Hague Quality Water of Maryland - Ron and Kate receiving the BBB Torch Award

    Hague Quality Water of Maryland

    (21 reviews)

Called for an estimate on a new 50 gallon hot water heater installation in the basement…read more Appointment was easy to set for two days later. Steve Morgan, Journeyman Plumber, was on time and very professional. He looked at the current installation and patiently answered all my questions in detail. The estimate is fair and competitive in comparison to the big box chain retailers. Hague's estimate included everything, end-to-end. Labor, parts, taxes, clean up, and haul away. The all inclusive, on-site estimate and Steve's stellar customer service made Hague the winner. A few weeks later, I decided to get the new heater installed and called them. The service department was quick to respond and went above and beyond to make sure they could complete the job within a tight deadline. Their plumber left the area super clean and did a fantastic job with the new install. Even brought us a new water heater drain pan upon request. I recommend Hague and will use them again. Techs are experienced and honest. Prices are fair and work is thorough.

My experience with Hague Quality Water of Maryland started in June 2024, and a year later I…read morecompletely regret the $1,395 I spent. I never had issues with their technicians or customer service, but I was sold an Upflow Water Neutralizing System--which I later learned is not typically recommended for well water, even though many companies sell it for that function. My house (built in 1946) has a well, water softener, and pH neutralizer. When the neutralizer failed, I contacted a few companies for estimates, and Hague's price was the best. I assumed they'd know what system my house needed and didn't think twice when they recommended an Upflow unit. The salesperson emphasized that it saved water and electricity since it doesn't backwash--something that sounded good at the time but means little when you're on a well and not paying a water bill. Fast-forward to July 2025: Hague serviced the system and added calcite. Immediately afterward, my water pressure dropped to almost nothing. The technician suspected the calcite had solidified and clogged the tank, recommending it be dumped and a sediment filter added. The problem? A Downflow system backwashes automatically, breaking up buildup and clearing sediment--an Upflow system does not. After getting two second opinions, I learned I could either replace the one-year-old tank with a Downflow system (meaning the $1,395 was wasted) or plan for the tank to be dumped and refilled every year. Another company confirmed that Upflow systems are generally unsuitable for a small household on well water because of this exact issue. It turns out many companies still push Upflow systems since they're cheaper and easier to install, and most customers don't know the difference until problems appear. I wish I'd done the research first--I would have gladly paid a little more for a system that simply needed routine servicing rather than yearly repairs. Hague may be fine for maintenance, but for installations, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Shaw's - Ductwork and air handler unit touching mud

    Shaw's

    (4 reviews)

Do not recommend unless you want to pay top dollar for bottom barrel install. We moved into a home…read morewith a Shaw's 2016 heat pump install and will be spending ~5k to address the poor quality of the air handler install. The previous owners of my home were quoted 13k for this install. Code violations, did not follow manufacturer's instructions and no permits pulled. Permits have been required for changeouts in Talbot County since 2012. Shaws declined to view the install and consider making things right. Another local HVAC company saw this install and said "holy shit I wouldn't have put a sticker on this." - Our unit is only ~ 1 inch above grade and is supported by patio pavers. Both unit, ductwork and condensate pump are sinking into mud causing moisture and mildew problems. - Manager said he has never heard of codes requiring mechanical equipment to be at least 3 inches above grade. Attached is a screenshot of the 2018 international mechanical code (current building code for town of Easton, MD) regulation for clearances above grade. - Manufacturer's instructions included 4 inch condensate p trap, due to unit being installed only 1 inch above grade they installed a shallow trap (~ 1 inch) which manual says explicitly not to do. Picture attached. - No permits pulled. I believe that the unit would not have passed an inspection. - Duct work is touching dirt. - A crawlspace company that had no skin in this game noted our install is "in the bottom 10% of installs they've EVER seen in this area." - Our condensate pump was buried in mud despite unit saying "Indoor Only". Shaw's manager said that our crawlspace should be considered indoor, but at the same time also said that there was no secondary condensate system because it was not considered an indoor environment. Be prepared to get the angle that least benefits you if you use this company. - No secondary condensate drainage, secondary pan or no overflow detector which goes against manufacturers recommendations. The real kicker in this situation is that Shaw's refused to come out and view this install and to consider making the situation right. There was one other company that we had questions for after we moved in and they came out, assessed the situation and made it right. I would not recommend an expensive install with this company.
