For example, I believe it is booth #3 where JFK proposed. Booth #6 is dedicated to Harry Truman and so on. The tavern has an old-school D.C. neighborhood vibe. The service is always friendly and attentive. The drinks are tasty-the gang here knows what they're doing. Chocolate old-fashioned can't be beat. Nice selection of mocktails too. The food is yum times a thousand. If you're going to give me a history lesson, Martin's Tavern, I'm ready for the full syllabus! We started with the Shrimp & Calamari, which was fried perfectly--crispy without being oily or overly salty. The mandarin-orange aioli was an excellent pairing. My wife ordered the French Onion Soup and absolutely raved about it. It had generous chunks of bread and onion, and the flavor was fantastic. We both went with the Lobster Roll, with regular fries for her and sweet potato waffle fries for me. Huge props to the fry cook because BOTH were out of this world! The portions were also enormous. The lobster rolls were tasty, but personally, I prefer mine with just warm butter. I felt the shallots and herb mayo competed a little too much with the lobster's flavor. One thing I really appreciated was how upfront they were about the DC surcharge. It's clearly printed in the menu, and our server made sure we knew about it before ordering. I've been to other DC restaurants where the surcharge mysteriously appears on the bill like a surprise DLC, so I appreciate the transparency here. The restaurant is much larger than I expected, and I was seated in a spacious booth. My waiter was young, kind, and very knowledgeable about the menu. He had some great recommendations, which came in handy when I was stuck deciding between appetizers. He suggested the fried zucchini, and I'm so glad I listened. It was delicious. definitely a 10/10. For my entrée, I ordered the crab cake with fries and a small side of coleslaw. Despite its smaller size, the crab cake was surprisingly good. It had more crab than filling, which is exactly how I like my crab cakes. I just wish the portion had been a little bigger. The fries were pretty standard. nothing particularly memorable. and unfortunately, I didn't care for the coleslaw at all. By the time my entrée arrived, the restaurant had gotten much more crowded, but it remained surprisingly quiet. I really appreciated that because it made the experience feel relaxed and comfortable. My friend ordered the fish with purple potatoes and green beans, and the fish was a 10/10. It was really good, and the sauce it came with was absolutely delicious. My only complaint was that I wished the vegetable portions were a little larger. Overall, the experience reminded me that I need to visit Clyde's more often. Once I got the bartenders attention it was easy and quick to get my drink, it just took a while and its annoying when they go to other people who got there after you first. The bar is full of seating too, so you have to stand behind people who are already sat and drinking to try to flag them down which feels awkward. It is the kind of place where you stop in casually and then realize you have been there much longer than originally intended, which I consider a very positive sign. The location is another major point in its favor. Being right across from the Georgetown waterfront makes it a perfect stop before or after a walk by the water, and that alone gives it a certain advantage in the local social circuit. We got our order taken after about a ten minute wait. Drinks also came about 15 minutes after we sat, so ten minutes just to wait and five minutes to have him make it after the order. It appeared that it was a shift change but still only one bartender for the evening. Ambiance is like Cheers the T.V. show. Literally a pub. Prices are totally reasonable! So I'd definitely come back, I think they definitely need more bartenders and/or manager presence in the front to help. Team work makes the dream work and there was none of that there.
