An absolutely charming classic Chinese restaurant. Smallish in size, the ambiance is huge! This place is exactly what my wife and I have been searching for. Having been in business for 28 years, the service and food was excellent. Friendly and personable, our server treated us as regulars. The menu contains all of our favorite dishes. We had potstickers, egg flower soup, egg roll, paper wrapped chicken, fried wonton and chicken fried rice. Shrimp and vegetables rounded out our meal. I'm pleased to say that everything was delicious! We were looking for a classic Chinese restaurant and found it. No fusion, no fast food, no cafeteria table settings, just old school classic Chinese dining. Finishing with fortune and almond cookies was the perfect ending. We have been coming here for at least 13 years. Our favorites: house special fried rice, mongolian beef, lemon chicken, fried wontons, any shrimp dish. Everything is delicious. Such a great place to get Chinese food! Shanghai Place has withstood the test of time in Mission Viejo. Went here the other night to get take out and it was delish! The employees are friendly, efficient and helpful. Inside is clean, and well thought out. Everytime we come here I always love it. I had such a kind and unexpected experience here. I stopped here needing to use the restroom with my son, even though I wasn't a customer, and they welcomed me with genuine kindness and zero hesitation. That level of hospitality really stuck with me. It's rare to come across businesses that treat people with such simple generosity, and it made a lasting impression. How did I not know about this place right next to me?? My BF and I have searched for good chinese before, we ended up at Din Ho, which was not that great but we had no idea MV had a great chinese spot. Such a cool little place tucked inside a plaza on the corner of Jeronimo and Los Alisos. When we went in there was only another table being used, and by the time we were done, there were 3 more groups there, but still plenty of seating. The service was fast and the owner was so sweet and has a sweet personality! They gave us hot tea and crispy wonton strips with dipping sauce and then we browsed the menu, which included lots of different meals to chose from. Only took about 10 min or so for the first dish to come out, probably because they weren't very busy. I would say the portions are decent for 3 of us. We got 4 dishes plus the appetizer platter and we had plenty of leftovers. The house chicken was ok - lacking in complex flavors, somewhat plain but lots of chicken in dish. The Kung Pao Chicken was delish! Wish it had more spiciness though, very mild. The Egg Foo Young was really good, we got the shrimp style, so they put shrimp and veggies on top of the patties. The Beef was really good - more spiciness and lots of onion. Finally, the Pu Pu Platter was great to try a variety of items like the fried shrimp, cream cheese wontons, chicken in foil, dumplings, egg rolls, etc. Def the best we have had out in the MV/LF area, so happy we found them! read more

The service here is exceptional. The owner Helen knows old school customer service. She packages the left overs for you and provided a special plate for me to bring to my wife in the rehab. This is by far my favorite Chinese Food Restaurant. We have been going to this restaurant since the late 1990's to present. And it just keeps getting better and better each time. We tried this place for the first time tonight and what a gem! The older lady greeted us and was so so sweet. We told her what we liked and she made some great suggestions off the menu. For an additional fee, you can have a full dinner with soup, fried appetizers, and ride. The walnut shrimp was perfect - very very sweet with lots of walnuts. The Mongolian beef was also great and we spiced it up with some chili sauce. The service was fast and ambiance is good. Great little find! We will be back soon. read more

I'm sorry to say after so many years we won't be coming back. Last week I found a short, curly hair in my daughter's leftovers. I told my husband and he said "we found one the last time, too." Shanghai Place is located in a small shopping center on the border of Lake Forest and Mission Viejo. It's in the same center as two of our favorite places, those being Patsy's Irish Pub and Xclusive Mexican Seafood. After years of wondering about Shanghai Place, we decided to give it a try. I'm glad we did. The dining room is relatively small, but it's a comfortable space. I would say it's serene because it was quiet with classic pop music playing softly in the background. The service was great. The ladies running the front of the house were all sweet and very much on the ball. They handled our meal more or less perfectly. What about the food? The food was great, too. We ordered Broccoli Beef, Cashew Chicken, the House Chow Main, and steamed rice to go along with the entrees. The portions are generous, so much so we had plenty left to go in to-go boxes. I washed mine down with a couple Tsingtao as one does. The prices are very reasonable. We will definitely be back, and I suspect Shanghai Place will now be part of our regular rotation. We just tried this for lunch and it was so delicious. They have an awesome lunch special that is a great deal including a soup, egg roll and rice on the side of a large selection of mains. I had cashew chicken and my son had kung pao beef. My other son had the pot stickers. Everything was so fresh and tasty. The service was good and the food arrived within good time. I am so glad that we found this place and will be back time and time again I think. There is no outdoor seating, but the inside is comfortable with many tables and booths. I think there were around 7 other tables being served when we were there and it did not feel cramped. read more

Had a really nice meal from Shanghai Place as well as excellent service. I picked up my order with my 2 year old son in tow and seeing that my kid with sensory issues was overwhelmed threw in free almond cookies the moment we arrived for him. If I had dined in, the dimly lit ambiance would have made for a nice atmosphere. Once I got home and unpackaged everything, I found the food to be delicious as well. I ordered the house special chicken, and made it a combination with fried rice, egg soup and egg roll as well a wonton and chicken wrapped in tin foil. It was all delicious and I will definitely have leftovers but since they put it in a reusable plastic tin it'll make it a breeze to reheat. Admittedly I was surprised at the bill being $23 surprised me a little bit with the house special combo as it seemed that it would be closer to $18 or so after taxes but math was never my strong suit and their prices could have changed since the menu online was updated so beware. I don't think anything shady is going on so that's why I'm not deducting a star. Looking forward to getting takeout from here again soon. read more

Our go-to local Chinese take-out restaurant. The manager/owner who always takes our food order is great, usually chucking in free egg roles/cream cheese wontons if we order a decent volume. We almost always get the same thing: Sizzling rice soup, house special chicken, mu-shu pork (or kung pow chicken). Always served hot and easy to bring home and serve. We were down in Languna Hills from Oregon to visit some family and felt like going out for Chinese for dinner. Our daughter who lives in Irvine suggested Shanghai Place, and we're so glad that's where we went! Shanghai Place is tucked away in a small mall, but don't let the small storefront fool you -- the food was better than anything we've had in Oregon or Washington State, or in San Francisco's Chinatown. We ordered five dishes to share family style: lemon chicken, kung pao chicken, house special chicken, beef brocoli, and mongolian beef. All were well-prepared and delivered in large portions with fried and white rice. The spicing of the dishes were just right, hot enough, but not overly-spicey, and our main dishes was delivered to the table just after we finished our cream cheese wonton starter. The staff was very attentive and caring to us, making us feel like family. It was particularly nice that one of the wait staff was even fluent in ASL, a treat for our daughter who communicates best in American sign language. This place is very unassuming at first. You see the little sign, the blinds closed, and the subtle open sign and don't think much of it. Despite this, walking in you're greeted immediately and welcomed warmly by the employees and helped very quickly. The service is without a doubt a strong point here and there I can guarantee you everyone will be treated like a regular customer here. The ambiance is simple, ultimately, as it's a small restaurant, but it's nice and calm inside and the place is kept clean. They have great portions and the menu is very diverse. I think some of the flavor has gotten lost a bit, but I went on Christmas Eve, and they were pretty swamped with orders.
