Great food! Think this is the last traditional Dim Sum location in Austin. The food is amazing, fresh, and made when you order. I'm a huge Dim Sum fan, having had it in many locations throughout the US. This place definitely does not disappoint. I really can't overemphasize how important it is to support small businesses, and Shanghai Restaurant is a family-owned business that deserves all of your support. I have been coming here for years to enjoy Dim Sum, which is by far the best offering in Austin. It's important to keep family traditions alive and in my family we get Chinese food on Christmas. We called around 4:30 to confirm that we did not need a reservation as we were only a party of two. They said nope, come on over. We got there around 5 and there was no one at any of the 3 front desk stations so we just kind of milled around until someone saw us, not more than 5 minutes. We were seated by staff with glasses of water and there was a small sign holder with a QR code for ordering through Toast. It was simple to use. After ordering, we waited for about 10 minutes for them to bring out our cans of Coke Zero. I love that they offer Coke Zero, but I expected a glass of ice to be brought with it, not just flexi-straws. This is a sit down establishment that must have been some sort of steakhouse or hibachi grill (honestly, the mix of interior finishes in this place is interesting- lovely wood slanting beam ceilings in the entrance area and where we were seated, but there was a larger dining area with extremely high ceilings, bright lighting, and white painted ornate ceiling tiles.) The tables do have white table cloths, but they were plastic. Not a big deal, just thought it was a sort of place for glasses, especially since it was a holiday. We ordered the pork bbq steamed buns, the pork bbq baked buns, the pork shumai, and the har gow. I also ordered a bowl of egg drop soup. The bbq steam buns, har gow, and shumai all came out together- steaming and smelling wonderful. I will say that the har gow all stuck together and was difficult to pull apart- not really the restaurant's fault as they are chewy buns- just letting anyone out there who is not great with chopsticks to use a fork or be prepared to fight these particular buns apart. The bbq steam buns were a little dry, but overall good. I really enjoyed the pork shumai- it was flavorful and juicy but not too wet, and reasonably priced. They brought the bbq baked buns out about 10 minutes after the rest of our food. This was expected as they tell you on the menu that this particular roll will take longer as it is baked. These were also good, but I would not order if it was just me as whatever is baked on top of them is sweet, but the fillings were moist and had good flavor. Overall, I feel like the dim sum here is solid, good quality, and well priced for what you get. It's not the most amazing dim sum I've ever had, but far from the worst. My spouse really enjoyed everything and said he'd give this five stars but he's also less picky than I am and has only ever had dim sum once before. Now, to my real issue. THEY PUT CORN KERNELS IN THE EGG DROP SOUP. Their egg drop soup was really flavorful. However, the Toast menu doesn't have descriptions or ingredients in the app so I didn't know it would have corn in it. It had lots of chicken, was deliciously aromatic, and was a rich golden color. If they took the corn out, I'd probably come get this soup for lunch at least once a week. Also, it came out of the kitchen super hot and it didn't cool down enough to not scald my mouth on it while we were at the restaurant, but I was able to take it to go. The corn in the soup is literally the reason this is a 4 star review. So overall, this place is good, reasonably priced, has plenty of parking and seating, and the staff is very nice though your interaction with them is limited. I kind of miss the thrill of dim sum carts racing around tables, but QR code ordering is fine if they would add information to the menu/ordering app. We'll be back, but could be coaxed to better dim sum pastures. read more

The food was substandard and the service was poor but the worst part was the waitress trying to steal our money with the owners help. I gave the waitress $100 bill to pay for $52 check. Waitress then DOES NOT RETURN to our table for 30 minutes, she just GONE. I walk to the kitchen door and ask where my change is and they tell me " no change" and suddenly NOBODY speaks English anymore. I'm NOT leaving a 50% tip to a server who dropped off my food and never returned to my table. This is the first dimsum I've tried in Austin. Got there right at opening and there were people but was seated right away. Not too crowded, no reservation needed. Imagine a world where all the Dim Sum Places are closed for all Asian Mothers on Mother's Day. A world where no mother or individual can haves decent dim sum experience. Well my readers, we were in that world for a while due to a pandemic , but I know the world has become a better place when I went to this restaurant. The price is a little more expensive than prior COVID but this is expected. The Good: The Service is phenomenal! I usually get spare ribs with black bean sauce to go here and it had been a while since I've been back. The hostess helped me to my car, the owner was very sweet over the phone, and everyone was so accommodating. I called in advance and they even told me wait times and that it may take longer to sit due to social distancing. They gave me the option to go which I took. I used their website. Easy to use. It was Mother's Day and I can't list every food I took home. But I do want to compliment the restaurant on how they wrapped the dim sum, as it kept it fresh longer. The soup dumplings are seriously some of the best I have ever had, without exaggeration. We also had an order of the pan fried leek dumplings and those were also wonderful. I hate leaving negative reviews but... Shanghai used to be a solid four but now I'm having a hard time justifying even the two stars. TLDR; $150 for three people to eat mediocre dim sum. Someone help open something new in Austin, please! RIP New Fortune Things are weird "post Covid," aren't they? Service is non-existant, food quality is meh. Food ordering through toast isn't great. If I wanted to get takeout, I would have gotten take out. First, Food Quality: Almost everything was not as hot as it should have been. One item was actually cold. The only thing that came out hot-hot was the deep fried shrimp balls. Everything tasted okay but items not coming out hot (steamer baskets, hello!) poured cold water on pretty much everything. Prices -- Everything was crazy expensive. Saying that "everything has gone up in price" doesn't justify what they're charging for Dim Sum plates. I could believe the prices if they were on the gourmet side of things in Houston with a class c celebrity chef, but they're not. Also a 15% tip is mandated and then an additional 15% is suggested. There is literally no service past food being plunked down and don't try to get anyone's attention to ask for waters or something that's off menu (like napkins) Food quantity: (maybe see prices) $6 for two sesame balls? $13 for 4 chicken gyoza? $13 for any of the pan fried items? Someone at another table speculated loudly that because they don't have staff anymore, they price anything that takes more effort than putting frozen/cold items in a steamer basket at a 100% premium. There is now a new management, and the food is beyond great!!! The dim sum is spectacular - each dish served straight and hot from the kitchen. The service is personal and so friendly! The chef himself came to our table and discussed the different dishes! One member of our party has a medical food restriction, and they accommodated her completely with no loss of flavor whatsoever (that takes an especially good chef)! Dim sum has been an annual Christmas and occasional birthday tradition for my family for the 17 years we have lived in Austin and Shanghai is our current go to place. We;d been to Shanghai during a few of the early years of our tradition when I worked nearby but we'd stopped coming in favor of a location closer to our home. We rediscovered Shanghai last summer when the dim sum restaurant closer to our home closed down. On our visit in the summer of 2023 we were a bit sad to find they no longer brought carts around during dim sum, we'd hoped they might bring them back for Christmas but both times ordering was all done through an app. As we had a large group both times and they prefer orders all be placed by one person, it made coordinating things a bit more complicated but we worked with it and were delighted to get everything we wanted all served fresh and hot and timely. The one downside was that we didn't remember everything we ordered or recognize what was what and when we asked back in June if they could tell us what was in each dumpling we were told no, lol. We sorted it out but as we had a mix of ominvores and vegetarians it was a bit annoying. When we went for Christmas this year we were at least prepared and paid closer attention to what the things we ordered looked like so we didn't have to depend on the staff to help. The restaurant is clean and large and open. They don't take reservations for dim sum on the weekends but when we went in June we had no problem getting a nice large table without a wait. We lucked out that Christmas was on a weekday and their website allowed for reservations although they weren't as busy as expected when we went bright and early at 10 am so we'd have been gotten a table easily even without it. Although I do wish they would bring the carts back, this is likely to remain our go to dim sum place and we have been very pleased with the food and service. read more

Some of the best combo fried rice I've ever had - soooo much flavor and sooo much meat! We almost can't go anywhere else for fried rice, luckily this is in the neighborhood. Came here on a Sunday for dim sum at around 2pm, so the lunch rush is towards the tail end. 3 or 4 groups were in front of us and it took about 20 minutes to get seated. Once seated, the menu and ordering is all done via the QR code online website, which is really convenient, but not sure how you could ask questions about menu items if it's your first time getting dim sum. The food came relatively quickly. We ordered 8 itms for 3 people, which was almost just the sweet spot (we felt a little stuffed at the end, I probably could've done 7 items and be super on point in terms of portions). We ordered - Century egg porridge (a Cantonese classic, I cannot do dim sum w/o trying the porridge! I know I can't complain as this is one of the couple of Dim sum places left in the area and because of Covid, the experience will be different. There isn't really any interaction with the servers at all because you order from your phone. They just bring you what you order and no one really came by and ask if we needed anything, you need to wave them down yourself. Dim sum is not bad but the Cheung Fun was rather disappointing. The rice noodle didn't have the right texture as it seems a bit mush to me. The Shrimp Cheung Fun, the shrimp had no seasoning whatsoever and a bit over cooked. I enjoyed the Pork and Shrimp Shumai and the spareribs. It is pricier, almost $7 per Dim Sum dish, we ordered 5 and the total with tip was almost $60, so yes it will be pricey to eat decent Dim Sum. After eating here I was surprised to see how low the overall rating was for this restaurant. The Dim Sum is pretty solid and about what I'd expect. It's served at all times as well which is a huge plus! All of the dishes came out fairly quickly and were packed and wrapped well- from the Shumai to the Lotus leaf with sticky rice. My only complaint is the portion size, I wish there was more for what you were paying. I doubt we'll be coming back. From the way you order and get your food, it's a totally different experience. You scan a QR code and select your dishes and immediately pay. Don't get me wrong. It's just personal preference. Their food is okay, it's just not the cart experience that we grew up with and have become so accustomed to. ample parking. not busy at 6:45, but sign says to sign in and they will call your name only three times once your table is ready, so it must get very busy. staff is very welcoming and extremely friendly---I see others have had a differwnt experience but Mr. Ho was friendly and the young lady who helped me was charming. An open window in to kitchen show team prepping and cooking, looks clean, and staff are friendly with each other. Dining room experience feels a little like assisted living decor. Mint green walls, tables covered in disposable plastic table clothes, jazzy muzak being piped in. Prices seem a little on the high side. but I can see all dim sum is made by hand, so I'm okay with that. 15% service charge added to all orders -- eat in or take out. I was a little taken aback to get that much charged on take out, to be honest. I'm hoping that means staff get a living wage and share in the tips. Last kookie thing.
