Oh, my god! I haven't been this excited for a long time. This place is legit! If you want to try some authentic mainland China snack/light meal/soup, you need to come here. Don't be deterred by its hole in the wall look--after all, you're eating the food not the building/decor, right? Their wonton soup is divine! It's not the type of wonton soup you have at any dim sum place; this is authentic Fuzhou wonton. Their braised meat combo is a must try too, if you want to have some authentic braised meat. To be exact, it's not the American braised meat items--they are duck feet, chicken feet, duck wings, pork intestines and etc. But absolutely delicious!

Finally a good and cheap Chinese food chain in Philly! I highly recommend the wonton soup, peanut sauce noodles, and dumplings. All 3 are very authentic. The Wonton soup has the thinnest skin you'll find in Philly, for only $2.50! The peanut sauce noodles are also only $2.50 and taste very good with the vinegar, however, it would've been even better if it was black instead of white/rice vinegar. The dumplings are very fresh and they only cost $5. I would skip the meat soup as it was literally just a bowl of meat in the wonton soup. Only reason this place gets 4 stars is the fact that they only use plastic plates/bowls/utensils and cash only.

Going to keep this review very honest and constructive because I really ultimately want to help this new business thrive with a couple key steps. First of all, there's quite a disparity between the decor, and the general experience. Based on the inside renovation and decoration it feels like it should be a restaurant as opposed to a quick, cheap-eats, on the go sort of place. But then when they actually serve you everything comes on paper plates and in plastic bowls and the disparity between expectation and reality is a little strange. I'd recommend changing to use real bowls, plates, and utensils as opposed to disposables. I think right now the spot is struggling a little to find the vibe it's going for. As for the food, it's fine, nothing ground breaking. The dumplings were pretty good but I really didn't enjoy the fuding meat slices. It's supposed to be a cross between meat and flour but in attempting to be both I think it's kind of neither in a strange way. Could use a lot more flavor and seasoning. Overall, very mediocre experience but it is new so I hope the business takes the right steps to find its place in the bustling chinatown neighborhood.

The merienda store is close to Friendship Arch and located at Chinatown Main Street. There are two spaces, one for taking out, one for dining in. I ordered a Beijing meat sauce noodle. It's good. The price is reasonable. The other dinner time, I also ordered a noodle. This one is made of rice, so called rice noodle. I love it. The taste is great. Highly recommended!

I got dinner here recently after not coming for a while and was reminded just how good it is. Really delicious, authentic, and affordable Northern Chinese food - my mom is from that region and always asks to come here whenever she visits. The noodle portions are huge and expertly hand-crafted and cooked for the perfect bouncy chewy texture. The dumplings are also lowkey the best in Chinatown, with a thicker chewy skin characteristic of Northern-style dumplings, a juicy filling bursting with flavor, and a perfect sweet soy sauce dip on the side. Service is quick and friendly, with the servers able to accommodate both Chinese and English speakers and happy to give recommendations. And you can tell from the clientele that this place is a hit with both Chinese and non-Chinese diners alike. It was packed on a Friday night! It's BYO too so you can even imbibe in some drinks with dinner without breaking the bank. FYI that they only accept cash and Venmo for payment.

This was my first time meeting her, but it felt like I have known her for some time. She recommended something for me to try next time -- the "Fresh EarthV Trio (V)" a popular classic Northeastern dish. I'm definitely adding that to my list. What keeps me coming back? It's the consistency -- the service, cost, portion, and most importantly, the flavor. After my shift at work, I genuinely look forward to that first bite of my Dry Chili Pepper Tofu. (Note: if you only want smaller serving of their great, thick noodles, order $4 add-on as a side in place of rice with regular dish.) I always have leftovers to enjoy at home. Dumpling orders are large and shareable. (Always 6 or 8 pieces.) My fave when dining in is amazingly delicious and huge Fish Fillet in Hot and Sour Cabbage Broth. (That's best with rice side to help absorb broth.) So good and healthful to balance the dough density of whatever dumplings you might also order -- they're all great. When getting order to go (or delivered) I like Kung Pao Chicken; it travels well. Order added green veggie dish for sharing -- I lean toward Chinese Broccoli; you'll really want the balance with the delicious dumpling and noodle dishes. Large cocktail menu -- Lychee Martini is so refreshing. Important: cash only for dining in. There's an ATM by their front door. Takeout and delivery accepts credit cards. Most reasonably priced parking nearby (if you don't score a limited street spot) is ParkAmerica at 1040 Race St a few doors down. In fact, it was one of the valet guys in that garage who recommended Dim Sum Garden when I was seeking great Chinese option. (Thank you, Ceasar!)

I just get a feeling that the focus is on pushing alcoholic drinks rather than on the food. The pork buns felt like they were previously frozen and were very sweet. Shrimp dumplings tasted off. Service was never the star but it wasn't so dismissive either. Just a very bad experience and while I won't go back, I also don't want to rate them 1 star as that would be unfair. Their food now is no better than the next guy and that's disappointing. Cash only btw. I write this because they do not post signs and a couple tables had to go grab cash from their ATM machine.

However, I found that the meal didn't live up to what I remembered at the UCity Han Dynasty or the Sichuan food I've had at other spots. My partner and I ordered the dan dan noodles and double cooked pork belly to share, our longtime regular order. The portions were generous and prices were affordable, but both dishes fell short in some ways. The dan dan noodle sauce was mostly sesame-based with little of the chili heat I remembered, and there was only a bit of the ground pork topping. It left me wondering whether they hold off on the spice at this location due to the clientele, whether they changed the recipe, or whether it was just an off day. The pork in the double cooked pork was overcooked and tough, and the dish didn't have enough of the veggie components (leeks and peppers) to balance it out. Another minor nitpick - there was a World Cup game going on while we ate and the multiple downstairs TVs had the game on. The second floor where we were seated also had a nice big TV, yet it seemed to be left on a screensaver slideshow of random landscape photos. Would have been nice to watch the game! I was overall left feeling pretty meh about the meal. I'd give the UCity location another shot, but don't think I'd come back to the Old City one.
