Silo is one of those places I feel like I shouldn't like, because I frequent it so often (because of work location), but it's actually a great spot. When it comes time to decide "where should we go for lunch?" (you know the feeling, having just exited the entrance of your office building and you have to pick a direction) -- my coworkers and I somehow find ourselves heading to Silo 2-3 times a week. They really do have it all -- open food bar, sushi, sandwiches, salad bar, and the place is clean, spacious and the checkout line moves quickly. The food bar is fresh and the items change daily. My faves include: baked salmon, rotisserie chicken, flank steak, mac & cheese, grilled brussel sprouts and cauliflower, avocado salad, mango cilantro grilled chicken, broccoli angel hair pasta and quinoa salad. Get there at 11:30a and everything's untouched! Get there after 1p and the food bar has served its duty well. The sushi (packaged or made to order) is delicious as well. Lots of seating. Silo Cafe is one of the many shiny, new restaurants/cafes/stores located in Crystal Pavillon's "secret food court." Definitely worth coming to - they have a pianist, indoor waterfall, and tons of seating, unlike many other public spaces. Maybe it's because people don't know about it, but come since you know now! I tried Silo's Udon noodles and they were wonderful! I got the vegetarian option ($6.75) and it had yellow pickled radish, seaweed, fried tofu, regular tofu, mushrooms, broccoli, bean sprouts, and a delicious, sweet broth! It was really good - I didn't think that they skimped, actually half of the bowl was noodle and the other half was the toppings. I come here almost everyday during the work week for lunch so I figured it was about time I write a review! First of all, the beverage and snack options are plentiful. I've learned about many new San Pellegrino flavors because of Silo. Secondly, the make your own salad bar has fabulous topping options. I recommend the tomato basil salad dressing. In addition, the hot bar is always One recommendation I have is that they should have strips of grilled chicken at the hot bar. Sometimes I pick it out of the chicken caesar salad that they have there when really they should just have plain grilled chicken. I've also been for breakfast where they primarily make omelettes and breakfast sandwiches. I don't recall if they have the hot bar open during breakfast, but I don't believe so. By far the best thing about silo is their prices! Very affordable and delicious at the same time. But you do have to spend over $7.00 to use a credit card. read more

The service, oh my lord! I get that this is New York, but still, it is a new level of rude! I also asked if I could use their bathroom for which you need a key. I was asked to leave something behind as a collateral that I would get back with the key. That in itself is not a problem as I understand that people tend to be forgetful etc, but the attitude with which I was presented with the key despite being a paying customer was just shockingly hilarious. This was not New York rude, this was just a whole level of "I don't have a legit reason not to give you the key to use our facilities, but I am going to make it very obvious that I hate having to give you this key!" rudeness. This place is awesome! I love that I work in this building and they have Silo's downstairs which has a variety of everything! In the morning, the breakfast is so good. I used to get the egg and ham omelette on a roll. The roll was so fresh and fluffy. For lunch there's so many options! Burgers, wraps, Panini, create your own pasta, pay per pound hot foods, sushi, udon/soba, etc. I usually go for the shrimp tempura udon or the chicken donburiya (chicken cutlet egg bowl over rice). They also have a sitting area of like 20 tables which makes it very convenient to just buy your food and dine there too. The staff there are always very friendly and makes jokes and asks you how you're doing. They all work really hard and it shows. read more

The best buffet place I've experienced in Midtown East. I think what really makes this place excel is its cleanliness as lauded by its Department of Health A rating and its smörgåsbord of options. I would recommend skipping the salad/buffet bar and, instead, try the different international food stations. They have a Japanese/Korean station, Italian/Pasta station, American deli station and Salad station. The two I always go to are the Asian station and Pasta station. The Asian station has bibimbap, which is Korean rice topped with marinated beef, veggies and optional hot sauce, which is a must add. Its a great dish that makes you feel like you ate a light lunch, even though the portion is huge. I also like to grab some udon, which is thick japanese noodles in broth. It's also embellished with meat and veggies. Both these dishes come in the $8-$10 price range. The Pasta station continues Silo's focus on large portions and clutch for those carb-craving days. For about $8, you could get a pasta dish (extra for whole wheat) with three veggies (my goto: grilled eggplant, broccoli, mushrooms) and grilled chicken (which was an extra $1.50). A round plastic container is filled to the brim with pasta. The station is a pick and choose with your ingredients cooked on the spot, assuring maximum freshness. Overall, the place is great. They serve breakfast too, although not my favorite place for it. Also, don't come here for the soups, they practically don't have a selection. read more

Fantastic Bibimbap! The beef bibimbap here is soooooooooooo good. Perfectly marinated beef. Tons of crunchy veggies Yummy, white rice that doesn't taste like it's been sitting out. This place is in the buildings atrium. If I looked for it from the outside I would never have found it. Food is decent. People are not. I use to be a regular and stuck by the restaurant even though they were closed down for a day for health reasons! The foods I normally order are from their Udon station, salads and the buffet. Udon station is the worst. I'm Asian... Noodles, bean sprouts, fried tofu (cut up into invisible pieces, mushroom, seaweed, scallion, carrots, broccoli are very very very inexpensive items. You can added breaded chicken, grilled chicken or teriyaki beef. I usually order the veggie udon. Typically, you walk up the station and pick out the ingredients you want. You would get half a bowl of noodle, 3 pieces of bean sprout, barely a pinch of the fried tofu, invisible mushroom, 5 pieces of seaweed.... C'mon! 3 pieces of bean sprout?!?! When we asked the guy behind the station for more, attitudes galore!! Today, they charged us a quarter more... for extra 3 bean sprouts! I go to silo almost every day! No more.... I'm done with the attitude. Food isn't all that great! its good if you're starving and had nothing else to eat and it's raining outside. This place might be the prototype of such a place fulfilling it's place in the "lunch time ecosystem", containing all the typical Midtown lunch foods, be it a sandwich, salad, or hot buffet. The biggest distinguishing factor is that it is located in the basement of a large office building, providing a convenient source of food for people inside the building looking to avoid any inclement weather. This place takes everything you like about a beloved deli and sterilizes it to create this soulless, all in one station for all sorts of lunch food you can think of, prepared only to serve the working lunch crowd. While it lacks any distinguishing factors beyond it being in the basement level of a large office building, it gives people a wide array of choices. A fairly complete salad bar, grill station, sandwich station, and better than average hot buffet let's people choose from a wide variety of uninspiring but not bad choices for lunch. The food itself is nothing to call home about, or even suggest. Their buffet is a solid choice, containing a wide variety of foods for the discerning types, focused on customary American cuisines (mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese, chicken) or American derivative cuisines (Sesame Chicken/fried rice anyone?). Perhaps the best part is that it has seafood such as salmon, cod, and shrimp. While nothing too special, it is definitely a step above the rest of the carb heavy, dry, or low quality meats. They still maintain some of their fundamental deliciousness, but their inoffensive seasoning and cooking doesn't bring out the full flavor that could be taken from their seafood. Prices are affordable, not going over $10 for most things, and the buffet going for $8.50 a pound, making it quite an affordable Midtown food choice. My favorite deal is after 2:30, the buffet is half off, which at $4.25 a pound is great. Variety becomes sparse although quality remains about the same. If you're looking for an affordable place for lunch, this place is an adequate establishment, covering all the normal food that the Midtown lunch crowd wants. But unless you work in the building or are within a one to two block radius, there really is no point in coming here, when there are dozens of near equivalent places to go to. read more

Pleasantly surprised by this place when I was working in the city office for a day and my coworkers told me this was one of their usual lunch joints. Went with a bunch of cold salads - cucumber/tomato/dill, roasted summer squash/zucchini, shrimp/onions/peppers, and a barley(?)/craisin/herb one. Silo is my go-to place when I'm having one of those "the-diet-starts-today" kind of moments. Why? Because of the numerous healthy options. While half of the Silo salad bar has simmery savory meat delights (feels like I'm eating a delectable Chinese food dish), the other half - the "cold" side - has fresh veggie dishes that are creatively modified on a day-to-day basis. I especially love Silo's beet and carrot salad, along with its incredibly perfect cucumber salad. Its brussel sprouts are also delicious. Silo also has an incredible sushi/Japanese station as well as TONS of other lunch options (I recently had a turkey wrap from the Silo sandwich area-- little did I know that the turkey was going to be AMAZING Thanksgiving Day-esq turkey! This is one of my favorite spots for take out lunch in Midtown East. There are so many options, and everything I've tried is fresh and delicious. The downside is that it's expensive for take out ($8-$12), but that can be expected anywhere in Midtown. The subs are delicious, but my favorite is the salad bar. Everything is fresh and there are excellent options, from walnuts to crumbled blue cheese and everything in between. Silo, Silo, Silo... what is there to say about Silo? First of all this place is too white and clean for my liking, it's just... sterile. I'd imagine the cafeteria in The Island to resemble Silo on some level. (Especially the one on 31st st., now THAT is sterile) Everything here is average. You already know what to expect. Sandwiches? Average. Sushi? Average. Hot food? Average. (Don't eat the chicken it's never tender) Salads? Average. I mainly come here to order breakfast since there are way better options for lunch than anything of mediocrity served here. With the death of Teresa's and Azure last year, Silo has reaped the benefits as the "high class" breakfast deli in the area. Let me explain my breakfast routine. I usually get a variation/combination of the following: 2 eggs sunny side up, sausage patty, hash browns or toast. Really, that's all I ever eat. Once in a blue moon I might ask for scrambled eggs, or bacon, or an omelette if I'm really bored. But in general, my order is eggs sunny, sausage patty and hash browns/toast. I am disappointed to write this review and furthermore to say this : but the guys here at Silo screw it up 9 times out of 10. Today the foreman forgot to put in my order with the cook for about 5 minutes while I stood there and watched. When I reminded him again, then the eggs fired up. A few minutes later, I get a box with 2 eggs sunnyside up (poorly done, yolk still runny and bottom of the eggs are fried to a crisp) with nothing else inside. I reminded him I wanted sausage as well and he threw it into the platter, a patty that was meant for someone else's order. At that point I had been standing in line for 10 minutes, there's at least a half dozen people around me gesturing/fidgeting for their orders and I feel it's pretty much pointless to point out that I wanted toast also. i work in this area and went to check out silo cafe and i will say its a decent spot. there is a wide range of food that they have to offer which is awesome. the cooks behind the counter are very nice.. they always start up a nice conversation with whoever is ordering. only negative i see here is the prices. I usually get breakfast sandwiches here and good, I wish they had onion rolls, if they do I haven't noticed. The guys behind the counter are pretty quick in the morning and they are nice and polite. I've gotten some burgers and hot sandwiches a few times and they were good too but not outstanding. The hot salad bar has some good stuff, the mac and cheese (super oozy cheesy) and the chicken cutlets are my favorite. I generally try and stay away from hot salad bars because they kinda freak me out. The cold salad bar looks good but I haven't tried it yet. They do have a large selection of hot and cold stuff and it all does look fresher than a typical deli hot salad bar. The place is large and very clean. There is a seating area also. Another typical NY cafe with an identity crisis. This place, located in the basement of the Meredith building, serves everything from burritos to sushi to udon noodles. It is just another NY lunch hub for busy corporates like myself who need a quick lunch to-go. My favorite part about this place is their make your own salad bar. They have a great variety at the salad bar including tofu and pasta salad. The food is a bit pricey (the salad usually comes out to about $10) but that's just New York for you. This place also has really healthy snack options like kale chocolate chip cookies and pop chips. I like coming here to grab a snack when I'm hungry but not ravenous. This place is a very solid location to grab a quick bite in midtown -- the menu is quite extensive (covering sushi, cold salad bar, hot salad bar, grill, pasta bar, sandwhiches, burritos and more) and the price is right in line with the neighborhood. A couple of the hot subs are exceptional (there's a pastrami sandwhich which is quite delicious and a texas BBQ roast beef which is to die for) but my usual meal of choice is the pasta bar -- the servings are generous and the price OK (the one I grabbed today was $8). The hot salad bar also offers some tasty delights -- the meatloaf is quite good, as was an asian style spicy chicken breast I stumbled upon the other day. It can get quite crowded during the week and if you show up too late the food seleciton might be a little scare (I strolled in at 2:15 today and was dismayed to see the wheat pasta was all gone) but all in all it's a worthwhile place to grab a bite of lunch during the work week read more

Do not come here for salad. The people in the salad line are miserable and incompetent, I have come twice in the past two weeks and have been overcharged. The first time by a whopping 2.75!!! i freelance for one of the companies in the building, so i often pop into silo cafe for some grub. my fave by far are the breakfast sandwiches - sausage egg and cheese on a toasted english muffin (with a lil' ketchup) is the ultimate. the guys that make the sandwiches are super nice and crack jokes while you wait. lunch at silo gets a little hectic, so get there early or else you run the risk of missing out on the daily treats featured in the hot/salad bar. if you like custom made salads - beware of the salad sergeant. he barely cracks a smile and i swear he gets annoyed if your salad choices are not to his liking. being who i am, i had to get to the bottom of his gruff exterior and forced him to be my friend (i talked to him in spanish)...now we get along famously -but he still frowns when i ask for an extra squirt of salad dressing. ps. don't get the sushi. just don't. read more

This place has alright food but not great. Treehaus across the street is much better (but costs more). Also silo doesn't care to remember or do anything extra for their regular customers. I find myself repeating the same order several times each time that I am here as the disinterested staff don't care to remember and tipping doesn't help. It's really hit or miss and they always give exact change in really small change, which i find to be annoying, especially since the have a credit card minimum and try to rush u off the line. I work in the neighborhood and have to order from Silo every day as my manager prefers their food. While I find the food decent enough, I have an intimate knowledge of their poor customer service and unreliable pricing system. I've ordered the same sandwich over the phone and in the store and have been charge two totally different prices. Connie, one of the woman who takes delivery orders is incredibly rude and seems to always be frazzled and not in control of the delivery orders. They never know the soup-of-the-day (and I ask them every day), and they have an incredibly rude habit of asking one to hold, setting the phone down, and complaining about the caller in Spanish to their co-workers as a means by which to blow off steam. Yes, I understand Spanish, yes, I can hear you complaining about me asking what the soup of the day is. The inconsistencies in pricing and wavering grade (at one point a C!) makes me unlikely to recommend them to anyone. read more
