Wow! This was a great first experience for me trying authentic Indian food! We had a pretty large group (10 ish) on a Sunday afternoon - the staff were super friendly. They had a lot of options - since it was my first time I decided to go with butter chicken, vegetable samosas, and garlic naan. It was DELICIOUS! I could eat so much of that naan, it was great. I finally got the chance to watch out at Shahi Indian Grill and I can't wait to go back! I ordered the spicy chicken vindaloo with a piece of garlic naan. I had the chicken tikka marsala with a spice level 3 and it was delicious and the perfect amount of spicy for me! The food portion is great and they packed up another box of rice for us to take home with our leftovers. We also had the garlic naan which was delicious! The service was excellent. I love this restaurant! They have a "Vegetarian dinner for 2" which is less than $40. It includes so much delicious food, honestly the server had to convince me that I was actually reading the menu correctly. Note: that particular deal is only good for dine-in customers. Service is great, it's a pleasant place to be. Located right by the downtown park, so you can go for a nice walk after your meal, or maybe just sit on a swinging bench if you are too full. read more

Indian is my favorite type of food, and unfortunately Shahi did not pass the test. My go-to dishes at new places are either madras or vindaloo, so here I tried chicken vindaloo. They need to change the menu wording--it is not "very hot" but rather pretty bland, and soupy; to me vindaloo should be more of a paste. The fact that it was tossed in a smooth creamy tomato sauce seemed like it was more of an instant (not homemade) base for the curry like you get in frozen Indian dishes, or perhaps they use it for multiple dishes. There was enough chicken, but the sauce ruined it for me. Garlic naan was underwhelming as well and seemed like a frozen kind. Soup was also not included with entrees which is another downside, although according to their menu their mulligatawny has meat in it, so I'm not sure about that...it shouldn't. Ambiance is pretty fancy, and we came at a pretty slow time before heading to the Orpheum to a show, and service was okay. Best part of the meal for me was sadly my Taj Mahal. I got the combo app because i wanted to try a little of everything. The mint chutney and mango chutney complemented the fried apps really well. For my main meal, I got the madras chicken. Thank you Yelp for helping a business traveler who missed the last flight of day to enjoy a night in Downtown Omaha. What a great restaurant! The menu is diverse without being overwhelming. Lots of vegan and vegetarian options. I appreciated being able to order my food at a 6 out of 10 spice level - just perfect with my tall, cold beer. Garlic naan is light and tasty. The Masala is creamy and flavorful. Portion size was perfect if not a bit too much with a generous serving of rice. I dined late on a Thursday night and although there were others in the booths in front and behind me, the noise level was fine. They forgot one of my Naan and instead of extra sauce, they gave be a container of raw onions. So, I lost out on $8 spent... Chicken was just a chopped/cubed breast rather than pulled fresh chicken (a preference). We asked for a hot and a mild version. Neither was marked. I was looking for a dinner spot within walking distance of our hotel while in town for work. I love Indian food and don't get it often enough so we decided to try this place. We went early in the evening (around 5 PM) and there were only a couple other tables seated. It's a very nice looking space. Serene and peaceful. The server was very helpful and letting us know the answers to all our menu questions. I ordered the lamb madras at a level 8.5. And it was delicious! It wasn't super hot. Maybe next time I would try a nine. We also had the garlic naan based on all the great yelp ratings and I would say that is a must try. We started with the vegetable samosas, and we both thought those were worth, ordering again also. Unfortunately, my coworker had a Hair in her entrée. The staff was super nice about getting her a new one made right away. But I don't think her experience was as good as mine. I didn't want to eat in front of her and she wanted to go back to the hotel so we just packed everything up and, took it back to the hotel. Had this restaurant the first time in Sioux City Iowa and I really loved the biryani. It was good also in omaha but was hoping to have as many raisins. Th yogurt is so good and the lamb was great too. Next time I will ask for more raisins it really makes the dish. read more

My husband and I come downtown to eat here as often as we can. We get the basic butter chicken and chicken tikka masala with garlic naan. Every time, without fails, it is simply delicious. We used to go to location in Sioux Falls, SD years and years ago. So when they opened one here in Omaha, it quickly became a frequent stop. It's much busier now than when it first opened. Went to Shahi on the recommendation that "this is the best Indian food" he's ever had. I agree. I ordered the lamb madras and chicken korma with garlic naan for carry out. The madras and korma came in plastic to-go tubs and the naan was packaged in its own paper bag. Both the madras and korma had plenty of spice (moderate) and had plenty of flavor. I could go on, but we didn't have anything but great dishes. Zero hesitation in ordering again. And their packaging and marketing was on point, super professional. On a road trip we stopped in and were pleasantly surprised. It was delicious. There were no momos (Indian dumplings). There was a weird smell in the entryway and by the bathrooms. Also, there is a water fountain, which is nice but makes a lot of background noise. One of the people with us wears hearing aids and it was hard for that person to hear the conversation. Despite living blocks away, I haven't tried Shahi until this past week. Unfortunately, I personally won't be back unless I'm craving Indian food and can't be bothered to drive to my go-to restaurants. That said, I think this is a compelling restaurant in general due to its location, and the flavors are suitable for a more muted palate. If you've enjoy Indian food and have lived in larger cities/dined in India, Shahi will miss the mark. I ordered vegetable pakora, lamb vindaloo (hot), and garlic naan. Of these, the naan was the best. It's a refreshingly generous portion, and the garlic bits/flavor was robust. The pakora was not like anything I've had before. If you're looking for bits of identifiable vegetables lightly battered and fried, you will be disappointed. My guess is they process some combination of vegetables into a purée/paste like consistency, then batter and fry those. They were fairly tasty, but it felt like I was eating fried mashed vegetables, and it looked that way too. Maybe I'm wrong, but I prefer a more rustic pakora. As for the lamb vindaloo, this is where I think I am most justified in my disappointment. I ordered a spicy heat level because I enjoy that, but this tasted... mild. I didn't even break a sweat. The lamb to potato ratio was also a bit stingy for the price, even accounting for prime downtown rent overhead. But where I take the biggest issue was the sauce base. Mine had the consistency of soup. Every curry dish I've had in any Indian restaurant has been fairly thick. Thick enough to scoop onto a piece of naan. In fairness, I haven't had Indian food in India. But I've had plenty in other major cities, including London, and the consistency has never been anywhere as runny as it was at Shahi. Maybe it was an off-day in the kitchen- I don't know. What I do know is that there are a lot of restaurants in the area that I've yet to try before I'd need to think about circling back to Shahi. But if you prefer a non-spicy soup-like curry, you may crave an experience like mine. read more
