First visit and we'll definitely be back This was our first time at Shades Bar & Grill, and it was a great experience. We went with a group of seven and everything from the atmosphere to the food made it a really fun night out. The location and vibe are fantastic -- lively but relaxed, the kind of place where you can easily settle in with friends and enjoy a good meal. We started with appetizers for the table: calamari, onion rings, and volcano shrimp. All three disappeared quickly. The calamari was really good and normally comes served over jalapeños, but since I don't eat them the kitchen kindly put them on the side for us. The onion rings were fantastic, and the volcano shrimp had a little heat (which the spice lovers at the table really liked). For dinner I had the hibachi steak over fried rice with yum-yum sauce, cooked medium. It was excellent -- tender, flavorful, and a generous portion. Others in our group ordered the same dish and loved it as well. The chicken nachos were huge (normally an appetizer but easily a full meal) with really tasty queso that had a bit of spice. The burger and flatbreads at the table also got great reviews. We also tried the chocolate dessert bomb at the end (not sure of the exact name), and it was fantastic -- chocolate mousse and cake inside a chocolate shell with whipped cream. Definitely worth sharing. The drinks were great, the service was friendly, and the whole place had a welcoming feel. One thing we really appreciated as well: they offer a military discount, which was a nice touch. We're locals and this was our first visit, but it definitely won't be our last. I had not been to Shades in years since it was located at Seaside. This location at Philip's Inlet is excellent, spacious, plenty of parking, and offers indoor or patio dining. I went with a long-time friend for lunch and chose the redfish sandwich. I loved it. It had a fresh bun, a freshly fried filet of fish with very light breading, seasoned well and topped with slaw and tomato. The atmosphere was casual yet classy. Shades is by far one of our favorite restaurants along 30A. We have made it a point to eat here at least twice every time we come to the beach for vacation. Our fave is the chicken nachos! Get them! They are by far the best. Go for an early dinner if in the high season to help cut down the wait because everyone loves Shades. I also recommend the bam bam shrimp. While visiting Rosemary Beach, my husband and young adult sons stopped in at Shades for dinner - somewhat on a whim. We were quite hungry, hadn't planned well, and Shades was conveniently located and not too crowded. Our server, Mike, was very friendly and personable and was quite helpful in figuring out what to order. This has been our best meal yet, although all have been good, on 30A! The guys split Mahi Tacos and the fried fish & shrimp dinner. They've had shrimp at every restaurant so far, and Shades' shrimp was the best of the best! If a restaurant and bar could be stuck in the 80s serving model idea "we can do anything" Shades is on that era. In my day you could go to places that serve anything and get good food no matter what you ordered. It was my mistake to think this business model still works. Shades proved to me, I'm wrong. The bar and restaurant that serves all and does it well is very dead. I had chicken nachos and they were terrible. The chicken was so dry I couldn't even choke it down. I paid up charge for avocado, sour cream and jalapeños. Thank goodness I did or I wouldn't have had anything to eat. My son ordered the white cheese flatbread pizza and was more than satisfied. Unfortunately.. for me... our check was $45 and I drank water. I guess that really my complaint. I am floored you can pay $45 for two people to eat without alcohol and still get terrible food. We basically ordered what used to be called appetizers and paid meal prices. This isn't really a dog at Shades per se but the price of eating out in general. I believe Shades did the best they could. However at this rate I'll need a second mortgage to continue eating appetizers. read more

We're local to Freeport, so we don't come this way too often but after visiting here on Sunday we certainly will! Even with a decent wait time, we managed to still get a table after only waiting briefly. The vibes were awesome. The restaurant itself was very clean, bathrooms were clean also. The food was delicious. My mom is from out of state and was very impressed. Our server was amazing (the ticket said J Kirkland). While the food was decent, some of it lacked flavor and there was no ordering items on the lunch menu that we had seen previewed because it was after 5pm so we couldn't really get what we wanted. The prices are reasonable within a fair range for dinner but several fees were added to our bill that seemed silly and honestly just irritating. (ie: a "non-cash adjustment" because we paid with a credit card) Over all just not worth a second visit and kind of wish we would have chosen somewhere else. read more
