This is the ONLY place in the world where you can get REAL chocolate wine! I discovered this tiny, quaint, one man run winery a few years ago while on the Trolley tour in Astoria. The guide mentioned we should check it out so we stumbled in, kids and all. I immediately fell inlove with the place and the owner! After a quick tour, he led us through the tasting with so much knowledge and heart behind every story told of the wines. It was a one in a lifetime experience.I took home a Lemon Merenge wine, Peach wine, Cranberry wine and of course the Chocolate wine! I've been wanting to go back ever since! I told everyone; sisters, friends about this place and how if they ever go to Astoria they MUST go see the Shallon Winery! It's the only place in the WORLD where you can get wine like that and once the owner passes, the secrets and recipes will go with him. So they'd better hurry! When we booked our trip to Astoria this year I was SO nervous he wouldn't be there any longer and the winery shut down. You can imagine my relief to see that he was still there, alive and well! I was so happy to see him! I just wished we lived closer so we could visit more often. Talking with him and sharing stories is a priceless experience! I left buying wine for myself and a friend who begged me to buy her a bottle of the infamous Chocolate Wine! :)

I call him Passionate Paul. He is the the lone wolf of the fruit, whey and chocolate wines and he makes it all himself within his small lab! First, he will take you on a swift tour of his setup, discuss the history of the wine and of the wondrous building itself. Second, he will literally show you through the room window, his 6x6, one-man lab then it is on to the wine tasting. You will sample approximately four or five different wines. I would say the most unique taste would be his chocolate orange wine that he pours into a small cake cone; upon first taste you will get a hint of chocolate liquor then when you bite into the cone, a blast of orange and more alcohol stings you. That taste reminded me of my childhood years when my mom would bring home that infamous yellow Whitman's sample assorted chocolate box. The dark chocolate orange creme chew comes to mind. Nice stop going into Oregon...

We had an excellent time with Paul at his winery. Very educational, and we loved his sense of humor. Definitely a must do in Astoria!

Shade can be hard to find, but the staff told me to feel free to grab an Adirondack chair and position it wherever I wanted to, which was appreciated. The staff is extremely friendly, enthusiastic, and helpful. While it may seem weird for a non-alcohol drinker to visit a winery, I've been told at other wineries that it's quite common, and other wineries offer a fair selection of non-alcoholic beverages for such patrons. Bateaux only offers water, so anybody hoping for kombucha, iced tea, sodas, etc. is out of luck. Their food menu consists of two pizzas: Margherita, and pepperoni. They're wood-fired, and the dough is made in-house. The pizzas are competent, but they're on the pricy side, and are nothing noteworthy. Service is fast, and there is table service, even if you're just sitting in an Adirondack chair that you randomly positioned in a spot of shade close to the stage. Be aware that Bateaux is completely hidden from view from its street entrance, and that there is a longer-than-expected drive on a single-lane dirt road to get from the street to the winery. Although I didn't encounter any traffic trying to leave when I was entering, eluding oncoming traffic would have been tricky.

The parking lot is much kinder than many other vineyards. I did not really see specific ADA spots which were likely full but the parking lot is small and easy to navigate with a short stroll to the tasting room. We got there later than I wanted but we were not the last and were able to tuck in seats in the back which is perfect. I was a bit surprised that they didn't have water at the tables for everyone and the menu was very small with two different paninis - a caprese and an Italian meat one.... we got one of each and then split them.Which was pretty perfect and both were really good! Their regular menu is much different and I look forward to trying it when I visit for a regular wine tasting. We started with a glass of the Rose Bubbles. It was perfect for a late summer afternoon. We drank a bottle of the Moscato Frizzante, a definite favorite. We are both hummingbirds, is in love with sweet wines. Sometimes the sweet almost assaulting on the palate. I was completely amazed at how smooth, soft yet supple that wine is! We asked to try their blends with sangiovese which they have 2. I was attending with my friends mom. My friend passed away recently and was married here so she wanted to get bottles of her favorite wines. There were 2 people working and he just set the tasting wines down (which were tiny samples in tiny wine carafes), mumbled what they were without pointing which was which and practically ran. Since we were actually drinking wine, our glasses were full so we had to drink from the carafe, which felt a bit tacky plus they are reds we were trying to actually taste... I realize drag Bingo is also happening but a tasting glass to give some aeration to the two wines is helpful. It was such a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. The few annoyances we had, I imagine were likely from them having to navigate a larger group. It is so nice having a place like this so close! I also have to express that the inclusive events make me more anxious to support them with my business.

Light flaky biscuits with tasty, slightly spicy gravy full of sausage. My partner had the breakfast sandwich, also enough for two. There were 6 of us and we ordered various meals - Captains Choice, Biscuits and Gravy with eggs and the Siren's Breakfast Sandwich. All the breakfasts included the cornmeal biscuit. We also ordered a Hawaiian cinnamon roll to be split with everyone. Our meals arrived and we were all excited to eat. We reminded our waitress that the cinnamon roll hadn't been brought to our table yet. She said "Oh, do you want to eat that here or have it to go?" We said we wanted it for here. My sister ordered scrambled eggs, but was given over-easy eggs. My husband's eggs were completely forgotten. My husband offered to eat my sisters eggs that were cooked wrong while she waited for her scrambled eggs to be prepared and delivered. I opened up my biscuit to put the whipped butter on it that was provided and the biscuit was luke-warm and didn't even melt the butter. I took a bite anyway and was disappointed at how dense, crumbly and salty it was. Thinking it was just me, I didn't say anything to my fellow dining companions. I moved on to the rustic potatoes and even though they looked nicely browned, the centers were undercooked. Unfortunately, the bacon was also overly salty. Because of all the salt, I went through two full glasses of water during my meal, of which I only ate half. My brother-in-law who had the biscuit breakfast sandwich said "what is so salty??" I said it was the biscuit. Everyone else at the table agreed. Someone else said their bacon was overly salty too. My brother in-law also mentioned that she forgot his cinnamon roll again. Although the coffee was good, we were never offered any refills. We all left 1/2 or more of our meals on our plates. We were all clearly finished with our meals when the waitress came back and asked if we were ready for our cinnamon roll. By then it was too late. We said no. We didn't want it anymore. No plates were ever cleared from the table. She just returned with our checks and left. We were very disappointed. As my dad used to say, That was a 3 timer. First, last and never again.
