This is in the former Back Fin and it's an interesting concept. I wouldn't ordinarily tie wine with BBQ or expect to sell much white wine! It's also using the recent concept of fast food ordering. Before seating you pick your food and pay. Then find a table with your order number on a stick so they can bring your food. The wine list is deep and the food list is nice but limited. We ordered the salmon fish spread which was just ok. The brisket was good but sliced very thin. The choice of sauces was great and we chose the Alabama white and heat. The choice of sides was also good. We picked the BBQ beans and green beans with bacon. Both very good. We had split the brisket but my son was still hungry and he got a rib sandwich. Full disclosure: Mel and I know the owners of The Wine House very well. They own Gulfport Brewing, just a few feet away from The Wine House on the other side of the historic Peninsula Inn and Bar. They're wonderful people who exemplify Gulfport's artistic and inclusive spirit -- they're creative, they take pride in their work and they take care of their people. Those qualities engender loyalty among employees and patrons alike. In short, they're awesome, and we support them any way we can. That said, I'm telling you as objectively as I'm able that The Wine House is a delightful addition to Gulfport's eclectic collection of businesses and eateries. From the moment you walk in, you feel like you're in someone's home more so than a restaurant -- the soft pink tint to the walls, the wine racks that line the walls, the small, cozy circular bar where the staff greets you with smiles and menus, all come together to deliver an experience that's a little quieter, a little mellower than what you'll find elsewhere in town, but is still unmistakably Gulfport. The wine selection here isn't the biggest in town, but it is unusual. It's the range of styles that really stands out -- yes, you're going to find luscious and bold reds and crisp whites like many other wine retailers, but you're also going to find fruit wines, subtle rosés that pair well with BBQ (more on that in a minute), and other labels you won't find just anywhere. That all may sound intimidating to wine novices out there. Not to worry! The staff here is ready to answer your questions and offer suggestions. Chances are you're going to end up trying something new while you're here, and I'm willing to bet you'll really enjoy it. Now, if wine isn't really your thing, they've got beer from Gulfport Brewing and then there's the food menu. On our visit we stuck to charcuterie and smoked fish dip, all of which were excellent. The Wine Room will put together a charcuterie board catered to your meat cheese selections and the size you specify (2 meats x 2 cheeses, 3 meats x 3 cheeses, etc) and plate it up so artfully that you might not want to eat it at all, and instead just look at it and take pictures. The fish dip, meanwhile, is the delicious product of a local collaboration. Give that a try and you're supporting two local businesses at once. But what about the smoked meats? All you have to do is walk by The Wine Room on any given day or night and the aroma coming from their smoker will make your mouth water. The wings are huge and juicy, the brisket is tender, and the Southern Comfort--homemade cornbread topped with pulled pork, pickles, jalapeños and the house sweet BBQ sauce--is so good it simply defies description. Al, the smoke master at The Wine House, has talent that defies description. You just have to taste it for yourself. Put all that together with one of the best covered porch outdoor dining option in the Waterfront District and you've got something truly special, whether its for live music on the weekends or Yoga Nights on Thursdays. I love The Wine House! I don't drink wine often, but I do prefer white wine vs red wine. I try different wines every time I go here (reds & whites), and they've all been really good! Service is great. Their recommendations have always been spot on to the flavors I like. They also have unique types of wines that I haven't heard of. Saw the yelp & google reviews and decided to give them a try. Street parking is very difficult to come by as there are many places in a small area. I can imagine on a Friday or Saturday it would be impossible. The building is cute with plenty of outdoor seating and that fun garden patio vibe. Interior is small and cozy but very clean. Hostess was pleasant and offer some options as this was our first time. We got the sampler which comes with 4 meats & 4 sides plus "pickled veggies" (which is just vinegared pickles) and a Hawaiian roll like you would buy from the store. When we opened it to check before we left the restaurant, we saw five small containers plus the big Styrofoam platter. We figured all our meats were in the platter plus the roll and the other five were our four sides and our cornbread. We got home to be disappointed that we had no cornbread. The truffle mac & cheese was good and not overpowering. The potato salad was not my favorite a little too mustardy and oniony for my likes, but my husband liked it. The baked beans were good, but extremely spicy and tasted like some sort of alcohol was cooked into it. The pulled chicken had good flavor, but was very dry. The pulled pork was good and the ribs a little tough but had decent flavor. We were not a fan of the dry rub seasoning. IMO sauces are a compliment to good BBQ and not a necessity however the chicken definitely needed moisture. The sweet and tangy and the Carolina mustard sauces were good. The man running the food was adorable and really friendly, but the girls at the front weren't as friendly. my biggest complaint, is that this is a restaurant that specializes in barbecue food, however, it is very bad barbecue. The smoked meats were tough and did not seem like they had been smoked enough. I was having to pry the meat off of my chicken wings, and my brisket was so tough. I had to cut it with a steak, knife and was filled with mostly fat. You order at "the bar" which is really a counter with the wines displayed. You take a number to your table and wines/food delivered. Plenty of seating when we arrived but got very busy within the hour. Went back for some bbq which was tasty. They also offered ribs, pulled pork, and a variety of sides but we knew this was not our last stop so didn't order an entire meal. Live music playing for about half of our visit, otherwise quiet outside of table/guest chatter. Dog friendly. Will definitely be back. A great choice if you want to enjoy some wine and avoid our more crowded neighboring towns.
