I usually always stay at branded hotels for peace of mind... however this time passing through and being very tired and sleepy decided to stay over this place... you know there is a saying that goes something like... you always find little gem when Lease expected... well this is definitely not Holiday Inn Express or Marriott... but 10x better then rest of the local motels around the area... Stayed in Room # 11. It was two queen bed... very spacious room with Refrigerator and microwave... they have nice Rose garden... big playing area for kids and beautiful mountain behind the property... no one can ever tell this place is over 100 years old... Where they are behind in these big hotels, Sam and his wife definitely makes up for it with they amazing customer service and knowledge for everything to do around Roseburg ... they truly made us feel like we were at home... Ohh and they have parking space for RVs and trucks. thanks we will be back next year... read more

I just stayed here overnight on a road trip, leaving early the next morning, so my experience was brief. The room was a bit dated, but large and clean for the price. No strange smells or questionable stains. All of the utilities worked, and there was a mini fridge as well as a microwave. If you need to charge anything via usb, bring a wall charger, as there is nothing in the room designed to charge usb devices. There was an older model flatscreen TV. You get an actual key to lock/unlock the room, so you need to return it to the desk when you're checking out. I did really appreciate the fact that all parking in front of the rooms is covered by a large awning, so in the event that it's raining you don't need to worry about getting soaked when loading/unloading your car. There isn't really anything in walking distance as far as food/gas, but it is still in a convenient location as far as being right off of the freeway. The owners live onsite and are very courteous. Not a bad place to hang your hat for the night if you are on the road. read more

I hadn't planned on staying in Roseburg but circumstances arose and I had to book a couple rooms. I did an internet search for hotels and this came as the best deal and I'm grateful I found this place. The rooms are big, clean and close to the parking which I appreciate because I ride a custom motorcycle and I like being able to keep an eye on my bike when traveling. They have a very friendly staff and I will definitely stay here again on my next trip through Oregon. read more

Don't stay in a lot of motels, so chose this one based on price (turned out to be a great bargain) and location (just a mile outside of town but further from the freeway than many other motels in town,) Clean room, comfortable bed. If you prefer avoiding big chain motels, this place is great. I'm definitely returning if I need a place to stay in the Roseburg area. PROS: Spotless bathroom, huge rooms, covered parking right with designated spots in front of room, quiet (1 exit south of Roseburg proper, sort of in grasslands/hilly area), a lot of mirrors which was neat, microwave&fridge, hot water maker, big TV, good wi-fi signal. It is an older building so this is no Motel 6, but if you don't mind a little funkiness it is great. Old 50s tile in shower was beautiful. Family-owned and operated. Owners were super nice and accommodating. Thoughtfully placed me two doors away from a family with kids just in case there was a noise issue. CONS: Needs new carpet -even if vacuumed, really old carpet just looks bad. Desperately needs new shower curtains. Musty smell in the shower, mold somewhere I think. It was clean, so I am thinking mold in the vents or drain maybe? SPECIAL NEEDS NOTE: Showers require a step up about one foot. read more

Quaint, nice, clean, big rooms, reasonably priced (AAA), with only 12 units. Some traffic noise from Highway 99. We heard exactly one short, slow train. They are improving the sitting area under those shady oaks. Our room had a fridge & microwave. Our bathroom didn't have a bathtub, but the shower had a place to sit. While we didn't have a pet with us, they are pet-friendly with an area to walk a dog. read more

Starting with the positive first: Super nice price rate, staff was polite and attentive, hotel was located out off the beaten path so it was very quiet and in a peaceful setting, looked quaint and cute from the outside, free wi-fi and the sidewalks and outer building looked clean, though rustic and old school. We really like old school and rustic so were happy with the setting. Now for some constructive criticism (I don't criticise just for the sake of complaining.. I want it to possibly help) that could possibly help this place out. Upon entering, our room looked reasonably okay at first sight, and considering we only had to spend $59, I was prepared for 'get what you pay for'. However, once we were in our room and started to unpack, there was a smell that I could not figure out, urine? gas leak? ammonia? and it became nauseating the longer I was in there. I brought this up to my husband and he agreed that there was a funky smell going on. Being the problem solving and tolerant people we are, we quickly aired out the room by opening windows and turning the a/c unit on. It was then sort of 'livable' until I had to use the bathroom. I then realized that this is where the smell was originating, specifically the shower curtain and tiled stall. It was obvious that the curtain had mildew on it as it was pink/orange at the bottom rather than the original white? Instead of freaking out, which I sort of did and then reigned it in, we immediately took the curtain off the hooks and stuffed it into a plastic bag and put it into a closed closet for the night. I like to think we are problem solvers but this angered and frustrated me that we had to do this in order to make this space 'livable' and sanitary for a few hours. It's such a simple fix to sanitize the shower curtains with bleach and wash out the shower with a bleach detergent. I'm not a prissy chick who can't stand grub. I camp in dirt and use porta potties but I was really grossed out by the whole shower curtain experience and because we were only intending to sleep there one night and the sheets were clean, (not the bed covers though, they had visible stains on them which could easily be removed by washing them? but I put them on the couch immediately and used the blanket and pillow I brought) , it was tolerable. We went out for dinner but before returning to the motel, we stopped at the Wal mart and bought deodorizing room spray, deodorizing candles, and a Renuzit stand alone deodorizer for the bathroom. I waited in the car while my husband went in and sprayed. So basically , whatever money we saved on the room was wasted on such nonsense to make our rented space livable. This isn't so cool. After a sleepless night thinking we were hearing weird noises, we woke to a frig full of frozen brown ice. Apparently the in room refrigerator had been set to highest level possible, and all of our pop cans ended up freezing and bursting inside the frig during the night. So on top of the sleepless night, we had a nice little frozen mess to clean up in the morning which we did due to being considerant people. Sigh. Will I ever stay there again or recommend it to anyone? sadly no way, unless they take their negative, and hopefully useful, reviews to heart and actually make some changes. read more

We stayed here in August when we went to Wildlife Safari and back-to-school shopping. The staff was nice enough. We asked for extra pillows which they obliged. Check-in was fast considering I booked with Expedia.com. The price was crazy outrageous for what we got. $129.99 for 2 queens, microwave, fridge, and a shower. The couple that run (own?) Shady Oaks were very nice, polite, and accommodating. We stayed there a couple nights ago without a reservation and they gave us the same low rate we saw on Booking.com. Room was clean, bedding was clean, pillows were puffy, and bathroom was spotless. It's not the Ritz but it's on par with any roadside hotel/motel in the area. We stayed there last weekend and it was a very nice experience. It is one of those mid-20th century motor courts with covered parking and really LARGE rooms. I think there are fewer than twenty rooms total. They are AAA rated. We first saw a non-smoking room and it was very nicely appointed. We stayed in a smoking room though. It was slightly less well appointed, but we also had a 90lb dog with us so it was probably not the best they had. Still, it was fine and the beds were comfortable. The shower had a two foot lip at the entry, with two-tone tile work. Tres 50's. Very cool. Sam, the owner, is a relaxed and happy guy, and will chat you up about his granddaughter and family. The Wi-Fi was fast as could be and rock solid! We had broken down, and were unsure if our car would be ready the next day. Sam offered to hold our bags at the desk for the day until we knew if we would be there another night. If you want a relaxing night at a reasonable price, with a throw back to the days of big rooms and great service, Shady Oaks is a good choice IMO. We would happily stay again. read more

I had a quiet and peaceful nights rest and found the couple who ran the place friendly and helpful. The room was older but was clean and in good shape. This isn't a high end resort but that wasn't what I needed. It was inexpensive and beat those new sterile awful motel 6s hands down. I would definitely stay here again. read more

Reading the other reviews about this place, I didn't have much of the unfortunate things that have received ire from people. I rather enjoyed my stay here. The staff (at least the man who attended to me) was quite friendly and ensured I knew everything I needed to know about the heater, the lights, etc. The room itself was rustic but not unpleasant, and I found the beds and bathroom accommodations all in order. The shower was smallish, but it served its warming and cleaning purpose. I did not need to use the other utilities like the fridge and microwave, but they appeared operational when I looked at them. Television and Wi-Fi is offered, however I used neither, so I cannot comment on that. I paid about sixty-five dollars for a two bed arrangement, and that was with a small discount as long as only one bed was used. All in all, I did not have a bad experience here, and I'm certain I shall stay here again in the future. read more

Well this is the NASTIEST motel I've EVER stayed in.. First of all the woman that checked me in (a foreign lady for which I can only assume was the owner) insisted that I pay for my room in Cash Only which I thought was weird... Then I made sure it was a pet friendly place since I have a service animal... Thats when she said she wanted me to stay in the only room they have upstairs and the only room you have to actually go behind the building... I felt very judged at this point but she already had my cash so what could I do? I then proceeded to follow a very narrow walkway to the unsafe stairs.... I got to the sliding glass doors and found out that door wasnt even locked and that it wont lock then I stepped inside and the overwhelming smell made me want to puke literally... The carpet smelled like it wreaked of urine... The room telephone was on the floor in the entranceway... The small frig was unplugged and the door was kept open by a chair next to it... The microwave was unplugged... There was a creepy door by the bed that had a padlock and duct tape on it and my dog kept looking in that direction the entire time and there was lots of times that I thought I heard someone behind that door... The best part of this evening was when the foreign woman called up to my room and told me that my daughter and husband could not stay more than 5 to 10 minutes otherwise she was going to charge me $10.00 per person.... Now that was BS... They brought me food and wanted to have dinner with me but not after that phone call... I dont know what else to do besides make this report so people BEWARE read more

Do NOT stay here. Shady is a good name for this place. They threatened to charge my credit card for a night I didn't stay. When I told them that was credit card fraud they yelled at me, then hung up on me. They advertise rooms for $39.99 to draw in customers, then when you go to pay it becomes $65 because of some bogus "tax". My boyfriend has dreads and the unfriendly Indian couple running the place put us in the room directly next to them in the office so they could keep an eye/ear on us. Thin walls, we could hear arguing and them using the bathroom. We went into office because the internet didn't work, and the man actually snapped at his wife in front of us and she shuffled back into their room. To top it off, all it had was a space heater and it was chilly. But at least it was clean! read more

One of our friends recommended this place to us. We stayed for 2 days while driving from California to Seatlle. Our stay was totally calm and peaceful. This motel has a great garden area in the front. The rooms were clean and comfortable with a microwave and fridge. The service was warm and friendly. I wasn't sure if they would have internet serice, but they had that available which was all the more helpful... We couldn't ask for more. read more

If there was a way to rate this motel in the negatives, I'd have to give it a solid -5 rating. From the moment we checked in, to the minute we left the parking lot, my family was treated to a level of customer service rivaled only by internment camps and 18th century mental hospitals. The lady at the front desk made sure to inform us (after she had run our card and booked us for a 3 day stay of course) that we needed to be extremely careful to make sure that our kids (4 & 8) only used the remote control to operate the television because if they touched the actual television, they "might get electrocuted". She also let us know that we needed to put the telephone up on a high shelf, presumably so the children didn't play with it either, although at least there was no mention of electrical shock with the phone. Last but not least, we were informed that it was our job to empty the bags from the trash cans and take them to the dumpster across the parking lot. Now, the rooms are fairly cheap, right around $75 plus tax, but not enough of a price discount to justify providing your own housekeeping while making sure your kids don't pull a green mile on themselves by trying to find cartoon network. It was the 4th of July holiday and there were no other rooms to be had though, so we decided to grit our teeth and try to make the best of things. Next morning, we get a knock on the door bright and early and opened it to find the husband of the front desk lady standing there, visibly irritated. He informed us that my car had apparently sprung an oil leak and that it needed to be moved to the far end of the lot on the grass, which we had no problem doing as the leak was news to us as well. About an hour later, I walked outside and saw the man brushing some cat litter over the oil stain and I approached him and offered my sincere apologies for the car leaking oil and causing him extra work. His response was to snap at me and accuse me of being negligent, telling me that I needed to either get a new car or get mine repaired, and then adding the bewildering statement that "you know, in this country, your apologies mean nothing" Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that there weren't any other rooms available in the area, I would have packed up my family right then and reversed the charges on my card for the room, and I almost wish now after the fact that I had, because as unbelievable as it seems, there was even more BS to come. The next day, I went out to grab some food from the grocery store for lunch, and upon returning, I was greeted by my son who was panicked. I soon found out why: He had used the toilet and when he flushed it, it overflowed. Now the toilet had been acting like it was going to back up the whole time we were there, but it would fill partially up and then it would drain down again finally, so it was obviously their old shoddy plumbing that was the problem. Anyway, as soon as it overflowed on him, my son went directly to the office and got the lady. She had just shown up as I walked in with groceries and when I asked what had happened, she narrowed her eyes, pointed her finger at my son and screeched accusingly : "HE DID SOMETHING" "HE DID SOMETHING TO THE TOILET!" I had just about enough of both of their crap right about then, and I proceeded to challenge her, asking her what on earth she thought my son "did" to the toilet to break it when it was already acting like it wanted to back up when we got here...Not missing a beat, this woman turned it on me, proclaiming that it was MY fault because if the toilet was slow on flushing, I should have brought it to their attention sooner. Then this audacious woman had the nerve to start trying to boss my son around, telling him that he needed to bag up the garbage and carry it to the dumpster...I lost it and told her to get the heck out of our room and that she had no business telling my son what to do especially in light of the way she had already freaked him out with her bizarre behavior. Seriously, in a normal place, if something like that happened, they would maybe even apologize to you for the inconvenience, but at the shady oaks, you get yelled at. Then she told us that since she wouldn't be able to get a plumber there in time to fix it, that my children, my husband and I would have to use the bathroom next door in the room we had for our family friend that was traveling with us. That's right...we paid for 2 rooms for 3 days time there, and we weren't even offered to switch to a room with a working bathroom even though they had vacant rooms the whole time we were there. You might be thinking that there can't possibly be even more to tell, but unfortunately, you'd be wrong. Sad thing is I don't even have enough room to include all the insulting and disrespectful treatment we experienced at this flea bag dive. If I had the choice to make again, I'd sleep in my car in a parking lot before I gave them one cent of my money. read more
