Two big burgers for around $13 is a rare find in NYC! Everytime there's a promo you have to order through the kiosk or the app to get the deal. I used the kiosk which was super easy, and honestly, if you're not interested in downloading the app (especially since you don't earn loyalty points or rewards), it's the way to go. The service was a bit slow, but it was during the lunch rush, so it's hard to say if that's typical or just the timing of everything. read more

Lines have improved, the speed and service is about the same before as they make the burgers fresh and the fries were better this time. Never have I ever seen such a badly assembled burger! It's almost comedic! More than half of my patty is hanging out of my burger and the cheese had solidified, preventing me from rearranging it. What is shown in the picture was thrown into a brown paper bag, and I could see the oil seeping through the bottom of it because the burger was resting at the bottom. The white paper holding the burger didn't do anything to prevent my hands from getting oily as well. My friend's burger was also similarly lopsided too. Very busy Shake Shack on the dining concourse level at Grand Central. The way to order here is by app or at their tablets, and even though it gets crowded, it doesn't take that long for most orders to be ready (only 5 minutes on our last visit). The hot dogs, fries, and chicken bites we got were about the same as every other Shake Shack, maybe just a little greasier than usual. There is limited seating in the Shake Shack area, but there are standing tables elsewhere on the concourse. This review is overdue, given I have eaten here on the fly several times. It's a busy location with a high volume of traffic. It may be the busiest of the places in the food court in the basement of Grand Central. I always order the smoke shack bacon double cheeseburger, which is a pretty good burger. When Shake Shack burst upon the scene, the product was clearly well priced and still is, with good quality meat. Since then, Shake Shack has weathered the rather intense burger competitive landscape in NYC fairly well. However, Shake Shack needs to improve their French fry game. I am referring to the regular fries, which could greatly enhance the overall experience. This is where many competitors are besting Shake Shack by a wide margin. The current fries at Shake Shack have no golden crust on the exterior, just a bland somewhat mushy texture and limited flavor. The competitors have mastered a golden crust with a fluffy interior whose contrast makes the fries so good. So please take this into consideration. I know you can do it. One very important note on this location: the man working the limited seating area deserves the positive attention of corporate. He is working hard and going the distance for your customers. He is clearing and cleaning the tables with all that customer traffic. He is making way to seat your customers looking for the limited seating. He is helping parents with their children in the tight spaces. He is making a way for your customers when there does not seem seating for them. He is the unsung hero at this busy location. It's a shake shack, and it's inarguably the best food in grand central so I always pay it a visit when I'm traveling between New York and Connecticut. As with every shake shack, I think it's ridiculously overpriced: a double burger and fries will run you $15 after tax, which imo is absurd for glorified fast food. The other thing it's not? Fast. The number of times I've been sent into a panic at this shake shack staring at the clock needing to run to a train is insane. With that said, the employees do their best, it's just a lot of volume. The food is no better and no worse than any other shake shack, but across the board I find them to be underwhelming. The fries are meh, the burgers are good but there are certainly better smash burgers in nyc, and I recently just tried the chicken nuggets which I thought were very average. Never been to a Shake Shack, and tbh, I don't remember ever hearing of it! (Yes, I live under a rock.) But, while doing research for a trip to NYC, it came to my attention, and after one of my friends who has visited NYC a few times said he goes for a burger every visit, I made sure to stop in before leaving town. Hence, while at GCT, I stopped in at this location to get my Shake Shack experience. I must say, I'm glad I did! Located in the food court of GCT, it's an open dining area. There is a small sign pointing the way to 'order' (not where the cashier is) and a menu is on the wall. NYC dealing with Covid appears to have made a lot of changes to this dining operation, so lets start with that. First, we had to show our vaccination cards before they would even let us order. She told us to 'keep the cards out', but not why. She then asked if we were paying with cash or card. When we replied card she told us to use the touch screen to place our order. (Cash would order with the cashier.) There are three monitors set up along a counter and they are fairly easy to use. Just scroll through, select the items you want, then hit the 'cart' icon top right to pay. You are asked for your cell phone number before check out and a text message is sent to you when your order is ready. I didn't see any hand sanitizer, but that may be because I carry my own, which we used after placing our order. We then went to sit down in the dining area while waiting for the text, and a different employee asked us for our vaccination card. This is why she told us to 'keep the cards out'. Now you know too. Once he had reviewed our cards, he put a little table tent on our table to show we were 'OK'd' to sit in the dining area. Customers had gathered around the counter (near the cashier) waiting for their orders to be done. Although not as fast as some fast food restaurants, it didn't take too long for the order to be ready. We were told by staff before ordering that our order would be packed 'to-go', but we are welcome to sit in the dining area if we are vaccinated. The burger has a nice grilled flavor and I enjoyed it. The lettuce was crisp and the tomato fresh. The cheese looks like one of those individually wrapped yellow cheese food slices. I'm not sure what the sauce is, but it's mild. Maybe a mayo/ketchup combo? Really unsure. If you're not sure you'd like that, you can make a note when ordering to remove that, and just get some packets available where you pick up your food. The fries are crinkle cut fries and they are cooked crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Sadly, we did not try one of the shakes. Maybe we'll have another opportunity to stop by a Shake Shack to try one. If you like burger joints, and have tried several of the other national brands, you will probably enjoy this burger too. Not like the one with the 'Scottish name', more like the one that you 'pop into and then leave'. In any event, it was a good burger. One final note, as this is a food court, there are public restrooms at either end of the hall for all the businesses. Only in this photo the burger is from shake shack. The burger was $12 for a double patty korean bulgogi burger. It was good but needed a little more flavor. No ordering at the register, only through the tablets which I don't like because it is eliminating jobs. It is very crowded and hard to find a seat since it is the grand central eating area and not the usual shake shack set up. Took 20 minutes to get a burger which is crazy, but it is a busy location so I am understanding of that. Sometimes I get the Shakes, and I need fast food in a hurry. Yet even in those moments, I won't stoop to Shake Shack. I literally only go to a Shake Shack when someone drags me to one, and it's disappointing how often people do. Shake Shack might be my least favorite chain along with Subway. I'm just so not a fan of the icky tasteless burgers - so bland and awful and extremely overpriced, about three times the price of McDonald's, while tasting a lot worse. We shared one of their "black and white" shakes that I've had before (meh). The milkshakes are the most disappointing thing because I'm a big fan of milkshakes, and this place is named after milkshakes, and yet they're really terrible. I've noticed that unlike other chains, some of which I give bad reviews to sometimes, my Shake Shack reviews are often deleted by Yelp for "not being detailed enough", despite the fact that there are dozens of reviews that are less than a quarter as long, and much less detailed. The difference? Mine are usually bad reviews (if it's Shake Shack) and mine are read by a lot of people. So it's hard not to think Shake Shack is doing something to have their bad reviews illegitimately removed. It keeps happening and it mostly only happens when I review a Shake Shack. So bittersweet because when you need a bite in a pinch this is one of the better stalls for when you catch your train ride home but i think it's just so damn chaotic and busy the quality is much worse than any other place. Ripped in part bottom buns, soggy top buns, excessively greasy everything (including bag) - not good extra greasy, there's a difference.....and just botched execution- burgers falling apart, toppings thrown on wildly kind of mediocre. While the food was great, it's really hard to enjoy the full experience at this location. There is extremely limited seating available. The face-to-face ordering was extremely slow. Note: If you plan to "dine in" (aka use their seating), you must order with the human. We got sick and tired of waiting so we ordered "to go" at the kiosks. The kiosk ordering was relatively easy and user friendly. We did not have to wait too long for the food pick up, but there's not much space to wait and it gets very crowded. Astoundingly, there were at least 5 app orders that sat there for the entire 20 minutes it took us to order and wait for our food. There were no other seating areas available and we were forced to go to an adjacent park-like area outdoors and eat our food out there. An alternative could have been Bryant Park, which would have been a bad choice since it's chock-full of winter village happenings. So, in summary, food was hot, fresh and yummy, but the overall dining experience was poor and unpleasant. read more

I'm glad we tried it. The place was extremely busy. The organizational plan was decently efficient. Our food order came out correctly within a reasonable amount of time. The burgers were pretty good. I love Shake Shack. I'm not going to get into how much better it is than just about every other fast food burger that you'd erroneously put in the same category, but just know that I love it. Unfortunately, this location just doesn't seem to operate with the same efficiency as the others for whatever reason. I would appreciate the irony that everything takes longer at the one location where I usually need to be catching a train...but it's actually annoying as hell. Crispy outer edges. Soft on the inside. Good just by themselves. Chick'n Bites: more like chicken balls based on the shape. Cooked within an inch of their lives. Only good thing about these was the accompanying bbq sauce. Definitely not a worthwhile product. The burger: The bun is great. The patty is smashed down on the griddle and the edges have a nice char. Burger was greasy though. Spread is good. The leaf lettuce was maybe too much. Cheese was fine. Here's the In&Out blow by blow. Shake Shack fries are definitely better. Shack Shack burger bun vs In&Out bun: edge goes to In&Out. The meat, cheese, spread and toppings? All In&Out. I totally see the appeal of Shake Shack. It is a different style of burger than In&Out and the burger has its merits. The fries were good. The chicken was bullshit. Shake Shack should focus on their key items. So why three stars? Elizabeth and I took a trip into New York City during my business trip. It was delightful. On our way back to the train, we were starving, and Shake Shack happened to be the only restaurant open in Grand Central Station. I saw the limited edition Hot Ones menu items, and I was immediately intrigued. I ordered the Hot Ones Spicy Chicken Sandwich along with a ShackBurger. The ShackBurger is a reliable burger, but the Hot Ones Sandwich carried this meal. I thoroughly enjoyed the crunchy, juicy chicken drenched in hot sauce. Spicy food is my love language. I would have hot sauce on every dish if it were up to me. This wraps up my dining experience in the magical land of New York City.
