This was my third time eating at/food from Forty Niner, and I was really hoping that my review would get better with time. I would say that Forty Niner is a great place to get the bang for your buck in terms of pricing for their food, but I will say that the quality of the food isn't as great as it's presented on their ordering site, Beluga. Today, my husband and I chose to do takeout and ordered three things: The Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Chorizo Hash, and the Molokai Loco Moco. For the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, the lemon taste was pretty concentrated in the middle of the pancake/not well distributed and we couldn't really taste the ricotta flavor, but it was pleasantly sweet (not too sweet). For the Chorizo Hash, I was a little bit sad that it wasn't very flavorful and the Chorizo wasn't well cooked. The Molokai Loco Moco's flavor receives the same review as the Chorizo Hash; although it was special/the first time we'd had Loco Moco like that, it was pretty soggy/watery and lacked flavor. The food itself in my opinion gets a 3.5/5, but because they were timely and friendly as a staff, I'm bumping our review up to a 4! We all ordered the same burger. Double cheese burger deluxe with dirty sauce The Grilled Apostle: 6/10 Ordered the double cheeseburger deluxe with dirty sauce from Forty Niner Restaurant. It looked huge and inviting. The burger itself tasted good as it was cooked with bread mixed in it to make it soft but once you started eating it, the burger fell apart. The bun was thin so it was messy as the sauce and burger started falling out and you needed a lot of napkins. Some people like it messy but it's not my thing. The onions and pickles were a perfect match. Too much American cheese. ________________________________________________ The Premium Purists: 5/10 I was looking forward to trying the burger at Forty Niners and hoped it would be an old fashioned/traditional style deluxe burger. It definitely had the look and right toppings but the patty was a little disappointing. After my first two bites the patties crumbled into pieces and the texture seemed off. It was too mushy and lacked good beef flavor. After learning they mix breadcrumbs in their burger patty, I think the patties I got were not mixed well and the ratio of beef and breadcrumb was off. That is probably why the texture was off, it lacked beef flavor, and crumbled. I would honestly give it another try and go with a single patty. ________________________________________________ The stack analyst: 7/10 Tried the double cheeseburger(dirty style) at 49ers and it was delicious. The fried pickles were the highlight for me. I love fried pickles and they worked really well on the burger. They also didn't hold back on the caramelized onions, which added flavor. The burger had four slices of cheese, so it was definitely rich. The patty had a nice sear on the outside, it did fall apart though. I would've liked a little more salt, but I know that comes down to preference. Bun was nothing special, just your standard setup, but it got the job done. The biggest downside was the bun--it fell apart after the first bite, making the rest of the meal messy. Excellent customer service! The young woman that took our order was really nice and helpful, and patient with us as we asked about the menu. Customer service on its own was 5 stars. We ended up getting a corned beef hash and eggs plate with hash browns, side scrambled eggs with a side of rice, and a forty niner breakfast (Portuguese Sausage, eggs and fried rice). The corned beef hash was a little too sweet for me, but it was perfectly cooked! My eggs and hash browns were also perfectly cooked. My granddaughters eggs were a little too soft scrambled so I shared my eggs with her since mine were scrambled well. We didnt sit in but chose to take it home. Something we need to do again because the food was so ono! They have written specials and a wide range menu from breakfast, bunch, and lunch. We came on a Friday morning and service was quick! We walked up to the window and ordered right away. Had the strawberry guava sweet bread French toast, ube waffles and fried chicken, cornbeef patty loco moco, cheeseburger and side of fries. Brah. Everything was good! Ive never had this spin of strawberry Guava sweet bread French toast before, also topped with fresh strawberries! Ube waffles was ono! But since it was in the container on our drive home. We must have gone on a bad day. First time visit to Forty Niner after living on this side of the island for most of my life, and wife's first time visit as well. She got the pancakes. Waitress/cashier didn't bring any syrup. Had to ask the cook in the back to ask the waitress to bring it. And the pancakes were burnt on the bottom, rendering them tough and inedible. My corned beef hash had the consistency of lumpy instant mashed potatoes. Fried rice was meh. And heck man, please fix the bathroom door - it can't close because it is crooked and therefore there is a crack about two inches. The only thing sort of good was the Green River, but can you please put more ice cubes in the glass? It was warm within one minute after the ice melted down. Wife fully regretted putting 20% tip on the tab through the QR app when she ordered. And in reference to other Yelpers liking the customer service, that one rates one star as well. The Forty Niner Restaurant in Aiea, Honolulu, is an exceptional experience. It is for anyone who wants to experience really local cuisine. Opened in 1947, the Forty Niner offers a selection of local fairs like saimin , loco moco, furikake salmon, taro sweetbread French toast and hamburgers for the less adventurous. The service is mixed - place your order at the front counter and wait at a table for service. But, the staff is wonderful. Ambiance? The Forty Niner is in a small building that has about 7 or 8 tables inside and a few more on the back patio. It has a simple, local atmosphere. I've heard so many great things about 49er restaurants and I have attempted to come on many occasions, but the parking always threw me off. Today was not that day. They have a small lot at the back off the main road with free parking which is always a plus. This no frills diner greets you with a friendly face, easy order options and solid grindz. Prices are also so reasonable which blows my mind. I got an egg cheeseburger, which was good but the homemade patty could've used a little kick. My macaroni salad was a solid portion and also very simple and even better with a touch of salt. My friend got the pancakes which she loved and the breakfast sausages hit the spot. This is an old time restaurant and favorite that we used to go to with my parents and now with our children and grand children. They still haven't changed the quality of the food with old time favorites and good friendly service and family feeling. Me and my wife had the Teriyaki sandwich and the regular size Saimin combo which was delicious and the broth was tasty and the teriyaki beef was very tender and tasty. Our grand daughter had the regular Saimin and hamburger combo and she said it was very good and ate everything. Parking is unpaved and just dirt parking lot all the until you enter the outside seating area, it would be a little difficult if you had a walker or wheelchair because of the unevenness, but not impossible to try the food at this great old time restaurant. You can get a seat and scan the QR code and place your order and they will bring your order to the table or call out your name to give you your order. The waitress was very nice you can order water from her or buy bottle water and she also cleans the table once the customers leave. They have one restroom between the outside & inside dining room and it is one for men or woman. We used to pass this restaurant and they always had a long line outside. We did an order through yelp because we were anticipating it would be busy. When we got to the parking lot, it was pretty busy, there were people waiting outside. We decided to wait in the car in the parking lot. I kept looking at the notifications on yelp but it was more than 25 minutes, almost 30. My Husband decided to go in and check on the order and it was there, waiting. Ok, this is my initial visit to Forty Niner Restaurant...even though I am local born and raised. This establishment is considered a local landmark for food....so shame on me. Firstly, I don't have reason to visit the Pearlridge area unless I am going to Down to Earth, Pearl Kai Center, or Pearlridge Center. Secondly, whenthe building is painted yellow and there's red lettering of "Forty Niner" at the top - and I'm a Patriots fan - not enthusiastic about making a visit unless hangry. A friend and I shared the forty niner pancakes (banana mac nut pancakes smothered in haupia sauce ), he got the dirty hash loco moco (loco moco with corned beef hash, and their dirty sauce), and I got the forty niner breakfast burrito (fried rice, kalua pig, egg, grilled onion, sour cream). The burrito was good, and even better with tobasco sauce, which made me wish it came with pico de gallo or salsa or something... The burrito has a lot of comforting, albeit heavy flavors, and could use something bright and spicy to lift it up. It was still really good though. I had a bite of my friend's loco moco - so good with the dirty sauce. I have no idea what it is exactly, but it's creamy, tangy, and slightly spicy, and brings something bright to the dish. And my favorite: the forty niner pancakes! They were incredible: big, fluffy pancakes with the banana cooked inside so it gets all caramelized. The haupia sauce is so good - it's not too sweet, and the mac nuts on top bring a perfect crunch. Great combination of flavors and textures. The portions for all the dishes were very generous, with reasonable prices. The space itself has both indoor and outdoor seating (with shade). We sat outside, under a mango tree, and there were cute lights strung up over the tables. Forty Niner serves some of the locals' favorites. This rating reflects on what was ordered today, and not the entire menu. Decided to try the beef cutlet for the first time, assuming and expecting it to be like a typical chicken cutlet (breaded thin cut meat, fried, with gravy). The beef cutlet was a 3/10 to me... all it was is ground beef seasoned lightly with salt and maybe garlic powder? And smothered with gravy (whatever season was added, it still tasted bland). That's something I could cook at home easily, but of course with more flavor. For $14, this wasn't worth it and it shouldn't cost that much. I also ordered a side of garlic chicken, one of their more popular items. Flavor was good as always, but I believe I had the scraps (tiny pieces that were left). There were 3-4 decent size chicken pieces (half the size of a large peeled boiled egg) and the rest were small, which were of course hard or seemed overcooked. I went just before closing ( closed at 6pm) and tried their Forty Niner Special Bento because I wanted variety and to try garlic chicken and teriyaki beef. I have been coming to this restaurant every few years and it has changed alot. Lets just say everything seemed to improve since my last visit. Alot has changed...Now you order through a window from outside then choose a spot to sit..Then one of their staff will bring you your food. .There are outside patio seating (picnic table around 7 tables) and there is also inside (airconditioned old school padded booths) and even some other metal tables and chairs (maybe seating for around 32 people) inside. The staff are all pleasant and cool and there is even an inhouse bathroom (always a good thing) Menu (pic) is platelunch and burger fare. Portions are decent anf prices aint too bad. Parking is kind of chaotic here so definitely recommend having a little patience when getting into the parking lot if you drive. This restaurant gives me such classic Hawaii vibes. Came for the local style food and they definitely did not disappoint. Customer service was on point and food came out fast and hot. While, there's patio dining on the outside, I definitely recommend eating on the inside where there is very nice air conditioning since it gets super humid. Pro tip: Make sure you order through the front window on the outside of the property or order through the QR code, if you're gonna dine on the inside. I personally ordered outside since there's an additional surcharge using the QR code. read more
