Unbelievable! I'm a senior and I phoned and asked if I could receive the senior discount refund on a change of car from a dealership. They said yes, just bring in the receipt to get the 25% discount which is $5. I came in with my licence, receipt insurance and stood in line. A woman came through the line (Elaine) and asked everybody what they wanted and when she came, I told her and she said ok just show the person at the till everything: receipts, drivers, license, insurance. And I waited in line some more and came to a person at the till and she said she wanted to double check if they would be able to give me the $5 seniors discount. I man came out and he said that I would have to go all the way to Cochrane 56 km one way -112 km total,(where the dealership was) since they would be out $5 and Cochrane deals with their own registry. They didn't want to be out the $5, (even though I explained again I called first and also that the woman who talked to the lineup said just show them all the paperwork at the till). The man left and said he would look for the woman (Elaine). I suspect he wanted to give her a heads up that they weren't going to give me the $5 seniors discount, so that when I saw her she was prepared. Then when I saw her she changed her story - denied what she said earlier and changed it to 'I told you they would decide at the till'. All this to save the inconvenience of giving me the discount (after I was told I would get it). This is beyond believable, that for $5 which I was entitled to they would treat a senior this way. I'm going to go to another registry close by (with higher customer service ratings) and I bet anything they will give me the $5 discount. read more

This is the worst place to get your service done. Do not take your driving test here as they set you up to fail. They are scammers, and they will fail your driving test intentionally by misleading, and confusing you with the direction. They should have instructotors who can speak english fluently. It is hard to follow their instructions when you are trying to understand what their saying. They should not be dealing with public service with the way they treat their costumers, unprofessional, rude and arrogant. This place should be screening their employees thoroughly before they hire them. Driving test? don't even think about taking it at this place. They are out to get your money, you will go crazy trying to understand what they are saying and their instructions will confuse the hell out of you while you're driving, then they make you feel like it's your fault for not able understand them. Please!!! I cannot follow your driving instructions if I cannot understand a word your saying, and it is not my fault!!! Show some compassion and remorse, educate your employees on how to treat their costumers. The arrogance and attitude is absolutely unbelievable. They don't smile, no please and thank you and they talk to you like you are some kind of dirt, they don't ask nicely, they demand. They feel superior over you by the way they act and talk to you. They are many people out there whom are much deserving of their job. I'm sorry, but you really need to consider re-evaluating your employees. If they lack the ability to communicate properly, then the least they can do is be kind and be apologetic for their shortcomings, your costumers will be more forgiving and understanding if they acknowledge their mistakes. Terrible, terrible customer service. Very rude and unprofessional older lady that works here discriminated against me to my face before making an error on the document she submitted. I had to wait months because of her mistake and then go to another registry to complete the job she didn't do. Disrespectful staff who can't even do their jobs properly. I normally use Southland Registrations on Horton Road but decided to give Shawnessy a try because it is closer to my new home. Context is always important in evaluating customer service. If I had just walked out of a fish cannery, I would expect a little bit of hostility on the part of people around me, no matter how professional the service. I always keep context in mind when evaluating the service I received - time of day, how busy the establishment is, what the mood of the place appears to be, etc. I walked into Shawnessy Licence & Registrations at 9:00a.m. on a Tuesday morning; first one in the door in fact. Perhaps they were not happy that I had interrupted their start up routine. I guess they didn't have to open the door. Perhaps the girl was later arriving for work than she liked. I have no idea. (The weather was fine out, for what it is worth). I do know that I was treated with a strange cool detachment. Never heard the word please or thank you, not once. More annoyingly, I was told - after attempting to use my mastercard in the debit machine - that they don't take credit cards. Their debit machine also doesn't accept chips, just swipes. It also tells you - after the girl stamps all your paper work for a licence renewal - that you are being charged extra for using your debit card. No mention up front of this fact. I didn't bother to ask if personal cheque was an option. I suppose it would sound old-fashioned to mention the nose-ring on the girl at the counter, but it seemed to sum-up the unprofessional atmosphere that pervaded my interactions with the staff. I will be going back to Southland Registrations in future, where the staff is much more courteous, and actually talking to the person at the counter isn't such a chore for them. read more

This is the most money hungry registry out there. They insisted on charging me multiple two separate $20+ fees for changing my address, one for my license and one for my registration. They then insisted on me paying a THIRD registry fee to pay an outstanding ticket. Every registry I've gone to in the past would only charge one fee. To make it worse, they wouldn't allow me to circumvent the fee by renewing my registration for another year, they said they would add still charge the fees on top of the $93 registration cost. I won't be back here, and I'll be reporting this registry to Alberta Transportation as their fees are illegal and unjust. read more

Worst registry in Calgary in accomplishing all services specially doing road tests. The instructors in this office just want you to redo road test as they are getting 85% of the fees which they know it's high and good revenue for them. They failed me in a road test three times and every time they come up with a different excuse just to get me redo the same test. If you are looking to do even small services just do not go there. Most people in the office specially the manager are mean and won't see even a smile on their faces. They are confused and they don't know what they are doing. Took my Class 4 road test today with a woman named Michelle. I have been driving for over 30 accident free years and have logged over 1 million kilometers. According to this woman I failed. In her opinion I didn't shoulder check or missed signaling. Neither of which I did, my road test was perfect. I waited about 20 minutes to renew my license and during that time I witnessed many interactions that staff had with customers. I noticed a distinct difference when the staff spoke with newer Canadians - they were often condescending and rude. Next time I will drive further for better service. read more

Shawnessy Registry is advertising free license replacement for Fort McMurray Fire Victims. THIS IS A FALSE ADVERTISEMENT. My mom have resided in Fort McMurray for the last 12 years working shift work with a Calgary address. She evacuated Tuesday night with just the clothes on her back. She was denied by the manager for the free license replacement when she even showed her Tax Forms (Alberta Northern Allowance) to prove that she's a resident of Fort McMurray. The manager was quite condescending telling her that it is illegal to claim Fort McMurray as a residence with a Calgary address - PURE IGNORANCE. Majority of people who has shift work/work on-site who resides in Fort McMurray holds addresses from throughout Canada. My mom ended up going to AMA and they issued her a FREE license replacement without any grief. read more

I took my son to write the learner's license exam. I was charged fifty cents to use my debit card to pay. He passed the exam so I had to pay another fifty cents for the license itself. There is signage saying they do not take credit cards. A busy location raking in fifty cents every time someone uses their debit card with no options other than cash. Obviously the owner of this business is trying to be a rebel of some kind by this type of action. Before I hear "I do this because of the fees the banks/credit card companies charge" please don't waste your breath. This is a money grab and makes you, the owner and decision-maker look like a cheapskate. Also, there is an air of indifference in this place that is not attractive. I was impressed with how quickly I got my plates after waiting in line behind 8 others for only 20 minutes I was out the door after only 10 minutes at the counter! And I needed a statuary declaration done...was shocked there wasn't a charge for that service.....totally impressed : ) read more

For a road test, I recommend booking on Tuesdays. The Tuesday guy may look gruff but he's a sweet guy, very kind and empathetic.

Came to do an easy transfer of plates for a new vehicle and had nothing but brutal service. The employees were lazy and only provided excuses as to why they couldn't transfer the registration - even though a bill of sale, valid insurance and a DL were provided. Isn't this your job? We drove 10 minutes to the southland location just to avoid dealing with the staff at Shawnessy and it was totally worth it - customer service was NIGHT AND DAY! read more

I failed my Class 5GDL in Southland registration LTD. Shawnessy Registry was the worst registry in my life so that is why I choose Southland but it is opposite now. As soon as I went to Southland the people asked ''I need your car insurance and registration'' never used please, and my examiner was Michele and she failed me for passing a police officer parked in the oncoming lane for me going 47 in a 50 zone. I am not giving 5 stars to Shawnessy because i passed. I am giving it because the examiner was really fair. Also the staff in Shawnessy is changed and as soon as I walked in everyone had smile on there face not like a year ago. For road test just worry the most on your speed, Up hill, and parallel which do makes sense because after driving you need to park the car somewhere. Well good luck. read more

I failed my road test there and cried for 1 hour afterwards not because I failed [cos I made a mistake by doing 35 km in a 30km school zone area] so I am not faulting my failure but rather the attitude of the road test guy..a guy called Gordon or so with a slight limp. He was very mean, treated me as though I was wasting his time, was very abrupt and mean and I kept on wondering why he had to be so mean. there were instances where he brushed me off while I was explaining or sighed with impatience..so he was also unprofessional. I've used Shawnessy Licence & Registry many times over the years, foolishly, due to its proximity to where I live. Rude, imprompt, disservice is always the norm. My paperwork is always in order yet their obviously undereducated staff always finds a way to complicate things without offering any alternative means of coming to a solution, approximate time-frame, or any other type of useful means of resolving a situation. The staff dress and act like high school students. Means of payment are limited (they do not accept credit card, which I assume is the business cheaping out on credit card fees) and they tack on a service charge for paying by debit card. Why support an establishment that will do nothing for you? I will take my business elsewhere.... even if the service isn't better, at least I can get some points on my Visa. This trashy establishment needs to clean up its act. read more

I called Alberta Satisics before I came to alberta advised them I lived in New Brunswick but was born in Alberta and wanted to change my last name. I was told it would not be a problem as long as I got finger printing done. I then called the Shawnessy registry office to verify before getting the finger printing done advised them that I lived in New Brunswick all the same information was exchanged just make sure you get the finger printing done. I went to get the finger printing done went to the registry and was told I couldn't do it. Why? I asked because you don't live in Alberta, I could be from anywhere in the world China, anywhere overseas and be living in Alberta and have it done but because I don't physically live in the province I was born in and lived in for 23 years I can't get it done? After doing everything I was told that's the answer I get because I don't like every in Alberta after every person I spoke to I told I did not live here. I still live in Canada a born Calgary Alberta Canadian! But the answer I get boggles me the most you can be from any country in the world and live in Alberta and have it done. After all that I ask to get a birth certificate for my daughter as she was born in Calgary Alberta Canada and I can't get that to my address in New Brunswick either. So why can't I even get a birth certificate for my child unless going online and paying double the price when and I needed it to register her I school so now she won't be registered for school on time? read more

The worst ever. We went to this registry office yesterday at around 4pm to apply for Alberta Health card for my sister who is 72 years old. We brought the documents of her permanent resident status including passport and gave to the lady (seems in authority). Not even checking and reading the documents, she asked an envelope with address on it to prove that she is living in Alberta. Luckily, the envelope where we put all my sister's documents has an address and name because of the previous notice sent by the Canadian embassy which was delivered by DHL. She declined to process our request, because she need an envelope with date or bank statement or utilities under her name. I told her that she has no account and no need to open an account, because she doesn't have any plan to work as she is a dependent of her daughter. The lady ( which I think the manager) said that she still need to open an account for her pension (huh! are you serious? She has no idea of what she is talking about). We just left, and since we live in Evergreen and close to this office, we decided to get the envelope used by DHL with name, address and date on it. We went back to the Registry at around 4:45pm (closing time is 5pm). Unfortunately, the lady who assisted us earlier was already off. We approached the young lady (with ring on her tongue), and she gave us an application form. But the man working beside her, told us that the envelope they need should include the contents with address and date. Both of them, did'nt even bother to read the envelope etc.... I know, we brought all the requirements needed. Maybe, they don't want to process our request because it's almost 5pm. These 2 persons are working on the left counters.Even we explained everything. but to no avail. From now on, I will no longer patronize this branch. I would rather go to Southland Registry as they are more competent and efficient. I will tell to all friends this bad experience to warn them. The owner of the Shawnessy registry should observe and listen to the reviews of the customers to improve their service. read more

My first attempt at writing my learners, no not saying I failed, but I didn't even get a chance to write, cause I didn't have my passport!! Ok this test is really golden, and no learners don't have the ability to drive to the states border, don't worry alberta government. Anyway, this place was packed at 11:30 on a Monday morning. They should really consider rearranging the lineup and adding some more seats. There's only one small bench for a hundred people. also, they should really post the learner's ID requirements by the door ,or have it available on their website, if I had seen that I didn't have The required ID, I would not waste 30 min in a crowded lineup on a hot day only to accomplish nothing. I took, and passed the test, and southland registries the following day and spent only 40 min from beginning to end, with seating space.And I only went to this place cause I live in evergreen. read more
