10/5/23 ~4:30pm Went here based on the reviews and us wanting some seafood while in the area. Honestly, was just ok to me. You'll have to ask for specials if they're not told to you. There is a big wall in back left with them but we were not made aware of them. I noticed it after we ordered and would have ordered something different if I had known!! I ordered the shrimp and scallop pasta and girlfriend got the crab cakes. Girlfriend reallllly liked the white wine cream sauce on my pasta but could only have a few bites due to her food allergies...fyi: all cream sauces contain Carrageenan. To me was just ok. Didn't do a true count on shrimp but think there were like 6-8 small shrimp. Just figured there would be more since they specialize in seafood. Counted the scallops and had like 5 lol. Think they're U60/80 in size so yeah, not much. Girlfriend also liked the crab cakes. She stated a lot of crab and little filling...score! The mixed steam veggies she got, not the same. Just varying temps through out the veggies. One veggie we couldn't identify lol. Now to service...our male server did a great job answering our carrageenan question but once he brought the food, he stopped by one more time to ask if everything was good. At that point, yes but then I ran out of tea and didn't get anymore due to his absence. Never got the check, had to go to counter for it. Then had to stand there for a few minutes as our server had to finish texting lol. Then we were finally able to pay and leave. So if you're craving PASTA with a few shrimp OR good crab cakes, this is a good spot for you. read more

We stopped into this restaurant because it had good Yelp reviews. They were right. Great food and awesome service, we were seated immediately which with 2 toddlers is very important. The kids got paper and crayons to keep them happy. We ordered drinks. Our margaritas were delicious and had just the right amount of alcohol. We ordered our food and after a short wait, our food was served piping hot. It was delicious. My shrimp were fried to a golden crispy perfection without being over cooked, the potatoes were swimming in butter. Not something for calorie counters but yummy. The coleslaw was good. I thought some of the cabbage could have been chopped finer but it tasted good. The kids liked their chicken strips and fries. Overall it was a really good experience. read more

Environment was great, very friendly staff. Moderately long wait times, I had grouper, wife had shrimp skewers, with rice and asparagus. Almost no seasoning on the rice. Shells is a top-notch restaurant all the way. We had oysters, coconut shrimp, their seafood platter with fried fish, shrimp and scallops, and chicken tenders, and they were all absolutely outstanding in every way. Even the side salad I ordered was super fresh and delicious. Our server, Red, was amazing. Very friendly, positive attitude, smiling all the time, very helpful and kind. Came in for lunch on a Saturday. Cute seafood vibes Very tourist like. Service was good and attentive. Crab cakes were hilarious maybe 1 oz size , there is a good amount of lump crab but again they are a tad bigger then a quarter. I would skip. Clam chowder was excellent , the best part of our meal , filled with fresh chunks of clams. I got the seafood pasta which was heavy with shrimp and clams. Overall good flavor. My husbands grouper sandwich for $ 23,99 was good but not worth the price , his bad for asking for grouper not realizing the up charge for that particular fish. Hit and miss overall. I stopped by for some drinks while walking Gulf Boulevard enjoying the weather. As a result, I didn't get to experience the food as I had just eaten. I felt the vibe of the place was not super welcoming. They have this sign posted at the bar that was off-putting and kind of obnoxious. Others commented on it too, so I wasn't alone. I'm not a snowflake and don't offend easily, so they can put whatever sign they want up for all I care but it just left a bad taste in my mouth. Can't say I'd come back. read more

A bucket of crab legs for $36? Two pounds of broken legs will run you $36. To get a pound of cluster runs you $37, so I think we got a better value with first deal. This popular seafood restaurant also serves good kid's meals for my 9 and 7 yo. The clam chowder claims to be the best, and it's very good. My wife thought it was too salty. Bacon will do that. Bacon made the chowder, but I'd back off adding any extra salt. It does get busy, so come early (dinner time). We arrived at 4:45 and left around 5:45. Came here for their all day every day happy hour. I started with a few of their sangrias which i thought were perfect. Not too sweet but you can enjoy the sweetness of the fruit. I got the peel and eat shrimp hot with old bay seasoning. They were amazing. I really enjoyed them. We ended up staying for dinner. I got the grilled trout which I thought was delightful. Coconut shrimp 5/5: Great crispness, honey glazed, excellent. Fried Calamari 5/5: Good happy hour price, the kids' favorite item. Steamed white wine clams 1/5: Very disappointed... the bread was inedible because they were like blocks of salt. There were a few clams that not completely opened. Husband and I were visiting from Wisconsin. We had the oysters and clams for appetizers and they were amazing. Biggest oysters I've ever had. Husband had the $20 snow crab special and loved it. I had the scallops and shrimp combo. I was a bit disappointed in the size of the scallops and shrimp on the combo but they tasted good. Great as always! Atmosphere kind of beach relax vibe. They have indoor and outdoor seating. It was t too crowded when I went so I had a choice of seating. Went for the soup hadn't had it in years and it did not disappoint. If I could buy a quart and take it back to my hotel I would've. My hotel didn't have a microwave sadly. So definitely order the soup when you go. I also ordered the coconut shrimp, conch fritters and this chicken berry salad. All very tasty. Salad was nothing amazing but tasty for what I ordered. The shrimp was very good the sauce served with it was sweet and spicy. The coach fritters tasty would have preferred more conch in mine but they were very good. We were in town for the races last week and haven't been to a Shells in years. When our kids were young we had one close to home and it was a favorite. Boy how I miss that shrimp pasta and this Shells didn't disappoint. It was a Thursday night and the place was packed. We were lucky to find three spots at the bar. Staff was working hard and very friendly. We had the peel and eat shrimp and they were a great size and seasoned well. All three of us had the shrimp pasta for our entree and it came out in a timely manner was hot and every bit as good as I remembered. We were too full for dessert but the options looked good. My son loved the meal so much that on Saturday after the race he placed a huge order for delivery for him and his friends. read more

This place by far is the BEST seafood that this area has to offer. It is or go to place every time we are in the Madeira Beach area. When I say go to place, I mean if we are here 7 days, we eat here 11 or 12 meals. It's that good! We have ad the crab cake pasta, the shrimp pasta, oysters, the clam chowder, and the fish platter. All have been amazing. The service here is great. The workers know what's great a will recommend great dishes. This place proves you don't have to be "on the water" to be the best around. We loved our lunch here! This was the first restaurant we visited as soon as we stepped off our plane and we are so glad we did. We opted to sit outside so we could enjoy the nice weather. The outdoor seating area is covered and kept clean. We had no issues with bugs or anything. Our waitress, Red, was attentive and very helpful. The food was phenomenal. I tried the pasta that made Shells famous and understood why it caused the fame. It was truly delicious and I miss it already. My mom enjoyed the fish basket and raved about her fish. My dad tried the shrimp basket and didn't even offer to share, which is a telltale sign that he really enjoyed it. They don't immediately offer you a lunch menu when you come to visit, so you have to specifically ask for it. But, we were also told that they are going to be getting rid of the lunch menu soon.
