Amazing store with a surprising collection of finds! I needed a tutu, and they had an entire corner of the store, with aisle after aisle, stuffed with tutu after tutu. So although they were stocked for Halloween, they definitely have a variety of wear for all sorts of dance. Plus, everything else you need to match...accessories, hair dye, mustaches, you name it. This place has just as much as Aahs and more, plus a better ambience! The clerks are also SO helpful and really know their stuff. I brought in a pair of skirts to compare and they told me one of them wasn't made of tulle, but was actually a petticoat. I was asked what look I was going for, and two of them spent their time looking for my colors and length. When I tried the outfit on in the dressing room, which is quite large, some of the ladies working and chatting put in their two cents about the look. One offered suggestions as to what else I could add to create it. Great help!! Also, they actually close at 7 pm (and not the 6 pm noted above), but will let customers in at 6:55 pm (hehehehe) and slowly drift out by 7:15 pm. Total rip off. Went there with my girlfriend over the weekend to find a Halloween costume. She was looking at products by "Leg Avenue". Shelly's was selling these costumes for around 70-100$ (a few even more!) We went to one of those once a year Halloween stores that pop up in abandoned places and saw the same costumes by the same brand for half of those prices. Huge disappointment. Also the store is extremely hard to navigate through. I am not reviewing on their dance clothes, I have no experience with them in that department. read more

Can we talk about how amazing this place is....!?!? I came in on a Sunday to buy a leotard for an upcoming dance party. I walked in scared. I walked out a confident beauty. I'm a big dude. I have crazy ideas and ummm.... I'm a dude. I asked myself before walking in, "What am I doing at this store....?" I have a huge sense of comedy and I fit right in with the staff. I was toured through the entire building to find a leotard. I am recreating a Beyoncé look to parody. The staff called me Beyoncé, brought me shoes and tutus and leotards. I walked around the store. I was applauded and had a genuine good time. The selection is huge. The ideas are rampant. If they don't have it in stock, they'll make it for you. I simply said my idea and everyone ran with it. There was none of that bad talk like, "that's crazy or not gonna work." Their answers were, "Ok. We gotta make this work. How soon do you need it? When's your party, Beyoncé?" I loved how light-hearted everyone was throughout my hour at this location. This place has all things dance, there are a bunch of kids costumes, some dance costumes, but mostly for women and girls. There are plenty of items that will fit men too. Shoes, wigs, accessories, glue, glitter, and bags. I had the time of my life here. I can't wait to go back. Thank you for such a wonderful experience. I am reviewing this for the costume supplies only. I don't know anything about dancing except what looks good to me and what doesn't. Well need to find a costume last minute for a dress up party? This is a great place to go. The staff was super attentive and friendly and helped me find just what I wanted. Draw backs but not unique to this shop is that you can't try on wigs. They are final sale only. I am pretty sure its a California regulation, as this is California the regulation and litigation state! You can't try them on even with a wig cap. Which is kind of a bummer but I found a great wig anyway, it is exactly what I wanted to be Barney Rubble this weekend at a volleyball tournament called Smackfest. I would recommend this place to anyone. Good service. Nice parking lot behind the store. A good selection of costumes and wigs. My daughter and I came to Shelly's to have a dance costume altered and enhance the design. Let me tell you, when Juliet helps your kid reach the vision they asked for, it is an amazing experience! The customer service here is out of this world! Juliet not only brought a costume vision to life, she also altered 3 other costumes for us AND made my daughter's day, month and year by looking at sketches that my 11 y/o drew and helping her search the store for items that would turn my daughter's cosplay sketch into a reality. She encouraged my kid to keep sketching, and learning AND even made her a pair of shoulder pads to use for her creation!!! I cannot say enough good things about this place! Everyone in the store was extremely helpful and kind, the selection was great, and there's easy parking in the back. Still need a Halloween costume? Shelly's will probably have something for you. There is such a huge variety in here. Someone can really get lost walking through these rooms and rooms of masks, hats, and slutty costumes, but the staff is SO friendly and helpful, you'll find what you're looking for. Even if you don't know what you're looking for, they'll give you suggestions. My friend went in looking for just a cool top hat for his Mad Hatter costume, but came out spending close to $80 on all these other things that probably made his costume better. This place sells aerobic clothing, stage-production costumes, and dance-wear all year long, but when Halloween rolls around, the clown's out of the circus, and onto the sidewalk. Yes, I realize that sounds like a metaphor, but that's how this place got our attention--a creepy clown standing outside of this costume shop of all costume shops. Booga booga! read more

This place is wonderful! Tons of dance costumes, leotards, ballet shoes - pretty much everything you could need for a young dancer. If you have kids who dance or want to dance, bring them here and wonder around try stuff on and have a good time. This is also a great place to come to buy both children's and adults costumes. I was able to try on a number of the Halloween costumes I've seen at the online costume shops. Their prices seemed quite reasonable especially if I don't have to deal with ordering and then returning 3 different sizes of 4 different Halloween costumes in the attempt to find something fun but that still covers my ass. I'm not sure if they have a parking lot in the back - there is metered street parking that is free on Sundays. read more

I'd been out in search of a high-quality professional-grade dance unitard and since this store got seemingly good Yelp reviews, I decided to check it out. Maybe some people have had good experiences here but I sure didn't and I've purchased a lot of dancewear in my lifetime. I understand the need for retail security in this day and age but the place is so armored-up, front and rear, that I actually couldn't figure out how the hell to get in IN there at first. When I walked around and knocked at the front door, I was met through the closed doors and at first snipped at, told they were "busy" but then door felt grudgingly opened. Indeed, the one or two people who seemed to be working there were helping others but again, there was no indication that an appointment would be necessary in order to enter, nor apparently, was that a policy. I'd inquired about a particular type of unitard as well by phone, had been told they had a big selection. When I arrived, however, slim pickin's. Ok, supply chain issues, but still, I felt I'd been misinformed. In general, I felt the customer service was for my taste dismissive and the place itself felt like a cluttered mess. I enjoy old-fashioned stores with atmosphere, mind you, often seeking them out for the shopping experience. This one just felt dumpy, shabby and truthfully, even dirty. Yuck. It's been there a long time, though, and must have some kind of strong local following. For my own needs, however, I was glad I found other stores which far more suited to my tastes and were in fact an enjoyable shopping experience, both for atmosphere, for the type of goods sold, and the professional, warm and welcoming customer service treatment received in these other stores which for me at least was lacking during my visit to this place. read more

I came here to get some practice dancing shoes, and was well assisted by Elyssa. I came in not quite knowing what I wanted in a pair of shoes, but Elyssa was most helpful in ascertaining my needs and in showing a selection that would be varied enough for me to make an informed decision, but not so extensive that I felt overwhelmed. In short, her attention to detail and care for her customer led to my purchase of not just one pair of shoes, but 2, and I am eager to have the opportunity to try out those shoes on the floor. read more

When I came here on Halloween, the place was packed with customers, and the staff handled the rush like pros -- including fielding a plethora of phone calls from people who were obviously stressed out about getting last-minute costumes. What I have learned is not to expect great customer service from this place when I first walk in the door. However, if you are assertive and ASK for help then the staff here is very knowledgeable. They really know their products and where everything is located. The trick is to find someone to help you. But, I can expect a great selection of items from dance wear to costumes. i am no trained dancer (not even remarkably close!), but i do love costumes and shelly's offers a huge year-round selection of anything you would need for that theme party your former sorority sister is hosting (ahem, like me). i wish i had known about shelly's last year when i ended up buying a hat for my marching band uniform/halloween costume on ebay. shelly's has actual costumes, hosiery and socks, shoes, hats, sunglasses, jewelry, and of course, dance wear. i was on a quest for thigh high stockings (with bows, of course) for my heidi-ho oktoberfest outfit, had received a coupon for shelly's in the mail (recessionistas love coupons), and called shelly's inquiring about their availability of said stockings. the sales girl was extremely polite and helpful. the next day, i drove over, parked in their sweet lot located in the back of the store, and walked in. i was greeted with the same sales girl i spoke with on the phone. she helped me locate the stockings, then i took the opportunity to walk around the store. it's a little cluttered, but in a comfortable mom and pop shop kinda way. the store is well-staffed with friendly employees who are eager to help but not lurking around watching your back. upon purchasing my stockings with my coupon, the sales girl handed me ANOTHER coupon (score!) and a frequent buyer card. indeed, shelly's, i will be back! parking situation: tons of spaces in a private lot behind the store. read more

this place is AMAZING, went in there yesterday with my coworker looking for 10 identical costumes for our Carlton Hair Intl. hair show....we walked in, thought it was so cute inside and had EVERYTHING you can think of! A few minutes went by as we roamed around and we were approached by a sweet woman asking if we needed any assistance I sort of gave her a brief description on what we were looking for, with in MINUTES she picked out EXACTLY what we were looking for.. it's unfortunate that this is really the only place on the west side to go for dance wear. i hate this place so much but i keep having to go back in a pinch. the only redeeming value is that they have a pretty good selection. on the negative side, the clothes are overpriced - we bought a pair of pants then went online and found that they had been marked up at Shelly's to $60 from $40 on the manufacturer's own site. also, nothing is returnable. also, the people that work there are really *really* rude. i mean, rude beyond belief. i've been there numerous times and never once had good service or a friendly smile. i think the best plan is to go to Shellys only if you know what you want - don't count on help from the staff - then, once you've found out what works, go and buy it online. read more

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. Bought a pair of ballet slippers and had the sales person fit my young daughter. I trusted that they knew what they were doing because I had no idea how they were supposed to fit. Turns out she wore them once to ballet and had to take them off because they were hurting. Ballet teacher said they were at least a size too small as she had to curl her toes to fit in them. The sales person checked them on her and said they were correctly sized and that they would stretch and last a long time. When I called them they said they wouldn't take them back because they can't sell dirty shoes (she wore them indoors for about 15 minutes) and weren't willing to accept any responsibility for advising me on what size to buy. I was really surprised because I've been a customer there for years. read more
