can be described as an AYCE for a very inexpensive price, attentive service, great food (& ice cream might I add) selection, and a collective atmosphere. 30 min wait, and I went in right at the 30min mark and they have the table for us as said. The meat was great and fresh, our waitress was quick and super responsive and friendly as well. Shabu Zone does AYCE hot pot, but what's different about them is that they do individual servings of broth, so that each person can choose the broth they prefer. Once your broth is picked out, you can pick some cuts of meat for the table. They have beef, chicken, and pork, so there's something for everyone. Following that, you go to the buffet bar to pick out vegetables and seafood. If you're only interested in eating the items from the buffet bar, then you can go with their vegetarian option which is cheaper, but doesn't provide you option of any meats. I ordered the Tonkatsu broth, and then picked out some noodles, fish balls/cakes, mushrooms, shellfish, and veggies from the bar. When I returned the broth had been brought out, and we began cooking our food in the hot broth. If your broth isn't hot enough to cook your food, each seat has their own individual set of controls for the hot plate, so that you can control whether you want to heat up your broth or just keep it warm. The controls can be found under the table and slightly to the right of where you sit. If your broth runs low you can also ask for a refill, and they'll refill it with the same broth you initially got. Overall, I enjoyed my experience there, and loved the variety of options they provided to cook in your broth. The servers were very attentive, and made sure to come by and check if we'd like to place more orders of meat. We didn't have to flag down a waiter once to place our orders or clear plates. The meats are unlimited but come out one at a time after you request what you want. There is a buffet of other hot pot ingredients including shrimp, crab and fish balls for protein. Really wide selection of mushrooms and vegetables. The only weak point is the dessert area - I'm not sure how sanitary it is to have people reaching into the freezer to scoop out ice cream. Also for some reason the speaker in the woman's restroom is really really loud, so you walk in and it's like you're rocking out in the club. Except it's a bathroom. This is one of the best hot pots in Houston AND it's a buffet! Lunch is $17 and dinner is $26. We heard that it can get really busy, so we went 30 min after the restaurant opened and had no wait. Each person gets their own personal hot pot. You get to choose one of the seven soup bases. I'm pretty sure the refills of your soup base are free, but if you want to change your soup base in the middle of your meal, it's an extra $1 charge--which is reasonable. I chose #4 which was a creamy pork broth based on the recommendations of the waiter. I thought the base was good, but not amazing.
