They have a huge selection of dance wear. You can pretty much find a leotard in nearly every color. But I've found the quality of dance wear to be a bit on the cheap side, and the prices are a bit high. They do have a big selection of costumes and accessories which is convenient for Halloween or costume parties, but again, prices seem high for the quality. Service is also a bit... odd. Whenever I walk in to the store, I'm immediately asked if I need help in a strangely persistent way, but the staff doesn't really seem very friendly in general. I also had some problems getting help later when I needed a fitting room. If you need ballroom shoes, you might want to try Worldtone across the street as their selection of ballroom shoes is really huge. read more

Shelly's Dance and Costume is the best place !!! I needed point shoes for a baby shower the mom to be was into ballet and we all were going to sign the shoes and put them in a shadow box for the baby's room. Shelley herself took the time to help me with not only great ideas but what to use to write on the shoes and even made sure the ribbon was sewn on the shoes so I didn't have to do it!!!! I had the worst experience in Shelly's. I've been a loyal customer for 35 years, and I don't think I'll ever go back. And, to be clear, I shopped there annually to stock up for my daughter's busy year of weekly dance. Well, no longer! The owner's attitude and customer service skills are horrible. I was about to spend a few hundred dollars and I only spent $100. and left; which I totally regret giving her any money. She's an extremely bitter store owner nowadays, and I think it's time she closes her doors if she treats customers so disrespectfully. Clearly, Amazon wins! Shelly's is a great shop. I was looking for activewear on line and found Shelly's. Drove down there from Redondo Beach with my sister in-law and I was happily surprized to find they had a great selection of what I needed and much more. I ended up purchasing a few outfits and my sister in-law purchased some dance outfits for her girls. There isn't any stores like this in our area so I just had to post the good find. Shelly herself was in that day and she is one charming and friendly women and her staff has obviously been trained by her. It was a delighlful experience so I had to share. Cody and Shelly were super friendly and helpful. I was in search of a Michael Jackson costume for a party on Thanksgiving (long story) and they had a few options & kits outside the Halloween season when no other costume shops in the area did. I procrastinated and started looking for the costume the day before the party. The store has cheap bargain racks with cheap prices, but nothing that fit my needs. Unfortunately for me, I paid $125 (after a 10% discount) for an ill-fitting jacket ($80), wig, glove and a 4inch strip of gold fabric scraps they charged me $10 for (they didn't have MJ pants). There are entire MJ kits on Amazon & eBay for less than $50, but like I said, I snoozed. The 3star review is for the high price on the mediocre jacket and the $10 they charged me for the fabric scraps. Next time I'll plan ahead and avoid having no choice. read more

Stay away if you are looking for gymnastics shoes. The store personnel do not know the difference between ballet shoes and gymnastics and appropriate sizing. Was told that if it's the wrong type or size I can "bring it back". Turned out it was a completely wrong toe shoes and the store refused to take them back. read more

Honestly, this place is amazing and Shelly is the best. I never write reviews... but Shelly went above and beyond to help me find the perfect costume for Halloween. I couldn't find what I was looking for, and she helped me come up with an even better idea. She was able to alter a child's costume into exactly what I envisioned. I had a really good experience at this store last week. I dragged my tired and grumpy four-year-old in after her school day to buy ballet slippers, tap shoes and tights for a dance class she was beginning the following day. Marisol was so patient and understanding with her. It was clear she was used to this situation and made it as pain free as it could have been. We walked out with everything we needed and much less grumpy than at the beginning of the errand. The selection at this store is very extensive and the prices reasonable. The only complaint I have is that we were steered to buy ballet slippers that in fact are at least a size or two too big. But at least they will fit eventually and they work just fine. Shelly's is ideal if you need a costume, or basic dance apparel, but if you need pointe shoes I would not recommend this store. I prefer Capezio Glisse, and they don't carry them in my size; and I don't want to wait for them to be ordered, which Shelly will do. From my perspective, the selection of pointe shoes was pretty much, what you see is what you get, I tried on a few styles/brands that they did have; all were too narrow. When I needed an XL/size 6 Sansha Carlotta Tutu (this ballerina has a butt, lol!), Shelly ordered it for me and I had it in about 3 days. If I need something last minute, i will trek to Westwood to Shelly's, but I'm on a mission to find a store that carries the pointe shoe that my feet prefer. read more

I have been here several times for my 2 kids. They usually have what we need in stock, but if they don't they can order it quickly. They are well staffed with a helpful and knowledgeable team (important for serious dancers) and the owner has been there every single time I've been in. Their prices are reasonable - dance attire and costumes are pretty pricey wherever you go. Oh and another huge plus -parking is easy! They have free parking in the back or metered parking on the street. We just got new tap shoes and Halloween costumes and will definitely be back soon. read more

A friend of mine told me about Shelly's for Halloween costumes, and was she ever right! Anything you can dream up, Shelly's has it. If they don't, they'll help you put it together. I went in a little intimidated thinking I wouldn't find that perfect costume. Let's be honest, some costumes are made for supermodels (and/or lingerie models, but I digress). Shelly's has costumes for everyone in the family and for every size. The staff was very attentive, friendly, and they really made my visit fun! I gladly purchased my whole outfit at Shelly's, a one-stop shop, over one of those pop-up Halloween chains or Party City, and I'll tell you why. Have you tried to buy costumes at those places? The staff usually doesn't give a flying flip about helping you, they don't have enough inventory, there's never a comfortable spot to try things on. Then you go to Shelly's, and everyone is so nice and eager to really help you find something you like. There's a nice dressing room. They help you accessorize. Shelly's really is an example of why it's good to shop and support local business. You get what you pay for, and in this case what you pay for, is great customer service. I have been shopping at Shelley's for years... first for myself, and now for my 6 year old twin girls. Yes, we bought their very first ballet slippers there when they were 2 years old, and countless shoes, leotards, tutus, batons and the alike since... but my most recent experience was so SUPERIOR, and really exceeded my expectations that I had to write this review. My twins received a lovely ballet costume for their recital, but it did not have the "fluff" in the skirt that my girls love... so with the help of Thelma (the awesome manager) and Vicky (the amazing seamstress), yards and yard of tulle was sewn under "skirt" of the costume... and the perfect costume was created! My twin girls are so happy, and as a busy Mom, I appreciated of how easy everything was... and all done in 1 day... now that's service!!! I am definitely a raving fan of this store and would give then 10 stars if I could! read more

They must make their money elsewhere and NOT on selling ballet shoes or knowledge staff. I had gone in to try on a few Capezio and Bloch shoes. They do no carry ANY sort of Bloch shoes. The woman did not have any Capezio shoes in my size. I wear a street size 8, which is common. She claimed that no one wears that brand any more which is why they did not have my size and gave me a few other shoes that were completely the wrong size and fit. When I had asked for additional options she recommended the clearance section and brought a pair of 10.5 and 9. Those are obviously not my size and when I asked if she had any in my size, she said they ran small and should fit. I'm not sure if she thinks I'm an idiot but clearly they were too large for my feet. I left disappointed and went to another store with a larger selection and knowledgeble staff. From the looks of their selection, I was better off with my 12 year old Capezio shoes even with the amount of wear and tear they had! Wow!! I just made a visit to Shellys , and what a find!! They have it all, apparel,shoes and costumes. I found the staff to be very pleasant and knowledgable. The inventory is huge and listening to their advertising they make things for you. I did my research and found the prices to be low- hi depends on what you want. I only came here to purchase uniforms for my dance team, but they have more than just dance uniforms. They also have halloween costumes, fun and crazy accesories, and much more. It is not super huge, but the times I have gone they had different things. They carry a variety of tutus, jazz pants, dance leggings, cheer uniforms, etc. I am definitely a fan. Terrible experience! Is this a dance store or a Halloween costume store? Employees are not helpful when it comes to dance wear, shoes, etc! Prices are outrageous and selection is limited. My daughter tried on a leotard. When we were finished, I decided to be helpful and place back on the rack since the salesperson was no where to be found when we came out of dressing room. We left and went to our car that was parked in front of the store. As I sat there, returning a text, the sales person came out of the store and knocked on my window demanding to know what I did with the leotard. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I let her know that we replaced it on the rack. I don't think I'll be returning to this store anytime soon. I would rather do business at The Dance Store, peruse through the discount items at Danny's Dance Warehouse (all items are $10 or less) or the store at Westside Ballet, Santa Monica than return to this costume store! read more

AMAZING STORE! I went in to grab one last thing for my Halloween costume and I found so much stuff and ideas for next year. The ladies and guys that work there are SOO nice and helpful (and funny)!! I called two of my friends, while in the store, that I knew were still trying to find stuff and they are coming in tomorrow! I can't believe I've lived in LA for 4 years and just found this store.
