All the food is room temperature except for the shu mai which only came after I asked about it twice. I had to send my shrimp roll back because it was too cold to eat and overall the food is on the saltier side. There is no service what so ever, no one checks on you, no water refills. I requested some red vinegar for dipping and was told that only comes with the soup dumplings. I need to come back to this restaurant during the weekend. We came on a weekday and with the way service is without the carts coming around any more loses some of the appeal of dimsum. We had to order from a phone app and couldn't even order an extra bowl of rice for the kids since it wasn't on the app. Some of the food seemed to come a bit lukewarm. Service was also slow considering there were barely any customers at the time. I'm not sure if there were less employees right now due to the pandemic or not. We frequented Shanghai for many years pre Covid. Food was overly salty (I do not Normally shy away from salty foods). Service was nonexistent. We stopped to charge our EV at a supercharger pod and this restaurant was right across the street. We had timed our road trip to arrive in Austin, with a need to charge, during lunchtime so we're were excited to see a dim sum eatery. The two of us shared the soup dumplings with shrimp and the Happy Family. The dumplings were delicious. Large bite-sized tender wrappers encasing gently seasoned shrimp and a perfect bright broth that provided a delightful burst of flavor. The Happy Family had the perfect ratio of proteins to vegetables. Shrimp,chicken and beef was perfection Ed. The sauce was classically robust. We enjoyed it all immensely. I went to Shanghai for the first time tonight. I haven't had dim sum since the pandemic happened. And I couldn't find a decent dim sum place until now. I couldn't believe they've been around for a while now. How I didn't find them before? I don't know. The food is pretty good! The flavor is what I remember what dim sum is supposed to be. The food presentation is nice. Though for me it's a bit weird there weren't carts going around, but I think I like that they make the food as we order. That means the food is fresh! I read some reviews that others had to use the toast app to order but the hostess/server was nice and she said we didn't have to do that. She gave us a paper where we can write down how many of what items. I do have a suggestion-- maybe laminate them and use an erasable marker to have the customers mark the quantity of the item. Regardless, I like that we had that option to give the order to someone. They are understaffed. But I think the service was still good. The hostess/server was good. And she was careful and respectful of our space and most especially of the food. She placed them down neatly and presentable. I also think the restaurant is clean. It smelled clean and the restroom is clean. I was surprised that they weren't busy for a Friday night. Austin folks are missing out. I do think this place is worth a try. My friends decided a rainy day would make a good day for dim sum. We had a large group (9 people), but did not have to wait to be seated on a Sunday at around 1pm. I hadn't had chrysanthemum tea in a very long time, so I really welcomed and enjoyed it. They did have most of the standard items as other dim sum places. Among the items we ordered were chicken feet, shrimp shumai, turnip cake, pork buns, soup dumplings, egg tarts, etc. All were average to good. It takes a while for the carts to come to your table, so try to get as much food as possible when you can. A few times we ended up just telling them what we wanted and they would bring it over personally to us. Since I did not have high expectations for this place, luckily I was not very disappointed. This review is for dim sum to go. I can understand using an app to take your order, but not one that charges a service fee of 15%. Customers don't have an option to order otherwise. This is a poor way to do business. As far as service goes, it took a LONG time for us to receive our order and I can see that extends to the diners eating there. The food was ok, but nothing really stands out. I do like that they have cheung fun and would have preferred a thinner noodle. Did not like the taste of chicken feet here. Dim sum is traditionally served at tea time only, but Shanghai Restaurant serves it at night, at least on weekends. So far as I know this restaurant is the only one in Austin, for now, that serves dim sum ('touch heart') in the evenings, and this is a good break for Austinites who might want to have it at dinnertime. After three visits here I've come away happy each time! Although I'm not an expert on Chinese cuisine, this is some of the best dim sum I've had in the US. We ordered siomai, har gao, pork ribs, chicken feet, Chinese broccoli and pork bun. Very very tasty. Customer service is pleasant and place is very clean. We went there right when they opened so it wasn't crowded. However when we left about an hour later, the place was bustling. The only downside is the price. It was a bit steep. Our order came out to be close to $70. For comparison, other places on the west coast would probably cost in the low $50's. But then again, we are in Austin so I guess that's ok. Absolutely terrible service. The worst I've ever had. Our waiter looked like he was 16 and delivered some of our food to the wrong table. When we asked him about it, he picked up the food from the other table and tried to serve it to us. When we called him out on it, he disappeared. Couldn't even refill our waters after we asked. We spoke with the manager who apologized and brought us what we wanted. The food is wonderful too. That said, you're expected to prepay for food that may never arrive, and they add a mandatory 20% service fee. That's about the only way they can get tips, I imagine. The dim sum dishes are mostly good nd the service is excellent. It is not cheap, but I expected that. If you like flaky egg tart, you have to order it. The looks wasn't special, but it is so flaky and buttery. It actually melted in your mouth. This is the best flaky egg tar by far. I would have given four stars, but the 1 star less is due to they added 20% service charge. As new to the QR code order, I didn't catch that, so I put another 20% on top of that. Was craving dimsum since covid has denied me for such a long time. Decided to try this place because it had more selections for to go than my usual place. Online ordering was simple, but the real problem came when it was time to pick up the food. They said the food will be ready by half an hour, but no. I arrived there half an hour later, and had to wait another half an hour (total of one hour). They also had one of our orders wrong. The food was decent, but they were so understaffed. The poor server was serving more than 10 tables of dine-in on his own, and had to also take to go orders out to the car? And apologize to everyone for the delay in their food.
