These Native Miamians are hard to please, at least the 3 girls with us, and they had a great time. The weather in NYC had been rainy and cold up to the day, the night before around 11pm I texted about the weather policy and they replied right back. Thank goodness rain stopped! The Shearwater was located in the beautiful Marina behind the new Brookfield place designer mall and World Trade 1. The crew was awesome, really nice people my girls were getting a little cold (July evening 62f) they brought them out blankets. Got great shots of the fam with NYC skyline and lady liberty close up. We took the simple evening sail, folks brought their dinners on board the crew sold wine, beer, and soda. Great fun family time! Very classy sailboat! read more

We arrived just a few minutes early to check in and receive our drink tickets. Lots of couples but it seemed like it would be a nice group activity as well. Once on the sail boat we were instructed to grab a seat anywhere on the boat. They handed out comfy fleece blankets too. Drinks were a nice variety of beers, wines, sparkling wine, soft drinks and water. The entire crew were really friendly and the guests on board was a really chill and fun group. I love the Shearwater and recommend it to everyone. I take all my guests who visit NYC throughout the year (for personal and professional purposes) and it's always a highlight of their trip. It's not touristy, has beautiful views, and Lana, the bartender, is attentive and kind. We always hop on the sunset cruise from 7-9 and grab dinner at PJ Clark's at Brookfield right after. Bring a bottle of wine or bubbly and pay a reasonable corkage fee. Be sure to take a few snacks in case you get hungry (cheese, crackers, grapes). The Captain is a hit or miss. I didn't grab the name of our most recent captain but he was a bit rude (which typically isn't the case). The rest of the crew tho--amazing and helpful, adding to the beauty of the overall experience. Highly recommend. You won't regret it. read more

While it was with some initial trepidation that I boarded this large sailboat on an overcast midday office excursion the crew of this boat really turned my frown upside down. The boat was in beautiful condition, large with lots of intimidating ropes, canvas and a swinging mass that was thisclose to knocking me overboard a few times. Yet with all of this I felt pretty darn comfortable throwing back glass after glass of bubbly served up by a smiling woman who assured me we weren't the drunkest group they've seen yet. In fact, another crew member even chimed in that they'd once had a guy *try* to jump off the boat to swim to land while inebriated. They had managed to restrain him, though I'm not sure the next day at work was made any less awkward. Our group of about 40 Yelp sailors fit surprisingly well and with cigars in hand we even managed to appear regal as we got ahold of our sea legs. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't quite as cooperative and after an hour or so most of us were huddled together shivering as the crew continued to swing around the bay. The open bar helped and a big thanks to the incredible crew that managed to work the entire sailboat around a massive group of useless drunkards. Last summer, I purchased 2 Yelp deal vouchers for Manhattan by Sail for me and my father. Finally got the chance to book them and decided it would be a perfect Father's Day adventure for us. I booked the 2 pm sail but I imagine the sunset time would have been incredibly gorgeous as well. The Manhattan by Sail boat, the Shearwater schooner, is located in the North Cove Marina on the Hudson River in Battery Park City. Beautiful park and food area right nearby behind the American Express building to sit and enjoy the views before you sail. The Shearwater is a fantastic boat with room for about 40 people. On board was the caption, 2 crew members, the bartender and about 30 passengers. The captain explained everything before we left the marina. From time to time, the sail moved with the change of the wind but you were warned so no head hitting occurred. Everyone grabbed any seat they could find (there was enough room for everyone). Once we hit the high seas (just kidding, its an hour and a half trip to the Statue of Liberty and back), everyone was free to walk around and sit on deck. I even climbed to the very tip of the boat to snap some cool shots. Included with each voucher were 2 drink tickets. They had a selection of beer, white wine, soda, coffee, etc. There is a very decently sized cabin below the deck that houses a...very interesting toilet. The captain did explain how to use it, it was quite amusing. It was an amazing experience. You get to see Manhattan's skyline from angles generally missed out on. The crew was incredibly friendly and offered to take group photos for you. I have already been recommending it to friends and family and will gladly take another trip in the future. read more

When looking for activities in the city to do with visiting family members, I often try to brainstorm "what is not in Times Square?" The answer this week was "water!" Enter sailing on a boat in the Hudson. This was a great setup, staff were friendly, easy to find the boat in the harbor, and the trip itself was great. I didn't realize how fast 90 minutes went by: we had one pass by the Statue of Liberty, then back to harbor. A free drink ticket was a nice touch, beers with my wife and mom on a boat was brilliant. Great price, fun outing, would definitely recommend it to others! If only there were fewer people on the boat, and more time out on the water (we did use the motor for a good portion of the trip, but that's Mother Earth's fault), but still a definite must. read more

I have been spending the entire afternoon going back and forth with the reservation person after our 10-min long phone call which she gathered all the info she needed and processed the transaction with the confirmation email. My husband and I got tickets for Manhattan by Sail as a gift. This was almost two years ago, when we had to cancel our trip. Two years later, the tickets were still valid and we finally went on the wine tasting tour. We had a really good time. The weather was nice, though we did need our wind-breakers once we got going. I recommend taking extra layers, though there are blankets available which staff will readily offer if they see that you might need one. The boat is small and the atmosphere is intimate. There are not too many other people on there to make it feel crowded. I had read that some people weren't happy with the amount of wine they were served for the tasting. We tasted four wines from a winery in the Rioja region of Spain. There was a Pinot Grigio that was served between the various tastings to top up our glasses while we waited. The cheese and meats selection were a great accompaniment and were refilled when they ran out. The staff were all very friendly too. I would definitely recommend this to friends and family visiting during the season. read more

We took the Sunday brunch cruise that leaves at 11:00 AM from the North Cove at the World Financial Center. The only place where you can actually sign in and pick up tickets that were ordered online is at the South Street Seaport across the entire island of Manhattan. And guess what? You can only pick up your tickets the day of the sail and the ticket booth doesn't open until 10:00 AM. No where on the booth or the website does it give you these hours of operations. When I got to the ticket booth, the person manning the booth first tells me "wait a minute" (I had gotten there at 9:00 AM) and then tells me "I'm in the wrong place." I didn't say a word and she caught herself. (All the while I was thinking...she and this booth is in the wrong place!) Once we go to the dock, the boarding process went ok. We found some seats in the middle of the boat which was in the shade. Unfortunately there was a large party that formed around us. These people were non-stop yelling and standing on top of us. Finally we got up and found another part of the boat that was quieter. If a party is going to sign up for a boat, they should just charter it for the entire party. The rest of the people on the boat were much better behaved. The food selection was good. Perfect brunch fare (as described by other reviewers) plus mimosas. The crew was attentive but relatively quiet. I too would have at least expected some type of narration from time to time. The boat is relatively small and does rock, so if you get seasick, stay away and look for a larger boat. For me, 2 hours was enough. We did catch some good breezes that felt great. Overall, I would probably also look for a non-sail vessel the next time. read more

Went on the weekend brunch trip this weekend with my husband for a continued celebration of our one-year anniversary. Overall, the trip was good. The weather was gorgeous and everything was on time. We got to see the Statue of Liberty up close and hung around mostly around Jersey, lower Manhattan area. I had thought we would be traveling more around the city, so that was a bit disappointing, but still fun. The food was OK. It was mostly pastries, bagels and cream cheese with one really "brunch" item: an egg fritatta of some sort and also some smoked salmon. It was hard to eat though with no real seating anywhere. There was also just one guy serving the whole boat (about 30-40 people) and so it took some time to get our fill of mimosas or water. There is beer and wine included in the price as well, which is nice. My husband and I pretty much sat on the deck and just watched the sights go by - it was great and relaxing. The only other downside was that there was a good amount of kids on the trip that brought the adult fun factor down a bit. It's hard to spend some quality time when there are kids running around and some kids screaming they are scared of the relatively tame waves. Overall it was a good trip, but would probably prefer to do maybe the beer tasting option or something else where there wouldn't be any chance of large families hanging out. read more

While the sail was amazing (great winds the day we went), the business transaction was terrible. First off, we call the Shearwater to make a reservation (using our Go Pass). They tell us to book online and put in a credit card to reserve the date/time. So we do this. Then we check in at the dock on time. They scan our Go pass and look at the reservation and tell us we are good to go (seems to me that the Go pass worked and we are good to go). A week later I look at my credit card statement and see $110 FULL charge for two tickets? What gives? So I call. They tell me that the Go pass was not good for the "Sunset Sail" that we went on. Ok, then WHY would you scan the passes at the dock, and WHY wouldn't you tell the NYC tourist that your pass is only good for 50% off the full price unless you do a daytime sail??? Bait and switch? Not only this, but they didn't apply the 50% off to my the fee charged to my credit card. Basically, they scan the go pass so they can charge the GO pass people, but not give the user ANYTHING. They shouldn't have even needed to scan the pass, and a good employee would say, you can't use the pass for the sunset cruise at that moment. Not AFTER you look at your credit card a week later. So I looked at the delta in the pricing for a sunset sail and a daytime or city lights cruise. The sunset cruise is SHORTER and costs $5 more than the daytime cruise. So basically, they get people on the fact that it is peak demand and that they THINK they get the sunset cruise included when really it isn't. Could have been a great cruise and experience, but was ruined by poor customer support and staff. Very disappointed and would not recommend. read more

Shearwater is a beautiful 85 year old sailboat that does group sails out of Battery Park City's North Cove Marina in front of One World Financial Center. The boat is gorgeous and the views are too. You get to see great views of the city, Jersey city, Statue of Liberty and more. They offer a few types of sails and the regular ones get five stars from me. This review is for the wine "tasting" sail. Note, the below descriptions are accurate but my reactions may have some sarcasm. As someone who has done hundreds of wine tastings when I lived in California, this is the first wine "tasting" I have seen that gives you five one ounce pours over two hours. An entire glass worth! Don't worry, they have one woman, a wine distributor, who describes each wine to around four people at a time before going onto the next group. With around 40 people on the boat, you only have to wait about 15 minutes before your next ounce. Cross your fingers and may even get a second one ounce pour of the wine, so I had nearly 8 ounces (1.5. glasses) over two hours. This one you can sign up without the wine "tasting" or you can pay an extra $52 (for two people) and get access to rationed wine. Yes, you yet get a two hour trip with 1.5 glasses of wine x 2 for only $190. From what I remember from a few years ago, their regular tours (not the wine tasting one) actually had something like an open bar. Be sure not to go on that one or ride the Staten Island Ferry for free where they have $4 beer. Dear Shearwater Company (Manhattan By Sail), Having you or the wine distributor save money by not pouring much wine is tantamount, and I would not worry about marketing a wine-free-wine-tasting as a wine tasting. It will be good for business in the long run. read more

I haven't even been on this voyage yet, but so far, my experience is 1,000% positive! i have done the clipper city with a friend who gifted the tickets to me but wanted to do something a little more intimate for my 1st anniversary with my significant other. i got SO lucky in having Nichole assist me through the planning and booking. she took the time to really explain the differences to me, answer any questions i had no matter how obvious and basic, and had so much patience i couldn't help but thank her endlessly. she is incredible support staff and her service alone makes me even more excited to take this trip than i was before i called!! thank you so much, Nichole! i can't wait to have such a memorable experience for our anniversary- all thanks to you!! read more

It is hot waiting in line so stay in the shade and don't forget sun screen. There were ppl who wore dresses which blew away. We really enjoyed our cruise and we avoided a storm which made it really exciting. Loved the views and the watching the workings of the sails. We got really close to the statue. We left late because they did wait for someone running late even though they advertised they will not wait. Then we had to get a tow bc of the wind to get out of the harbor. Once we were on the water we loved it. They have us a drink bc of the wait but then they never came back to get your empty can. So we were trying to take pics while holding the drinks, awkward. The kids loved moving up front to king of the world it. They did take our pics when we asked them to which was nice. We had an eventful time because there was a storm in the distance but we enjoyed it. Maybe if the water was smoother you could enjoy drinks but we really didn't take advantage of that. But to wrap up, it was a super fun time, awesome way to see the statue and wonderful views of the city. We are so glad we did this experience! read more

Very small and intimate experience. Thanks to yelp events I have had the chance to sail around the city various times. However, at clear waters my bf surprised me with tickets. We weren't sure what to expect since we've never sailed around nyc on our own terms. But clearwaters made the experience comfortable, easy and memorable. Their high demand didn't leave us any other choice but to book a 9:30pm sail. It would of been ideal to experience the sail during a sunset but nevertheless it was a great experience. It was beautiful to sail at night and see the nyc lights reflected against the river. Quick notes: tickets need to be picked up before the sail so get there early! They do sell alcohol on board, we bought beer (stella) for $6. The entire sail takes up to an hour and a half. We sailed towards the statue of liberty, beautiful view ofc. I was super excited to cruise around the Hudson on a sailboat, since I had never been aboard a sailboat before. Thanks, Manhattan By Sail, for making that NOT come true. "It's too windy," one of the crew said. "So we will not be lifting the sails today, but will be going by motor instead." Ummm, thanks, but I could have used my jetski for that. Great. First, they tell me all the Sunday afternoon wine tasting sailings are booked, so I had to opt for a Saturday "sail" because that's all they had left. As a consolation, they added "open bar" to the two tickets I had - since the cruise was 30 minutes shorter and sans booze than what I paid for. The boat left late and came back a little early, not even making it the full 90 minutes. And it wasn't really open bar either. My friend and I had about 3 beers each. Hey, it was his birthday and we were having an all-day excursion and this was where it was starting. But the waitress kept disappearing. The "sail" itself was cool, but definitely not great considering I paid $50/person TO SAIL. And to see that others have gotten tickets at MUCH better prices makes me a little upset, since I consider myself to be pretty savvy on these things. Sail? No. Open bar? Not really. Cost? As I came across a groupon I want to buy for the speed boat cruise that is the fastest boat you can get on in NYC, it hit me that I've been on quit a few different boat rides that I've never reviewed! I came here about 3/4 yrs ago for my friends sister's birthday. She had an extra ticket so I'm not sure of the price but had a BLAST! It's a sail boat which is pretty awesome. I felt like I was getting a real deal of experience being on the sea by one, and only made it better that we were drinking! Holla! The wine I had was great and it was unlimited so needless to say, being the lush that I am, I certainly was swigging it back and they kept refilling. lmao. It was a gorgeous summer night so my dress I had on was perfect for the ride. Take into account the type of weather & how hot it is when you go. I read a previous review giving them one star because it was cold. IT IS COLDER ON THE SEA and I think them having blankets is a curtousy not requirement. Really not fair to knock a company because you went unprepared. I've been on other boat rides and knew to wear long sleeves, bring a light jacket, etc. There was a time I was even a bit nippy w/ a long sleeve but would never blame the company for that.smh. My boyfriend and I took a chance on a livingsocial deal and bought 2 sailboat passes, good for 6 "tastings" of beer, some cheese and crackers, all while on a 2 hour boat cruise around to see Lady Liberty. We paid about 50 bucks for each ticket and that was a great price (because frankly, I don't think it was quite worth the full price ticket). The staff was basically a bunch of fun loving and easy going guys that were half outgoing/half hungover from the night before and just wanted to do their job and not make eye contact. I do have to say that the tastings were bountiful and unlimited...we were given each a glass for the first tasting and just came back to the bar whenever we wanted to try another kind/go back for the refill. Since I don't really drink (I bought this for my boyfriend's birthday), I got my fill of the assorted crackers/cheese/salamis that they provided. yum. No where else floating in the harbor are you gonna find a bar as well stocked, for starters- AND the prices are more than fair since they don't take your inability to flee as opportunity to gouge you. And no where else in the harbor are you gonna find captains and crew members who know what they're doing so well, they make their tough jobs look easy. I've been on this boat a shipload of times this summer and always manage to drag a few (reluctant) fellow NYers. Sure there's a bunch of tourists from god knows where on board at all sails, but strangely enough we ALWAYS manage to find other die hard NYers who have never taken in the city from the harbor perspective. Get on this boat! And help the crew raise some sails (you will sweat) then kick back and raise a plastic cup to a beautiful ride round the finest harbor or them all. See you next year! read more

Looking for a new way to keep cool in this brutal heat, a few girlfriends and myself wandered around downtown, expecting to catch on fire any minute. Somebody handed us a flyer and said something that caught all of our ears: Free Drink Ticket. What's this? It's a sailboat. I love boats, let's check it out. We asked the chick who gave us the flyer where the tickets could be purchased, and with her prettiest thick Russian accent ringing in our ears, we skeedaddled for cooler shores. What we were not expecting was the coolest ship around. It was Huu-u--u-u-u-uge compared to the other sailboat tours offered nearby, and it even has a real bar on it. And full of cute boys. Ok maybe not FULL of cute boys, but it's staffed with a fair share of easy-on-the-eyes. The Captain made a funny speech before we cast off, he seemed funny and personable, not like the gruff crusty sailor that you'd expect, but that's not a bad thing in a tour, is it? We took off and went straight for the Brooklyn Bridge! I've never seen the underside of the Bridge like that, definitely worth the price of admission right there. The crew was friendly and super-informative, they had answers for every question that we asked, and seemed genuinely interested in making sure that we had a pleasant time. The bar and two bathrooms didn't hurt either. I found out more about the history of Manhattan on that tour than I have in any other hour and a half spent with strangers. I love the history of New York City, it's so rich and diverse. It was a bright and sunny day, not too cool out on the water, and there was a tent cover-thing on deck too, so we had our choice of sunny, shaded, or even talking up the Captain on the quarter deck. Great views the whole time, and I don't know what the other poster is used to in NYC, but you can barely hear the engine. With a boat that big though, I can't imagine relying on the wind alone to get me out that far and back on a schedule. I asked about the sails while we were on board, and we were told that most of the time that it's windy at all, the boat's in neutral anyway, the engine stays on out of necessity but we're still 'sailing'. I love New York with a passion, but this was a whole new thing for me. Combining old-world sailing with the enormity of New York City is a great combination. If you haven't sailed on the Hudson in a classic boat with great service and great people - not a crowded low-end booze cruise - you haven't experienced the best of New York. Nobody does it better than Manhattan by Sail. Claire and her team at Manhattan by Sail helped me pick the perfect boat and organize the various details. She also apparently has control over the weather since it was beautiful both times despite the forecast! My guests and I had a wonderful time on both outings! The staff are pretty cool and nice. they would either keep to themselves or be glad to have a conversation with you, but it's all up to you the customer. they will not bother you unless asked =] So anyway I got tickets for an hour and a half...at the time of booking, I thought, "hmm that seems like a pretty long go"...but in actuality that time went by so quick. Everything felt more like a half hour. You know what that means when time flies by like that? - That you had a great time. Plenty of chances for photographs if you're one of those people, like me, who likes documenting your fun times. And if you're stressed or just need some "you time" this is a great way to do it too. You may still be in the city, but being on the water is just a completely different feel. And sail boating is not the same as cruising. It's quite interesting sometimes too, how you may feel lost in the water with no sense of direction - but that's probably just me. I'm not sure why they lack one star...but it's gotta be something. A friend reserved a block of tickets and there was a mix up at the ticket window about who bought tickets and a few of us bought tickets outside of that reserved block, a small mistake. After speaking to the general manager before the trip we were told we could get a refund on three tickets. After the sailing tour, the general manager was nowhere to be found and the manager at the ticket window told us we were not able to get a refund on our tickets; there was no sign at the time saying there were no refunds -- basically they forced us to take another cruise or forfeit $135 -- that's a great business model: fraud! There's no shortage of people buying tickets for this cruise so I am confused as to why a company like this would refuse refunding 3 tickets. I can't imagine $135 will hurt them. TIP: For future reference, you can get the same "tour" for free if you ride the Staten Island Ferry round trip. read more

Went sailing on Father's Day and it was lovely. There were five of us and we had a blast. We did the wine tasting sailing and Erin, the wine expert, gave us a great education on wine and the selections that were picked for that sailing. This is awesome for anyone who likes boats, sailing, or booze! The sun was setting, water was calm, and the weather was beautiful. I've gone for my birthday two years running. The first year the wind was so calm that they had to actually use the motor for a while and it was still a blast. The captain was also very nice! read more
