Finding a true "go-to" spot for Chinese cuisine in South Orange County has always been a bit of a challenge for me. There are plenty of options, but few that consistently deliver on all fronts, flavor, service, and quality. That search finally came to an end when I visited China Moon Restaurant for the first time. Dilemma solved. What initially drew me in were the glowing Yelp reviews, so credit to my fellow reviewers for pointing me in the right direction. The photos didn't hurt either, and they ultimately convinced me to stop by on an early Sunday evening. From the moment I walked in, the experience started strong. I was greeted warmly, and the service remained attentive and friendly throughout my visit. My server was prompt and engaging, sharing that the restaurant has been in business for over 40 years. Judging by the steady flow of customers that evening, it's clear they've built a loyal following. When trying a new Chinese restaurant, I like to keep things simple and stick to classic dishes as a baseline. Dining solo, I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and Chicken Fried Rice. Both dishes arrived quickly and were prepared with care. The Kung Pao Chicken stood out immediately. The sauce was well-balanced (flavorful without being overpowering in amount) and the ingredients were thoughtfully composed. It featured tender chicken, peanuts, red peppers, and green onions, with a welcome addition of zucchini that added both texture and freshness. Every bite hit the mark. The Chicken Fried Rice was equally satisfying. It arrived hot and fluffy, with high-quality white meat chicken, egg and a nice distribution of green onions throughout. The flavor was solid and comforting; a quick touch of salt and pepper at the table brought it exactly where I wanted it. While I only sampled two dishes, the menu is extensive and offers plenty of options to explore on future visits. Service-wise, there's honestly nothing I would change . . . it was that good. Based on this first experience, I'm comfortable giving a strong four stars, with every intention of revisiting soon and possibly raising that rating. If you've been searching for a standout Chinese restaurant in South OC and haven't quite found "the one" yet, it may simply be because you haven't been here. China Moon Restaurant may not be fancy, but it delivers where it counts: great food, excellent service, and a welcoming, clean environment. I have a feeling it could become a favorite for you, just as it has for me. Enjoy!

Lots of free parking. Came for dinner and there were lots of empty tables but as we walked in, she asked us if we had any reservations- we said no and she said let me check and she walked back there for a bit and then came back and then seated us, not sure why they were empty if reservations were needed. Maybe they didn't have enough workers. We came before another party, but their order was taken first so they got their food first so we had to wait a while. They should go in order. The server did say that if we ordered steam fish, it would take an extra 15 minutes which we would be fine with however, all the other foods also took a long time. If you pay cash there is 3% discount. The food here is exceptional. The fish fillet is excellent. Noodles were delicious. The stir fry beef was tender with pretty cooked onions. Rice refills complementary. I will definitely be coming back here regularly for the food. The lady at the front said that the restaurant used to be hers but now her kids took over. Glad this place exists! Food is delicious, just have to be patient and have time.

I had not been to China Moon in over 5 years. I remembered it being delicious but it was not so. The food was expensive and just ok. The service was great but I'm not sure we'll be going back.

Another great dinner at China Moon. We returned after a not so great experience. I'm not sure if that was just a one off night, but the management team reached out. Tonight we opted to have the crabby wontons, and the potstickers to start. And then for our entrées, we had chicken fried rice, Kung pao chicken and the steamed fish. Both the appetizers were served hot and fresh. They were crispy and not greasy. It was the first time trying the steam fish. It took a few minutes longer, which was fine and it was served in a beautiful platter presentation. It was delicious. The fish melted in your mouth. And the sauce was delightful. When we placed the order for the chicken fried rice, we were asked if we wanted soy sauce added to it and we said yes. I thought that was just a normal ingredient, but I guess I was wrong. It tasted delicious. There were a few pieces of white meat chicken that were chewy. It is tossed with rice, egg, and perhaps a green, leafy, vegetable lettuce, perhaps it tasted good, but it wasn't my favorite. The kung pao chicken is a classic dish with red chili pods, peanuts, and chicken and a brown sauce with zucchini. I thought it tasted great. There was a perfect amount of caramelization and spice, except my companion thought it tasted a little burnt. Overall, the meal is very good. We always return. Service was great as always. Parking out front. Nice casual environment. Lots of takeout orders as well.

Whenever I generally complain about not knowing what to eat (sadly often), my friends and family say "what about that Chinese place" because everyone I've taken here has loved it. Some of my favorites have been every dumpling, egg rolls, the scallops, the filet mignon chow fun, and the pork fried rice. Meat is always tender. The young lady that served us was so attentive, kind, and patient. I think the sun comes out every time she smiles. Cute casual atmosphere. They are busy for a reason.

It's fast-casual, but everything was clean, the food came out quickly, and everyone was incredibly welcoming. We tried the bulgogi bowl, soft tofu soup, the muscat grape lemonade, and the pomegranate lemonade. The grape lemonade was such a fun surprise--it uses Asian muscat grape instead of the artificial "American grape" flavor we're used to. It's a rare flavor to find and was honestly so refreshing. Both lemonades came out beautifully presented with fresh fruit, which was a really nice touch. The soft tofu soup was excellent. The broth had a rich, silky mouthfeel and tasted homemade rather than like it was made from one of the premade soup bases. It was deeply flavorful without being overwhelming. Everything was served piping hot, exactly as these dishes should be. The bulgogi bowl was also delicious and came with a very generous portion of beef. Serving sizes overall were huge--both of us ate until we were full and still had enough leftovers to take home. Prices were very reasonable, especially considering the quality and portion sizes. If you've been wanting to try Korean food but weren't sure where to start, I think this is a fantastic introduction. Authentic flavors, generous portions, friendly people, and a great value. We'll definitely be back.

The beef and onion had great flavor, topped with roasted garlic that really added to the dish. It came with a little kimchi on the side, some lettuce, and a few slices of radish. My only suggestion would be to make the radish in-house rather than using the standard store-bought kind. I think that small touch would really elevate the dish. I'd definitely get the bowl again. The service was great, and I also had a carafe of cold barley tea, which was excellent and really hit the spot on a hot day. If you're looking for a Korean place in the area, I'd recommend giving this casual eatery a try!

After a couple minutes the server returns and tells us that the sushi rice isn't quite ready so it'll be a couple minutes, no problem for us. After a couple more minutes he comes back and seems really hesitant to say what he wants to say but finally comes out with "I'm really sorry but I won't be able to serve the sushi roll or the sushi with that comes with the bento box, I don't think the chef wants to make it." Given the restaurant opens at 11:30 and we were the only customers there with an arrival time of 12:45 I expected 1. The sushi rice would be ready because it was over an hour after opening 2. For the chef to make whatever is available on the menu. My family isn't one to make a scene so we let the server know that it was fine and we would order something else. The restaurant is small enough that you hear every exchange and when our server went back to give our order the two chefs spoke to each other in Spanish and then to the server in english. My family and I are filipino but unfortunately for the chefs in the back I do understand Spanish and all I will say is that they were definitely giving our server a hard time. I try my best to be very gracious because you never know what someone is going through but I will stay true to my experience and what I witnessed. I personally do not condone any bullying and so I really did not appreciate the way they were treating our server or the effect it had on our dining experience. Won't be returning to this location.

The restaurant was nearly empty, so I was a little surprised by the mildly dramatic reception about wondering where we'd been. For a moment I thought perhaps a search party had been organized. Fortunately, that was basically the end of the weirdness. Our server was excellent. Friendly, patient with the kids, knowledgeable about the menu and most importantly, honest. We came in wanting to try a little of everything and he steered us well. When a table wobbled, they fixed it immediately. The kids got the right utensils without us having to conduct negotiations. He even suggested putting the grilled squid in early because it would take longer. Small things, but restaurants are largely collections of small things. The reason to come here is the soba. MINAMI makes it in house and you can tell. It has that slightly stubborn chew good soba should have, not miraculous, not the greatest bowl of soba I've encountered in my life, but very good and unmistakably made with some care. I switched my order to cold bukkake and added grated mountain yam and a poached egg. Delicious. The additional $7.75, however, briefly made me wonder whether the yam had been carried down from Mount Fuji by hand. I understand restaurants are expensive now. Ingredients are expensive. Labor is expensive. Existing in Southern California is expensive. Still, $7.75 for grated yam and an egg is $7.75 for grated yam and an egg. Even our server seemed aware of the absurdity, which somehow made me like him more. The grilled squid was another winner. Cooked properly, tender instead of being transformed into the rubber gasket squid so often becomes. I would've happily eaten a larger piece, especially for the price. The fried oysters were more complicated. Beautiful crunch, nicely fried, but ours carried enough of that funky, ocean floor oyster flavor that nobody at the table was fighting over the last one. The hamburg steak was fine. Perfectly competent. Nobody will write home to Japan about it. The lightly battered shrimp was much better. Crisp, airy batter with a creamy roe style sauce that worked beautifully. The shrimp themselves had a slightly stronger seafood flavor than I prefer, which keeps the dish out of masterpiece territory, but I'd order it again. Oddly enough, one of my favorite things on the table was the simplest, the kids' hot udon. The broth was light, clean and comforting rather than beaten to death with salt. The children absolutely demolished it. They were considerably less impressed by the soba, but they are also two, four and five, so I will not be consulting them on noodle craftsmanship just yet. The room itself is comfortable and reasonably clean, though there are little signs of wear. A few tables weren't being used, ours needed stabilizing and the place doesn't have that immaculate precision you sometimes get from a great Japanese restaurant. Nothing alarming. Just noticeable. That's basically MINAMI. A few rough edges surrounding some genuinely good cooking. It isn't cheap. Order enthusiastically, as we did, and the arithmetic starts getting adventurous. Some dishes feel fairly priced, others make you stare at the receipt for a moment and reconsider your understanding of root vegetables. But the handmade soba is good. The squid was good. The udon broth was excellent. There were enough interesting things on the menu that I left already knowing what I'd try differently next time. And our server turned what could've been a merely decent meal into a genuinely enjoyable one. That's worth something. I'd come back, just perhaps without accessorizing my noodles like a Porsche.
