I checked out this new ramen place today. I had the hiyashi ramen and side gyoza. The restaurant is clean and the staff are friendly. The food is not bad. Everything is cooked well and flavorful. But nothing stood out out as "wow". That said, maybe I will come back again and try and try something more ramenish. I'll update my review if I do. read more

We recently tried Shaka Ramen (located next to Jenny's Barber and Young's Kal-Bee) recently for the first time. Cliff notes: good value, average food, and below average service. I got the Mini Shoyu Ramen two (2) choice combo with a mini curry and spam katsu (two pieces). While coming in at just over $14, the value was there but the food was quite average. The shoyu ramen broth was good, but the rest of the ramen was nothing to write home about. The curry was standard curry, with one large piece of potato and one large piece of carrot included. Spam Katsu was also nothing interesting or special. Unfortunately, the service was a little rough. Timing of the dishes was not very good (approximately fifteen minutes from the first dish dropping to the second), so if you're polite and wait for your table mates to receive their food before you start eating, you might be having your entree cold. Another issue was not being told that they didn't have a certain dish until about twenty five (25) minutes AFTER we ordered it. Also of note is the server dropping the check without confirming we didn't want to order anything else. It gives the vibes of "we want you out of our restaurant". A silver lining was that the waitress kept our waters filled, so there's something. Highs: Mini ramen two choice combo is a deal with lots of variety. Shaka Ramen was the only Ramen place open (till11:30pm) on a Saturday night after we watched the movies. It was slightly chilly today, so my husband and I craved some Ramen...of course. Although Shaka Ramen was the ONLY choice at this late hour, it certainly "hit the spot!" The menu had a lot to choose from. Since I was still full of popcorn, I optioned for the mini ramen, with a FREE side dish of gyoza (or drink) just for writing this review, which I would have done anyway...so it was a win for me!! The restaurant was spacious and well lit, and the tables weren't overly crowded. We were greeted upon arrival and seated quickly by the friendly server (didn't catch her name). There were two other couples in the restaurant when we arrived. One couple was just finishing up and they appeared to be satisfied customers as they thanked the server twice. The other couple were slurping the ramen up, which triggered my husband's appetite! Expecting a mini serving, I received a large portion but just in a slightly smaller bowl...another win for me! If you like garlic, you should definitely add a generous sprinkle of the dried garlic to top off your ramen. The garlic was in the blue condiment cups on the table. I ate the mini tan tan and my husband had the Gamoku. We both enjoyed the delicious Ramen bowls and the gyoza side dish. From the time we walked in till the time we left, was approximately 30 minutes!! Our late night dinner was a great experience here at Shaka Ramen. A solid option for ramen in Aiea, unfortunately the place is showing some wear. Came in for lunch on a Saturday and I was greeted immediately by the hostess and given my choice of table. Sadly, many of the chairs in the restaurant are in a rough shape with the seat material sagging or the wooden bottoms cracked. I hope they can fix or replace the chairs soon. I ordered their Tonkotsu Ramen and a 6 piece side of Gyoza. The ramen toppings include 3 pieces of char siu, half a seasoned egg, baby bak choy, a generous amount of bamboo shoots, a slice of fish cake, green onions, and 2 thin sheets of nori. Interestingly, they list peanut butter as an ingredient in the broth and I wondered if it would be noticeable. We'll, it's not a dominant flavor but it is there. It adds a bit of sweetness and nuttyness. The char siu is tender, and the egg is seasoned and cooked well. The noodles are cooked perfectly with a good chew and very tasty. I added some crunchy garlic halfway through and it added a nice boost to the flavor. The Gyoza is nicely cooked and very tasty. The filling is a mix of pork and veggies. The wrappers are a medium thickness with a good chew. I wished there was a little more filling in each gyoza piece, but still overall they were very good. Lots of menu options and varieties of ramen. You can also sub udon noodles for an extra charge. In the end I'd give them 3.5 stars. Fix or replace the chairs and it's a 4. Recommended. read more

Me and the wifey needed dinner for this cold wet Mililani night. Check the Yelp app for noodles and this place came up with very good reviews! So we drove from Mililani to Aiea to try this place out. We ordered 4 plates between us to try out the new place. We ordered the black garlic ramen, charsiu ramen, zaru soba, and lastly the mochiko chicken curry. We both agreed that the ramen dishes were both very good. However the mochiko chicken curry plate would be a 2/5. Surprised by the portion size and the rice. The rice was dry and undercooked. So that ruined the whole plate for us. Better places to eat if I'm being honest. This first experience will be our last time. read more

Decided to look for a ramen place close by for lunch. This location used to be daiichi. They are located under the planet fitness and next to Trina's beauty supply. We arrived right when they opened. The lady working was very nice, she came over and brought utensils and took our order quickly. I order the mini shoyu ramen with a mini fried rice. Ramen- i didn't care for the noodles. It reminded me of chow mein noodles, kind of hard (not cooked good) and it tasted a little floury (like the noodles wasn't washed). The broth however was really yummy! There was also one fish cake and one piece of meat (in my picture is 2 fish cake and no meat because i gave the meat to a friend and got her fish cake). Fried Rice- was amazing! Shaka Ramen is in the former Daiichi Ramen space in the Aiea plaza makai of Moanalua Road. I actually searched for "ramen near me" on Yelp. Shaka Ramen, I think, is actually Sakawa. It's cold tonight (70 deg. up in Halawa). My wife and I both were thinking of a savory bowl of hot soup for dinner. I ordered takeout: She wanted the char siu udon, and I ordered the combo of tonkatsu ramen, mini fried rice, and gyoza. Tonkatsu ramen was very minimalist in its offering: Noodles, soup, 1 piece of pink-white fishcake and 1 piece of Japanese style char siu. The broth! And the perfect noodles made up for the sparse condiments. Noodles were nice and chewy and the broth, savory with just the right amount of saltiness. Now the sides (part of the combo special): Gyoza - 4 pieces, good as far as gyoza is concerned. The FRIED RICE, now that was the star. Bits of egg, fishcake, and pork dispersed amongst the rice. Perfectly seasoned with obvious wok hay, it was delicious and a big portion for a "mini" to boot. Enough for breakfast tomorrow. My wife slurped up her char siu udon and said it was great. There was a healthy amount of char siu and menma (simmered bamboo shoot). Everything was nicely packed, including the manuahi bag - nice touch. This is the 3rd name (owner too?) change in the past 7 years, and not much really changes. That's a good thing since we've enjoyed the food here under all the names. I will have to say that the subtle dining room changes this time were much needed. I'm pretty sure it's been freshly painted, there are a few new wall decor items to dress up the walls, and a roll-down dividing panel sits between the cooking and dining area. While it never bothered me to see the cooks working from where I sat, it does take the restaurant up a notch from Panda Express. Service was excellent. I noticed just one server taking care of the small dining room, and she was very attentive to all the tables. My beef curry udon was good, but I'm not sure it's 5-star good. The side dishes are a great bargain especially for takeout. There are only a few parking stalls in the front of the restaurant, but ample free parking in the back. Shaka Ramen will stay on our short list of casual go-to restaurants. read more

The staff are attentive 90% of the time. Parking is very convenient; a nice little spot if you just want something warm to fill you up. The ramen is okay; kinda bland for my tastes but don't ask for extra seasoning or else they'll put a ton of salt in your ramen lol. The second time I took my parents. My mom ordered the garlic ramen and she said it did not have any garlic flavoring. My dad had the tan tan and said it was just "OK". I had the shoyu ramen and shared with my daughters. It was ok, but nothing spectacular. The fried rice was shared and was too hard and dry. The front of the house was a single girl who served, bused tables, and managed take out and register. She did great! So, overall my experience was a 3/5. Recently we ordered from here again. I had the mapo tofu which was the most disgusting thing. It was cornstarch thickened spicy sauce with tofu cubes. There was no meat. It was just chili flakes and goopy salty sauce. For this alone I will likely never eat here again. I am not sure if there was a different cook on that night, but even my daughters refused to eat their ramen and my husband and mom and dad said their food tasted poorly as well.
