This might be the best dim sum in Austin now. I actually had never eaten at Shanghai having grown up in Austin. I didn't have their food until around COVID when we got dim sum to go a few times. I remember at that time thinking it was pretty unremarkable, and also quite expensive for dim sum. Fast forward to this year. I'm not sure if they have new ownership or new cooks, but the difference is night and day. I've been a couple of times now for dine-in in dim sum and each time was awesome. You can order off the menu or by QR code. They definitely focus on the classics but they're all executed really well. Standouts for me were the pan fried turnip cake, full of turnip and super sweet, the shrimp and leek pan fried dumplings, shrimp stuffed eggplant, and chili wonton. What makes them unique to me is that the food is all cooked to order and comes out hot and fresh. The fried items are crispy and hot and everything else you can tell just came straight from the kitchen. This avoids the one issue with carts which is that the food has been cooked who knows when and has just been sitting in a steam cart for an unknown amount of time. Also since you order off the menu, you can get exactly what you want instead of having to wait for a cart to come by. The service is always friendly and I've never had to wait to be seated, even on a weekend. If you haven't come here in awhile or written it off in the past, I'd encourage you to come and try it again. Right now it's a hidden gem but if more people realize how much better it is now, it might not be for long. Ordering is through QR code and they did not know what order went to which table. They put food on our table and took it back to a different table TWICE. The good: the dim sum tasted legit. Back to Shanghai and I believe they improved so much since the last time I visited! We came with a large group of 12 people and all to be seated at a lazy Susan with no wait during Sunday lunch. Ordering is still done with the QR code so we had one person order all the food and then we split the bill afterwards. You have to pay first before the order gets sent to the kitchen. The service has improved slightly, with us being so close to the kitchen. We were able to flag down servers to help us get an extra plate, tea cups, etc. Got a variety of dim sum classics: hargow (shrimp dumpling), siu mai, rice noodles, custard buns, chicken feet, chow fun, egg tarts, soy sauce noodles, charsiu bao, turnip cake My favorites are the siu mai, chow fun and custard buns! They also have non-traditional dim sum dishes such as soup dumplings, which actually originated from Shanghai. We got them and they were ok. We ordered a second time to get more custard buns but it seemed they ran out so it took some time for them to make them fresh. When they finally came, the buns were not smooth and it really looks like the custard was about to burst. Someone bit into theirs and the custard exploded onto their shirt. However, we all had a good laugh and still enjoyed the food. Have to have tea during dim sum so we also got our puer and chrysanthemum tea mix. Not sure if they usually charge for this, but we got it complimentary! Yay! If you are familiar with dim sum, then you know these are smaller dishes meant to be shared among the group! I love me sum dimsum and if you do too, you should check out Shanghai Restaurant! No wait at all on a Sunday afternoon and parking is super chill. Ambiance and decor is lackluster. Expect a self serve experience with the option to dine in. After being seated and given some water, you're pretty much on your own with ordering and paying via phone. Not a bad sitch if you prefer less social interaction, but can be annoying for some. The upside of this is that food came out FAST. We ordered the pork shumai, shrimp rice roll, spicy wontons, sticky rice, shrimp stuffed eggplant, and steamed Chinese broccoli. With tip, this came out to under $70 for two very full individuals. Everything tasted great and hit the spot! I wish they had my favorite dimsum dish (fried taro ball with minced meat) but the variety of items on the menu was pretty good. It was strange because the shrimp balls did not taste spoiled shrimp. Just this one. *Chinese Cucumber Salad 拌黄瓜- 5/5 super crispy and the flavor is refreshing. It's still crispy and not soggy the next day too! The only con is for some reason this time they made the cucumber salad super oily with the chili oil. * Pork Rib w. Black Bean Sauce- $6.95 豉汁蒸排骨- 1/5 this is usually my go to dish but this pork was smelly and it seems like the the alcohol used didn't burn off or there was a really weird after taste. It was super porky which usually is not like this. Very mild on the fermented black beans flavor. Taro was flavorless and off as well. * Chicken Feet w. My dim sum cravings and tastebuds were pleasantly satisfied on this Sunday afternoon. The crispy fried noodles shrimp balls were my absolute favorite. These were tender bouncy balls made out of shrimp covered in thick noodles and fried to perfection. The soft, slightly chewy chow fun/ flat noodles with shrimp and bbq pork, were both mouthwatering and gently pleasing my tastebuds. Their steamed dumplings har kao and shumai were definitely better than anywhere else consumed. The orange chicken was classic, sweet & slightly tangy, crispy fried chicken in a well seasoned sweet orange saucy coating, was well-enjoyed. The stuffed eggplant was different, beautifully made. I was eying the good looking spicy wontons,and soup dumplings, but flavorwise these were the least favorite of that visit. Although they have an open kitchen that shows how dumplings were hand made, and plenty of dim sum options were a la carte. I was actually hoping to see rolling carts that serves you table side and you can pick from the cart. But maybe 2 pm. was not prime hour, and a la carte was a better way to serve their customers freshly made. I'm much pleased with the food received. Shanghai Restaurant is located in a strip mall at Huntland Drive and Middle Fiskville Road. It's essentially on I-35 South, north of 290 and south of 183. It shares a parking lot with Galaxy Theaters and some other businesses. If you've never been here before, you'll be seated by a friendly staff member, handed some menus, and then you'll be told that you order by the QR code shown on a sign by the table. Currently, the restaurant uses Toast. The catch here is that once you've ordered, you'll pay immediately, including the 15% service fee, in order to get your food. Once that happens though, food comes out hot and fast: we sat down, looked through the menu, decided to order Shrimp Shumai, Shrimp and Cilantro Dumplings, Chicken Feet, Luo Buo Gao, Xiaolongbao, and BBQ Pork Cheng Fun, paid for the order, and ate all the food, and left, all within 30 minutes. The Shrimp Shumai and Shrimp and Cilantro Dumplings were both stuffed to the brim with succulent, snappy, clean shrimp--no mush, filler, or paste, and no shrimp poop. Seasoning was on point; and the dumpling had a great cilantro aroma inside along with the shrimp. The Chicken Feet were savory, with a slight warmth from the peppers. The texture was soft and with slightly gelatinous fall apart texture, and it was extremely easy to eat and separate the tendon and flesh from the bones. The Radish Cakes were also quite good in terms of flavor. These ones had larger chunks of radish within, they were savory, and they did not require any extra sauce (nor was any sauce provided). They were not mushy from excessive rice flour. Very munchable and easy to scarf down. I would advise against the Soup Dumplings here. First, the soup within with very thin, not rich. Second, they come steamed in these metallic foil tins. No soups are provided, so they are difficult to eat. I ended up using the tin as a spoon, but they deform in shape; you are liable to spill soup no matter how hard you try. Much better soup dumplings can be found elsewhere. Special Noodle is an example which comes to mind. Finally, the BBQ Pork Cheung Fun (Rice Noodle Roll) was pretty atrocious. The roll stacked on top (with less sauce) had an unpleasant tasting metallic herbal taste. It was unclear where this was from the pork or the rice noodles. The BBQ pork itself was quite bland. Only when consuming the rolls on the lower portion (the ones swimming in sauce) did the taste become more acceptable. Of course at that point you are just tasting the sauce, which hides the unpleasant underlying flavor. Overall, Shanghai Restaurant has some pretty good dishes, e.g. shrimp based, but there are certain ones on their menu that can be improved significantly. Expect to prepay for your meal. In essence, this is like a food court or hawker stall, except it's just a single restaurant with AC and plenty of seating. Don't expect much interaction with staff. read more

If you want dim sum and don't want to drive out north or north west or don't want to pay $15 for shu mai then this a good casual home style option. The dim sum isn't refined by any means and it probably wouldn't pass the thin wrapper skin test or it won't have a high number of intricate folds but you can satisfy your dim sum cravings here. The dishes are a dollar or two more than the quick stuff you'd find at the deli counter of 99 ranch. Definitely better than there or any of the frozen stuff you can buy. Ordering was simple - you can do it through QR code. I do wish they had free WiFi if you can't connect but they can also do paper menu and you can check off what you want to order. The shu mai and soy sauce chow mein were my primary draw. I thought the shu mai was ok. The filling could've been chopped better with a better ratio of pork and shrimp and the soy sauce chow mein was a little on the salty side. It wasn't too oily which is always a good indicator. I got the pork ribs with black beans - could be less fattier with more black bean and steamed a little longer. The sticky rice was fine which the filling had a little more Chinese sausage. In all solid 3 stars as it hits the spot. I'm finding 3-4 stars a good sweet spot these days as I'm getting tired of paying for the more expensive fancy restaurant group places opening up. Plus it's easier to eat here since you don't need a booking many weeks in advance. Tea isn't free but I think that's the norm these days. I ordered way too much but feel satisfied. A pretty solid dim sum restaurant. I liked the variety and price wise, it was pretty decent. My personal favorites that I always get are the Black Bean Ribs, Har Gow (Shrimp Dumplings), Shu Mai, and Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls. This place also does a really good Salt & Pepper Tofu. Shanghai Chinese Restaurant has been a favorite of mine for years. When I lived nearby, it was my go-to spot and it was always good. Recently, I went back with my parents, and I'm happy to say it's better than ever. We ordered the sesame chicken along with some dim sum, and everything was incredible. The chicken was clearly real, fresh, high-quality chicken--crispy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The dim sum was just as impressive, and now I'm genuinely torn every time I go between ordering dim sum or that sesame chicken because both are that good. They've also added some new menu items that are absolutely worth trying. After trying the pineapple bbq puff, I went back the next day hoping to have it again, but it was sold out--which honestly just tells you how popular and good it must be. The atmosphere has noticeably improved recently too; it feels warmer, more welcoming, and just an even better place to be. Even though I live farther away now, this is still my go-to takeout spot. I'll happily make the drive. I visited with my parents after seeing an email about Mr. He's 10-year anniversary--what an incredible milestone. The work he does truly shows in the food, the consistency, and the care put into the restaurant. I hope more people get the chance to experience how special this place is. I was hoping the Yelp reviews were because people don't appreciate authentic dim sum. I have had my fair share and this was not a place I would return to. Nothing was exceptional enough to have more than one piece but the pork ribs and the beef ribs were just plain bad. All bone and on the pork it was all chewy fat. No meat. On the beef it was just not tasty and it was chewy. I am quite disappointed. Attached is a photo of what we ordered to go. We ate 2 mins away so that didn't affect the integrity of the food. The restaurant inside is just OK, pretty basic, so it's not part of Austin's hipster Asian food trend. My husband is a big fan of dim sum and I had to plan to get some for him this weekend for his birthday. Shanghai serves dim sum all day -- at least on a Saturday. The restaurant is quite large and spacious. As others have said - service is non existent and they automatically charge 15% service. You order via the QR code and someone brings the food out. Apart from that, there is no human interaction. I was surprised that they did have a handful of vegetarian items on the menu. But we mainly went for the shumai and har gow. read more

This has been our go to which is 17 miles for us to get our dim sum urge. We prefer carts to pick and pace as we go but very hard to find such dim sum places these days since Covid! So here we are. In the past, service has always been good, however the friendliness and communication of waitstaff was always a challenge. In addition to ordering through the toastapp however this last visit was much smoother and waitstaff was on par. Friendly, attentive and we able to get what we asked for without the language barrier and attitude. The food came out within 5-10 minutes after we ordered. It was piping hot, fresh and delicious. The only disappointment is that the duck did not come as a smaller dim sum portion, you have to order 1/2 duck for $30-$32. There were no curry calamari or crispy taro that I am a big fan of. But it didn't break us. We left satisfied. I don't care where you go to dine. How you treat your customers makes a big difference. It makes a much more pleasant dining experience. We're from San Antonio visiting and was expecting more from Austin. The standard dim sum picks were ok, not as flavorful as Houston or even SA! The shrimp with rice sheets were not fresh. Also they tack on automatic 15% PLUS service fee and then because I wasn't paying attention, was promoted to give MORE tip with the default on 15% additional tip. No wonder the waiter was grumpy about taking our picture...he had no incentive to provide any good service. We spent $160 including three takeout dishes which at least did not have automatic fees. We came here on a Sunday evening, which I'm told is the best time to go as it can be very packed during weekend lunch. My FIL is from Shanghai and says this is the best place for dim sum in Austin. The egg tarts, sesame balls, shrimp dumplings, and turnip cake are just a few star dishes if you're looking for dim sum. Eat any savory dim sum with their house made chili sauce and it elevates it even more. No soy sauce needed! My favorite dish to share was the beef and broccoli - which reminded me of Vietnamese shaken beef by the way it was cut. It was juicy and easy to chew that my toddler loved it and kept asking for more! I also LOVED the fried garlic shrimp. It was battered nicely and had good salty flavor. When I went they were pretty understaffed so our service was just okay, you do have to try to flag down someone if you need anything. Stumbled into this gem for lunch while I was passing through Austin area.... I had not much expectation on Asian food in the area as I live in the Bay Area.... I told now Teenage Rooster and the GF they would be having their first Dim Sum experience on a recent weekend. Still sad my favorite DS closed during covid; heard recently it's coming back. So, this was the test to see if they would like/understand what Dim Sum is. Well, there were lots of frowns. I didn't order anything risque like chicken feet! Here's the list for review purposes. Soup Dumplings, Egg Drop Soup, Wonton Soup, Shrimp Dumplings, Shrimp Rice Noodle, Pork BBQ Steamed Buns, and Chicken Egg Rolls. The look in their eyes; WTF did you bring us to eat? OMG, they didn't get it. Here's my seasoned take on the experience. You have to order on Toast so I ordered twice. Each transaction with a 15% service charge. Where is my dedicated server? Random peeps helped us. And those random peeps didn't do a very good job. Tea glasses weren't refilled in a timely manner. No frills dining like plastic table cloths. I'm shocked I got a metal fork! I reminded myself this was the former Mason Jar back in the day. Foodwise? Soup Dumplings were nice; paired well with my choice of vinegar sauce. Egg Drop Soup had an acceptable color and flavor. Corn was actually crunchy which sometimes get lost in a buffet setting. She didn't like the Wonton Soup because it had a shrimp component. I found it acceptable fare. The Pork Buns arrived and they looked at me like I was trying to get them to eat a meteorite. It's bread and meat people; perhaps a little too sweet on the BBQ sauce. It's my opinion they should have left a cauldron of sauce for the Shrimp Rice Noodles as it paired with every dish. Chicken Eggrolls seemed foodservice but could have been made in house. Pork Shumai was the best bites paired with the noodle sauce. Better than ordinary table Soy sauce. Food acceptable but charging a service fee for sub par service ends up in a not so good 2 stars. My friend and I stopped in here after going to a film at the Galaxy Theater. First walking in was off. There was a book to sign in but no person to seat us. I put our names down and time along with previous names. The restaurant was sparsely occupied. Finally a woman came up and just said come. So we followed her to a table and she said click here for menu and walked off. We were able to order and pay online and a 15% tip was added with an option to add 5,10 15 and 20% more. This was even before we knew who I server was. Apparently they charge 10$ to make a reservation. No option to leave it at 15%, the preassigned percentage. So shortly after ordering, a man appeared and dropped off my soup. It was lukewarm and tasted like beef with the egg texture. So that was disappointing. Asking to send it back seemed as though it wasn't an option since nobody asked how our food was or even spoke to us. Then a woman came up and brought the tea and walked away with no words. Then a bit later same man brought our entrees, setting them down on the opposite side of table and didn't ask who ordered what. So we reached across the table to get our appropriate food. It was bland and on the same level as a fast food restaurant but with just under 20$ per entree. Nobody ever came back to ask about refills or how our food was or anything. We wanted more water at least and nobody ever came back. I got up to get a take away container and finally a woman who was eating at a table got up and got the containers. This is a solid but overpriced dimsum restaurant in Austin. My family is used to ordering dimsum off a menu, and we did not like the QR code ordering system as it is very difficult for a whole family to use one small phone screen to order food. Paying in advance in a sit-down restaurant is very strange, especially for a Chinese restaurant. When I asked a server if they could confirm that my order went through, they weren't sure how to check. Otherwise, the food was good! 2:15 on a Thursday, there were two parties of two finishing up when we arrived. After that the restaurant was empty except for us. First time having dim sum here, so ordered several classics to get a sense of the place. Har gow, pork shumai, xiao long bao (soup dumpling), chicken feet, baked egg custard. They didn't have the egg custard and offered us steamed custard bao instead. The food was just OK. Nothing terrible, nothing amazing. Didn't look or taste completely fresh. The xiao long bao was nicely soupy, but the meatball inside tasted odd with a weird herb/seasoning I don't usually taste. Chicken feet portion was extremely small. Bao dough to custard ratio was too high. As many other reviewers have noted, the prices seem high for what you get, but I understand that's just part of the new post-Covid reality. Our server/host was very nice and efficient. Three big minuses: the noise, the restroom smell, and the included gratuity. Noise: The kitchen is very loud with lots of shouting, and they keep the doors open directly to the dining room. It didn't take help that we were seated directly in front of those doors (in an almost empty restaurant). Also, the server/host's cell phone at the front desk was on and loudly ringing / text message alerting regularly throughout our meal. Restrooms: Just stinky. The whole restroom area really. Gratuity: They automatically added 15% gratuity to the check for a party of two. We would have tipped at least that much anyway, but I think that's tacky. So total was $43 for two people to eat a very small, underwhelming meal. We both left still hungry. Won't be returning. read more
