Stopped in to try a sampling of their menu. Ordered a strawberry lilikoi malasada donut ($5), side of fried rice ($5), hot lava chicken musubi ($5), and side of kalbi beef ribs ($11). Malasada was delicious and they didn't skimp on the filling (Recommended). Fried rice was not bad, it was a very small portion with some edamame, spam, portugese sausage, and scallions sparsely mixed in. The side of kalbi beef ribs (1 slice) also had a few bites of white rice included underneath. While it tasted OK, the portion was smaller than expected. I did enjoy the hot lava chicken musubi - it had a vinegary spicy (like tabasco) kick to it. Other musubi choices include spam, portuguese sausage, and teriyaki chicken. What is interesting is that you can substitute the musubi rice with fried rice for $1 extra. If I were to return, I'd definitely get another malasada donut, musubi and maybe try their other dishes (like the kahlua pork, ube waffles, and/or loco moco breakfast). The venue is very cozy with about 4 tables inside and an outdoor/roofed side patio with seating for about 10-15 more. You order at the counter and they bring the order to your table if you're eating there. Note: Outside entrance has a couple steps, so the main seating and order counter is not really accesible for people in wheelchairs. There is a side/outdoor patio on level ground with seating that is more accessible. They're open until early afternoon for breakfast and lunch only. Delicious malasadas, some Ube, some Lilikoi. They were warm, perfectly cooked, honestly better than any I've had at Leonards or anywhere else. We had scrumptious ube waffles, super scrumptious. I've been wanting to try this place since it opened, so since my sister also wanted to try it out for her birthday, we decided to join in. It was great that we were able to make reservations because I wasn't sure if it was going to be packed. Since we came during the Art & Wine festival, there weren't too many people there. We got good seats outside by the music, which was a plus. Once we sat down, we didn't know the procedure, but saw a QR code so we ordered. We had two phones, so once we placed our order, the other party couldn't order anymore. They went inside to order instead. Each time we wanted more items, we had to place in a new order, which is a little inconvenient. Most restaurants have a QR system where you can order as you go and pay at the end. The staff seemed nice enough when we asked questions, but don't expect them to check in. You order, get your food, and that's it. Food We ordered -Syd's loco moco with kalua pork 4/5 pork was salty, but if you eat enough rice, it'll be ok The Mac salad is made with spaghetti noodles and was not the best -poke bowl 3/5 very large portion, but also the rice to fish ratio was a 70/30. I think since hubby left out most of the veggies, it was imbalanced. It was just ok. -mimosas 3/5 too much juice to bubbly ratio, but they had great flavors. The keikis seemed to like their sliders with fruit and ube waffles, so that was great. I really wanted to love this place, but there are still some kinks that they can work out, however, they are still new. I was visiting my family and decided to check this spot out for brunch with my sister. It was a really cute Hawaiian brunch spot. Small space but decent size outside for outdoor seating. I ordered the da kine plate with Portuguese sausage, scrambled eggs, potatoes, Hawaiian bread and rice. Huge portion and sausages were cooked to perfection. My sister ordered Kai's plate lunch - lava chicken. It came with pickled cucumbers and rice. The chicken was really smoky, I expected it to be on the saucy side but it was not. This was ok, not mind blowing. My hubby ordered the big kahuna loco moco and it came with three meats (beef patty, Portuguese sausage, and shredded pork), egg, fried rice, and macaroni salad. This was a huge plate and I would say is the best one! Super flavorful and saucy from the gravy! Highly recommend! I also ordered half a dozen of malasadas with filling and I was really disappointed. My husband made reservations for 12:00 pm on a Sunday, but when we went to the counter to check in, the (very nice) guy behind the counter said there were no available tables since it's first-come, first-served, unless we had a reservation. We explained that we did have one; he seemed a little hesitant and sheepish, but told us to basically just wait around until one opened up. We decided to make the best of it by checking out the menus ahead of time so we'd be ready to order once we were seated, but they actually prioritized finding us a table, which I appreciated. We were seated just a minute or so after we spoke with the guy at the counter. So I'm not sure if the reservation system is intended to work in the traditional sense, or if it's used more to prioritize guests for seating once tables open up. We ordered four malasadas (lilikoi, coconut, ube, and pineapple) and four entrees: Squirt's kalua pork loco moco (one plate, one burrito), Kai's plate lunch (one with kalbi short ribs, the other with kalua pork). We also got two drip coffees, a bottle of water, and a POG juice (passion fruit, orange, and guava). The drinks and malasadas came out fast, but there was enough of a wait for the food that my POG juice was watered down by the mostly-melted ice by the time the entrees came out. The malasadas were all great. They were significantly bigger than I was expecting and each filling was delicious, even the ube, which I typically don't care for. Mine was the lilikoi and was the best, in my opinion, with the coconut a close second. However, it feels a little lame to charge $1 extra for each filling, especially with so many different flavors on the menu (which is clearly meant to encourage diners to try filled over plain). I also thought it was odd that the waitress brought out a plate of four sizable malasadas and no plates to eat them on, and acted a little surprised when I asked if we could please have four plates. These are messy, with the cinnamon sugar coating and the fillings, but this is also waitressing 101: you serve someone food, even if it's just bread, you give them a little plate to eat over. When a different waitress eventually came out with the first entree, she said something unintelligible and just stood there staring at us in silence. We politely asked her to repeat what she said and she rapidly mumbled it again. I saw the plate had what appeared to be short ribs on it, so I asked my in-laws which of them ordered the plate with the short ribs and we figured out who it belonged to. It wasn't much better when she brought out the rest of the dishes. Also, no one comes by to check on guests after they bring out the food. If you have questions, you need to go inside and get help at the counter. Everyone really enjoyed their entrees. The macaroni salad here is unique, with the broken spaghetti instead of macaroni, and the kalua pork was very tender. The gravy was bordering on too salty but was still good, and the fried rice was excellent. But, like the malasada fillings, the fried rice was an extra $2 per plate. The live music on the patio where we were seated was very nice and the performer was a great guy. This is a mostly solid spot overall with mostly friendly service and fantastic food. But there are some service issues they need to work out here, and the additional charges for various things just feels like nickel-and-diming. The QR code ordering might be easier for the staff, but remains as impersonal as it is everywhere and is generally a red flag for "the staff is only going to drop off your food and never interact with you again unless you desperately try to flag them down as they avoid eye contact." There's much more I'd like to try here, but will return with slightly tempered expectations. read more

You order at the counter, they give you a number and bring the food to you. It's a cozy place with 4 tables inside and also outdoor dining. I ordered a coffee, hot water, the Kai's Plate Lunch which hubby ordered with kalbi shortribs, macaroni salad which had noodles instead of elbow macaroni, fried rice and teriyaki chicken. It speaks for itself. Chili bacon beans over rice. At this point my mind couldn't process what just happened. Mind blown. Ube waffles with a dollop of Ube sauce/cream. Yum! Can't stop bragging about their lilikoi mimosas and caramel-crusted moist pineapple upside down cake. Hawaiian shaved ice topped with ice cream is top-tier. So is their warm malasada filled with lilikoi and Ube. Their fillings both were tasty but not overwhelmingly too sweet. Add a cup of coffee from their espresso machine. Shaka Shack occupies the location that used to be Little House Cafe. For anyone wondering what happened to Donna, the owner of Little House, she opened Moxie's Steak House over on Park Street. But back to Shaka Shack. We came in for Sunday brunch. The interior is cute, Hawaiian-themed, with cheerful bright colors, and island reggae music. There is a TV on the wall split into four screens which is cool, but every single screen was playing sports. Sigh. The young lady who took our order at the counter was nice, and I appreciated her pointing out that they have a water station before I purchased bottled water. My partner ordered the Da Kine breakfast, and I went with the breakfast burrito. The burrito was kind of dry, and had rice in it, which I wasn't expecting, and would have definitely preferred it without, especially since there were also potatoes in it. Carbo overload. The burrito comes with a side of salsa, but I would prefer it with sour cream, or just put sour cream in the burrito, which would help with the dryness. Portion sizes were good though, you definitely won't leave hungry. Ambiance and service were good, food was decent. 3.5 stars overall. We may return. read more

This is a small establishment, with about 4 to 5 tables inside and 8 to 10 tables outside. the biggest table is a 5 top. You ordered at the counter pay for your food and they will bring to your table or there are QR codes on the outdoor tables and you can order thru that. The service was pretty fast, from the time we ordered we had all our food within 10 or less. I usually DO NOT like mimosas, but the Mai Tai Mimosa I had there was the best ever. I really wanted to like this place and will probably come back to try it again in the future. I got the short rib loco moco and unfortunately the rice was too mushy (too much water). The flavors were still good. Skip the strawberry malasada. I do want to try one of their other flavors to see if it's better. It seems the rice texture isn't consistent because my friend's was fine. The POG is made in house and pretty good, but nothing crazy. The staff was nice, and although it wasn't that busy it seems they may have some trouble keeping up with bussing tables. Cute little "shack" spot in the corner. They only have 13 tables. 5 inside and 7 outside in their patio. Make sure to find a table first then order inside. Entrance is on the sidewalk side. I accidentally almost entered through the back where the parking lot is lol. We shared the big kahuna loco moco which is perfect for two. I wanted to try alittle bit of each meat options they had and knew I wouldn't be able to finish it all. The hamburger patty and kalua pork was really tasty and good. In this quaint, unassuming colorful shack exists an underrated brunch! We were blown away by the quality of the food here. Our past experience with Hawaiian food in the U.S. has been mostly greasy "fast food" but this food did not feel greasy at all, but fresh and deliciously enhanced by rich sauces. The Tropi-Cobb salad was picked to "recover" from the holiday season, but was a surprise standout with tender, sauce-drenched chicken and LOTS of toppings including kimchi cucumber, avocado, mango, pineapple, bacon, and crumbled cheese. Seriously so good. The Hawaiian roll French toast was simple and not overly decadent, with lots of fresh fruit on the side. The rest of my party enjoyed their kalua pork and ube waffle. Literally a shack! The place is at the end of a secluded road, you probably wouldn't know it's there unless you're looking for it. There's a few tables inside and big tables outside. No table service, you order first then try to find a table. Because it's small, the line looks intimidating but it moves fairly quick. The orders make take awhile though. 1 star off because of their system, you can potentially be receiving your food and still haven't gotten a table. We were able to reserve a table in advance which was clutch. They also had a live band come and play which made you feel like you were somewhere else. Unfortunately, the band was right next to our table so it was hard to hear our conversations. The food was yummy! We loved the option to replace plain rice with fried rice with the entree. My family and I just at Shaka Shake in Alameda, CA for breakfast. The restaurant was a half a mile walk from our Airbnb house. Worth the walk. It was our first time we ate there. We all ordered different meals. My hubby and son had the kalua pork hash, my son's fiance had a poke bowl and I had the Mac nut waffle with a side of potatoes. Also my son had the iced ube coconut drink and his fiancée had the iced coffee with coconut drink. The only downside that Shaka Shack didn't have hot or cold tea drinks on their menu. Came here for a late lunch yesterday afternoon around 1:30pm ish. My order: side of mac salad, spicy poke bowl, and an iced ube latte. Total cost for me was about $40 after tax and tip. I definitely didn't NEED to order the mac salad because the poke bowl was already pretty filling, but it was my first time here so I wanted to try a variety of things. Got a booth seat inside. Simple walk-up ordering where they give you a table number, and you go find your own seating, no reservations. Pros: - pretty good portions - the poke bowl was large and filling, and the fish was very fresh. - ube latte was delicious!!! unique and I would definitely come back for it, even if it's on the "pricier" side. - Authentic Hawaiian taste - Really cute casual vibe - very kind service - Live music performance outside! - Wide variety of menu items but not so many choices that it's overwhelming. Cons: - parking can be difficult if it's a really busy time, the parking lot is small and the street it's on has a lot of traffic, so it can be tough to get in. - Food took maybe like a little longer to come out than I would have liked, but it tasted so delicious that I didn't mind. You order at the counter and they give you a number and bring you your food. Ahhh the staff I talked to were very friendly and helpful when narrowing down what I wanted. I order a loco moco which you can find on many menus in the area, but this may be one of the best I've had in recent memory. They actually seasoned the meat! I find a lot of places rely too heavily on their gravy for loco mocos which always ends up with an underwhelming experience but Shaka Shack had me wishing I could have eaten more of their generous portions despite being full. With its colorful teal blue exterior with purple and orange trim accents, this place had a fun, playful feel. This place was cozy and small on the inside and the bright yellow interior lent to a cheery bright atmosphere. The ordering is simple.. Walk up to the cashier, pick your items, and get called when your food is ready. I knew right when I looked at the menu that I would be having the "Syd's Loco Moco" and the dish did not disappoint. The rice was nice and sticky-- just how i like it. The egg yolk was runny, and the ground beef with loco moco sauce reminded me of why I love this so much. The only reason I'm taking a star off is I wasn't the biggest fan of the their version of Mac salad. The long pasta noodles (similar to spaghetti) made me wish they used the classic elbow macaroni instead. It also wasn't as tasty as other Hawaiian spots I've been to. We've been slowly eating our way across the island and finally got to try Shaka Shack last month! I pretty much drive by it on the way to work every day, and it's in the cutest little house right before you cross the park st bridge. This place gives ultimate Hawaiian vibes. We sat in the outdoor patio on the side, and there was a guy playing music in the back. Nice chill brunch spot on the island. And there's a little free library in the front! We got 3 malasadas - mango, passion fruit, and ube. All of them were so good, def a standout and much better than I expected. Much less sweet than I expected, which is a plus for me since donuts are normally too sweet for me. The filling of the passion fruit one was nice and tart. We originally ordered both types of loco moco - the regular and the kalua pork. Unfortunately, they messed up our orders, so we got two regulars and didn't want to go through the hassle of having them remake it. The regulars were pretty good. Nice flavor and the eggs were perfectly runny. I added spicy sausage to mine and it was a great addition. I also liked that the Mac salad was made with noodles. The portions were also huge! We could not finish either of our plates and had enough loco moco for another lunch the next day. I'd go back to try the kalua pork one next time. My fiancé and I stopped by this morning because we were craving loco mocos. We ordered syd's loco mocos, malasadas (mac nut & ube) and the ube matcha latte. Everything came out pretty quick. The loco mocos were hella good- rice wasn't mushy, eggs/patty cooked perfectly, amount of gravy wasn't overwhelming and was the perfect portion size. The malasadas were good as well. It came out hot af, wasn't overly coated in sugar and the filling wasn't hella sweet. It definitely reminded us of Leonard's. Last but not least, my favorite: the ube matcha latte. It was sweet, creamy and you can taste the ube. Absolutely delicious and we will be back!! read more

I love the ambiance because Shaka Shack can easily fit in if you moved the restaurant to Hawaii. It has all the nice interior design touches without going overboard. You place your order at the counter, given a number and the food is delivered to your table. I tried a lunch plate with Kalbi short ribs on a bed of fried rice with cucumber kimchi. The ribs were cut thin and the texture reminded me of more like it was pipikaula, a Hawaiian cuisine dish of salted and dried beef similar to beef jerky. I'd say the best item on the plate was the fried rice. It looks like there is one cook that's working very hard. If the food takes a while, please share some patience. read more

While I thoroughly enjoyed the warmth the Hawaiian dishes brought me, the only downside was having to wait ~50min from order to the arrival of our food. Food: 4/5 I had the loco moco kalua pork hash, which had your very classic flavors of both kalua pork hash and a loco moco. So, if you can't decide between one or the other, this was a good mix of both. I will say that the pieces that didn't have gravy was a bit dry, but other than that it was a solid eat. My friend got the kalua pork plate with fried rice. The flavors were very classic, it just felt much smaller than the portion I had with my kalua pork hash. We did split the ube waffles, which had a fluffy mochi texture with a perfect amount of ube flavor. It was a bit too sweet for me, but my friend really liked the level of sweetness. My friend also ordered a breakfast burrito to go, but due to the lack of communication between the staff members, we were not notified that the burrito was ready. And we waited again longer than we expected. The burrito sounded good, but my friend's boyfriend said it would have been better without the rice. Staff/Space: 3/5 Despite the staff being really nice, the waiting for our food and take out order was just a bit too much. I would be a little more understanding if it was super super crowded, but all of the tables around us already had their food and we didn't see many orders go outside before getting ours. Overview: Lack of flavor, not worth the price, Hawaiian-ish vibes, I won't be back ---- I really wanted to like this place because it went a little viral on Instagram and I saw so many good reviews, but unfortunately our experience fell short. The overall theme was lack of flavor. They do have salt, pepper, and ketchup on the tables (+ a couple other sauces inside) to adjust it to your liking but the food itself had little depth of flavor or seasoning. ---- Ube Mochi Waffles $16 - Reminiscent of the waffles I've made from the Trader Joe's mix - The Ube syrup was drizzled on the waffle and I know Ube is a subtle flavor, but there wasn't really much of any flavor other than sweetness - Fruits included were strawberry, mango, and pineapple - Comes with prepackaged syrup container Syd's Loco Moco ($22 with Portuguese Sausage, $18 without) - Came with burger patty, rice, 2 eggs, some green onion on top, gravy, Mac salad, and a bit of cabbage on the side - We added Portuguese sausage for $4 - Sadly the gravy tasted like a slightly thicker packet gravy - The Mac salad was interesting with the use of spaghetti noodles instead of elbow pasta, but no flavor at all - The cabbage was plain vegetables, no sort of dressing Malasadas ($3 each / $15 half dozen / $30 dozen) - They are made fresh to order (10+ minute wait after ordering) - We got a $15 half dozen of the plain ones, fillings are $1 extra per each - Fillings: ube, coconut, mango, or lilikoi (passion fruit) - Although they were made fresh to order, they were a bit dense and disappointing - They definitely would've tasted better with filling Latte ($6) - Nothing special - Regular coffee here - No sugar added, they have sugar packets on the table ---- Notes: - Service was okay, it's not the type of restaurant where they have servers checking on you - You order inside first then choose a table to sit down at - Took around 15 minutes to get our food from the time of ordering - Seating inside and outside - Outside can get a bit hot, and too sunny depending on where your seat is - Mesh material for the shade, doesn't offer much protection from the sun - Inside seating is a bit cramped - Self-service water located inside, left of the cashier - Parking spots in the back - 1 bathroom available ---- Overall: We should've saved $38 and used it to buy ingredients to make the Ube Mochi Waffles and Loco Moco ourselves, but at least we didn't have to cook it or clean up. So happy to have Hawaiian fare as an option for Sunday brunch! The Kalua Pork Loco Moco hit all the comfort food notes I was craving, with super tender pork and yummy gravy. The side potato-pasta salad was a tad soft and not as hearty as traditional macaroni, but tasted ok. I was able to just finish my plate so the portion was big and satisfying but didn't cause me to overeat. The malasadas were very good while warm, but I still prefer a mochisada any day (hint, hint someday maybe?). There's not a lot of seating but we managed to squeeze 3 of us around a table for two out on the patio - nice day with some live music from a talented man with his guitar playing classic pop songs from the 70s-80s-90s. So I go on solo dates with myself and I went to the Oakland Museum first and then brunch here. It was a perfect day. I got here on a Sunday around 2:00 pm. It was still busy and I waited in line for about 10 minutes. You order your food at the counter and then pray to find a table. If you go with a partner or friend, one of you needs to snag an empty table if you see one. I got lucky with the table right in front of the kitchen. But because they close at 3, less people began to arrive and I was able to move to another table. There is more seating outside than inside. And there was a guitarist outside which was nice. I had the kalbi rib plate and a side of the cucumbers. It was so good. And the servings are big so I got to take leftovers home. I also enjoyed a POG mimosa which sent me back to Hawaii. The vibe is here is really cool. The food was fantastic. It just works. But you need to be patient when it's busy. Just sit back and relax. The street has a lot of traffic and parking is a little tricky so be prepared for that on the weekends especially. read more

I like this place as seen in my previous review but didn't have a great experience this time. I ordered the kalua pork hash. It wasn't what I expected. It was more like loco moco to me. The pork was in a patty form and that and the egg were smothered in gravy. There was no mention of the gravy in the description so I didn't know I was getting that. The Mac salad is made with spaghetti noodles it looked like. I didn't really like it at all. The drink was extremely sweet as well. read more
