Spent $100 and they make it known that they are not happy about making a 'special' order. I really hate giving bad reviews but the food here was....strange. We did the evening buffet and it was quite the variety. There was boxed Mac n cheese, frozen American meatballs, breakfast sausage links, and then normal Chinese food such as eggrolls, crab Rangoon, general chicken etc. They had steamed dumplings that looked promising but they ended up being dumplings with the frozen meatball in it. They had a strange casserole that was the fake crab with melted cheese on top. The sushi was even strange...there was one that appeared to have strawberries? Shang Hai (former Weeks Restaurant) is a casual Chinese restaurant and lounge, which serves up the standard Chinese menu at moderate prices, most items $7.55-$16.95. 22 Luncheon Specials ($6.55-$7.95) and Dinner Specials ($9.55-$10.95) are offered. They also feature a 50 item All You Can Eat Buffet (Lunch - $7.25 and Dinner $11.55). After a day in the Lakes Region, I stopped at Shang Hai for dinner since I was hungry and wanted some Chinese food before the drive back home. I decided to eat in and was seated promptly and given hot tea and ice water. I immediately went for the Dinner Buffet. The selection of buffet food was pretty good (over 50 items), though not as extensive as New Hong Kong Buffet in Belmont. Some of the hot items included egg rolls, spring rolls, fried rice, lo mein, chow mei fun, Gen Gau's chicken, pepper steak, shrimp & mixed vegetables, Kung Pao chicken, steamed mussels, snow crab legs, mac & cheese, Chinese donuts, fried dumplings, dim sum, crab rangoons, soups, and more. Cold items included salads, sushi, shrimp cocktail, mac salad, potato salad, fruit, jello, puddings, choc cake, mini cakes/brownies, palmiers, vanilla/strawberry trifle, soft serve ice cream, and more. Some of the food on the buffet was actually pretty good including the dim sum (pork), mussels, chow mei fun, and fried dumplings. The steamed custard dumplings were okay, which had minimal sweet filling. The peel & eat shrimp were deveined & cleaned with tails left on. Some items were not very hot and on the dry side including the mac & cheese (orange boxed kind) and the initial batch of fried rice. The wontons were very soft and mushy, sitting in the hot broth too long. When a group of college aged kids showed up here for the buffet, I was relieved to see them since several of the items on the buffet began to be replenished with fresh food by the staff. The new batch of fried rice and lo mein noodles was pretty decent. Overall, I had a filling dinner at a fair price and the service was good and friendly. I haven't eaten inside of this restaurant. I have only ordered take-out. Every time I order takeout the food is either wrong or overly spicy for a meal that's listed as "not spicy" and usually is at other restaurants. I don't usually leave reviews, especially not bad ones, but my most recent meals had a slew of black coarse hair in it. I have very light hair and so do the people in my household. The black hair was wrapped around various pieces of my chicken and was very comically long. That was absolutely disgusting. We should have stuck to our plan of getting pizza instead. EW! read more

My friend and I came in tonight for dinner and, frankly, were not overly impressed. While not terrible, we have certainly experienced better. The restaurant, while perhaps a bit dated, appeared to be clean (as were the rest rooms), and the young lady that greeted us was very pleasant. The waiter - a young Oriental gentleman - while not rude was not particularly welcoming or friendly. He never came by to ask how things were or to check on our water, or to remove dirty dishes. I have only been to the buffett- and it is just ok. The decor is like cheesy seedy chinese restaurants in a bad kung fu film from the 80s. The food was mostly hot. They are a little slow to refill the dishes, and they could keep it a little cleaner. It is a small buffett, but it has the staple dishes.- lo mein, pork fried rice, beef & broccoli, chicken fingers & wings, crab rangoon, ect. They also have sushi roles, and those haven't made me sick yet, so that is a plus! Desserts are home made, but I would actually skip those and go to the ice cream machine. The wait staff is quick with clearing dishes and drinks, so no issues with the service. Bottom line, it's not great, but if you want a chinese buffett in Laconia, its the best of many bad options. read more

This however is my favorite Chinese restaurant because they serve vegetarian General Tsao's "chicken". It is fantastic. Even some of my meat eater friends like it. We try to go once a month. Normally do not write reviews, but wanted to comment on the Sharing Hai. Recently moved to the Lakes Region from South NH, and while driving around the area to get acquainted, stumbled across the Shang Hai. Since my female companion and I are fond of Polynesian / Chines Buffets, we decided to give the place a try one evening, and were very pleased, and more so as our stops there continued. This is a nice Local Spot, away from the Touristy type places, and is Comfortable and Cozy, We have now made this place a regular stop, three to four times a month. Have frequented various Chinese / Polynesian Buffet Restaurants throughout NH and found the Shang Hai's buffet selections to be varied, tasty, good quality, reasonably priced, and the staff very pleasant and friendly. Although there is also a menu to order from if one is not in the mood for a buffet, we have always opted for the buffet, and never disappointed with the selection or the quality. Selections are also added to from time to time, something new to try, which makes it even nicer, but there are always my regular favorites. For those that indulge, there is also a full liquor license, but our favorite we share is the Scorpion Bowl : ) This is a Great Local Spot that we would recommend, and have. Had to give it a star. I ordered pan fried noodles with veggies and received chow mein. I know it was chow mein because I have had chow mein before. Also, someone wrote chow mein on the top of the container so... Pretty obvious. I called (we had it delivered) and the woman was condescending and rude. Told me I was wrong. Laughed at me. So rude!!! Anyhow, delivery arrived freezing cold. Paid $40 for a pupu for 2 and crappy chow mein we didn't eat. Rude service, cold delivery, wrong product, prices way too high for this garbage! I'm not going back and if encourage everyone I know to avoid as well! Go to Taipei Osaka down the road. This place just completely blew my mind in the worst way. I didn't know it was possible to have a horrible experience for a PICK UP ORDER. I called to place my order and was given no time frame to pick it up. I asked for a total and got one and the lady asked for my phone number. She reiterated the last few digits to verify and the call was over. About 30 minutes later my boyfriend drove down the street to pick up the food. He said there was no record of the order at all, nothing ever written down or typed in the system. After getting angry with them the manager finally came out who apparently took the order. She had no recollection of any of it, it was like we never even called. They had the audacity to ask for our order, tell us to wait the twenty minutes yet still pay full price. When my boyfriend asked what they would do about the mix up they said oh, nothing. Not even monetary wise, but could've prioritized our order to prevent additional waiting. Needless to say he walked out wth no food. When he got home he told me they weren't that busy so there's no reason for them to be as frazzled as they were. The food was cold, lacked flavor, and had too many onions ( the doggy bag truly was for the dogs. ) The restaurant was in need of repair and updating, specifically the chairs and please do something about the smell.
