I used to frequent Bangkok Bistro often a few years back, both dinner and for lunch. Always enjoyed it. It has been a few years since I have been, so my family and I decided to go for a birthday dinner. It definitely was lacking. We went on a Monday night, there were only a few tables and our server just wasn't overly into it. Highly disappointed that they weren't serving sushi. Even the sign on the door stated sushi was served every evening, but we were informed it is only weekends. The lettuce wraps were mediocre at best. They were primarily full of peas and carrots - left a lot to be desired. The pad Thai was good as well as fried rice. The chicken was ok, and the duck was ok but the pork was the best. Really just not great but not horrible; service was lacking, sushi availability needs to be updated and a little more effort into the content of the food would bring it back to what it once was. read more

My friend and I went for dinner on a Friday evening. It wasn't busy at all and the staff was very friendly. We ordered spring rolls which were good and then my friend ordered the drunken noodles and I ordered the pad woosen. They give you a really good portion size!! And everything is made to order and the spice level was great. I did a level six which was perfect. The space is great for a date night, a friend hang out night or you could bring your family. it's very clean, and the restroom is clean. The only issue you will have is parking... It's street parking but on a very busy street. So you will probably have to park with a neighborhood and walk over. read more

Personally, I'd skip the appetizers - our golden bags and spring rolls were nothing special but the main course more than made up for it. Another top restaurant in Cincinnati. I've been here four times and the food has been amazing every time. I love Thai food and this place doesn't disappoint at all. The THAI WINGS are so good! They are crispy everytime with a flavorful sauce (ask for extra) and fresh peanuts and scallions. The DRUNKEN NOODLES have been a great addition to my life. Our visit here was pretty spontaneous. We wanted to try a nearby burger place that actually was not open yet. I had been eyeing the Mediterranean place nearby so when my friend wanted Asian, I didn't have a chance to check them on Yelp before we came in. I think the 3.5 stars this place currently has is a touch underrated. I can't speak as to the authenticity of the menu and its Thai-ness or Asian-ness, but I think if you come here hungry with an open mind for general flavorful food, you won't be disappointed. The place doesn't look fancy or anything, so I wouldn't come if you're trying to impress a date, but things are clean and nicely spaced out. I got to try my classic favorite go-to Thai plate, the drunken noodles, as well as some of the duck curry. The drunken noodles for whatever reason come with only chicken and shrimp. And the entire dish is plentiful. The shrimp are jumbo sized so with just 4 shrimp in the dish (yes, I counted), it's still plenty of shrimp. I typically prefer pork or beef but it was well-cooked tasty protein. I chose a spice level of 6 and I think it was perfect. Nothing that assaults your mucous membranes, just a constant tingling burn as you eat. The duck was absolutely amazing. I can see why some people might be turned off by the skin of the duck but it's a bit like eating pork belly, some people don't like the fattiness. The meat tastes like a chicken thigh that is more fresh and I think that's what people mean by gamey? And the curry just takes it to a whole another level. I think we humans should eat duck more often. Maybe if the skin was crisped and the fat rendered, Americans would be more for it. The food was plentiful, the service was kind and quick, and there's little fanfare. The prices seem a little high but you don't find yourself hungry when you get home, and some people I'm sure will have leftovers. Ok, if you don't love the Pik Pow Chicken or the Tom Yum Noodles, I'm not sure we can still be friends. I CANNOT believe I've never reviewed Bangkok Bistro before!!?? I've been going here for years, and while other Thai restaurants are very good, I have never been disappointed here. You can look through their Yelp pix, and see me representing during various qualities of bygone camera-phones. Thai food is classified into 5 characteristics: Sweet, Sour, Spicy, Salty, and Bitter. My favorite dishes balance 4 of these elements, all but bitter. That's what the perfectly balanced IPA is for!! So I can't remember all of the menu items I've tried here, both eat-in and to-go. All great. Seaweed Salad, Carrot Salad, Tom Yum Noodles, Sukiyaki, Sushi, Chicken Pik Pow, Drunken Noodles, the list goes on. For the last couple of years I've pretty much gotten to-go orders, but I remember the service being good, and I still recognize servers that must have been there for years now. Parking can be an issue in the area, but there are reserved spots in the (very) cramped gravel lot out back. Apparently if you drive a Porsche SUV, you also don't have to pull over at all in order to make it easier for both 2-way cars to be able to get through at the same time, BONUS! smh Oh, I probably should mention that their prices are maybe double those of other Thai places. My entree tonight was $17. But for an occasional treat of high quality, it may be a couple dollars more than it should be, it is still worth it. read more

Bangkok Bistro has been getting a lot better on their consistency and quality over the last year! Every single time I've ordered food here it has been really great. I recently discovered a new favorite menu item: the naked pad thai with chicken ($13). I'm trying to eat healthier, and the naked pad thai is sooooo delicious and packed full of veggies and protein! Basically it's their usual pad thai recipe, but instead of rice noodles they use shredded carrots. If you're low carb, this is for you! It's honestly so good that I get it at least twice a month. My husband still orders the crispy pad thai ($16) which really is delicious, but I can't eat fried pad thai that much and still lose weight. haha The price is high for Thai food, but the portions are generous...I always have enough leftovers for lunch the next day. Honestly I stopped checking into Bangkok Bistro on Yelp because I eat their take out like every other week...It was starting to get embarrassing how much I eat here. haha read more

This is a go to place for lunch during the week, especially when I'm with a group anywhere from 2-6. Usually I get the pad Thai which is great, but yesterday I tried the spicy ginger chicken and it was delicious!! I would definitely try either dish, depending on what you're in the mood for. And even with the spicy ginger sauce (and all dishes) I was able to select my spice level so if you're in good shape if you don't like things super spicy. Service is great. Space is a good size. Overall I recommend. Especially for weekday lunch when you don't have a lot of time to sit and wait. read more

Ok Thai food with a weird menu. For one, the menu didn't include many dishes which I would consider Thai restaurant favorites (Pad See Ew, squash curry, etc). It also was odd in that some of the dishes had descriptions, but many didn't. When we asked the waiter what the difference between the two menu items called crispy duck, he didn't know. To his credit, he grabbed another waiter to explain to us, but it was a process to figure out the menu. We ordered crab rangoon and pork potstickers to start, and both were pretty good. I had the Siam Noodles, and the others I was with had one of the crispy ducks and a duck curry. They gave plenty of meat and vegetables, but were a little skimpy on the sauce. You order spiciness on a scale of 1 to 10, and as someone who is not good with spicy, I didn't even find the 7 very hot. Overall I'd say it's pretty average Thai food. read more

After all these years and multiple restaurants coming and going along this stretch of Erie Ave, Bangkok Bistro continues to shine. Consistently putting out quality Thai and sushi offerings, with great service in a comfortable setting. I'm not sure if it's a Bangkok original, but the dish they call crispy pad Thai is my personal favorite. I'm not a traditional pad Thai fan, but this stuff which is loaded with crispy noodles, chicken, shrimp and fresh veggies stands the test of time. I've not seen it anywhere other than Cincinnati, and no one does it better than Bangkok Bistro. If you like spicy, don't be afraid to go 7-8. Consider starting with a cup of Tom Kah soup and a Sapporo draft. I think you'll see why I consider this little gem is a "must hit" every time I'm in town. read more

With Forno and the other spots on Erie Avenue, this place gets lost in the shuffle. That's too bad, because DLW and I had a fine experience here on a Friday date night. It's a very pleasant atmosphere they've conjured, with a big bar area up front and dining room to the side. It's yet another Asian (non-Japanese) restaurant where they feel obliged to put sushi on the menu. Can we please stop with this nonsensical convention? Thai food is wonderful, and needs no extra enticement for the timid diners who fear the unfamiliar. What caught DLW's attention about this place was the promise of hot pot. There are a few different dishes that go by this name, but the one here is akin to Japanese shabu-shabu, where thinly sliced meat and vegetables are cooked in hot broth kept in front of the diner, and eaten immediately. It's a good way to eat a lot of food yet stay relatively healthy, and it's one of DLW's all-time favorites. They have pot heaters built in to some tables and the bar for added convenience. You choose a broth, protein and starch when ordering. A standard veggie plate comes with each option. I chose a spicy tom yum broth, a beef and chicken combo, and vermicelli. Everyone has their own way to eat hot pot, but the way we've adopted is to drop the hard veggies in first and give them a few minutes to cook, then drop the meat and leafy veg in one at a time, letting them cook for just a few seconds before extracting. You can dip the items in the sauces they offer before eating. Once the protein and veggies are consumed, dump the rice or noodles into the broth and enjoy as a soup infused with the flavors of the other items. Our server remarked that we knew what we were doing, which isn't often the case. Everything was served nice and fresh, and the flavors were spot-on. It was a little pricey compared to other hot pot we've encountered, but DLW left feeling very happy. We had already eaten at che this evening. We decide to check out Bangkok bistro. It was our first time here. Again with all the Asian restaurants here in town they have the eclectic combination of sushi and or X Asian cuisine. We were greeted by the hostess to lead us to a table. Our waters with lemon appeared rapidly. On a Wednesday evening at 9 PM it was quite empty as they close at 10 PM. I ordered the pad Thai level six. Upon reading yelp elite reviews I should've probably gone with the 78 maybe even a 10. My friend ordered the scallop stirfry with cashew sauce. The pad Thai came out very hot. Spice wise again with level 6 just a mild kick. There are probably five not up to quite 10 pieces of shrimp in my pad Thai. And flavor wise it was probably on the sweet end. There are not a lot of beans sprouts. And as far as the crushed peanuts, I thought it was lacking. The positive aspect, is that it was not super greasy. Portions of been a lot bigger. The scallop stirfry with cashew sauce, was quite unfortunate. Minimal scallops were seen. Not to mention that the sauce was more on the suite in versus the savory. In addition, it was very bland. Again, portion size was quite small. Server was nice and appropriate. Our waters were refilled in a timely fashion. Overall, may be a good place for take out. Would probably give it one more shot. Ambience wise, not quite what I expected from a Thai restaurant. It's not your typical Thai restaurant with a spice rack. Definitely a better option compared to all other Thai places in town. I have been to almost every Thai place in Cincinnati and this one is definitely better than all other. Their food actually tastes better. They are true to their spice level and most ingredients are fresh and authentic. Ambiance is very nice and private. They also have a sushi bar! Our waiter was excellent, he knew all about the different dishes and paid close attention to order. When there are about eight Thai-sushi restaurants within about a one-mile radius of each other, as in the Hyde Park/Oakley/Mt. Lookout axis, standing out from the pack takes something special. As far as I can tell, Bangkok Bistro lacks that something special. Bangkok Bistro is apparently the granddaddy of the East Side Thai places, and it kind of feels like it. It is more comfortable and spacious and attractive, but a bit more dated-looking, than some of its nearby competition--the decor includes dark green carpeting, lots of wood, and exposed brick, and the tables are large, heavy, and wooden. Somehow it all feels a little like the 1990s. The crowd was somewhat diverse, as far as an almost all-white one goes: families, quite a few older Baby Boomer couples, and on the other evening a couple of kids having a pre-prom dinner in fancy-pants prom duds. And the menu might be the granddaddy of Cincinnati pan-Asian menus. It's larded with rather tired Japanese items, and a rather lengthy sushi menu is offered. (You know what? I'd be elated if just one Thai restaurant on this side of town jettisoned all of its Japanese stuff--leave it to the Japanese, who will do it better--and replaced it with a bunch of authentic Thai food that most of us folks in Cinci have never heard of.) Anyway, the food is completely edible if pretty much indistinguishable from most other Cinci Thai. The veggies taste pretty fresh, but the sauces don't seem very complex or deeply layered. At least this was true of "Seafood Madness," a kind of standard Americanized Thai basil dish loaded with scallops, shrimp, et al. (And yeah, I did feel a little sheepish about uttering the words "Seafood Madness." And that's not even the most embarrassing dish name on the menu: There's actually an entree called "What a Feeling." "Flashdance," anyone?) And although the portions are pretty large, the prices are, too. In the end, Bangkok Bistro is serviceable enough, but ultimately it just feels like it might be going through the motions. read more

Saturday night my wife and I headed out to a soon-to-be neighborhood restaurant for us, Bangkok Bistro. Our friend Amy (who badly needs to update her blog) was having a birthday celebration at the Hyde Park Thai restaurant. My wife called in a reservation for our group earlier in the day and upon our arrival we found that the group had grown by two and the restaurant easily accommodated that. Service for our table of ten was good, not particularly fast, but we weren't in a hurry anyway. Our server asked right away if we were going to have separate checks, which made everything so much easier, so that gets a huge plus in my book. The group started with two plates of edamame as an appetizer along with a bottle of wine and various other drinks. I skipped the edamame since I am allergic to soybeans, but I'm told it was good, though steamed soybeans can't be that hard to prepare. My wife decided to split some sushi rolls with Amy while I opted for the Thai Spicy Chicken from the "General Fare" selections. Most meals can be ordered on a spiciness scale from 1-10. After reading some reviews of people ordering 11s and 12s, I decided that 8 would be suitable for me. I do love spicy food after-all! The decision ended up being perfect for me as the dish was definitely spicy but not so powerful that you couldn't taste anything else on the plate. This dish is prepared with a mix of vegetables including onions, green peppers, mushrooms, carrots, broccoli, baby corn, and peas. The serving size is large and I would have easily been able to take some home if my wife hadn't helped me with it. The price was also right at only $10.95. Many of the other dishes in the noodles and rice section of the menu were closer to $15 each, which seemed a little high. I'm comparing this to our favorite Thai restaurants in Denver where most dishes were under $10. Typically we have found that most things are little cheaper here in Cincinnati, so Bangkok Bistro would definitely be a little expensive overall. Fortunately the taste of the food was easily on par with our favorite Thai restaurants. My experience at this restaurant was very disappointing. I had been once previously years ago, and had a good experience so I was originally looking forward to visiting again. The service was quite slow in all aspects of the visit. We were seated in the back room and had to wait quite awhile for the waiter to return to take our order. I ordered chicken with "delight sauce". The entire dish had almost no flavor and was just extremely bland. Like those joints, it serves an Americanized, unsubtle knock off of ethnic food.n They've managed to make the signature note of Thai food to be Heat: peppers, hot spice. Nothing more refined. "I want to take you to my favorite Thai restaurant," my best girlfriend said. Off we went to Bangkok Bistro, located in a part of Oakley that I don't often frequent. Sitting directly off of the bustling Erie Avenue, parking is somewhat difficult. We ended up in a gravel lot behind the restaurant, which was jammed packed with cars for neighboring businesses. Once inside, we were welcomed into a warm Asian-inspired environment with spaciously positioned tables. Plenty of room to fit groups and for each to have their privacy. The menu boasted with options, but we went with our go-to Thai orders: mango curry with fried tofu and veg, and Ginger Basil Stir Fry. My mango curry arrived in a giant, Shanghai Mama's sized bowl. After several servings, it seemed like the tofu and sauce was endless! I had to ask for a take away container. My friend's stir fry was just as hearty, overflowing with veg. We stuffed ourselves to the brim with this deliciousness; I can definitely see why this is my friend's favorite. Not really knowing the menu and partially in respect to the staff I went with Chicken Pad Thai, my go-to in times of Thai food decision-making crises.
