My husband and I recently spent a couple nights at Shade Hotel for a wedding that was taking place at the hotel. Shade Hotel is located in the marina district of Redondo Beach. The area has several boating clubs, a few seafood restaurants, hotels and event venues, and some small bars. It is definitely a quiet area that closes up early in the evenings. The hotel itself is really very lovely, though I wouldn't call it fancy. I will start by mentioning a few things that I didn't like. First, it is really too expensive. Likely it was more expensive than usual, as we booked late and they only had suites left. Also, I didn't like that the hotel restaurant and room service stop serving food at 10. Even after the wedding, when several people tried to go to the bar, around 10:30 on a Saturday, they stopped serving drinks. Further, we arrived to check into the hotel around 10PM on Friday night and were informed that all of the restaurants in the area were closing, so we had to drive to the next town over for dinner. I guess the area this hotel is located in is a bit too quiet for my taste. I also didn't like the $49 per night valet parking, with zero self-parking. Now, on a positive note, I enjoyed the welcome drinks, which were two mini strawberry daqueries... they were actually not too sweet and quite stiff. The staff was super friendly. They were always available and tried to be helpful. Whenever we went to the lobby they would give us bottled water. In the restaurant bar, they gave us free coffee and Diet Coke to take to our room. Our room wasn't overly impressive for a suite, but it was still very pretty. I loved having a view right on the harbor walkway. It was nice to walk out of the hotel and be right on the harbor. The balcony was a lovely place to sit with coffee. They also have an outdoor bathtub right on the patio. I love when beach hotels have outdoor tubs and showers. The room was comfortable with plenty of outlets and digital color-changing lighting. It was very clean and modern. All in all, I think the hotel was more expensive than we would choose had it not been for a wedding. However, I really did enjoy my stay. It was a friendly hotel with nice views and a bit of a resort vibe. read more

This continues to be a beautiful hotel, although not cheap. The beds are very comfortable. The rooms are beautiful and spacious. The bathrooms are gorgeous and very comfortable. When you go down to the lobby, they have muffins and coffee available. The vibe is lovely. The only reason I did not give it five stars but only four stars is that we ended up arriving for about an 8:30 PM check-in, and they had no 'free' parking. They had no parking whatsoever unless you valet and that was $45. So now you have a reservation that you cannot cancel, but you still have to park and you are forced to pay $45. That is not cool and that was a turn off. Therefore beautiful hotel and great location, but there are plenty like it and so we will likely consider another hotel on the next visit. read more

Did a little January solo staycation here for one night. They have valet and lots of parking, check in was easy and they offered a little frozen margarita which was tasty and cute. Room was great, so spacious with a patio and marina view and an outdoor bathtub. Great room but the smell of the seals was overwhelming and made me not want to stay out there too long. I got a voucher for food and drink and also a food credit for room service. It was nice, I think they were running a special or something. Drinks and food at the hotel restaurant were decent. There's a happy hour and the patio is perfect to catch the sunset with a marina view. There's also a rooftop pool I believe but it was a little too chilly for me at the time. Our experience with Shade Hotel and Sea Level Restaurant was incredibly disappointing from start to finish. It began while planning my bridal shower. Initially, one of the sales representatives assured us they could accommodate our event. Without any communication, she apparently left the company, and when another salesperson, Alex, took over, we were suddenly told they could not accommodate a 20-person seated bridal shower with one long table. This was especially confusing because Shade regularly advertises bridal showers and similar events on their Instagram featuring exactly this type of setup. By that point, our invitations had already been mailed, and the shower was only two weeks away. Thankfully, after speaking with a manager, they agreed to honor the original arrangement. The bridal shower itself ended up going well, and we appreciated that the manager stepped in to make it happen. Unfortunately, our experience didn't end there. As a sweet surprise, my fiancé booked a room at Shade Hotel for my sister and me to stay the night after the shower. A few days later, we were shocked to discover several incorrect charges on our bill. We were billed for an "intimacy box" containing adult products and condoms--something we absolutely did not use (and honestly made no sense considering I was sharing the room with my sister). We were also charged for chips and popcorn from the minibar, even though we had brought our own snacks and never touched those items. To make matters worse, we ordered room service for breakfast the next morning and were charged for a meal we never ordered. When we called to have these charges corrected, the customer service we received was extremely disappointing. Rather than being understanding or helpful, the employee we spoke with was rude and dismissive, which only added to an already frustrating experience. Because of everything that happened, from the confusion during event planning, to the inaccurate hotel charges, to the poor customer service--I can no longer recommend either Shade Hotel or Sea Level Restaurant. It's especially disappointing because Sea Level used to be one of my favorite places to meet friends. We also removed Shade Hotel from our wedding website as a recommended hotel for our guests, despite it being conveniently located near our venue. I rarely leave negative reviews, but I hope management takes these concerns seriously. Attention to detail and customer service matter, especially when people are trusting you with milestone events like bridal showers and wedding celebrations. read more

Update: Management responded publicly, but unfortunately the response still avoids accountability. This was not a car-to-car accident, and we were not in the vehicle. The damage occurred entirely on hotel property and was caused by a valet employee. Despite this, Shade Hotel continues to position this as solely an issue between us and their third-party valet company, rather than taking ownership of the guest experience. An apology was offered, but no compensation, no proactive resolution, and no meaningful effort to make things right. Guests should not be left to manage insurance claims and negotiations for damage that occurs on hotel property while their car is in valet care. At this point, it's clear that Shade is more focused on deflecting responsibility than standing behind the services they provide. Very disappointing. read more

Stayed at the Shade Hotel in Redondo Beach overnight for a business meeting. I had been to the Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach before, so I'm glad someone told me that it was the RB location! It's next to the Cheesecake Factory and has valet parking. We were there in the middle of the week so it wasn't busy at all. We checked in easily and I had a great view of the harbor. The rooms are really big, and modern looking, with lots of cool ambient lighting with its own separate switch. The bed and pillows were really comfortable. There was a tub on the balcony which I didn't get to use, but it was a nice thought. We had drinks on the patio outside next to the succulent wall in their restaurant across the way. During our meeting, we had food catered and it was all really good breakfast and lunch. Overall, a great place for a meeting and I'm sure it's wonderful as a place to stay if you're wanting to be right by the water. read more

Boutique hotel in Redondo with another location in Manhattan Beach. Stayed here with my family and they gave us a handicap suite for some reason, although the only thing that made it different was that there was no step into the shower. There was some confusion around the resort fee but essentially we got charged $250 upon check in, of which $160 comprised of the $40 per person resort fee, $80 for overnight valet for one night for two cars, and taxes. Valet parking is mandatory and their closest street spots that aren't metered are about a 15-20 minute walk. When we checked out, one car had to pay in cash for the partial valet fee while the other car got the fee tacked onto the final charge. They do have beach equipment and bikes you can rent, but we mostly hung at the pool. The pool was a bit disappointing as it was really small and there was no hot tub. There were lounge chairs that you can walk up to as well as bigger couches with tables that you could reserve. The pool guy was nice and brought us water bottles as it was a hot day. In terms of the room we had a lot of space and the beds were comfortable. We were able to get extra pillows and dental kits from housekeeping. For each day that you didn't do cleaning, they donate a portion for environmental causes. There's a restaurant downstairs and you get a $10 credit for dinner through the hotel if you eat there. There's a mini fridge filled with drinks for purchase but we were able to fit some leftovers in there. read more

Money-hungry dump. Resort wannabe. I was in town seeing family and needed to take a night away from the house I was staying in. I came here with my gf for a one-night stay. I booked over the phone and agreed to a room going for $300-something. When we got there I was hit with a $50 amenity fee that I wasn't told about over the phone. My girlfriend and I got to our room and I immediately decided we had to switch. We were so close to the sidewalk, anyone could've bust through our glass door or hopped onto our patio with little to no effort. I let the desk know we didn't feel good in the room. They charged me another $50 to move us to an identical room a floor up. They knew I couldn't do much about it, I was already there with all my luggage and it was late. That same evening I asked if we could get a bit of a late checkout, as it would time out better with my flight. The lady said it probably wouldn't be a problem, and to just check in the morning, but that 12:00 was included. I figured 1:00 wouldn't be a big ask at a "4 -star resort". I followed up in the late morning with a different desk guy, and he said that 1:00 would work. For $50. I paid it, again because what was I going to do...we were getting ready and assumed such a luxurioouusss resort wouldn't be so pressed over an hour. When we left I tipped the MANDATORY valet and he left me there to handle all of our bags. I later saw a charge for nearly $800 on my card and called to ask about it. They said it was because of a $350 incidental fee they take up front, which is fine if it's refunded, but I also asked about some of the other fees. The guy said the amenity fee covered the pool (which we didn't use) and equinox (which we didn't use), and included a $20 food and drink credit. I asked him to waive it because we didn't use any of their stuff, and he said no. I then asked him to just apply the $20 food and drink credit to the meals we ate at their restaurant, and he also said no, even though I apparently paid for that too. With taxes and fees, I'm currently looking at a $600 night now (although $40 of that is on us for a drink at the mini bar). Still, far off from what I thought I was signing up for. I still haven't been refunded my deposit. I wouldn't be surprised if these guys find something to make a fuss about so they can hold onto a chunk of it. The restaurant's food tastes like play-doh and my girlfriend went on a chase after our waiter disappeared for half of an hour. She couldn't find any staff at ALL in the restaurant during this time. Don't pay hotel prices for motel service. It's socal, you have plenty of other options. read more

The person working the front desk was super sweet and they even offer a cocktail upon arrival. My room had a outdoor spa area that overlooks the marina. Seeing the sunset from our rooms was breathtaking. In addition, I loved all the amenities in the room. There were bathrobes provided and the shower area was stocked with fancy shampoo and conditioner. Everything worked great in my room. But then, on my security deposit they charged me $56 for late checkout, and $44 extra which they told me When I called into ask what it was, they described it as "the tax from the late checkout fee" Hmm... let's do some basic math. $44 in "tax" on a $50 charge is a rate of 88%! Pricey but worth it. Had my son's 21st bday celebration here and the Presidential Penthouse was awesome. Had a full bar and beautiful view of the marina. Rooftop views were amazing and their restaurant serves great complimentary breakfast. I did have a hiccup with communication on when we would be arriving, the staff misunderstood and the free bday treat and complimentary food was melted and spoiled when we arrived, but the staff was nice and accommodating and refunded it. The dish I ordered said that it came with kale but did not mention that it was fried but to my surprise it was delicious! The grilled lemon made the consistency better (details matter to me) it also mentioned heirloom tomatoes but I received cherry tomatoes (details matter...taste and texture). I got there first and informed the girl checking me in that my guest would be arriving shortly. My friend had to txt me from the lobby because no one was letting her up. This hotel is beautiful, nice views of the marina. The biggest downside is that the walls are thin, heard people talking and partying all night. There is NO parking, you can only valet for $45. We had a family member with a disability and we had a handicapped placard, parked in handicap by ourselves but they still charge the $45 fee for their handicapped spots. Quite an arm and a leg if you're staying multiple days & no other option for someone who couldn't walk. Pool is also out of service until end of April so that was another downside not listed when booking. read more

I just stayed at the hotel for 4 nights. I am a local on a staycation who has been traveling a lot lately and been staying in many hotel's. I can't recommend the Shade Redondo enough. The general manager was fantastic as well as his whole staff. I felt so welcomed the minute I pulled up to the valet and the much needed delicious welcome cocktail didn't hurt either! The vibe is great, the rooms are so spacious and so well appointed. They have chargers for anything that needs charging, deep drawers to easily unpack comfy beds and the harbor views are amazing. The Sea Level Restaurant was an unassuming delight with a menu that was fitting for all appetites. All the items and flavors were AMAZING, meticulously crafted to satisfy even the most discerning. Even all the food we ordered through room service was shockingly delicious! I would come back to eat at the Sea Level restaurant even if I wasn't staying at the hotel. The ambiance and views of the marina were just perfect! Our room was spectacular, tasteful decor and modern amenities that seamlessly blend style and functionality. Every corner so well designed creating an intimate retreat within the bustling city. Our deck had an outdoor tub which we had no idea we NEEDED until we actually enjoyed our brunch and champs in it! A touch of luxury that elevated the entire weekend experience. Thank goodness we had a portable steamer which was included in our room to steam out our clothes for the evening. So useful and glad it was available. What truly sets this boutique hotel apart is its commitment to personalized service. Be ready for the hidden fees, $20 per person amenities, AND another $45 for parking. The food and bar on property are great and I loved the bed (always important). Not sure what it is about the construction, but you can hear footsteps from the floor above, which is not super uncommon, but they seemed louder than I'm accustomed. This luxury boutique hotel is right on the waterfront and is the perfect place to stay to watch the sunset. Not to mention, it's within walking distance of numerous restaurants and about one mile south of the Hermosa Beach Pier. It's also a beautiful location to have a wedding. My niece and her husband tied the knot here and it was lovely! The setup was perfect on the rooftop where they shared their personal vows to one another against the loveliest sunset backdrop. After the ceremony, a variety of staff members came out to serve an array of hors d'oeuvres along with two different signature cocktails. They even went above and beyond for my brother in-law who asked if the hotel had any pain-relievers. One of the servers later came back to hand him one in a sealed package. Now that's service! I really love the whole concept of having the ceremony and cocktails on the rooftop followed by the reception on the second floor. I also loved the fact that they had lounge chairs and firepits on the rooftop and on the second floor at the reception which kept guests comfortable and warm.
