Whenever I generally complain about not knowing what to eat (sadly often), my friends and family say "what about that Chinese place" because everyone I've taken here has loved it. I made the mistake of trying this place again. Not sure what I was thinking but the service was actually much worse than the food. The Eggplant tasted like they had emptied an entire salt shaker into it and was inedible. Our server, for lack of a better word, Isabel, was extremely rude and inattentive the entire time. Isabel thought it would be a good idea to focus on the other tables while basically ignoring ours. The worst part was at the end of the meal after I had requested she take the charge off the bill for the horrible food. Isabel begrudgingly agreed to take it off with not as much as any type of apology. It then took her probably 10 minutes to return after gleefully chatting with other tables and walking by us maybe 4-5 times without making eye contact. Once Isabel produced her handheld POS terminal and asked me how I would be paying, I called her out on the lack of courtesy and basic manners. I asked her if she'd be apologizing for the lousy food and she literally said "No, it's not my fault." All the time she had this maniacal grin on her face that was not only out of place but a little on the psychotic side. Isabel kept glaring at me every time she walked by as if to say I don't owe you a thing and there's nothing you can do about it. After speaking with the manager (Shu) I understand how Isabel has this attitude. He was oblivious to the lack of decency and common sense displayed. He just kept repeating the fact that they had removed it from the bill without the least bit of remorse. All this time I was speaking with Shu, Isabel kept walking around with this crazed grin on her face to hear what we were discussing. I've honestly never experienced any server like her in my entire life. The best Shu could do was to tell me the next time I came in they'd seat me with another server. The next time? This speaks to the oblivious nature of the employees at China Moon. He actually thought that after that, I would be returning. Isabel was the weirdest server I've literally ever had in my life and it was clear at the end that Shu didn't have a clue about customer service or the dining experience. I would avoid this place at all costs unless you enjoy being treated like garbage by people that don't have any clue what service is. read more

There are plenty of options, but few that consistently deliver on all fronts, flavor, service, and quality. That search finally came to an end when I visited China Moon Restaurant for the first time. Dilemma solved. What initially drew me in were the glowing Yelp reviews, so credit to my fellow reviewers for pointing me in the right direction. The photos didn't hurt either, and they ultimately convinced me to stop by on an early Sunday evening. From the moment I walked in, the experience started strong. I was greeted warmly, and the service remained attentive and friendly throughout my visit. My server was prompt and engaging, sharing that the restaurant has been in business for over 40 years. Judging by the steady flow of customers that evening, it's clear they've built a loyal following. When trying a new Chinese restaurant, I like to keep things simple and stick to classic dishes as a baseline. Dining solo, I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and Chicken Fried Rice. Both dishes arrived quickly and were prepared with care. The Kung Pao Chicken stood out immediately. The sauce was well-balanced (flavorful without being overpowering in amount) and the ingredients were thoughtfully composed. It featured tender chicken, peanuts, red peppers, and green onions, with a welcome addition of zucchini that added both texture and freshness. Every bite hit the mark. The Chicken Fried Rice was equally satisfying. It arrived hot and fluffy, with high-quality white meat chicken, egg and a nice distribution of green onions throughout. The flavor was solid and comforting; a quick touch of salt and pepper at the table brought it exactly where I wanted it. While I only sampled two dishes, the menu is extensive and offers plenty of options to explore on future visits. Service-wise, there's honestly nothing I would change . . . it was that good. Based on this first experience, I'm comfortable giving a strong four stars, with every intention of revisiting soon and possibly raising that rating. If you've been searching for a standout Chinese restaurant in South OC and haven't quite found "the one" yet, it may simply be because you haven't been here. Another great dinner at China Moon. We returned after a not so great experience. I'm not sure if that was just a one off night, but the management team reached out. Tonight we opted to have the crabby wontons, and the potstickers to start. And then for our entrées, we had chicken fried rice, Kung pao chicken and the steamed fish. Both the appetizers were served hot and fresh. They were crispy and not greasy. It was the first time trying the steam fish. It took a few minutes longer, which was fine and it was served in a beautiful platter presentation. It was delicious. The fish melted in your mouth. And the sauce was delightful. When we placed the order for the chicken fried rice, we were asked if we wanted soy sauce added to it and we said yes. I thought that was just a normal ingredient, but I guess I was wrong. It tasted delicious. There were a few pieces of white meat chicken that were chewy. It is tossed with rice, egg, and perhaps a green, leafy, vegetable lettuce, perhaps it tasted good, but it wasn't my favorite. The kung pao chicken is a classic dish with red chili pods, peanuts, and chicken and a brown sauce with zucchini. I thought it tasted great. There was a perfect amount of caramelization and spice, except my companion thought it tasted a little burnt. Overall, the meal is very good. We always return. Service was great as always. Visited China Moon on the week of Chinese New Year and they had a Special Menu for the celebration. We come here every couple of months when craving Chinese food since it is convenient located near our home and we are so happy that service and food is always pleasant and pleasing. Even though restaurant is always busy we have never had to wait no longer than 5 minutes of wait time and food is always worth the wait & the staff is so friendly and welcoming they make you feel at ease. Ambience is cozy with dim lighting not much of privacy separation from other guest if you're not seated at inner booths located in the middle of the restaurant. Overall restaurant is fairly tight and small for the amount of seating they have, but I guess understandable for the demand & how popular it is. Are go to order is fried rice, lo mein noodles, walnut shrimp and sometimes orange chicken or beef broccoli. And we always like to start with wonton soup always delicious. Strange things. No fried rice. No egg flower soup and won ton soup Is a $2.00 upcharge. 4. Hot tea is $2.50 a person. ! 5. We ordered lunch specials. Orange chicken (1 hot 1 mild). and white rice. One won ton soup. 2 hot and sour ( needed salt) or more seasoning. Cashew nut chicken and rice. 6. Lunch came. Both Orange chicken came with the hit dried red peppers in it ! We pulled them out and it still tasted mild so the bits could eat it anyway. However. The orange chicken was dried out hard lumps. Reminded me of cooked chicken feet ( I don't eat that). It wasn't good. 7. The cashew nut chicken didn't have a chicken sauce, it was dark and just a butload of soy sauce. The chicken was dark meat which I don't eat. The sauce was awful. We told her to take it back and take it off the bill. 8. The won ton soup was good actually with lots of vegetables. We will try another restaurant next time. Hoping for good Chinese food. We wanted a more quieter evening tonight so we decided to visit China Moon. Not a whole lot of people in the restaurant when we got there. Service was good and food was brought out quickly. Fortunately we got there a bit early because the dining room was full in less than an hour later. I had my usual, three ingredients taste, sautéed shrimp, beef, and chicken with mixed veggies. This dish is always good. The shrimp was a bit fishy but not too bad. Hubby had the cashew nuts chicken. The flavor was good but it would have been better if it was made with white meat. We do not like dark meat chicken. We checked with our waitress Lucy later and she confirmed that it is dark meat. Lucy suggested that we can request for white meat next time and the kitchen can do it. Lucy has been there a very long time. We have had her a few times before and according to her name tag, she's been there since 2009! Speaking of being loyal. Overall, we had a good meal. My husband and I were in the mood for Chinese food today. We decided to try China Moon. We ordered mu shu pork and Mongolian beef with won ton soup. We also ordered the brown rice. I was impressed with their reviews. Unfortunately we were not pleased with their food. The portions were small. The Mongolian beef was just ok. It could have had more flavor in the sauce same with the mu shu pork. We could have gotten three wraps instead of two. The won ton soup was bland and there was a surcharge for that. We were also charged an additional 3% for using our charge card. Really? But at least we had our fortune cookies. But no my husband's fortune cookie had no fortune in it. Big disappointment again. My husband was bummed! Final decision- we will be going elsewhere the next time we crave Chinese food. read more

We were down in Mission Viejo and were craving some Chinese food and saw this place had good reviews. Living in Irvine/close to garden grove. I would say this place is no where near good Chinese food. My crispy noodles barely had any shrimp/chicken. The chicken was over cooked, while the zucchini was under cooked. The whole thing was pretty salty. I also ordered the hot and sour soup, which didn't have enough spice or vinegar in it to make it sour. Overall the food was really salty and disappointing. They were pretty packed for a Sunday evening. They are pretty short staffed, so it took a while for our food and check to come out. They were friendly though. Best orange chicken, hands down. China Moon is a bit of a strange Chinese restaurant, because it somehow has great food and great service simultaneously. The waitress was the nicest person ever! First, that orange chicken really blew me away. Panda Express orange chicken, by comparison, has great flavor, but has consistency issues. Other places make the sauce too sour. China Moon is made to order, so it's perfectly crunchy and the flavor is amazing. The flavor is not too strong and the candied orange flavor brings so much depth to the dish. It's kind of silly to treat orange chicken as some kind of gourmet food, but it really is great here. I'd come back just for this. Also, it comes with a bowl of rice. Mu Shu was a hit. It's a cabbage, egg, and pork in a tortilla-style wrap. It comes with sweet hoisin sauce and it was very savory, I loved it. It's pretty hard to find a mu shu place and it was great here! Lastly, the shrimp lo mein. The shrimp here has a bit of that snap that I go crazy for and it was a good companion to the other dishes we ordered. It had good flavor, but it felt very carby. I would feel a bit strange eating it by itself, but it was good with other stuff. By comparison, I wouldn't feel the same way about pad thai or other noodle dishes from other cultures. Still good though. I can't stop thinking about the orange chicken. And as you can see, the portions sizes were pretty good. I spent around $13-$17/dish. If you love orange chicken, seriously, give this place a shot. You won't regret it. It's probably the best orange chicken I'll ever have. The other stuff is good too. read more

Food is excellent, if not a bit pricey but I understand the cost of everything has gone up. Service is quick but they get crowded so I recommend reservations! The only feedback I would offer is the inside area is relatively small, so something to consider if someone must use a walker or is in a wheelchair. The service staff are wonderful and will accommodate you as best they can, just something to be aware of.
