I'm in disbelief this place gets these high ratings. It's quite possibly the worst cheap Asian food I've ever had in the US. Chicken powder soup with wontons. Udon noodles with cheap oil and a few rubbery chicken pieces. "Soup dumplings" that were not soup dumplings at all and fatty chicken wings. Yikes. I didn't take more photos because it was too depressing. Throw in some plug in air fresheners, loud annoying songs from the 90s and $70 of the worst food I've ever had the displeasure of eating. The food was awful. The chicken was weird. It didn't look done. It was white in color, it didn't look appetizing. I ate two or three strips/pieces. It was soft and over seasoned. Which made me think that it was not real chicken breast but a processed piece of chicken, gross! The sauce and the veggies were ok. The pan fried potstickers were mushy. Honestly, I never liked Shanghai mama anyway the food was too oily. You could see the oil on the food the next day. Maybe Cincinnati doesn't have real Chinese cuisine to judge against. I cannot for the life of me understand how this place got 4 1/2 star avg rating. It really shakes my faith in Yelp. The only thing that stood out for me was our server and the restaurant furnishings. Outside of the the food was not even fast food take out quality. We had a pork egg roll, chicken egg roll and pork dumplings for appetizer. First clue was they came out in about 3 min so no way anything was fresh and the taste showed. I won't go into specifics because we've all had frozen Chinese warmed in the oven or microwave. Based on the appetizer we decided to not try anything. To crazy for dinner. I ordered chicken and broccoli with a spice level of 6 out of 10. My son order Szechuan chicken 3 out of 10 spice. Again, food was out to us in less than 4 minutes. Very soupy sauce with little to no spice. Broccoli had clearly been in some type of water or sauce for awhile because was mushy and that would have been impossible in the time it took to serve. My sons Szechuan chicken tasted almost exactly like mine which is a travesty to any true chef chef. A brown sauce versus a chili Szechuan sauce are not even close in taste. Worst of all the chicken was clearly frozen strips, microwaved and then thrown in both of our sauce. My fried rice was was soaked in soy sauce and sticky and salty. It was one of the few times that he and I have not finished our apps or our dinners. The menu says in memory of a chef. A former owner maybe? I hope they rethink their cooking performance, as this restaurant would not honor any true Szechuan chef. read more

We came into their new location due to it being the closet Chinese restaurant near where we were. Decor is nice and they have a full bar. It was a delicious meal overall. Dishes purchased were the Vegetable Shanghai noodles, Mongolian Chicken, and Shrimp and Pork fried rice. All of the entrees were amazing and a nice portion. Our waitress Amber and the bar tender Gregory were both great and our cocktails were perfect! We did the pan fried pot stickers and the Shanghai dumplings as well as the egg rolls. Tonight was our first but not the last visit to Shanghai on Elm. Excellent from the moment we were greeted at the door. Service was not good but exceeded expectations and excellent. Our server arrived immediately and suggested first courses. We opted to look over the menu. I had the Shanghai beef with fried rice . Our server gave us the 1-10 choices and I chose a 4 ( a 3 would be sufficient for my heat level) . My friend ordered the pepper beef with brown rice. Our meals arrived within 10 minutes beautiful bowls steaming hot and truly delicious. Our bowls were filled with vegetables and tender beef with great sauce. Mine a bit spicy . Every bite was delicious and some of the best Chinese food I have ever had in Cincinnati. Frankly better than the the Chinese food I had in Beijing! This is a true find. Service and food are WOW! I went here late on a Wednesday evening. Thankfully they were open, and we could enjoy a late dinner without feeling rushed. Incredible service, incredible food, absolutely perfect experience. Thanks to Shanghai on Elm for being open late! We attended a concert downtown that ended about 9:45pm or so and nothing was open - except this lovely place. And since we were the only customers, the service was very good. So, anyway, the food. There were three - that's right - THREE wontons in my wonton soup! I've never had more than one anywhere else! (Maybe that says more about me and the places I tend to patronize tho...) So that was fab; the broth was delicious as well. We both had the Mongolian beef. Just delicious. We really enjoyed the sauce and the beef was juicy and tender. The only thing that left us a little sad was the fried rice. Bland. Next time (and we'd definitely go back) we'll just have steamed rice and be very happy, indeed. read more

We are from Cali which is a mecca for all Asian foods and it makes me sad that Cincy thinks this place is almost 5 stars! it means they don't know asian food at all. I had to return the beef and broccoli because my body literally would not let me ingest the meat I think it was borderline rotten. Probably the best Asian food I have ever had! We were in town for a wedding and went back again the next day because the food was so good! Every dish was full of flavor and fresh. The Pad Thai was THE BEST I have ever had and we eat Thai a lot. It was moist and so full of flavor. The server was fun and very patient with our crazy family. The restaurant is warm and inviting and felt like we were in someone's living room. Clearly a neighborhood hang out as there were regular customers at the bar watching the football game!
