Shrimp shumai, supreme soy sauce fried noodles, stir fry green beans and turnip cake

From the amazing service, fast and friendly, to the delicious foods. Everything was fresh and flavorful. Any of the dumplings are a win!

I love the food at this place. My favorite thing on the menu is the shrimp stuffed eggplant with this amazing sauce. I always order extra sauce and then they have these little custard tarts that are to die for and the sesame meatballs are also amazing and the dumplings the other stuff is good, but these are my favorite favorite things. It's a great place to have a late lunch meeting with friends in a back corner and it's just one of my favorite places!

Prompt service with a smile, great recommendations from the menu. Everything was served promptly, hot, fresh, and flavorful. Easy seating with lazy-susan style sharing so everyone gets bites of everything! Smacked some hands trying to take pictures LOL. Still only got 6/12 pictures. Dumplings, yes, all day LOL! So much more to come back and explore. Thank you for the excellent family dinner!

I love me sum dimsum and if you do too, you should check out Shanghai Restaurant! No wait at all on a Sunday afternoon and parking is super chill. Ambiance and decor is lackluster. Expect a self serve experience with the option to dine in. After being seated and given some water, you're pretty much on your own with ordering and paying via phone. Not a bad sitch if you prefer less social interaction, but can be annoying for some. The upside of this is that food came out FAST. We ordered the pork shumai, shrimp rice roll, spicy wontons, sticky rice, shrimp stuffed eggplant, and steamed Chinese broccoli. With tip, this came out to under $70 for two very full individuals. Everything tasted great and hit the spot! I wish they had my favorite dimsum dish (fried taro ball with minced meat) but the variety of items on the menu was pretty good. Will definitely be returning for more, maybe to try out their Peking Duck. Oh and don't forget to grab fortune cookies on your way out!

I recently taken my mom out for some Dimsum for lunch and ordered the following: * pan fried leek dumplings - 1/5 usually I really enjoy this dish from Shanghai but for some reason the dumplings taste way off like the shrimp had spoiled or something. It was not good. Not sure if I will order this again. I never had this experience before with this dish. It's usually leek forward and yummy. It was strange because the shrimp balls did not taste spoiled shrimp. Just this one. *Chinese Cucumber Salad 拌黄瓜- 5/5 super crispy and the flavor is refreshing. It's still crispy and not soggy the next day too! The only con is for some reason this time they made the cucumber salad super oily with the chili oil. * Pork Rib w. Black Bean Sauce- $6.95 豉汁蒸排骨- 1/5 this is usually my go to dish but this pork was smelly and it seems like the the alcohol used didn't burn off or there was a really weird after taste. It was super porky which usually is not like this. Very mild on the fermented black beans flavor. Taro was flavorless and off as well. * Chicken Feet w. Black Bean Sauce-豉汁蒸鳳爪- 5/5 delicious * Fried Shrimp Ball (3)-彩絲- 4/5 tasty but a it came out a bit oily * Shrimp Stuffed Eggplant (3)- 煎釀茄子- 5/5 so good and it was perfect! We loved this dish! It's interesting because last time we were here rhis dish wasn't great but this time is was 5/5! * Beijing (Peking) Slice Skin Duck (Half)北京片皮鸭(半只- 3/5 crispy skin but the duck didn't have any seasoning on it like traditional Peking duck. * Beef Chow Fun 干炒牛河 1/5: the meat was super salty and I do not recommend this dish. The noodles were overly cooked and bland while the meat is overly seasoned. * Pork Shumai (4)-蟹黃燒賣- 5/5 Do I recommend this place? Idk if it was their off day but i would return. We went in a Friday for late lunch around 3pm and we were the only ones there. The restaurant was not full and pretty empty but it's probably because of the time we came. Overall experience most dishes were great but it seems as though their food is inconsistent depending on the cook.

My dim sum cravings and tastebuds were pleasantly satisfied on this Sunday afternoon. The crispy fried noodles shrimp balls were my absolute favorite. These were tender bouncy balls made out of shrimp covered in thick noodles and fried to perfection. The soft, slightly chewy chow fun/ flat noodles with shrimp and bbq pork, were both mouthwatering and gently pleasing my tastebuds. Their steamed dumplings har kao and shumai were definitely better than anywhere else consumed. The orange chicken was classic, sweet & slightly tangy, crispy fried chicken in a well seasoned sweet orange saucy coating, was well-enjoyed. The stuffed eggplant was different, beautifully made. I was eying the good looking spicy wontons, and soup dumplings, but flavorwise these were the least favorite of that visit. Although they have an open kitchen that shows how dumplings were hand made, and plenty of dim sum options were a la carte. I was actually hoping to see rolling carts that serves you table side and you can pick from the cart. But maybe 2 pm. was not prime hour, and a la carte was a better way to serve their customers freshly made. I'm much pleased with the food received. And I am hoping to come back one day to try all other dishes.

Shanghai Restaurant is located in a strip mall at Huntland Drive and Middle Fiskville Road. It's essentially on I-35 South, north of 290 and south of 183. It shares a parking lot with Galaxy Theaters and some other businesses. If you've never been here before, you'll be seated by a friendly staff member, handed some menus, and then you'll be told that you order by the QR code shown on a sign by the table. Currently, the restaurant uses Toast. The catch here is that once you've ordered, you'll pay immediately, including the 15% service fee, in order to get your food. Once that happens though, food comes out hot and fast: we sat down, looked through the menu, decided to order Shrimp Shumai, Shrimp and Cilantro Dumplings, Chicken Feet, Luo Buo Gao, Xiaolongbao, and BBQ Pork Cheng Fun, paid for the order, and ate all the food, and left, all within 30 minutes. The Shrimp Shumai and Shrimp and Cilantro Dumplings were both stuffed to the brim with succulent, snappy, clean shrimp--no mush, filler, or paste, and no shrimp poop. Seasoning was on point; and the dumpling had a great cilantro aroma inside along with the shrimp. The Chicken Feet were savory, with a slight warmth from the peppers. The texture was soft and with slightly gelatinous fall apart texture, and it was extremely easy to eat and separate the tendon and flesh from the bones. The Radish Cakes were also quite good in terms of flavor. These ones had larger chunks of radish within, they were savory, and they did not require any extra sauce (nor was any sauce provided). They were not mushy from excessive rice flour. Very munchable and easy to scarf down. I would advise against the Soup Dumplings here. First, the soup within with very thin, not rich. Second, they come steamed in these metallic foil tins. No soups are provided, so they are difficult to eat. I ended up using the tin as a spoon, but they deform in shape; you are liable to spill soup no matter how hard you try. Much better soup dumplings can be found elsewhere. Special Noodle is an example which comes to mind. Finally, the BBQ Pork Cheung Fun (Rice Noodle Roll) was pretty atrocious. The roll stacked on top (with less sauce) had an unpleasant tasting metallic herbal taste. It was unclear where this was from the pork or the rice noodles. The BBQ pork itself was quite bland. Only when consuming the rolls on the lower portion (the ones swimming in sauce) did the taste become more acceptable. Of course at that point you are just tasting the sauce, which hides the unpleasant underlying flavor. Overall, Shanghai Restaurant has some pretty good dishes, e.g. shrimp based, but there are certain ones on their menu that can be improved significantly. Expect to prepay for your meal. In essence, this is like a food court or hawker stall, except it's just a single restaurant with AC and plenty of seating. Don't expect much interaction with staff.

A pretty solid dim sum restaurant. I liked the variety and price wise, it was pretty decent. My personal favorites that I always get are the Black Bean Ribs, Har Gow (Shrimp Dumplings), Shu Mai, and Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls. This place also does a really good Salt & Pepper Tofu. They managed to keep the inside soft, but the outside has a nice crisp. Will keep this in mind whenever we're back in town.

    Improved atmosphere. Great vibes!

Shanghai Chinese Restaurant has been a favorite of mine for years. When I lived nearby, it was my go-to spot and it was always good. Recently, I went back with my parents, and I'm happy to say it's better than ever. We ordered the sesame chicken along with some dim sum, and everything was incredible. The chicken was clearly real, fresh, high-quality chicken--crispy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The dim sum was just as impressive, and now I'm genuinely torn every time I go between ordering dim sum or that sesame chicken because both are that good. They've also added some new menu items that are absolutely worth trying. After trying the pineapple bbq puff, I went back the next day hoping to have it again, but it was sold out--which honestly just tells you how popular and good it must be. The atmosphere has noticeably improved recently too; it feels warmer, more welcoming, and just an even better place to be. Even though I live farther away now, this is still my go-to takeout spot. I'll happily make the drive. I visited with my parents after seeing an email about Mr. He's 10-year anniversary--what an incredible milestone. The work he does truly shows in the food, the consistency, and the care put into the restaurant. I hope more people get the chance to experience how special this place is. Shanghai Chinese Restaurant continues to set the bar high, and I can't recommend it enough.

    What we ordered.

I was hoping the Yelp reviews were because people don't appreciate authentic dim sum. I have had my fair share and this was not a place I would return to. Nothing was exceptional enough to have more than one piece but the pork ribs and the beef ribs were just plain bad. All bone and on the pork it was all chewy fat. No meat. On the beef it was just not tasty and it was chewy. I am quite disappointed. Attached is a photo of what we ordered to go. We ate 2 mins away so that didn't affect the integrity of the food. Yelp 2 stars = I've had better. I can't give this meal more stars.

My husband is a big fan of dim sum and I had to plan to get some for him this weekend for his birthday. Shanghai serves dim sum all day -- at least on a Saturday. The restaurant is quite large and spacious. As others have said - service is non existent and they automatically charge 15% service. You order via the QR code and someone brings the food out. Apart from that, there is no human interaction. I was surprised that they did have a handful of vegetarian items on the menu. But we mainly went for the shumai and har gow.

Scan QR code to order and pay thru your phone. Food is usually pretty fast and piping hot. Food is not highest quality but will satisfy your dim sum cravings. Great for family style sharing so you can get a little of everything.

Was a bit concerned that I was the only one here at 5:45. Granted a second party came in shortly after but empty on a Thursday night. A bit sterile - from the plastic tablecloths to the ordering. Ordered shrimp dim sum. It was good but not quite great. Then on to the soup dumplings. Disappointing. I've had them a few places in Dallas and New Jersey so I do know how good they can be...these fell short. Bathroom with hole in ceiling not great. Looks like the place needs some TLC

Have expectations returned to pre Covid dim sum service, taste, etc?

food is better than before covid. However, all ordering is done at the table using phone so no carts. That may be why food tastes so freshly prepared when it arrives.

Will you be open on July 4th?

    Yes.

Are you back serving dim sum on carts?

    They never left.

Do they have dim sum during the weekdays?

    Call and ask.

Do they serve dim sum on carts? If so, on what days and times do they do the carts?

Currently they are not doing rolling carts but dim sum is still available.

Do they serve dim sum all day?

    Yes

These guys are listed on Seamless but don't honor the orders. It's weird you get a confirmation and everything. Anyone know which apps work?

When you arrive, everybody is so nice you give them your name and they get you seated right away. I ordered a drink called a signature tingling Daisy and it was so good. I definitely could've had so many but I was driving so you gotta pace yourself. We started off with the soup dumplings, which are just phenomenal. It's a must when you go. Also, for appetizers, we got the spicy cucumbers which were divine and a hot and sour soup, which was perfectly balanced and not watery. We also got a beef fried rice and let me tell you that rice is so soft and delicious. You literally dream about it the next day. I also got the pecking duck which is delicious there the skin is nice and crispy and the meat on it taste so good. We also got the Kung pow shrimp with cashews, which was delicious and the pieces of shrimp were gigantic. We also got the green beans which is were delicious. I love ordering green beans when they're cooked just like the ones I posted in the photo. Then for dessert, we got the chocolate mousse which is that little dog cake. I know it's so cute and they made it a little hard to eat because you feel bad in a weird sense. It was delicious now I will say when cutting it and realizing the inside had a raspberry filling, made it a little more crazy cause it looked like blood, but it was still so good. This place is definitely an awesome staple and a must visit when you're in town or just always go and have food there whether it's date night or friends catching up or anything in general even on your own.

This could have been my mistake but I don't remember any choice in the matter. The greeter wasn't very friendly and borderline surly when I asked for more details about how to not book the bar in the future. Didn't get any explanation but fortunately, we won't have to worry about that... The food was just awful. We ordered 3-4 types of dimsum (onion pancake, soup dumplings, chu shou, fried shu mae) and three entries (orange beef, eggplant and their take on ma pao tofu) for the best tasting experience. The curry sauce for the onion pancake was probably the most flavorful dish of the night sadly. The onion pancake was way way over fried-- hard as a rock. If that's their take on onion pancake... well, it's just wrong. The soup dumplings were passable but a bit doughie and the filling was full of a lot of noticeable coagulated fat -- not clear and broth-y, with light surface droplets of oil as all delicious broths. My wife enjoyed the chu shou -- I found the filling much too overcooked and tough -- difficult to eat with chop sticks. Like a tough, overcooked meatball. The fried shu Mae were just plain inedible. My wife and I each ate one and left the rest. The included sauce was basic and too heavy. And again, over fried. There was a huge delay between our apps and our mains, like 40 minutes or so. Various bar staff apologized. It wasn't a big deal, we were in a good conversation and they were super busy but our mains were not at all worth waiting for. Small portions. WAY over sauced. WAY too salty. WAY too sweet. No distinct flavors at all. The ma pao didn't seem to have any Szechuan pepper at all. How do you miss that ? The plating of the eggplant dish was really creative but I don't eat with my eyes and it came with no instruction -- my first bite was just flavorless steamed eggplant cube -- second was mixed with one note sauce. One of the better mains IMO but it was still gloopy and pretty gross. Wife did not enjoy it. The orange beef was essentially just six or seven cubes of tough, fatty beef covered in over-the-top bitter orange peel. We each had a cube and left the rest. Honestly, give me Panda Express any day over this abject failure of a restaurant. Austin needs more Chinese but if it's anything like this place, forget it. I'd rather spend a 4h round trip to Houston and go to even a mediocre Chinese restaurant than endure another meal at this place. What a waste of $165. Edit: I wish I was making this up but I literally had to pull over to throw up on the side of the road on the way home. The food did not sit well with me. I have no underlying health conditions, am not on any medicine that would have this as a side effect and only shared one beer with my wife. It was just a very, very, disappointing and gross meal.

Wu Chow hits the spot on manny levels. The patio is inviting and the interior is decorated nicely as well. The food reminds me of home cooking meets a new hotspot in atx! The staff does a great job of checking in on tables and making great recommendations for coursing plates for a group (including portions bc in Texas you never know!). I really liked their dumpling and the rest of the meal was tasty as well.

We let them know we all had tickets to the opera at 7:30 so it was our goal to be wrapping up by 6:45. By 6:35, my plate was still bare. By the time my food arrived, I had to just shovel it in and go to the opera with indigestion. My friend sitting beside me fared even worse. His food didn't arrive until we were all paying our bills and getting ready to depart so he just had to get his to go. There were nice aspects of the meal too. My food was hot and tasty, my Welcome To The Jungle drink was epic, and our server was pretty attentive. However, the timing of food coming out just made the experience a catastrophe for my friend and me and I hope to not return.

After landing in San Antonio yesterday to kick off my summer vacation, the very first thing I did…read moretoday was ask my friend to bring me back to this restaurant. The reason is simple: we ate here two years ago, and it left such a great impression on us that we had been looking forward to coming back ever since. Fortunately, not much has changed in terms of either the quality or the overall presentation of the food. Everything is still delicious, especially the Pho Combo. To be honest, it's far better than most of the pho we've had in Germany. That doesn't mean the pho in Germany is bad--it simply means this place matches my personal taste much better. As for the downsides, they're almost exactly the same as before. Parking is still a major challenge, and I understand that's probably not something the restaurant can easily fix. We also tried calling ahead to reserve a table, but they don't take reservations, whether you're coming with a group of 5-7 people or just 2-3 people. We arrived at 6:45 PM and still had to wait about 40 minutes before being seated, which was honestly quite inconvenient. Coincidentally, there was live music tonight, which was a nice surprise. Unfortunately, the sound system wasn't very good, so it was difficult to hear what the singers were performing. Then again, this isn't really the type of venue where people come specifically to enjoy live music, so most diners didn't seem to pay much attention to it. One thing I did notice was that either the kitchen has made a few changes over the past two years, or perhaps my own taste has changed a little. The food felt slightly saltier than I remembered, and the pho broth was richer and creamier. While that added some depth of flavor, it was a bit too rich for my liking, to the point where finishing the entire bowl of broth felt a little overwhelming. The braised short ribs were incredibly tender--so tender that a knife was almost unnecessary, and they could easily be pulled apart with just a fork. While many people would probably see that as a positive, I actually missed the slightly firmer, meatier texture I remembered from my last visit. That said, these are relatively minor issues. The quality may have dipped just a little compared to our previous visit, but this is still an excellent restaurant. If they can fine-tune those small details, it would easily return to being one of my favorite places. There's a good chance we'll stop by one more time before heading back to Germany.

Is it that time of year for another 1618 update? Absolutely…read more After my umpteenth visit, I think it's safe to say I've worked my way through almost the entire menu (minus a few noodle, chicken & vegetarian dishes). My 2025 review still stands, but after so many visits, I've noticed a few items haven't been good as they used to, particularly the chicken wings (and yes, all three of them). The Garlic Wings haven't been hitting quite the same. They've started to taste a little dry, and the saucier wings taste better the next day since they don't have time to steep through once served. The Filet Mignon Pepper Steak is still my favorite dish on the menu, but I still can't justify ordering it family-style anymore. It's delicious, but the portion just doesn't match the price. One of the newest additions--the Truffle Fried Rice is spectacular. It's light, not overpowering with truffle, and the fish eggs really adds the perfect little pop of texture/flavor. I don't think I breathed the entire time I scarfed it down!! 1618 is still one of my favorite restaurants in Austin of all time, but I think it's time for the menu to elevate a bit and dive deeper into less mainstream Asian cuisine. If anyone can do it, 1618 can.

I've heard so many great things about this restaurant, and we finally made it there over Memorial Day weekend. It absolutely lived up to the hype. This place is truly impressive. You can tell every detail was thoughtfully designed and intentional, from the stunning interior design and décor to the incredibly creative menu. What I loved most was how the dishes stayed rooted in authentic Chinese flavors while adding creative, and sometimes surprising, twists. Everything we ordered was excellent. The Lobster Cheese Puff was a huge hit: crispy on the outside and packed with flavor inside. The Salmon Sashimi Mango Salad was incredibly fresh, bright, and crunchy. The sautéed pea shoots were so tender and fresh. And the Lamb Chop with Spicy Miso Sauce was absolutely unforgettable. One of the biggest surprises for me was the Veggie Fried Rice. As a native Chinese, I've had countless fried rice dishes over the years, but I've honestly never had one prepared quite like this before. It was so flavorful and unique. For dessert, the Chocolate Soup Dumpling was both creative and delicious, and the bunny-shaped sorbet was almost too cute to eat. Our waiter, Jake, was also incredibly attentive and helpful throughout the evening. He made our first experience there even more special. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for high-quality Chinese cuisine paired with a beautiful ambiance and elevated dining experience. Perfect for celebrations or a special night out in Austin!
